Kevin Durant, CJ McCollum feud moves to Twitter after contentious podcast exchange

THE NBA Free Agency drama is over, so leave it to the plethora of players on podcasts to ratchet it up again.

There’s never a dull moment in the league, and the latest bit of drama involves Kevin Durant and CJ McCollum, after the reigning Finals MVP appeared on the Trail Blazers guard’s podcast.

There were some contentious — though lighthearted — words exchanged, which ultimately led to this outburst from Durant on Twitter, responding to McCollum.

McCollum’s initial tweet read: “I still think the b word is harsh and shouldn’t be used. . He know that decision was soft but I respect it. It’s like getting jumped with ur brothers by a gang you should’ve beat then joining the gang that jumped u and ur brothers 2 months later & forgetting about your bros.”

Durant took issue with the statement, so he replied: “So,I would get into a gang fight, lose, plot on my brother for 2 months in our home and then go get the gang we lost to and beat him up? U think that low of me CJ? I just did your f***** podcast. Snakes in the grass boy I tell ya.”

The Golden State Warriors wing followed it up with a tweet responding to people questioning his decision to respond so forcefully to criticism (see below), as well as now-deleted tweets from Durant not liking the comparison between the NBA and ‘gangs’.

It was a surprisingly aggressive series of outbursts from Durant, considering he just sat down with McCollum on his podcast.

The ‘Pull Up’ podcast, hosted by McCollum, wasn’t all fun and games, though. One portion had an exchange between the pair, with Durant asking the host why he was so annoyed at the Warriors’ signing of All-Star centre, DeMarcus Cousins.

Durant: “Why are you mad about this stuff?”

McCollum: “Bro, I’m in the league. What do you mean why am I mad about this stuff? I’m in the Western Conference. I gotta play you MFers all the time anyway as it is, over and over again. We got eliminated by y’all a few times in the first round. So I’m looking at [Cousins].

Durant: “I mean ... you know you guys aren’t going to win a championship?”

McCollum: “Bro, we have the team. We have the capabilities. Anything is possible. We can win a championship, bro.”

Durant then began to somewhat belittle McCollum and the Blazers, in a, sort of, ‘you just keep playing basketball while we actually win championships’ vibe.

McCollum: “So, what do you suggest?”

Durant: “I suggest you just keep playing, man, and don’t worry about what goes on at the top of things. Relax.”

McCollum: “We were right there at the top of things. We were the third seed last year, bro. We were right there. We were just slightly below one and two.”

Durant: “But how’d you play?”

McCollum: “Some unfortunate situations happened in the first round.”

Durant: “How’d you play?”

McCollum: “Some unfortunate circumstances.”

Durant: “Like an eight seed.”

The exchange was all in good fun, but it’s naturally a sensitive topic, considering the NBA is these two men’s livelihood.

Durant reminding McCollum that his team got swept by a lower team was cold-blooded. Durant responding to every single bit of criticism on Twitter: not so much, even though he deserves some credit for using his own account.

For what it’s worth, this may not be over.
