The Marvel Cinematic Universe's webslinger, Tom Holland, is mourning the loss of Spider-Man co-creator Steve Ditko, following the news of the comic book legend's passing. The Marvel Comics great was found dead at age 90 in his New York apartment on July 29, and word of his death broke on Friday. Not only was Ditko responsible for co-creating Spider-Man with Marvel writer-editor Stan Lee in 1962, the writer-artist also collaborated with Lee in the creation of Doctor Strange.

Word about Ditko passing away led to an immediate outpouring of tributes in the entertainment industry, including prominent creatives from both Marvel and DC Comics, as well as movie personnel like Guardians of the Galaxy writer-director James Gunn and Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson. Adding to the tributes Saturday was Holland, who made his debut as Spider-Man/Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War in 2016, before starring in the first Spidey solo movie in the MCU - Spider-Man: Homecoming - in the summer of 2017. Holland's latest turn as Spider-Man came in the worldwide blockbuster Avengers: Infinity War earlier this summer.

Holland paid his respects to Ditko in a tweet, noting that "We all want to leave our mark on the world - this guy crushed it." See Holland's entire message to Spider-Man's co-creator in his tweet below:

It's heartening to see Holland celebrate Ditko's achievements, especially considering that the reclusive artist has long lived in the shadow of his creative partner Lee. That's not to say Lee doesn't deserve the attention, it's just nice to witness actors like Holland note Ditko's vital contribution to Marvel Comics and ultimately, the MCU. With Holland's iteration of Spider-Man being the third to be featured on the big screen since 2002, don't be surprised if more tributes surface in the coming days from the likes of former Spidey actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, as well as their respective directors Sam Raimi and Marc Webb and Holland's Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts.

Especially poignant is that Holland noted how Ditko "made so many people so happy and changed lives," because it couldn't be more true. Thanks to his and Lee's ingenious creation, comic book readers worldwide learned how an ordinary teen could become an extraordinary superhero and as such, took their imaginations to places they had never been to before. Spider-Man is truly one of the greatest characters to ever emerge from the realm of comics. Now that Ditko is gone though, the friendly neighborhood that Spider-Man protects will never be quite the same.
