Is Underboob the New Sideboob?

After years being overshadowed by the traditional V-neck cleavage and the ever-popular side-boob, the underboob has recently had a resurgence. I first took note when Teyana Taylor appeared in Kanye West's "Fade" music video sporting a too-tiny crop top, then a week later walked in the Yeezy Season 4 show with her underboob taking center stage again.

[Underboob] is less "look at me" and more "so what?"

When I met Teyana during New York Fashion Week, she told me the underboob look wasn't on purpose. "[My boobs are] just big and they can't fit in anything, so I just started to rock it," she explained. That nonchalance is part of why I'm a fan of the new underboob. It's so casual, so chill. After seeing countless plunging necklines and naked dresses, getting just a tiiiiiiny flash of underboob feels subversively sexy. It's a far cry from the Christina Aguilera's OTT take–less "look at me" and more "so what?"

Take Lady Gaga, who was spotted in September wearing variations of the cut-off tee:

Note her relaxed attitude: the sunglasses. The ponytail. The coffee cup. Lady Gaga does not care that she is a wind gust away from a nip slip. She invites risk! That's another reason why the underboob works–it shows pure confidence. It also requires you being comfortable–not only with your body, but literally (hello, no bra ).

Models like Bella Hadid, Gigi Hadid, and Kendall Jenner are fans, and their stamp of approval makes anything "in." Kendall even took a snap of herself in a cropped sweater with the caption "underboob is my thing."

The tell-tale sign underboob is really becoming A Thing? It's made its way beyond celebrities and into street style. The Blonde Salad's Chiara Ferragni was spotted at the most recent Milan Fashion Week wearing a striped shirt hemmed up-to-there. This means it's only a matter of time before fast fashion retailers start picking up on the look and underboob appears on your Insta feed from people you know.

Yes, underboob looks a bit crazy for everyday regular-people life and is certainly not appropriate for every occasion (at work, dinner with parents, a job interview...), but if you're willing to be gutsy and try something new when you're going out with friends–why not? I am here for it.
