Daley endorsed by NSWRL board to join Darren Lockyer as chief Kangaroos selector

FORMER Australia captain Laurie Daley has been appointed a chief selector for the world champion Kangaroos.

A NSWRL board meeting on Friday morning endorsed Daley’s appointment to the top job.

The NSWRL and QRL supply Australia’s selectors.

Daley will now join Queensland legend Darren Lockyer as Australia’s two chief selectors.

Daley and Lockyer will now work closely with Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga as Australia push forward to defend the World Cup in 2021.

Bob Fulton’s decision to stand down as a selector opened the position for Daley. Fulton enjoyed a remarkably successful career as an Australian coach and selector.

Meninga and Daley won three premierships when playing together with the Canberra Raiders.

Daley was controversially sacked as NSW coach after last year’s series but the NSWRL board obviously felt Daley still had enormous knowledge to offer future generations.

Daley played 21 Test matches for Australia during his glittering rugby league career. He was also named among the finest players of the 20th century.

Aside from his 21 official Test matches Daley also represented Australia in five Super League Test matches.

Daley could not be contacted on Friday night but he has told friends he is “proud, privileged and humbled” to be named Australian selector.

Daley’s first duty will be to work with Meninga and Lockyer for Australia’s Test match against New Zealand in October.

Former South Sydney and Australian forward Bob McCarthy remains a second-tier Australian selector.

McCarthy will also be expected to work closely with Daley and Lockyer.

Daley is staying heavily involved with rugby league through a new media career.

NSW won the 2014 State of Origin series with Daley as head coach.
