Dyan Browne, the developer behind the upcoming sci-fi horror title Caffeine, has confirmed that support for the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) headset may well be included. The news comes as Browne launches an IndieGoGo campaign to support the project, hoping to raise $80,000 AUD before 14th May 2014. A new trailer for the title, which now runs on Epic’s Unreal Engine 4, has also been released, and can be seen below. The title casts players as a young boy that wakes up on a derelict caffeine mining station that must explore the environment to work out what has transpired.
In fact, it’s the move to Unreal Engine 4 that had made Oculus Rift support a possibility. I have not looked into this fully yet,” Browne wrote on the campaign page, “but Unreal Engine 4 is supposed to be even more friendly to VR than Unreal 3 was, so once I know what work will be involved I will let everyone know. This is a pretty high possibility since Caffeine would work so well on Oculus!”
The developer also confirmed that he would be interested in developing a PlayStation 4 version. He stressed that he would need both the funding for a developer kit and Sony Computer Entertainment’s (SCE) permission to move forward with a port, stating that he may set it as a campaign stretch goal. Could such a port offer support for SCE’s Project Morpheus VR headset?
Should funding prove successful then Browne hopes to release Caffeine in early 2015. Backers can expect a range of rewards for pledging certain amounts of money, though the first 300 can get a digital version of the title for $15 before it goes to $25. For a total of $1000 10 backers could get an invite to the title’s launch party, a one on one Skype call with Browne, a special edition of the title and more.
Caffeine has been on Steam’s Greenlight progam for a while although currently isn’t accepting votes for approval, instead simply collecting feedback and date. VRFocus will continue to follow Caffeine‘s progress and report back with all the latest.
