  1. Tharsis is a new, interesting and rather bizarre game from the Choice Provisions studio, best known for their Bit.Trip titles.

Tharsis is atypical of anything the studio has done until now, but it’s also very different from everything everyone else has done up to this point. It’s described as a turn-based, perma-death, realistic space strategy game, but that’s because it doesn’t really fit in a specific category.

Players can control a mission to Mars that goes horribly wrong, after being struck by a meteor storm. You will have to make important decisions, many times in life-or-death situations, and you need to complete your mission. Many of these decisions are determined with dice rolls, which complicates things immensely.

“Developing Tharsis has been nothing short of a blast, but it’s also had its fair share of difficult times. As anyone making a board game - digital or otherwise - will tell you, the ‘balancing’ phase of production can be a long one indeed,” write developers on the PlayStation blog.

The game has already been in the works for a couple of years, and the studio plans to release it for the PC, PlayStation 4 and iOS. It should arrive on the PlayStation 4 platform in January 2016, so players won’t have to wait too long for this amazing-looking title with a really fascinating concept.

You can check the video below for more details about the gameplay.

  2. The development team at Ubisoft has long-term plans for Assassin's Creed Syndicate and the first big piece of major downloadable content for the open world title is set to arrive in less than one week, with gamers able to move through the streets of London to take down the notorious Jack the Ripper.

On December 15, gamers will be able to download the DLC on the PC, the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4, with Evie Frye becoming the main character as she seeks to find out who this notorious killer is, 20 years after the events of the main single-player campaign.

Ubisoft says that gamers will be able to access new skills to investigate the crimes that are taking place and to then find out the identity of the criminal who leaves behind such gruesome sights.

The Jack the Ripper DLC will be offered for 14.99 dollars or Euro, and gamers can also obtain the whole Season Pass for Assassin's Creed Syndicate for 29.99 dollars or Euro.

The game is already allowing players to make an interaction with some historical figures including Darwin and Dickens, and the addition of the killer is a good way to increase the level of immersion for gamers.

Ubisoft has not yet said why it has decided to make Jack the Ripper content exclusively playable by Evie Frye and whether it plans to use the same mono-character model for the rest of the DLC that's coming for Assassin's Creed Syndicate.

Gamers will also be able to travel to India and get access to more weapons

The Season Pass for Assassin's Creed Syndicate includes a Last Maharaja mission pack, which features Duleep Singh as he tries to gain his rightful place as the Maharaja by emerging victorious from a series of ten new missions with unique elements.

No launch date has yet been offered, but the content will probably arrive in spring of next year.

The game will also receive an extension called A Long Night, during which Jacob Frye will need to track down a member of his gang and bring him back to the hideout of the Rooks.

The Streets of London gameplay pack for Assassin's Creed Syndicate will add more than one hour of new content with extra missions, gear, outfits and weapons, and gamers can also equip their characters with steampunk and Victorian items.

Those who have paid for the Season Pass can also use a permanent experience boost that allows them to gain access to more skills.

Assassin's Creed Syndicate has been well received by both fans and critics and marks a return to form for the franchise after the major problems Unity had last year.

Ubisoft is planning to launch two new Chronicles titles, one focused on India and another on Russia, during the first two months of 2016, allowing gamers to experience unique adventures in a 2.5 D world.

A new entry in the Assassin's Creed franchise will be launched in the fall of next year, but official details about it will probably be offered in the spring of 2016.

  3. Sony has just revealed what are the games that will be provided for free this December to the subscribers to PlayStation Plus, and they are a little underwhelming.

Sony offers some free games to people paying subscriptions to PlayStation Plus every month. Some months are better than others, but it’s clear that December is not one of them. They are not bad games, but they are not outstanding either, maybe with one exception, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon.

“Attention, PlayStation Plus members! We have another set of great PS4 games for you to enjoy, just in time for the holidays. Whether you prefer a good ol’ fashioned romp through a dungeon, or maybe a light-hearted story of adventure, we’ve got you covered with two reimaginings of classic gaming goodness,” reads the official PlayStation blog.

The games that will be made available this December are Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon (PlayStation 3), Freedom Wars (PlayStation Vita), Gauntlet: Slayer Edition (PlayStation 4), King’s Quest — Chapter 1: A Knight to Remember (PlayStation 4), Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken (PlayStation Vita), and SSX (PlayStation 3).

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon seems to be the most interesting in this collection, but it’s a PlayStation 3-only title, so PS4 owners won’t be able to try it.

Don’t go running to the console, they are not there yet. They will be available starting December 2.

  4. Bethesda released the first official patch for Fallout 4 a few days ago, and users are now discovering that the developers fixed more than they announced in the official notes. Among the fixes, there's also one for the infinite caps glitch.

Fallout 4 players figured out pretty fast that there was a glitch in the game that allowed them to gather as many Caps as they wanted. Caps are the current in the game. As you can imagine, the opinion is split on this one. Some consider it cheating, others say that it's available for everyone and, therefore, not cheating. The bottom line is that it's a single-player experience, and it doesn't really matter.

The funny thing is that the patch for Fallout 4 had some release notes, but they didn't mention anything about fixing any of the multiple glitches that were present in the game. Since Fallout is an open-world game, these kinds of problems are pretty common, and many of them are actually left alone by the devs.

Community confirms the glitch being fixed

Reports have started to come in from the official forums that it's no longer possible to take advantage of the Caps glitch. Some other problems are still available, for the settlement, for teleportation, and even one that lets people use their companions to carry an infinite amount of items.

To be fair, if a user really wants more Caps, they don't have to use a glitch for that. They can very well use the console to spawn items that can be sold for huge prices or can increase the size of the inventory, thus selling more stuff in the city.

Since Bethesda has been careful to close this particular glitch, it's very likely that they will fix the rest. It would be nice if they also mentioned this in the release notes.

  5. Windows 10 users, rejoice! Microsoft has decided to give away not one, not two, but ten different music albums launched in 2015 to those who have already upgraded to the new operating system.

The music albums, which are available in the Windows Store right now and can be played in Groove Music app, include some of the popular hits of the year, and according to Microsoft, have been selected because they belong to artists that have been nominated for multiple Grammys at the upcoming 58th annual event that will take place in February in Los Angeles.

Here's the full list of albums (you can click any of them to go directly to the store and download them, but additionally, you can fire up the store and look in the Music section to find them manually):

Alabama Shakes - Sound & Color
    Alessia Cara - Know-It-All
Big Sean - Dark Sky Paradise
Breaking Benjamin - Dark Before Dawn
    Ellie Goulding - Delirium
James Bay - Chaos and the Calm
Jeezy - Church In These Streets
Logic - The Incredible True Story
    Selena Gomez - Revival
    Tame Impala - Currents

    A special “thank you”

In case you're wondering how come Microsoft is giving away music albums to Windows 10 users, the company says it's because it wants this to be a special “thank you” to all those who have already installed the new OS. And obviously, it's a way to show those who are still running Windows 7 or 8.1 what they're missing by not upgrading to Windows 10.

“We’re making 10 of the top albums from 2015 available in the Windows Store, for free for our Windows 10 fans as a gift from us for the holidays, and to say thank you for the support!” Christina Calio, member of the Groove team, said.

The giveaway runs for a limited time, so you should really hurry up to get the albums while you still can.

Update: as some of our readers pointed out, this offer is only available for those in the United States, so not everyone can download those albums. And yet, changing the region settings to the United States could be a vey simple workaround for users who really want the free music.

  6. It’s that day again when Microsoft releases a new pack of updates for Windows 10 apps in its search for improved performance and fewer bugs.

Today, Xbox, Microsoft Photos, Windows Alarms & Clock, Get Office, Movies & TV have all received updates in the store, so make sure you download and install them as soon as possible.

And now the big question: what’s new in these updates? Unfortunately, that’s really hard to tell, pretty much because Microsoft no longer provides release notes unless there’s something really worth mentioning. In other words, this new batch of updates is all about bug fixing and performance improvements, and that means the possibility of getting new features is rather low.

In the last few app updates, Microsoft actually added some minor new options here and there, but without a change log, it’s up to users to discover them.

On the other hand, it’s still a good thing that Microsoft updates these apps so often, given the fact that it needs Windows 10 adopters to use them as much as possible. Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella himself has said that it takes more time for universal apps to gain traction, so frequent updates could be part of the strategy to attract more users into running them.

As a conclusion, even though no release notes are available, you should still get these updates, so fire up the store, go to the Downloads and updates section, and get them right away.

  7. A new version of WhatsApp is now available in the store on both Windows Phone and Windows 10 Mobile, but just as it has happened with the last few releases, there is no change log available to let us know what exactly has been modified this time.

Basically, the WhatsApp update is most likely focused on fixing bugs and improving the performance of the application on both operating systems, but there’s no doubt that the developing team has had more work to do on Windows 10 Mobile.

The update, which has also showed up on our Lumia 950 XL, seems to bring a small speed improvement, as the application appears to load faster than before. This is clearly good news for Windows 10 Mobile users, especially because the operating system is still more or less affected by bugs that could have a big impact on the overall performance of the platform.

On the bright side, WhatsApp is one of the apps that are frequently updated on Windows Phone and Windows 10 Mobile, which is living proof that some developers are indeed interested in making their apps run smoothly no matter the platform.

In the meantime, everyone should download the latest version of WhatsApp for Windows Phone and Windows 10 Mobile to make sure that bug fixes and performance improvements land on your device too.

  8. Microsoft has just released an update for the Phone app integrated into Windows 10 Mobile, and although no release notes have been provided, it seems to be faster than before on Lumia phones.

With Windows 10 Mobile, the company has made the Phone feature of the operating system a dedicated app in order to be able to update it through the store, and because it wants to do this regularly, such a strategy definitely comes in handy.

But since it's a completely new app, Phone didn't work exactly as expected, and it sometimes became really slow and took unexpectedly long to launch.

And yet, this new update seems to make it much snappier on our Lumia 950 XL, which is living proof that Microsoft's hard at work these days to improve the overall performance of the built-in apps, but also of the operating system as a whole.

As usual, the new version is pushed through the store, and in case you don't see it, launch the store and go into the Downloads and Updates section to manually check for updates. Some other apps have been updated today as well, and this could be a sign that we're getting closer to the public unveiling of Windows 10 Mobile for users of Windows Phone devices expecting the upgrade currently available exclusively for insiders and new Lumia models.

  9. Microsoft announced last month that it would cut the amount of free OneDrive storage from 15 GB to just 5 GB and remove the unlimited storage account for Office 365 customers, but this decision backfired very quickly, with many threatening to jump ship to Google and Dropbox.

After one month of criticism, Microsoft now says that it has more or less changed its mind, and while the storage cuts will not be modified, users who have more than 5 GB of data in their account can keep their 15 GB quota by signing in at this link.

Making this an opt-in means that users who are not aware of the change could actually see their storage dropping to 5 GB early next year, and Microsoft doesn't seem to be willing to promote this way to keep the 15 GB of storage space.

“We’ve heard clearly from our Windows and OneDrive fans about the frustration and disappointment we have caused. We realize the announcement came across as blaming customers for using our product. For this, we are truly sorry and would like to apologize to the community,” Microsoft said in a statement on the OneDrive UserVoice page.

    No more unlimited storage

As far as unlimited storage is concerned, it won't be coming back, and Microsoft explains that Office 365 accounts will be reduced to just 1 TB of storage. But Microsoft is trying to sweeten the deal in this case too by keeping the unlimited storage option available for an extra 12 months after the changes come into effect.

“For anyone unhappy with the decision to not offer unlimited storage, we will offer a full refund,” Redmond adds.

In the end, Microsoft stresses that it feels very sorry that OneDrive users are disappointed with the change, but it still won't make any further adjustments to storage amounts.

“We are all genuinely sorry for the frustration this decision has caused and for the way it was communicated. Thank you for sticking with us.”

  10. The “Get Windows 10” app that’s being used by Microsoft to push the new operating system to computers running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 has received another makeover, this time becoming even more aggressive than before.

Basically, if you’re running an older version of Windows, and you haven’t yet disabled the Get Windows 10 app, the prompt linked to the upgrade is now recommending you to install the new OS and even gives you two different options. But unfortunately, the “no” option is not there anymore.

The screenshot that you see here has been posted by PCWorld’s Brad Cachos, who himself received this upgrade prompt and said that although he didn’t press the small arrow on the right edge of the window, finding a way to reject the Windows 10 upgrade was more challenging than before.

This notification offered just two options: upgrade now or start the download and upgrade later. But what if you don’t want to upgrade? That doesn’t seem to be an option anymore, and everyone should get used to it, given the changes planned by Microsoft in early 2016.

    Windows 10, a recommended update

Starting the first months of the next year, Microsoft will make Windows 10 a recommended update in Windows Update, so unless you specifically uncheck it in the list of items to be installed, you might end up with the new OS running on your PC.

This is part of Microsoft’s strategy to bring everyone on Windows 10, and that is why it’s clearly becoming a lot more difficult to block the upgrade to the new OS if you simply want to stick to your existing OS version.

Fortunately, there are ways to do that and get rid of the Get Windows 10 app. Thus, as soon as the upgrade is listed as a recommended download, you can simply uncheck the update and hide it completely, but there’s no doubt Microsoft will also look into alternative methods to continue pressing you to install it.

So sooner or later, Windows 10 might still land on your PC too, and it’s just a matter of time until this happens.

    microsoft-updates-get-windows-10-prompts

  11. There are many apps that can block Windows 10 from sending any information from your computer to Microsoft, but here's a clear-cut solution that can be easily used by those less experienced too.

Simply called Win10 Spy Disabler, this little app does pretty much the same thing as all the other apps developed to block telemetry services in Windows 10, but as compared to all of them, it includes easier-to-use options that do not force users to get through a complex configuration process.

For example, the app can disable spying services and scheduled tasks, telemetry and data collection, remove default Windows apps, show hidden and system files, disable Office 2016 telemetry, and block Microsoft telemetry hosts.

At the same time, it also includes some other configuration settings for the operating system, so you can disable recent files and folders history, optimize NTFS partition settings, and ask for confirmation on file deletion.

Obviously, the lack of configuration settings, such as the possibility of selecting which services to disable or apps to remove, might not be good news for more advanced users, but it's pretty clear that this is the kind of program supposed to be used by beginners exclusively.

Overall, this is definitely a good addition to your anti-Windows 10 data collection arsenal, so go download Win10 Spy Disabler to take the app for a spin.

  12. Recent downtime

Most of you know that since the recent server move we had several problems associated with the IP allocated to us by the new host. This had an impact on quite a few of our members who were unable to connect to the site. A simple change of IP was not possible and due to our configuration, a digital migration of the server software wasn't possible either. Our only option was a physical transfer to another safe location with a new IP.

We were holding off making this move until after the holiday season and had planned to announce it in good time. However, early on Thursday the server came under a sustained DDoS attack which took the site offline. After lengthy discussions with our host and their engineers, we made the decision to physically move the server.

We apologise for this disturbance and not having the opportunity to communicate but the decision was taken out of our hands.

  14. 2015’s most high-profile new music filesharing service is dead.

Aurous lasted just a few days after its launch in October before being forced offline by a lawsuit from labels. After agreeing to a $3m settlement in that case, the app is gone completely.

The case is a resounding success for music industry rightsholders, who have battled unsuccessfully for years to kill off The Pirate Bay, yet who managed to nip Aurous in the bud before many music fans even knew it existed.

It was a Spotify-like desktop application enabling people to stream music from a range of other services, with Aurous hailed as “the Popcorn Time of music” before it launched – a reference to the unlicensed streaming software that has spooked the film industry in 2015.

As soon as it launched, US industry body the RIAA filed a lawsuit and won a temporary restraining order against Aurous and its developer, Andrew Sampson. Two months later, the settlement means Aurous will not be returning.

The RIAA welcomed the settlement. “It was the right thing to do. We hope this sends a strong signal that unlicensed services cannot expect to build unlawful businesses on the backs of music creators,” said the chairman and chief executive, Cary Sherman.

Sampson had argued that Aurous was simply a way for people to find music on legal streaming services like YouTube and SoundCloud, although the labels claimed that it was relying on other unlicensed sources including Pleer and MP3Skull.

Sampson may have agreed to settle – his offer in October to resolve the dispute via an “arm-wrestling competition” fell on deaf ears – but he criticised US copyright laws in a blog post following the announcement this week.

“I implore Congress to amend the statute to reflect the realities of file sharing. There is something wrong with a law that routinely threatens teenagers and students with astronomical penalties for an activity whose implications they may not have fully understood,” he wrote.

“The injury to the copyright holder may be real, and even substantial, but, under the statute, the record companies do not even have to prove actual damage. In the US courts its not about who is right or wrong, people can judge this for themselves, its about how much money can you spend.”

  15. The Pirate Bay's original .org domain is back online after the TPB team moved it to a new registrar. Earlier this week EuroDNS suspended the domain name because the registrant failed to verify the contact details.

pirate bayA few days ago the Pirate Bay’s original .org domain name was suspended by its registrar EuroDNS due to an administrative issue.

Instead of being greeted by the iconic pirate ship logo, users saw a warning message indicating that the domain registrant had failed to verify their WHOIS details.

This verification process is a requirement of domain oversight body ICANN.

While the .org was no longer the primary domain name of The Pirate Bay many people still actively used it, so the suspension was widely noticed.

However, the troubles didn’t last long and were resolved a few hours ago. At the time of writing thepiratebay.org is fully accessible, allowing people to browse the site without being redirected.

Whether the registrant, which is listed as Pirate Bay co-founder Fredrik Neij, verified the domain details is unclear. The domain was moved to a new registrar this week, which may have been used to circumvent the verification process.

    ThePiratebay.org Whois

    tpborgwho

The .org domain was transferred to the Canada-based company EasyDNS, which has a track record for defending the rights of its customers.

For example, EasyDNS previously objected to domain suspension requests from City of London Police. The company took the matter to ICANN which ruled that registrars are not required to suspend a domain name without a valid court order.

For now it’s smooth sailing again for the notorious torrent site. Whether it’s through the .org domain, or one of several other official domains it uses.

  16. Russian telecoms watchdog Roskomnadzor says it will create a working group to look into the regulation of search engine results. The move is part of a package of initiatives designed to make pirated content harder to find. Also on the table are discussions on how to make anti-piracy techniques less prone to circumvention.

dataWhile entertainment companies and their anti-piracy allies continue to try, removing copyright-infringing content from the Internet is a huge challenge.

Media can indeed be removed from file-hosting and storage sites, but removing content from BitTorrent networks is a daunting prospect that cannot be achieved by attacking one central point. It’s a multi-pronged effort that returns mixed results, at best.

To this end content providers are focusing on making pirated content harder to find. While it may still exist, if users can’t easily locate it then download numbers will drop – they hope. As a result, one of the focus points is the role that search engines play in helping people to discover infringing content and infringing sites.

While slow, progress has been steady in the United States and Europe, with Google now downranking sites in search results based on the number of DMCA notices filed against them. Now it is the turn of Russia to ramp up the pressure on search engines via local telecoms watchdog Roskomnadzor.

This week the agency, best known for its work to have infringing sites blocked at the ISP level, announced it would create a working group to examine, among other things, the regulation of search engine results.

Just like in the US and elsewhere, rightsholders want search engines including market leader Yandex to either demote or entirely remove infringing sites from search results to make pirate content harder to find. Roskomnadzor agrees that things can be done, but note that it won’t be easy.

“I do not think that Yandex is on the side of the pirates,” said Roskomnadzor chief Alexander Zharov.

“Take a look at what will happen when the work begins on the permanent blocking of pirate sites. The position of rights holders is understandable, but this issue will not be solved today,” he said.

In comments to Russian news outlet Izvestia, Zharov said that the regulation of search results will be considered by a working group comprised of rightsholders, search engine representatives, and other online platforms.

In the meantime, however, Yandex suggests that rather than simply looking at how pirate sites could be attacked, perhaps legitimate content providers learn from their example to make legitimate products more visible.

“Maybe we should think about what could be done to promote legal consumption. The guys who tout the illegal content do an excellent job with their task. Maybe we should look on the positive side,” said Marina Yanina, Vice President of Corporate Relations at Yandex.

Perhaps unsurprisingly Yandex also mirrored sentiments previously held by Google. Since rightsholders have tools to remove content at its source, perhaps they should do so. When that is successful, content will not appear in search results.

“Copyright protection on the Internet is needed, and we encourage copyright holders to apply directly to the hosting providers [hosting the content]. If illegal content disappears from those sites, then the links disappear from search results,” Yandex said.

The working group will have other challenges too, including finding a solution to the problem of website block circumvention. According to Roskomnadzor the rise of mobile apps and other resources are enabling people to get around bans, despite aggressive action being taken by the Moscow Court.

Also, it appears that the country’s website blocking mechanism was ill-prepared to tackle so-called mirror sites – domains that spring up offering identical content to sites already blocked at the ISP level. The working group will be tasked to define in legal terms what a mirror site is, with the possibility of adding such operations to court orders when blocks are handed down.

The working group’s findings will be announced in February 2016.

  19. Well, as most of you have been expecting for a while, the time is now to declare the end of ToTV.

While development was heavy earlier in the year, summertime came around and our lot of devs got busy. That's something to be expected. What we didn't expect, of course, was for AzzA to take his leave so soon. Real life takes precedence over anything internet related, and a loss of compassion is something you can't fight with force. We tried to wait it out a bit and see if AzzA and the rest of the devs would come back around, but unfortunately it wasn't in the cards for now. Some got new jobs while others have pursued other endeavors, and I would like to take this opportunity to not only thank everyone that worked to get us where we are, but to say good luck in the future with whatever you do.

There's a chance the codebase may continue to be worked on over time, and ToTV could even pop up in the future. One thing for sure, though, is that for the time being, your community efforts should be placed elsewhere. The IRC will remain up for an undetermined amount of time, but the site will go offline in a few days, after we've given everyone a chance to see this message.

Thanks to everyone who helped alpha and beta test, your efforts won't be for naught. Even if ToTV doesn't fully come back to form, we may fix a few things and put the codebase up so others can take what they'd like from it. Either way, our ideas and vision for the future have already been adapted in other sites, so the spirit of ToTV will continue on despite this outcome.

Happy Holidays, we love you guys.
hxck, AzzA, milk, toor, mooncup, N0M4D and the rest of the ToTV team.

  20. A few days ago (2015-12-05) changed the certificates for all our services/domains on one - more secure. This does not affect the operation of any service. The problem may have only some users of Unix systems when using the tracker. Errors returned by the tracker, their description and solutions see HERE. Our current certificates are always available HERE. Thereby feel free to use secure connections using SSL, that is, humanly speaking HTTPS in the address.

  22. Wow, well that was a long and unexpected downtime. Unfortunately, as most of you already know, we were hit with a fairly nasty DDoS attack that lasted a long while. While we did try to bring the site up and managed to twice, the attack kept resuming bringing the site back down. After messing with hosts and overcoming various technical and financial obstacles, this process took much longer than we would have liked, but we're back now and ready to go!
Keep your head up, we'll be starting our Christmas celebrations in a few days and we've got lots coming your way! We weren't idle during the down time, and we're coming back even better than before .
Note that many torrents may be lacking seeders. Please resume seeding any stopped torrents and we should be all set to go shortly.
Edit: Tracker and Vertigo should also return shortly.
Best wishes, -The GGn Staff Team
