The upcoming Godzilla reboot still has more than its fair share of secrets to reveal, even after the fair amount of marketing material that’s been released over the past month. An upcoming prequel comic book tie-in titled Godzilla: Awakening will explore the history of the eponymous Kaiju and his fellow giant monsters going back to the mid-20th century; however, for those uninterested in a multi-platform experience, Gareth Edwards’ film should provide you with all the backstory you need. (In short: there’s a gargantuan lizard monster on the loose and it’s wreaking havoc on human cities across the globe.)

A newly-released international TV spot for Edwards’ film offers a bit more previously-unseen footage and great visuals (flaming train of death!), along with some familiar shots and images glimpsed in past trailers unveiled for the flick. All in all, Edwards’ passion for the giant monster genre seems to have inspired him to produce a top-notch Godzilla movie with modern effects and filmmaking technology – though not at the cost of the themes and ideas that allow the original 1954 Godzilla feature (a.k.a. Ishirô Honda’s Gojira) to resonate even today.

In addition to re-examining the idea that Mother Nature will always find a way to one-up humanity, Edwards’ Godzilla taps into present-day concerns about natural disasters, environmental catastrophes, and governments attempting to cover up the true cause behind them. That particular plot point is alluded to in a new viral marketing poster for the film. Apparently, if fans share the below image on Facebook and Twitter with the hashtag #DemandToKnow, they’ll eventually be able to “awaken the truth” – presumably, something in the form of a new trailer or pic.

Godzilla was chosen as our Most Anticipated Title of 2014, though of course that’s no guarantee that it’ll live up to the expectations when all is said and done. Nonetheless, Edwards’ film does appear to have all the ingredients – great cast, strong special effects, impressive set pieces, and artistic relevance – that could make for an excellent piece of entertainment during the 2014 blockbuster season.

The Godzilla reboot is based on a script credited to Max Borenstein (Seventh Son). It features a human cast that includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen (Avengers: Age of Ultron), along with Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Ken Watanabe (Inception), Juliette Binoche (Cosmopolis), David Strathairn (Lincoln), and Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine).
