No Time to Die director Cary Joji Fukunaga reveals why he connects to Daniel Craig's James Bond the most. Taking over from Sam Mendes who helmed the last two films, Spectre and Skyfall, Fukunaga will be the fourth director of the Craig era of James Bond. Fukunaga gained recognition in 2009 for writing and directing his first feature film, Sin Nombre, followed by his 2011 adaptation of Jane Eyre. In 2015, he made the acclaimed war drama Beasts of No Nation for Netflix.

Fukunaga's next project, the 25th James Bond film titled No Time to Die, will undoubtedly be his biggest to date. Daniel Craig stars as James Bond for a fifth and final time alongside Léa Seydoux, Ralph Fiennes, Christoph Waltz, Ben Whishaw, Naomie Harris, and Rory Kinnear, who all reprise their roles from the previous film. Rami Malek joins the cast as the primary antagonist, a terrorist leader named Lyutsifer Safin. Ana de Armas debuts as Paloma, a CIA agent who plays a key role in Bond's latest mission. Lashana Lynch stars as Nomi, an MI6 agent who is assigned the 007 number during Bond's brief retirement.

Now, in a profile by Rolling Stone, No Time to Die director Cary Joji Fukunaga discusses why he chose to veer outside the world of independent film and direct an entry into the James Bond franchise. Fukunaga says it all started with 2006's Casino Royale, calling it a "smart" reboot of the long-running series, as he connected with the more emotional aspects that Craig's Bond has become known for. Read Fukunaga's explanation below:

But Daniel’s Bond movies were, and I feel like are, the ones for my generation. What I love about these films is the emotional stuff: There are personal stakes. There are real losses. . . . When I decided I wanted to do something outside the independent-film world, Bond was the character I identified with the most. If you think about all of my films, from Sin Nombre to Beasts [of No Nation], they’re about orphans, outsiders, people who operate on their own wavelength — or are on their own, period. I get that.

Fukunaga's films have consistently focused on outsiders. Sin Nombre focuses heavily on the migrant trains of Central America and Beasts of No Nation is set during a horrific civil war in a West African country; both films following young orphans caught up in these conflicts. Craig's Bond certainly has this in common with Fukunaga's past work. The last film, Spectre, explores Bond's past as an orphan through Waltz's villain, Oberhauser, something the franchise had not done up until that point.

Fukunaga is coming into the franchise right at the end of Craig's run, who has reiterated numerous times this will be his last Bond film. However, it remains to be seen if Fukunaga will stick around for the next installment. Though he chose to lean into the more emotional aspects of Bond, Fukunaga's No Time to Die is still filled with everything audiences have come to expect: chase scenes, intense set pieces, and signature Daniel Craig moments.
