Personally, I switched from using VLC and MPC-HC to Potplayer, VLC was buggy as always with the typical blockiness and stuttering, MPC-HC was very bare bones for me but for Potplayer, I liked the UI more, it has plenty of features off-the-shelf, as an avid anime watcher, I download a lot of animes and I watch them using potplayer. There is a Ukrainian website that STILL shows up high on Google search results with the malware PotPlayer. This one: https://daumpotplayer.com/download/ DON'T USE IT!
