Storage capacity for radioactive water at Fukushima nuclear plant approaching limit

Recommended Posts

The storage of radioactive water at the Fukushima nuclear plant is almost at capacity, the Japan News reports. Although around 230,000 square meters of space has been allocated for storage tanks, there is almost no room for additional tanks – despite the fact that around 1.07 million tons of the 1.13-million-ton capacity are currently being used. The problem is due to the lack of decision by the Japanese government and the Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) on how to dispose of water consisting of tritium – a radioactive isotope of hydrogen. It comes more than seven years after a massive earthquake and tsunami triggered meltdowns of reactors at the plant in March 2011.
