Quoted from a mod on the site why they are making it ratio free:

Some things:

1) The ratioless system was implemented in the hopes that it would attract more users to the site. You are correct that it will probably have zero effect on how most current users utilize the site, as they probably already follow the rules and already have the obtained ratio to download whatever they want.

2) FTS is and will continue to be a private site, always. It may not exactly seem that way right now due to the reliable availability of invites, but you need to understand that the only reason users have so many invites is that FTS is trying to attract more people.

3) Working on that same principle, when the FTS staff feels as though the userbase is sufficient, invites will NOT be as easily accessible as they are now. At that point, which will likely not be for some time, FTS will bring back the more private environment it began with.

4) Donations are just that, donations. They aren't 'needed' or 'required' to keep the site up and running at all. The site/tracker/servers will never go offline due to lack of donations.
