"May" was a straight to video horror film that came out in the early 2000's that I really loved. Apparently it was supposed to be a theatrical release but got screwed over at the last minute. The director, Lucky Mckee has gone on to do a Masters of Horror episode and a bit more work, but it's a real shame that he has been relegated to TV and DVD land. May is great slasher film involving a girl piecing together the perfect person. It's fun without being totally tongue in cheek, has well written characters that sell a bit of the psychology of the freak show, and does very well at walking the line between creepy and enjoyable. It was well received when it came out, but I think people forget about this one easily because Mckee's later films (which I haven't seen, but would like to) made even less of a splash.

id recommend two movies

The Man from Earth, which is a mind blowing story of one of the most written about figures in our history

and The Quiet Earth, a thought provoking story of the risks we take in the name of progress, i once watched it three times in succession because the implications scared me so much, every single day scientists and politicians risk our very lives, on things they know nothing about, anyone who sees the final scene and isnt scared shitless is not human

Not ultra obscure, but Mulholland Drive was always one of my favs. It's a "love it or hate it" type of movie, but it definitely takes some thought, and you pick up new things every time you watch it after you "get it".
