  1. Electronic Arts' multiplayer shooter Battlefield 4 shipped with "dirt all over it," according to Oddworld creator Lorne Lanning, referencing the bugs that marred the game's launch last year. Lanning's comments came as part of an interview with VG247 wherein he blasted the AAA market overall. "F**k that business. I don't want to play with that business, because it was a losing business," Lanning said. He claimed that AAA game publishers can become beholden to shareholders and as a result, run the risk of building games by the book instead of branching out and trying new things. "I'd rather not make games than go f**king be a slave for public companies who care more about their shareholders than they do about their customers," he added. Lanning pointed to the release of Battlefield 4 as an example of publisher executives putting the desires of its shareholders ahead of gamers. "Why did Battlefield 4 ship? You know that team was crying. You know that team knew that game wasn't ready to go," Lanning said. "You know that team f**king spent a lot of sleepless nights building that sh** out to look as good and play as good, when it was able to be experienced, being played as they were intending it to be played." "Someone made a decision that the shareholders are more important than the customer. And we see a lot of that," he added. "How do you blow that? How do you take that f**king jewel and ship it with dirt all over it?" It's not just Battlefield 4 that "shipped with dirt all over it," but also predecessor Battlefield 3, according to lead designer David Goldfarb. Writing on Twitter, he said, "So did BF3." Goldfarb has since left EA to join Payday developer Overkill Software. We've reached out to EA/DICE for a response to Lanning's comments. Defending Battlefield 4's rocky launch, in February EA chief creative officer Richard Hilleman acknowledged that the game had some issues at release, but said that the product overall has been "exceedingly successful" from both a sales and gameplay perspective. He also brushed aside a question about Battlefield 4 not being tested before release, saying more than 10,000 people beta tested the game. source:gamespot
  2. Today marks the release of Burial at Sea - Episode 2, the final expansion for BioShock Infinite. The expansion is available to download today for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC as part of the $20 BioShock Infinite season pass or by itself for $15. You'll need a copy of the main game to play the new content. Burial at Sea - Episode 2 has players controlling BioShock Infinite character Elizabeth in the underwater city of Rapture, the main location of the original BioShock game. You can watch the DLC's launch trailer above. The first installment in the Burial at Sea expansion launched in November 2013 and scored a 5/10 from GameSpot editor Kevin VanOrd. Episode 2 will be up to six hours long, depending on your play-style, according to creative director Ken Levine. The Burial at Sea campaign for BioShock Infinite is the final project staff at Irrational Games worked on before it was announced that the studio was effectively shutting down. So what's next for the Boston-area developer? Levine and 15 others are working on a "smaller, more entrepreneurial" project for Take-Two, but that's all we know for specifics. Levine gave a talk at GDC last week called "Narrative Legos" wherein he discussed general storytelling approaches for game development. You can watch the presentation below. source:gamespot

  5. Last week, Fox sent the imaginations of genre fans running wild when their announcement of upcoming release dates featured two mystery projects: one based on a Marvel property and another being an unnamed Ridley Scott film for 2016. We're still guessing what the superhero movie might be — I'm betting on "X-Force" — but now The Wrap is claiming that the Scott film is, as many theorized, a "Prometheus" sequel and that there's a new writer on board. "Transcendence" writer Jack Paglen wrote a previous draft, but now Michael Green, one of the men behind "Green Lanter," has been hired to rewrite and make the sequel more "alien-y." It's that last detail that should have pricked the ears of "Prometheus" defenders and haters alike. The fact that Scott and Damon Lindelof moved away from Jon Spaihts' more "alien-y" original draft is what ultimately turned a lot of people off to the headier prequel that dealt more with questions about the nature of life and its unknowable origins than xenomorphs and acid spit. Prometheus When I spoke with Lindelof in 2012, he explained that the version of "Prometheus" that ended up on the big screen was crafted to be a standalone film, but the concept of a sequel was discussed. "The conversations that we had about the story of 'Prometheus' and how it would end were always predicated on the idea that there would not be a sequel, that a sequel was not a foregone conclusion, and that the movie itself had to have a feeling of being complete," Lindelof said. "That being said, we also wanted the audience to feel that, like, if there were a sequel to 'Prometheus,' it wouldn't be 'Alien.' " Above all else, Lindelof made it clear that any sequel to "Prometheus" would take Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and David (Michael Fassbender) even further away from the events of the original "Alien." The new details about the follow-up lead me to believe that those early story concepts, which would put Shaw on the trail of the Engineers, have been scrapped in favor of what "Alien" fans had been expecting in the first place. As a fan of "Prometheus," warts and all, I have to say this is a little disappointing. With each of his sci-fi movies, Scott has taken a different approach to the genre. "Alien" was a contained horror movie. "Blade Runner" was noir. "Prometheus" dealt with impossibly big questions about existence, and hopefully the sequel will dive deeper into those ideas. We've already seen Scott direct extraterrestrials that pop out of chests and eat people, and it's awesome as now as it was in 1979. But in 2016, let's see what else he has to say. The sequel to "Prometheus" is currently scheduled to hit theaters in March 2016. source:mtv
  6. The Walt Disney Company has acquired YouTube network Maker Studios for $500 million, with additional performance-based payouts of $450 million. All told, the deal could be worth $950 million. Founded in 2009, Maker Studios distributes video game-related programming like PewDiePie, TotalBiscuit, and Yogscast, among many others. Writing on Twitter, TotalBiscuit said he's going to continue making the content he wants. If he's asked to change, he'll leave. "Yup, Disney now owns Maker so also owns Polaris. No idea what this means for us, but I'll make the content I want to make or go elsewhere," he said. Maker Studios' total YouTube reach spans more than 55,000 channels, 380 million subscribers, and 5.5 billion views per month. This makes the company a "top online video network for Millennials," Disney said in statement. In acquiring Maker Studios, Disney gains "advanced technology and business intelligence" regarding consumers' discovery and interaction with short-form online videos, Disney said. CEO Bob Iger said short-form video programming is "growing at an astonishing pace" and by acquiring Maker Studios, Disney is poised to capture the market in a meaningful way. Maker Studios will remain headquartered in Culver City, Calif. The deal is expected to close later this year, pending regulatory clearance. Disney is not the first media conglomerate to invest in the short-form video space. Warner Bros. recently bankrolled game-specific network Machinima in a round worth $18 million. source:gamespot

  8. The secret of the ooze has changed, at least as far as the Michael Bay-produced "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" is concerned. Footage from the new "Ninja Turtles" movie premiered at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Monday, debuting the brand-new designs for Leonardo and the gang, and dropping some massive plot bombshells as well. The full teaser trailer is expected online later this week, but reactions to the footage have already hit the web thanks to CinemaCon attendees. Read on for details: The Story According to reports, the "Turtles" teaser features a voice-over from Shredder actor William Fichtner, revealing that the new film is an origin story of sorts. "He talks about how the city has become overrun with 'crime, violence and fear,' and how a once great city has been destroyed," writes CinemaBlend's Eric Eisenberg. "We see shots of a tower on top of a skyscraper come crashing down and hooligans wearing masks firing off guns. Shredder talks about justice being restored and the need for heroes." Apparently, there's a major change to the "Turtles" origin story as well: Shredder and April O'Neil's father are the men responsible for creating the Turtles. Exactly how that plays out remains to be seen, but it's an extreme twist on the "TMNT" mythology as we know it. The Tone There seems to be some disagreement over how humor is handled in the new "Turtles" footage. Latino Review's report states that "the action and humor had the same feel as the 1990's film," while IGN feels the footage "was far straighter and more serious than expected." "The Turtles make a few wisecracks but those quips are kind of lost amidst the action," writes IGN's Jim Vejvoda. "The Turtles are definitely presented here as the extraordinary beings who enter into April's 'real' world rather than the trailer following them with April popping up as a secondary human character." The Look The biggest question surrounding the new take on "Turtles" involves the characters' new design. Reactions from CinemaCon attendees run the gamut from extremely negative to on-the-fence. "The CG turtles don't look that bad," writes Superhero Hype's Edward Douglas, "essentially like the ones from the earlier movies, but we really only saw them very briefly and how they look in action might be what sells the movie or is a deal breaker." Collider, meanwhile, offered this much about the Turtles' design: To Be Continued It's hard to get a proper read on how the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" footage played from afar. Some attendees wrote scathing reviews of the teaser, while others adopted more of a "wait-and-see" attitude. With the teaser coming online later this week, fans can judge the footage for themselves in a matter of mere days. Our one suggestion: when you watch the teaser, make sure you have pizza handy. Everything is better with pizza, even "Turtles." source:mtv
  9. What's the only thing better than a John Green novel getting made into a big Hollywood movie? That would be two John Green novels getting made into movies, one right after the other, courtesy of the same fabulous team that's bringing "The Fault in Our Stars" to the big screen. Fresh on the heels of the news that TFiOS headliners Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort will grace the stage at the MTV Movie Awards, Deadline reports that supporting actor Nat Wolff will take a star turn in his very own film: another adaptation of a John Green book, this time the bestselling 2008 novel "Paper Towns." Written with a critical eye toward the "manic pixie dreamgirl" trope in YA fiction, "Paper Towns" tells the story of Quentin, a teenage boy from Orlando who's obsessed with mysterious, damaged girl-next-door Margo. One evening, Margo enlists Quentin for an all-night series of revenge pranks on people who'd wronged her. The next day, she disappears without a trace, leaving behind nothing but a series of cryptic clues that Quentin is determined to follow in order to find and save her. With Nat Wolff already in place as Quentin — and both the producing and screenwriting team from "The Fault in Our Stars" in charge of bringing the book to life — there's just one big question about this film yet to be answered: who will play Margo? Margo is a complicated character, one who'll need a fierce, angry lady to do her justice. And while this could be a major breakout role for an as-yet unknown actress, we've got an educated guess or two about who in Hollywood might already be on a shortlist to play her. First off:Mae Whitman. At one time, it seemed like Whitman might actually be a frontrunner for the lead in "The Fault in Our Stars." Among other things, she's a favorite of the book's author. And while she didn't end up being the face of Hazel Grace Lancaster, Mae's onscreen attitude would be well placed in the part of "Paper Towns'" enigmatic leading lady. But if she's not available — or if she'll be a bit too old by the time the movie gets made to pass for 18 — then this could be a juicy part for Liana Liberato or Kaya Scodelario, who are playing supporting roles in two of this year's other most-anticipated YA screen adaptations. source:mtv
  10. Internet tycoon Kim Dotcom, whose site MegaUpload was shut down by US authorities in 2012, has announced plans to list his new file-sharing firm on the New Zealand stock market. In January 2013, a year after the closure of MegaUpload, he set up Mega, which also allows users to host and share large files on the internet. He is currently fighting extradition to the US over charges of copyright infringement on a "massive scale". An extradition hearing is set for July. Rather than floating in its own right, Mega will take over TRS Investments - which is already listed - and change the company's name and operations. TRS will issue Mega with 700 million shares at 30 cents each, totalling NZ$210m ($180m; £109m). Mega's shareholders will own 99% of the firm. Mega's chief executive Stephen Hall said he intended Mega to be a listed company by the end of May. "The rapid global growth of Mega has generated significant interest from potential investors," he said. "Listing on the New Zealand Stock Exchange will allow investors to participate in the ongoing growth of Mega," he said. 'Basic errors' Mr Dotcom was arrested at his mansion near Auckland, New Zealand, in January 2012. As well as MegaUpload being shut down, Mr Dotcom's assets were frozen. But later scrutiny of the raid led to New Zealand Prime Minister John Key apologising to Mr Dotcom for what were described as "basic errors" by intelligence services in collecting information on behalf of the US. Opposition parties called for further independent investigations. Following the Mega stock market announcement, Mr Dotcom wrote on Twitter: "Indicted. Raided. On Bail. "All assets frozen without trial. But we don't cry ourselves to sleep. We built #Mega from 0 into a $210m company." US authorities accuse him of earning more than $175m by facilitating the distribution of pirated copies of movies, TV shows and other content.
  11. The golden age of indie games won't last, Fable and Godus creator Peter Molyneux has said in a new interview. Speaking with CVG at the Game Developers Conference, Molyneux--who now runs indie studio 22Cans--said the prosperity and proliferation of indie games is only a cycle, one that will end in due course. "What I'd say is, enjoy this time, because it won't last," he said. "Don't think we're going to be all indies for the next five years--these things go in cycles, just like in the music business. You have a time where punk is big, and then you have times like now where everything is manufactured." "Enjoy this time, because inevitably it will only last a short period," he added. Molyneux went on to say that some indie developers should be wary of venture capital firms seeking to invest in their game studios. Accepting VC funding could lead to hampered creativity, he argued. "Here's the thing: walk through any hotel lobby at GDC and look at people's name badges. This morning at breakfast I saw three angel investors talking to indies," he said. "They're saying, 'take my money! I want to invest in your company!' "But what those indie companies don't realize is that they'll then have to have board meetings, and in those meetings they'll be told, 'no, you shouldn't do that--look at this game that's making money,'" he added. Molyneux said he has nothing but love for indie developers, praising their drive and the fact that many have "no sense of fear." He said this reminds him of back in the '80s when he was starting out. "It's very much like the 80s," Molyneux said. "Back then anybody could create a game that could be hugely successful. There were no formulas or anything cast in stone." The indie scene has blossomed to a point where developers have stepped outside of traditional boundaries in an effort to create new and exciting experiences, he said. "We used to have these very defined ways to create a game, which resulted in Halo, Call of Duty, and all of that stuff, but now we've thrown all of that away," Molyneux said. "The games that we're celebrating now are stuff like Papers, Please--which is brilliant." Molyneux and 22Cans are currently working on Godus. Molyneux told GameSpot last week that he believes the fate of the God game genre itself depends on the success of Godus. source:gamespot
  12. Richard Garriott created the beloved Ultima role-playing game series. He traveled to the International Space Station and dove to the depths of the ocean to see the Titanic wreckage first-hand. He owns a stately castle-style home in Texas called Britannia Manor. Now he can add another accomplishment to his resume. Garriott's crowdfunding campaign for his "ultimate RPG" Shroud of the Avatar has now reached $3.5 million from more than 30,000 total backers. The Shroud of the Avatar Kickstarter campaign went live in March 2013 and ended in April that year with $1.9 million, well above its $1 million target. Since then, Garriott and developer Portalarium have kept donations open at the game's website, where more than $1.58 million has come through so far. "Thank you!!! We will deliver the best game we can!!!," Garriott said on Twitter about the funding accomplishment. Episode One of Shroud of the Avatar, called Forsaken Virtues, is expected to launch later this year for Windows, Mac, and Linux. source:gamespot
  13. Nintendo will not have an official presence at PAX East next month, marking the first time since the show's inception in 2010 that the Mario maker won't attend the Boston industry event. "Interacting directly with our fans and letting them play our games firsthand is a key component of our approach," a Nintendo spokesperson told Polygon. "That doesn't include PAX East this year, but we will offer our fans a variety of opportunities to get their hands on Nintendo products in 2014." Nintendo did not elaborate as to why it won't attend this year's event. The company also scaled back its E3 presence last year, trading its traditional main presentation for more intimate briefings. PlayStation developer Sony is also not attending PAX East 2014, making Microsoft the only company of the "Big Three" to attend next month's show. Other high-profile exhibitors include Ubisoft, Oculus VR, Twitch, Square Enix, Blizzard, 2K Games, and Double Fine. PAX East runs April 11-13 in Boston, Mass. GameSpot will be in attendance. source:gamespot

  15. BeyondHD torrent clients and DHT/PLEX update DHT / PEX / PRIVATE TORRENTS Hi, Over the next coming weeks the staff at beyondhd will be running some test on bit torrent clients to see what ones report the correct data to our tracker. The reason for this is i have received a number of PMs regarding stats not correct or not updating correctly. We will be black list clients making them not able to be used on beyondhd but you will be given a set period of time to update your client and any torrent files that need to be hash checked / changed etc. We will keep you well informed. A few other issue i would like to address is private torrents, if you are uploading to beyondhd it is very important that you make your torrents private, we are a private torrent site not having the torrents made private means that others can use the torrent files "Private. Only you and the people you send the torrent to know about your torrent.". a scan will begin running each once a week any torrent found not private will be deleted. Which brings me to DHT and PEX below is a easy to follow diagram explaining what DHT and PEX is and how to disable it. please read it and follow it because if you didn't know what it was more than likely you have it enabled. Thank you ^r3

  21. Need for Speed, the film based on Electronic Arts' racing franchise and starring Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul, has cruised to over $100 million in total lifetime box office grosses. In the United States, the movie has banked $30.5 million, while international receipts total over $96.1 million. Combined, Need for Speed's worldwide box office performance so far has reached $126.6 million. The data comes from Hollywood box office reporting service Box Office Mojo. Need for Speed had a $66 million production budget, so the film has now reached profitability, just two weeks after its initial debut on March 14. According to the site's Video Game Adaptation chart, Need for Speed is now the 18th best-performing movie based on a video game in United States box office history. The number one film, by a large margin, is 2001's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. I saw Need for Speed and found it to be both great and terrible. Have you seen it? Let us know what you think of the high-octane action racing movie in the comments below. source:gamespot
  22. Justin Bieber Is Done With Tattoos Biebs shared photos of a plethora of new tattoos early on Tuesday morning. A new sleeve, consisting of a cartoon boom box, a grinning face and what looks like a Mario Brothers ghost, is what's finally quenching Bieber's thirst for ink. "Done with tats 4 a while..." he wrote. Too bad. We were hoping for some more torso tats. source:mtv
  23. James Rebhorn, the character actor best known for roles in "Scent of a Woman," "Independence Day" and "Homeland," passed away last weekend from melanoma. As fans remember his work and family members mourn their loss, an unexpected party has spoken out to reflect on Rebhorn's life: Rebhorn himself. In the days before his death, Rebhorn penned his own obituary, looking back on the family, friends and colleagues that shaped his life and made him "a lucky man in every way." The obituary was published by St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jersey City, New Jersey, where Rebhorn was a longtime member. The church will be holding a funeral mass for the late actor. Read Rebhorn's own obituary in full: James Robert Rebhorn was born on Sept. 1, 1948, in Philadelphia, PA. His mother, Ardell Frances Rebhorn, nee Hoch, loved him very much and supported all his dreams. She taught him the value of good manners and courtesy, and that hospitality is no small thing. His father, James Harry Rebhorn, was no less devoted to him. From him, Jim learned that there is no excuse for poor craftsmanship. A job well done rarely takes more or less time than a job poorly done. They gave him his faith and wisely encouraged him to stay in touch with God. He is survived by his sister, Janice Barbara Galbraith, of Myrtle Beach, SC. She was his friend, his confidant, and, more often than either of them would like to admit, his bridge over troubled waters. He is also survived by his wife, Rebecca Fulton Linn, and his two daughters, Emma Rebecca Rebhorn and Hannah Linn Rebhorn. They anchored his life and gave him the freedom to live it. Without them, always at the center of his being, his life would have been little more than a vapor. Rebecca loved him with all his flaws, and in her the concept of ceaseless love could find no better example. His children made him immensely proud. Their dedication to improving our species and making the world a better place gave him hope for the future. They deal with grief differently, and they should each manage it as they see fit. He hopes, however, that they will grieve his passing only as long as necessary. They have much good work to do, and they should get busy doing it. Time is flying by. His son-in-law, Ben, also survives him. Jim loved Ben, who was as a son to Jim, especially through these last months. His aunts Jean, Dorothy and Florence, numerous cousins and their families, and many devoted friends also survive Jim. He loved them all, and he knows they loved him. Jim received his BA at Wittenberg University and his MFA at Columbia. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Nu Zeta 624, a life-long Lutheran, and a longtime member of both the AMC and ACLU. Jim was fortunate enough to earn his living doing what he loved. He was a professional actor. His unions were always there for him, and he will remain forever grateful for the benefits he gained as a result of the union struggle. Without his exceptional teachers and the representation of the best agents in the business, he wouldn't have had much of a career. He was a lucky man in every way. --Jim Rebhorn, March 2014 source:mtv

  25. The official Microsoft Store is now offering the Titanfall Xbox One bundle for $450, joining third-party retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, and Wal-Mart in selling the system for $50 off. Microsoft's deal is also good for the Forza 5 Xbox One bundle, which includes a copy of Turn 10's racing game and a system for $450. The offers will be available for a "limited time," Microsoft said. Getting an Xbox One and Titanfall for $450 means that, at least in theory, the Xbox One is more affordable than the $400 PlayStation 4 if you want to buy a new system and a new game. Sony is not currently offering any PS4 software bundles. It remains to be see what effect the release of Titanfall, a system-seller, and the $450 price promotion will have on Xbox One sales for March. Research firm the NPD Group will release its industry sales report for March early next month. source:gamespot
