  1. The eighth generation of consoles--that is Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Wii U--"could be the last generation of dedicated hardware." That's according to video game market research firm EEDAR chief product officer Geoffrey Zatkin, who made the claim during a panel called "Awesome Video Game Data" today at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. Zatkin didn't say what might come next if it's not another round of consoles, but he's not the first to say that the current wave of consoles might be the last. Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada said last year that the future of gaming is not dedicated hardware, but rather services. For its part, Sony said in October that the PlayStation brand will become more service-oriented going forward through cloud-powered programs like PlayStation Now. Microsoft's Xbox One also leverages the power of the cloud extensively. source:gamespot
  2. Gears of War developer Epic is probably better known in the development community for creating and licensing the Unreal game engine, but those tools have always been very expensive and limited to big studios. However, Epic announced that all that's changing for Unreal Engine 4: starting today, anyone can download and start using the complete Unreal Engine 4 for $19 a month. Epic revealed the plan's details at a GDC press conference earlier today. Tim Sweeney, the founder of Epic Games, said, "This is our complete engine, with everything Epic provides to leading game developers, priced accessibly for teams of all sizes, budgets, and aspirations." In addition to the monthly fee, developers would also pay "5% of gross revenue resulting from any commercial products built using UE4." This also includes microtransactions and any ad revenue in free-to-play games. Epic clarified that, "Unreal Engine 4 can be licensed via custom-negotiated terms, for companies that wish to form a closer support relationship with Epic, or to reduce or eliminate the 5% royalty in exchange for up-front payment." The tools are geared specifically toward development on PC, iOS, Android, and Mac. Unreal Engine 4 can also be used to develop games on Microsoft and Sony platforms, but the rights to use those tools would have to be negotiated separately. Epic is currently working to with Microsoft and Sony to make those platform development tools more accessible to indie developers as well, stating "We want to make all of [unreal] available to everyone." No new game announcements accompanied the Engine's release, and Sweeney said that Epic is not currently working on any titles in the Unreal game universe. But Epic does have several unannounced games in development in addition to the previously revealed Fortnite, and they hope to share more details soon source:gamespot
  3. More Xbox One games will run in 1080p...eventually, Microsoft Xbox director of development Boyd Multerer has said in a new interview. Speaking with TotalXbox, Multerer said he has no doubt that developers will be able to reach that resolution as they discover and improve upon development techniques. "I fully expect that to happen," Multerer said. "The [graphics processing units] are really complicated beasts this time around. The hardware is basically baked, and what comes next is people discovering better software techniques to take advantage of it, especially in the ordering of the data so it flows through all the caches correctly, and I think there's a lot of opportunity there." Speaking about the Xbox One's ESRAM specifically, he said: "this is where tuning your data set becomes super important. Multerer said some developers of Xbox One launch titles didn't have a real opportunity to focus on boosting visual performance, but this will change, he said. "Once these engines--the engine developers like Frostbite [battlefield 4] and those guys--they really wrap their heads around this particular GPU architecture, then all of the titles coming out of that studio will take advantage of it and get better," he saod. Overall, Multerer said Xbox One owners can expect "fairly large improvements in GPU output" over time. Much has been made of the fact that right now, more high-profile games run in 1080p on PlayStation 4 compared to the Xbox One. Sony responded to the 1080p/60fps debate last month, saying better performance on PS4 over Xbox One is because Sony's console is "performing and packing the punch that developers want." Meanwhile, Microsoft previously contended that "these little things get way overblown" concerning the Xbox One's library and what's truly important to players source:gamespot
  4. Just over 12 hours after Sony announced its own virtual reality initiative, Project Morpheus, Oculus VR has revealed its own Oculus Rift Dev Kit 2 (DK2). Like the Crystal Cove prototype, DK2 employs a low-persistence OLED display as a means to eliminate motion blur and judder, which are known to cause simulator sickness. The devkit also features a 960x1080p (per eye) display that aims to reduce the screen-door effect and boost clarity, color, and contrast. It also uses an external camera to allow you to move with six degrees of freedom, which should allow you to "lean in" to get a closer look at objects or peer around corners. DK2 also includes updated orientation tracking, a built-in latency tester, a USB accessory port built into the headset, a redesigned SDK, and "further optimized Unit and Unreal Engine 4 integrations." "DK2 isn’t identical to the consumer Rift, but the fundamental building blocks for great VR are there," Oculus said in a statement. "All the content developed using DK2 will work with the consumer Rift. And while the overall experience still needs to improve before it’s consumer-ready, we’re getting closer everyday. DK2 is not the Holodeck yet, but it’s a major step in the right direction." DK2 will launch at $350 and developers can preorder a kit today at the Oculus website. The first wave of units will ship in July and production will ramp up based on interest, the company said. But when will the consumer version of Oculus Rift be ready? The company said today that it is "deep into development" on the consumer version, and continues to make improvements in the areas of comfort, resolution, tracking, software, ergonomics, optics, and industrial design. "Virtual reality is going to continue to evolve rapidly in the coming years," Oculus said. "There's no cutting corners or 'good enough' when it comes to VR; the consumer Rift needs to be perfect and we're dedicated to getting it right. We're moving as fast as possible and promise it’ll be worth the wait." "We truly believe virtual reality will change the world--Thanks for being part of the journey with us." We got to try out the Oculus Rift DK2 this week at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. Check out our impressions in the video below source:gamespot
  5. Electronic Arts has secured sequel rights for Respawn Entertainment's multiplayer shooter Titanfall, a reputable source has informed GameSpot. The option to land Titanfall 2 was based on the performance of the original, our source said. Official sales data is not available, but from what we're hearing, Titanfall has performed well and even helped boost Xbox One sales. We already know that's true in the UK. An EA representative told GameSpot, "We do not comment on rumor or speculation. Right now all our focus is on supporting all the fans worldwide enjoying Titanfall." The original Titanfall is available only on Xbox and PC platforms. Terms of EA's agreement to publish Titanfall 2 are not clear, so we don't know yet if PlayStation and/or Nintendo fans will get a crack at the rumored next game in the series. EA CFO Blake Jorgensen said previously that he is "sure" that potential sequels to Titanfall could come to PlayStation and/or Nintendo platforms. Titanfall launched March 11 for Xbox One and PC. The Xbox 360 version was delayed again today to a release on April 8. For more, check out our Titanfall review. source: gamespot
  6. God of War III director Stig Asmussen has left Sony Santa Monica, though the situation surrounding his departure from the Sony-owned studio is unclear. "SCEA can confirm that Stig Asmussen is no longer with Santa Monica Studio," a Sony representative told IGN. Asmussen was a Sony Santa Monica veteran. He joined the company in 2003 and worked on God of War, God of War II, and God of War III. He did not work on God of War: Ascension, and was reportedly leading development on a new IP that Sony canceled last month as part of a round of layoffs. Asmussen is, according to IGN's sources, now interviewing at several studios, though none were named. source:gamespot
  7. The Xbox 360 version of Titanfall has suffered another two-week delay, EA has confirmed. Respawn Entertainment's shooter will now launch for Xbox 360 on April 8 in the US, with a European release following on April 11. Titanfall on Xbox 360 which was originally down to launch alongside Xbox One and PC versions last week, but was bumped back to March 28 in February. Xbox 360 owners will now have to wait another two weeks to get their hands on the game. "I want to update everyone on Titanfall for Xbox 360 in development with Bluepoint Games," said EA exec Patrick Soderlund. I’ve been playing the game a lot, and it is fantastic." "But we see a few things that can be made even better, so we’re giving Bluepoint a little more time to do just that and deliver an epic Titanfall experience for Xbox 360 players. Titanfall for Xbox 360 will now be releasing on April 8 in North America, and beginning on April 11 in Europe. The game will feature the same 6v6 gameplay, maps, modes, weapons and Burn Cards as the Xbox One and PC versions of the game." "We appreciate everyone’s patience as we get the last details right. See you on the Frontier." source:gamespot
  8. When Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 entered its final act, Dracula's son, Alucard, stepped in and completely upended our understanding of his father and their mutual archnemesis, Zobek. There are some interesting plot twists as a result, but what exactly was he up to during the events leading up to his debut? That's where the upcoming Revelations downloadable content comes in. "Alucard's role is given more clarity in the DLC, and players get a much better understanding of the motivations of the characters," according to Konami's Lords of Shadow producer, David Cox. Of course, it's hard to talk about the ending to Lords of Shadow 2 without spoiling any of the twists and turns along the way, but in vague terms, the conclusion stripped most characters of their supposed role at a pivotal moment in the story. Characters who thought they were in control of their own destinies were revealed to be ignorant pawns, and others found new life, all because of Alucard's covert activities. According to Cox, the DLC "gives players a new perspective on the events of the main game. It doesn't change the ending but offers further insight into what and how certain things happened in the game." Though he shares a few similarities with his father, Alucard feels noticeably different during combat. It's slightly jarring to start with a limited skill set after controlling a powered-up Dracula during Lords of Shadow 2, but Alucard's swords are new beasts waiting to be tamed. They fit within the dual power-up system, where one weapon saps life and the other burns through fortified foes, but his blades are uniquely balanced and feel distinct from Dracula's Void Sword. To Cox, Alucard's presence is "a chance to use a character that plays somewhat differently to Dracula. Alucard uses a sword as his main weapon, which has its own set of moves and offers players a new tree in mastery, allowing them to level the weapon up." Alucard's new skills mix up the puzzle-solving methodology that you're used to from Lords of Shadow 2, most notably when you're using the Timeless Vision skill. Certain objects in Revelations that block your path or are in disrepair can be temporarily rewound in time, a skill Dracula surely could have made great use of during his own struggles. You can also dash to high vantage points using the new Bat Cloud skill, and pass through gates like a ghost using the Spectral Wolf transformation. Puzzles that make use of two or all three skills challenge not only your ability to solve problems, but also your speed and timing under pressure. Revelations is almost entirely composed of new content, but you'll also run into familiar faces in familiar places. Thankfully, the enemies you fight as Alucard have been "customized to present a heftier challenge," according to Cox. Considering combat is one of the most enjoyable and rewarding aspects of the Lords of Shadow games, this sounds promising, but what of the stealth sections from Lords of Shadow 2 that hampered the overall experience? When I asked Cox if those will return in Revelations, he responded clearly: "No." Revelations fills in a lot of gaps present in Lords of Shadow 2's plot, but it doesn't alter the ending or mention the future of its undead cast. Does that mean there's a chance we'll see more Lords of Shadow 2 DLC down the road? Nope! Revelations is the last bit of Castlevania content from Mercury Steam, which is supposedly moving on to a different series from Konami's portfolio. As for the future of Castlevania and the Belmont clan, Cox says "it's for others to write the next chapter." Also, if you're holding out for a next-gen port of Lords of Shadow 2, keep dreaming. According to Cox, there's "no chance" of that happening. Keep an eye on GameSpot for more Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 - Revelations coverage when the game hits Xbox Live, PlayStation Network. and Steam on March 25. source:gamespot
  9. Swedish developer Mojang, creators of the world-conquering Minecraft, made a whopping revenue of 2.07 billion Swedish krona (approximately $326m/ÂŁ196m) last year, up from 816 million in 2012. Of that, 816 million krona ($128m) was profit, and 821 milion went on licensing fees into a separate company company owned by Mojang co-owner and Minecraft creator Marcus "notch" Persson, the Wall Street Journal reports. The vast majority--over 90 percent--of Mojang's money came directly from Minecraft sales, with 38 percent of its revenue from the PC version of the game, and another 30 percent from the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. The mobile versions of Minecraft also raked in roughly 25 percent of the company's overall revenue. The remaining slice of revenue came from Minecraft merchandising and its addictive card-battler Scrolls. What's next for Mojang, then? Mojang chief executive Carl Manneh said the company had a few other game projects bubbling away, but that it felt no need to rush them out the door. "Financially speaking, we have no pressure whatsoever to rush into any new projects," said Manneh. "Besides, we have no outside owners that require us to reach any particular goals." source:gamespot
  10. Developer Obsidian Entertainment has announced its partnership with publisher Paradox Interactive for upcoming PC role-playing game Pillars of Eternity. The publisher will be looking after marketing and distribution for the game, with Obsidian Entertainment retaining full control of development. Originally known as Project Eternity, Pillars of Eternity drew over $4.1 million in funding as a Kickstarter project. The game will combine elements of role-playing titles like Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment. Obsidian Entertainment CEO Feargus Urquhart confirmed the money raised via the crowdfunding campaign will be spent solely on the game’s development. He also confirmed that the game would be released in 2014, stating "we will deliver the game we promised to our backers, and we will deliver it this year." Earlier this year, it was announced that Pillars of Eternity would be delayed from its original release date to the second half of 2014. source:gamespot
  11. In Roundabout, you’re basically hydroplaning nonstop. That’s the easiest way I can think to describe this open world puzzle game where you attempt to drive a powder blue limousine that’s endlessly spinning on its axis. This means if you try to drive in any single direction you will just end up spinning donuts. It’s a ridiculous constraint, but Roundabout revels in ridiculousness. In a way, its intentionally-awkward controls lend to driving what Surgeon Simulator 2013 lends to surgery. Roundabout uses its cumbersomeness to its advantage and offers up an obstacle course based around driving in circles. When I first stepped into the driver’s seat I found it almost impossible to go anywhere except into the nearest wall. Just getting the car to move in a straight line is a nigh impossible challenge best fit for a Hollywood stunt driver and not someone who regularly wipes out in Mario Kart. It didn’t help that I was driving through a claustrophobic city played from a top-down perspective--similar to the early Grand Theft Auto games. Trees, other cars, lamp posts, and really cramped alleyways that I had no business driving down were the bane of my existence. When I say "bane of my existence" what I really mean is that my car would explode if I bumped into too many things. And I bumped into a lot of things. Thankfully, the game constantly doled out checkpoints so that I could quickly retry tricky spots. This was especially helpful when I was attempting one of the game’s missions, which all involved me picking up a friendly stranger and bumbling through some hellish urban maze on the way to his or her destination. Except for the one where cars started raining down from the sky. That one got a little weird. Speaking of weird, the game also employed full motion video cinematics. These campy cutscenes provided some context for you missions, such as the lazy soccer star who wanted me to drive him to the soccer field, and then drive a soccer ball into the goal for him. The talent for these scenes is pulled primarily from developer No Goblin’s own backyard of Seattle, Washington, including other local developers, YouTube personalities, and whoever responded to their brilliant casting call. No matter how vexed I got while driving, it was well worth it just to see the next super-cheesy, 70’s-inspired interstitial. You can unlock special powers for your limo, such as jumping or slowing down its rotation. Oh, and don't worry about the blood. If all this sounds like I’m putting down on Roundabout, know that isn’t my intention. Wrapping my head around its unusual control scheme was definitely a challenge at first, but after spending some time with the game I found there were moments when everything just clicked. By timing the rotation of my car perfectly I could glide in, out, and around every little obstacle without even a scratch--for a minute or two at least. There’s a method to this madness, provided you don’t get too dizzy along the way. Roundabout is coming to PC, Mac, Linux, and Xbox One though ID@XBOX later this year. source:gamespot
  12. Sony has released PlayStation 4 system update 1.62 into the wild. It's a 336MB patch, which will beam down the magical Internet pipes into your machine via a system update. What does update 1.62 do, then? "Operation quality during use of some PlayStation 4 format software has been improved," says Sony. Just in time for inFamous: Second Son! PS4 users are still waiting for some features, such as the suspend/resume functionality that was originally unveiled alongside the console but did not make it into the machine for launch. Many of the oft-requested PS4 features have been collated by Player Feedback. Microsoft, meanwhile, announced their next Xbox One system update in an altogether clearer and more verbose manner. Sony revealed earlier this month that global sales of the PlayStation 4 have now reached 6 million. That's six million PS4's that can now boast increased operational quality during the use of some PlayStation 4 format software, then. source: gamespot
  13. The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red is currently working on a mobile game that will launch later this year, the Polish developer said as part of its latest management report. The report was published in Polish and translated by Eurogamer. The mobile game has been in development for more than a year, CD Projekt Red cofounder Adam Kicinski said. It's being made by a standalone team (so not The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt or Cyberpunk 2077) and an official announcement is expected "very soon" with a beta test to follow. "Smartphones and tablets are truly powerful platforms these days and are finally giving us the ability to develop mobile games we would like to play ourselves; games that are taking full advantage of newest smartphone and tablet technologies, and offer the quality level that we, as a studio, are always aiming to achieve," Kicinski said. CD Projekt Red recently opened a new studio in Krakow to work on a "smaller" game estimated to span around 20 hours of gameplay. It's possible that the mobile game is this new game. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt launches February 2015 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. Cyberpunk 2077 does not have a release date yet. Source:gamespot
