Halloween Kills director David Gordon Green is set to helm a film about the creation of Disneyland. Disneyland opened on July 17, 1955, and has been one of the most popular vacation destinations ever since it opened. The road to creating Disneyland is a fascinating one that took years of development and deals with many different companies to see Walt Disney turn a section of orange groves in Anaheim, California, into the iconic theme park known the world over.

Disney has recently started to explore the behind-the-scenes legacy of Disneyland with recent documentaries like The Imagineering Story and Behind the Attraction on Disney+. While the studio has never made an official biopic on Disney creator Walt Disney or the park's creation, the studio has cast their founder in 2013's Saving Mr. Banks, which featured Tom Hanks in the role and a scene at Disneyland. However, it appears the studio is looking to make a feature film based on their creator and their legendary park.

Per Deadline, David Gordon Green is set to direct the film about Walt Disney's creation of Disneyland with a script by Evan Spiliotopoulos (2017's Beauty and the Beast). The film will be a Disney+ exclusive, and producer Jason Reed has spent a year developing the pitch before bringing it to Disney. Green has directed a wide variety of films, from Pineapple Express to his most recent film, Halloween Kills, which is set to open in theaters and on the streaming service Peacock on October 15, 2021.

Creating a film about Disneyland fits in with Disney's attempts to expand their theme park attractions into other media. The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is the most successful of the bunch, with a planned reboot starring Margot Robbie in development. The studio recently released Muppets Haunted Mansion on Disney+ and has a new Haunted Mansion film in development. Jungle Cruise was a box-office hit and had a sequel greenlit. Scarlett Johansson is set to star and produce a movie based on The Tower of Terror. Finally, Ronald D. Moore (Outlander) is working on a series for Disney+ titled Magic Kingdom, which will tell stories based on the various rides like Thunder Mountain and the Matterhorn.

When David Gordon Green can direct the film is a significant undecided factor. The director is not only signed on to direct Halloween Ends which is due out in 2022, but he is also set to direct the sequel to The Excorcist that Jason Blum and Universal Pictures are developing. He is not only signed on for one Excorcist film but an entire trilogy, with the first of the films planned for release on October 13, 2023. Given that Halloween Ends is set for 2022, filming on the Walt Disney Disneyland project probably won't start until late 2023 at the earliest. After spending so much time in the horror genre, it will be a nice change of pace for Green to try a new type of film about Disneyland, the happiest place on Earth.
