I grew up with the Original NES, so graphics are not as important. Plus why waste money on a game that is terrible at game play? That just doesn't make sense to me. My favorite console is the SNES. And even though I have all 3 of the new generation consoles, I would rather play a great game on the SNES, than a terrible one on the PS3.

10% graphics and 30% gameplay and 60% stroryline to me a great storyline is very important to me, as for graphics, anything that uses pixel shader 2.0 and above with direct x 8.0 and above is fine by me . For gameplay especially FPS and rpg as long as there is weapon reloading and a gameplay that allows for a dynamic range of movement such as crouching is more than enough to satisfy me, such as the original half life series. For an RTS as long as the game has a brilliant storyline I don't really mind the graphics such as the original starcraft and red alert series. As for side scrollers and top down games a 40% graphics and 30% gameplay and 30% storyline I just could not stand the old side scroller games like megamen 3 and below, x and above is ok by me; when it comes to gameboy games but for pc side scrollers and top down games, graphics is more important than gameplay or storyline.

The most obvious thing to say is gameplay, but we should remember that saying "graphics" hopefully doesn't just mean the technology involved. I would easily argue that Super Mario World, or DOOM have better graphics that than the brown, boring, generic look Gears of War for example (A game that I think is lots of fun because of the great pacing of levels and cover mechanics, but has the most boring, cookie cutter 'buff soldier dudes in brown world' design I can think of). I would hope that "graphics" include the art direction and design for a game, and that it all comes together in support of how fun it is to play. Heavy Rain would be a great example of a game that uses it's graphics to tell the story, where gameplay takes kind of a back seat.

So, sure, I'd say gameplay, because there are probably some games with flawed or boring design and bad tech that still manage to be fun, but I can't think of a pretty game with neat art direction but god awful controls, level design, etc that would be fun to play.

As an avid PC gamer I like to have both, I play all my games on maximum graphics settings, but that doesn't mean that I find the actual gameplay less significant than graphics :) I've recently being playing Skyrim and Modern Warfare 3 for PC, both are great games in my opinion, but personally I think I enjoy the actual gameplay to Modern Warfare more, whereas Skyrim has better graphics :D

gameplay of course!

i've just read an article about overviewing games since 1990 and wow! i've grown up on games like warcraft 1-2, diablo 1-2, dooms, duke nukem 3d, red alert 2(i'm still playing with that one), carmageddon and so on - with those games i really enjoyed playing, though they had a poor graphics.

Working in games for the past 15 years, I have to say that gameplay is more important. I've played some pretty terrible games that were gorgeous to look at. An old PS2 game called "The Bouncer" comes to mind. I think the best thing that you can ever experience is when someone gets both just right. Game series like Assassin's Creed, Bioshock, Uncharted and Gear of War make me happy that gaming has finally reached the HD era.
