Hello,

I am looking for a VPS or a Seedbox or I don't know what it's called. Newbie here. I am really not familiar with Linux specially the shell commands stuff. It's been awhile since I used a Linux computer. As far as I can remember, I only used Ubuntu and that's i t. I am willing to pay, but please, cheapest prices please. I just need the speed to be 1Gbps or less but more than 100Mbps. The bandwidth must be unlimited. Hard drive, I need some space to store files that I will be downloading, then if I am available, I will be retrieving them at home. The files, are basically some sort of old TV Series. It's just for personal entertainment. Most of the time no one shares those series anymore, and I can't afford my laptop to be turned on 24/7.

Hopefully there is also a feature where in I can download/retrieve the files via HTTP and not FTP, that would be great, as well as I will be using it to store some Documents, mainly Excel documents that I can easily send the link to my co-leagues so that they can easily retrieve the file(s).

Thank you.

---added bonus---

Is it possible to stream the downloaded files from the Seedbox via VLC?

Also, can I run a web browser in the Seedbox and access it like remotely? something like logmein, vnc,etc.. because there are some sites that in order for me to receive messages, i needed to me logged in most of the time. I don't want my computer to be turned on 24/7 for that as well.

Well depending on what you wan't prices can go as cheap as 15$/month for 1Gbps - 75gb HDD (don't ask) - no traffic limits - managed by hosting company

These are usually shared plans which means you aren't the only user with torrents on that server and probably share the IP as well

Depending on company it can be several users on the same box.

This can be good as shared servers are cheaper but can also be negative in speeds/performance if the other users download a huge amount at the same time you are downloading. Haven't noticed on my test server.

If you say you want more then here is my current config.

I have 2 seedboxes one in Canada & one closer by both VPS

(Virtual Private Servers, the main hosting server is shared by multiple VPS users but smaller amount + dedicated IP and more access)

Config of both servers:

* Ubuntu v10 with ruTorrent preconfig

* no traffic limits

* 1TB drive

* 2.5GB Ram with 3.5gb Burst

* 1gbps line

* SSH tunnel active

The main difference with the VPS & the shared seedbox plans is with VPS you get SSH by default which means you can do more with the server then just seeding.

In my case i have on one server a media service running that shares the downloaded content the moment the media services reads the folder.

This allows me to stream the content to PC,TV & Phone only minutes after download has finished.

The prices i pay are between the 30$ & 40$ a month.

I have access to simple control panel to restart server or re install OS when something is wrong.

All the rest is done with SSH access but got a fully configured ruTorrent so i was good to go from the moment i received access

Ofcourse you can go real hardcore and by pure dedicated servers.

This is a rather expensive solution.

This will give you same as VPS server but you then don't share the main resources with anyone.

Personally i like VPS more since it's virtual in case of hardware failure they can help you faster then replacing or shipping replacement components for dedicated servers.

Btw with the VPS the speeds aren't bad.

I get a steady 12mb/s up & can reach 89mb/s down.

Only thing i need to take caution off is that i can only have 4 active torrents downloading due to resource restrictions (Ram & CPU)

So yeah any idea which might fit your need for others to give you some good seedbox links?

  • Shared plans
  • VPS (server with SSH access to install stream software)
  • Dedicated (server with SSH access to install stream software)

Edit:

To respond to downloading yes you can get your files over ftp(s) in most cases.

As for the streaming think i answered that one with my example.

I use plexmediaserver for the streaming since i had the plexapp for awhile to stream to mt phone & Xbox.

As for browsing.

98% of the servers come without a desktop so it's SSH access in which you need to configure/debug .

Usually support helps you with allot of stuff but with the media service that one will be something you'll have to try on your own

That is completely awesome. After the torrent successfully downloaded, you can watch it on TV and on your phone? It's like the files are synchronized. Anyway this deal looks awesome. http://100tbh.com/SeedBox_Hosting.html

Oh yeah, I really have no idea about SSH and installing stuff through command line, so I guess, a shared and unlimited is okay with me.

Nice deals.

Fyi ssh or fulllacces/root is only given on vps / dedicated servers.

And you need that if you want to install something extra on the server like my case with media stream.

Ssh isnt that hard depending on what to install it can be a few easy commands and your stuff is configures.

Google works best in helping :)

Just to clarify i dont synch the file just stream them like the webradios.

Hello there karlo,

First of all, I see you are a new member to the forums, so welcome to IS, and good choice on getting a seedbox!

When looking for a seedbox provider, I look at 3 main aspects:

1. Setup time - This is extremely important as everybody is anxious to get their seedboxes up and running asap! Unfortunately, many companies have setup times of 1 week+ which frustrates most buyers as they realize this AFTER they purchase their seedbox.

2. Speed - when you are looking for a seedbox, don't just look at the port speed (usually in Mbps or Gbps), but also look at the hardware in the box, such as the processor or RAM included. The companies that do not tell you this information will usually have laggy seedboxes or slow connections.

3. Price - finally, everybody wants to get the best deal when you choose a seedbox which is why you compare multiple companies when looking for the best. While there are some companies that offer EXTREMELY low prices out there, just like buying anything else, you will need to take into concideration that the cheapest will not be the best. When you compare seedboxes, there is an "industry set" price when you compare like specifications. Never over, or under pay for your seedbox!

In conclusion, when looking at those three criteria you will most likely be able to choose the perfect seedbox.

If you are looking for an extremely fast, dedicated seedbox that is great for beginners, look at the link below (run by my company, yTALK Networks)
