Professor Stephen Hawking, the renowned British physicist and author of A Brief History of Time, has died peacefully at the age of 76 at his home.

He lived under the shadow of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which progressively paralysed him over the decade and forced him to communicate through a speech-generating device. Despite his medical condition, it did not stop him from achieving personal fulfilment and professional brilliance. Against all the odds, Hawking experienced the thrills and spills of family life, with the joy of three children and the pain of two divorces. He became one of the finest scientific minds of our time, a giant of theoretical physics, who contemplated the origins and mysteries of the universe.

Stephen Hawking achieved Hollywood star-status when he was portrayed in an Oscar-winning performance by actor Eddie Redmayne in The Theory of Everything, which documented the real-life drama of his life. Redmayne was so good, Hawking said: “At times, I thought he was me.”
