Mark Hamill hasn't actually talked to James Gunn about a role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Over the last 10 years, Marvel Studios has been trying to snag some of the biggest names in Hollywood. Their comic book movie universe is filled with box office stars, Academy Award winners, and everything else imaginable. Thanks to the popularity of the universe, there's plenty of actors who want to get involved. It was just earlier this year after all that Luke Skywalker himself expressed interest in not just joining the MCU, but Hamill specifically has his eyes set on Guardians of the Galaxy.

His interest was well documented on Twitter and led to a brief conversation with director James Gunn, which resulted in a meeting being scheduled. That happened about a month ago when Gunn and Hamill finally met up, but it wasn't clear if they actually discussed a possible collaboration in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

It appears they did not based on a new interview Hamill did with Collider. He was asked about the meeting and if a potential MCU future was part of the discussion, but Hamill says it never came up. In fact, Hamill appears to have cooled a bit on the idea altogether.

"Well, actually, earlier when I had him down for a barbecue we didn't talk about the movie. We talked about living in Malibu, our relatives, pets, and it never really came up. But that's the way it should be, I don't want to strong arm him in any way. I love the movies, they're fun, but I'm happy to be in the audience. There's a lot less pressure."

Hamill may be a bit of a showman, but he's also very honest. There's nothing else to do than take him at his word that he hasn't actually spoken to Gunn about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. That doesn't mean that such a conversation won't happen down the road, though. Gunn just turned in another draft of the Guardians 3 script, so it's possible he found a role perfect for Hamill to play during the writing process. Even if that is the case, Hamill could still ultimately pass if he doesn't want the "pressure" of being in the MCU anymore.

There's still plenty of time for a final decision on Hamill's possible involvement with Guardians 3 to be made too. Production is set to begin early next year, leaving the remaining six months of 2018 for pre-production. Depending on when Marvel starts the casting process, it may not be until right before the turn of the calendar year that Hamill could be announced. Then again, it's also possible they could attempt to keep his role a secret if it isn't too big, or Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 could come and go without Hamill. With the film all but officially confirmed to hit theaters May 2020, hopefully, fans won't have to wait that long to know for sure.
