US first lady undergoes surgery for ‘benign’ kidney condition

US FIRST Lady Melania Trump is in hospital after undergoing kidney surgery.

The Slovenia-born first lady underwent an embolisation procedure on Tuesday morning to treat what aides called a “benign” kidney condition.

“The procedure was successful, and there were no complications,” the first lady’s communications director, Stephanie Grisham, said in a statement.

She is however expected to stay in hospital for the duration of the week to recuperate.

“Mrs. Trump is at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and will likely remain there for the duration of the week. The first lady looks forward to a full recovery so she can continue her work on behalf of children everywhere.”

President Donald Trump remained in the White House during Melania Trump’s surgery. He is expected to visit the hospital shortly, Grisham said.

Less than a week ago, the 48-year-old staged a rare news conference in the White House Rose Garden to launch an initiative designed to help kids across three main areas — wellbeing, social media and opioid abuse, the latter one of the President’s key priorities.

“It concerns me that in today’s fast-paced and ever-connected world, children can be less prepared to express or manage their emotions and often times turn to forms of destructive or addictive behaviour such as bullying, drug addiction or even suicide,” she said.

“I feel strongly that as adults, we can and should ‘be best’ at educating our children about the importance of a healthy and balanced life.”
