Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker Expansion Will Be Bigger Than Many Modern RPG Releases

Square Enix's MMO Final Fantasy 14 is currently peaking in terms of popularity, reaching 26 million subscribers. It's a shocking number, given just how big of a game Final Fantasy 14 is with its base game and three massive expansion each having its own lengthy campaign. Yet all eyes are on Final Fantasy 14's upcoming expansion Endwalker, the planned "ending" for the current story arc. Square Enix is excited, too, and is promising an experience even larger than a modern RPG.

Speaking as part of a recent Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker media event, game director Naoki Yoshida had big promises for fans. To give an idea of just what he means by an expansion larger than a modern RPG, Yoshida added further context by saying that Endwalker will even be bigger than previous Final Fantasy 14 expansions. Suffice to say, Final Fantasy 14 players who have enjoyed the amount of content in previous expansions will be satisfied with what Endwalker will provide.

Elaborating on what he means by a larger expansion, Yoshida points to the amount of content to be found in Endwalker's story. He says that he doesn't want to give a specific figure for comparison, but that when looking specifically at the "amount of text," "cutscenes," and other story content there's "a lot" more in Endwalker than in, say, Shadowbringers. Given that Endwalker is the end of the story that's been told since Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn's beginning, it's clear Square Enix wants to finish the story right.

As exciting as it is to hear that Square Enix is putting the time and effort into Endwalker that the ending truly deserves, it's also unlikely to come as a surprise to Final Fantasy 14 players. One thing that Final Fantasy 14 has never failed to deliver is enough story content. Heavensward, Stormblood, and Shadowbringers are journeys that can take days if not weeks to finish, leaving players exhausted physically and emotionally. Final Fantasy players may as well be told they're getting their third extra serving of dinner.

That's a major part of why Final Fantasy 14 has had such a warm reception among its players, however. It's truly an epic fantasy story, not just similar to previous major Final Fantasy games but also bigger. That Yoshida and the team want to go bigger for the finale of their story just shows how much the team gets it. This is what Final Fantasy 14 players are asking for.

Yoshida wraps up his thoughts on the matter by reiterating that while Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker is the end of this story, it's not the end of Final Fantasy 14. Yet again, he's rather cryptic on the subject. Still, if the biggest expansion Final Fantasy 14 has ever received isn't enough, it's clear there's more to come after Endwalker arrives this November.
