  1. The Singapore branch of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry aims to get ISPs to block infringing sites such as The Pirate Bay. SINGAPORE: The blocking of websites which promote online piracy may soon become a reality in Singapore, with at least one entertainment-related trade association planning to take action. The process to curb digital piracy has been made easier with enhancements to the Copyright Act, which were first passed in Parliament in July, and the changes came into effect in December. The Singapore branch of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) will be one of the first to test the new laws over the next two months, its regional director Ang Kwee Tiang said. “We are now actively looking into exercising this in the future,” said Mr Ang, adding that the IFPI is looking at about “three to five such infringing sites”. Taking on digital pirates could be as simple as taking a screenshot of a website like The Pirate Bay, showing how it offers downloads illegally, and then submitting it as evidence to the High Court, said Gateway Law's intellectual property lawyer Gerald Mursjid. “When you take a screenshot of The Pirate Bay and you look through the mechanism of the website itself … it's not unreasonable to say that the primary purpose of that website is to commit copyright infringement,” said Mr Mursjid. Added Mr Ang: “Now, The Pirate Bay has more than 6 million links. We take the screenshots and we show that these are not licensed. We're going to show that The Pirate Bay has been blocked in nine or 10 different countries. I think that will be very convincing for our cause." Mr Ang said his organisation is still in the midst of gathering evidence. It aims to submit between 100 and 200 screenshots of such sites as part of its application to get internet service providers (ISP) to block them. “I'm willing to give this new law a shot and see whether it will work to bring down the level of online piracy so that the industry stands a chance,” said Mr Ang. “I divide (consumers) 80 to 20 – 80 per cent are average consumers, if they cannot get it easily and if a legal site offers it, they may go for the legal site,” added Mr Ang. “The committed pirate is like a committed criminal. They will search for ways to circumvent. But once we have the website blocking, then we are free to tackle the 20 per cent.” BLOCKING SITES WILL NOT WORK: INTERNET SOCIETY OF SINGAPORE But some continue to have doubts – the Internet Society of Singapore's president Harish Pillay said efforts in blocking such sites will not work. “It's a naive consideration to think that people will be blocked,” said Mr Pillay. “This is the internet. The internet works around blockages and outages, and restrictions to access is merely a temporary blockage and we will find ways to work around it.” Efforts in curbing digital piracy should focus on finding ways to make content shareable in a way that works for everyone, Mr Pillay said. An example is digital music service Spotify, where users pay a flat monthly fee of less than S$10 for unlimited access to an enormous music library. “People are willing to pay S$10 for something but they cannot get to it because of restrictions being placed on geographical or timing restrictions,” said Mr Pillay. “When you remove that restrictions and all these archaic business models, you have a new customer base that you can now engage with.” ISPs like StarHub and M1 told 938LIVE they have not received any requests to block pirate sites so far. The onus is on copyright holders to take the first step in tackling digital piracy. And with the Copyright Act strengthened since December, it is likely that this will happen sooner, rather than later. - 938LIVE/av

  3. Canadians accustomed to illegally downloading copyrighted material without facing consequences could be in for a shock this year. The final piece of the federal Copyright Modernization Act took effect on Jan. 1, requiring Internet service providers (ISPs) and website hosts to relay letters from copyright holders to customers associated with the unique Internet Protocol (IP) address where the illegal downloading is alleged to have occurred. While such notices do not carry any immediate legal ramifications, Internet lawyer Allen Mendelsohn told CTV’s Canada AM that they do serve as “a warning” that a copyright holder has noticed illegal downloading activity at your IP address, and could decide to sue. The law does not include a stipulation that the customer must stop downloading the material or remove it from any websites to which they may have posted, but it does allow a copyright holder to sue individuals. Lawsuits could seek up to $5,000 for downloading copyrighted material for personal use, and up to $20,000 for a download that led to commercial gain. While the cost of litigation, and the relatively small return, could discourage copyright holders from suing, Mendelsohn notes it could be more worthwhile to sue a large number of people at once. The ISP or website host must also keep the notification letters for six months, should the copyright holder decide to sue. However, the ISP or website host cannot hand over your personal information unless a lawsuit is launched. In the meantime, receiving such a letter may be enough to compel the customer to stop downloading copyrighted material, he said. Customers should expect to receive a notice via email, Mendelsohn said. http://www.ctvnews.ca/sci-tech/illegal-downloaders-beware-you-may-get-a-shock-in-2015-1.2169729
  4. Downloading Torrents might seem easy to the technically inclined, but explaining the process to the average person is rather difficult. Download that program and then go to this website. Make sure you look at how many seeders and leechers there are and always download from reputable uploaders the entire process is complicated. Then theres the issue of trying to explain to someone what a Torrent actually is a file containing metadata about files and folders, a list of the network locations and also trackers. This is something a new website called Bitport wants to change: it finds, downloads and streams torrents directly to you with a high level of security, an element of downloading that is becoming increasingly important in the file sharing world, especially in Canada. Once you have created an account on Bitport, all you need to do is log into the website, drop the Torrent file or magnet link into Bitport and the download begins. It can then be streamed while downloading and a copy of the file is saved in your personal Bitport cloud storage. This file can then be moved out of the cloud and onto a physical hard drive. The main difference between downloading a Torrent through Bitport rather than on your computer via a program like uTorrent, is speed. Bitports servers are in a very fast data center. This means an ancient torrent with only a few seeders can be downloaded in only a few minutes. When it comes to popular torrents, downloads through Bitport are almost instant. Privacy is also an interesting part of Bitport because Torrents arent actually stored on your computer (unless you copy them from the cloud). All download connections are encrypted and couple this with a VPN or Tor browser, and Bitport is one of the most secure ways to download a torrent on the internet. However, its important to point out Bitports terms of use restrict downloading copyrighted files, which is likely the type of content most users will be downloading through the platform. This is something Bitport seems well aware of considering the service gives users the option to pay for their subscription through untraceable Bitcoins. Bitport offers various tiers of subscription ranging from $5 to $15 a month, all offering different amounts of storage space.
  5. The December 9, 2014 raid on The Pirate Bay resulted in the shutdown of the 11 year old Stockholm peer-to-peer domain, only giving way to an oldpiratebay.org taking off to the cloud, claiming all torrents through some ISOHunt website. The original Pirate Bay website presently shows a countdown along with a 'WeAreTPB' declaration. The countdown hints that TPB will be back on February 1, 2015. Though there is no official statement about the relaunch of the website, the countdown is enough to expect a comeback. This isn't the first time The Pirate Bay promised a comeback after a major shutdown. On May 31, 2006, the website was shut down after a raid, following copyright violation allegations, but it sprang back in action three days later, on June 2, 2006. This time it seems to be no different even after the complete shutdown on grounds of copyright infringement, on a complaint by Swedish anti-piracy group, Rights Alliance. The website has always managed to migrate its contents and channelize its activities, thanks to the cloud based servers that makes it difficult to track the original website or keep it down for long. The current website also shows a flash message thanking supporters of piracy for sharing the Old Pirate Bay website. Living up to the motto of Sweden's anti-copyright organization, Piratbyran, (yes, that Piratbyran that established TPB in September 2003), the Old Pirate Bay site declares: "We really appreciate all your efforts to help us save the Freedom of information on the internet, because that's the way Internet was created and that's the way we want it to stay…" TorrentFreak had already reported a 5 to 10 percent increase in traffic for other torrent sites, proving that piracy cannot be stopped by taking down one major piracy website, as long as the internet is present. Officials have been warning users about the phishers and scammers that could be taking opportunity of the shutdown and try extracting user information in the name of sharing torrent files. The current shutdown of The Pirate Bay is by far, the longest. Hence, the February 1 comeback is only a strong possibility and not an assurance. http://www.ecumenicalnews.com/article/the-pirate-bay-comeback-news-will-they-manage-it-yet-again-27966

  8. Gramatik is no stranger to the concept of free music distribution, or as he deems it #digitalfreedom. To start off the new year, the Slovenian producer and his Lowtemp crew have released a brand new compilation through BitTorrent entitled Lowtemporary Vol. 1. Featuring 15 tracks from Gramatik, Russ Liquid, BRANX, Exmag, Marshall McGee, The Noisy Freaks and more, the compilation is brimming with new material. Spanning everything from hip hop, to glitch hop, to funk and downtempo, it’s the perfect sampler of the Lowtemp vibe. On top of this, the bundle also features every Lowtemp single and album released in 2014. This isn’t the first time Gramatik has partnered with the site; last year he released his entire back catalogue for free in a massive BitTorrent Bundle. Download the Lowtemporary Vol. 1 bundle here.
  9. Torrents have grown up and are now making money for artists. File sharing company BitTorrent has announced in a blog post Thom Yorke’s Tommorrow’s Modern Boxes was downloaded over 4.4 million times since its September release. The album was released as a $6 BitTorrent Bundle, a digital package of content sold by an artist who retains 90 percent of the profits. Tommorrow’s Modern Boxes’ 4.4+ million downloads account for more than $26.4 million. With a 90 percent share of the profits, Yorke’s take should be an impressive $23.76 million off the bundle that included eight songs and one music video. By comparison, the Frozen soundtrack has sold 3.46 million copies since January and is considered the highest selling album of 2014. The final sales total for the album may never be known due to how Bundles operate. BitTorrent Bundles, such as Thom Yorke’s Tommorrow’s Modern Boxes offer free downloads for some of the same content they have on sale. The artist chooses if the public gets to know how many downloads translated into money. Thom Yorke decided to not release sales data for his album, according to Straith Schreder, director of content strategy for BitTorrent speaking with TechCrunch back in November. The number of downloads Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes accumulated is also up for debate. Billboard Senior Analyst Glenn Peoples tweeted out the same 4.4 million download figures back in October. While sales data remains shrouded in mystery, it’s clear BitTorrent has a distribution model that can produce paying customers. Research firm Ipsos MediaCT revealed BitTorrent users were 170 percent more likely to purchase a digital music download than the average Internet user. They’re also not against putting their money where their clicks are as the average BitTorrent user spending $48 a year on music. With digital download revenue expected to cross $4 billion globally for the first time ever this year, the road to future riches for the music industry may be paved in torrents.
  10. A police raid took down The Pirate Bay last month, and the popular download service has remained dead ever since. However, the group behind the torrent site has taken back its domain name in the meantime while publishing a static page that features a secret code, a pirate flag and a timer that’s been counting to a potential relaunch that might take place on February 1st. Further supporting the belief that The Pirate Bay is coming back up soon are the findings of a Reddit user, who has deciphered that secret code. According to dafky2000, the code posted on the website is actually an encrypted link to a YouTube video that shows a well-known scene from Terminator 2 in which Arnold Schwarzenegger’s catchphrase “I’ll be back” is featured. While that’s certainly disappointing to some people, who might have hoped that other special secrets lie behind that string of characters — especially considering that a recent hint from The Pirate Bay suggested users might be able to build something using that secret — the decryption of the message coupled with the countdown timer seems to strongly suggest the service is coming back up real soon. “I was trying to solve the ‘pipe vi Makefile’ mystery so I could build whatever program the Makefile would make,” dafky2000 told Torrent Freak. “Decryption seemed like the stepping stone to that goal. I was mildly disappointed I couldn’t build something but I think there might be more to that.”
  11. Plenty of online services, some more legal than others, offer users instant access to movie downloads and streaming. But one company has come up with a new concept for watching movies at home that doesn’t involve buying, renting or stealing movies. The service is cheaper than Netflix — it’s actually free for the time being — and legal, as opposed to illegal downloads from The Pirate Bay or other similar torrent services. Dubbed Wavelength, the new service lets people stream virtually any movie they desire, though there are some caveats. In order to get access to movies, users who sign up for the service should either convince their friends to register as well, or make connections inside Wavelength. What actually happens inside the service is that users can watch a friend’s collection of purchased movies, as long as those movies are also stored in the UltraViolet cloud locker system. UltraViolet lets users who purchased a movie stream it online to multiple devices, and Wavelength takes advantage of that particular feature. That means up to three users can simultaneously watch an UltraViolet title shared by one of their common friends on Wavelength. The movies aren’t stored on Wavelength servers, as they’re accessed directly from the original seller, but the company also offers customers the option of purchasing movies if they so desire. Even though the new service is legal, and doesn’t offer access to any pirated content, Hollywood studios might not be entirely thrilled about it. To some extent, and this might be a challenge for Wavelength going forward, this movie library sharing feature might convince some users not to purchase as many movies as they used to. Wavelength is briefly explained in the video below, with more details about it available at the source links.

CG was founded in 2007. I used to call CG as illiterate and evil brother of KaraGarga (KG). Apart of movies CG also has obscure porn, OSTs, ebooks, documentaries etc. CG only holds flop, critically (not)acclaimed movies. Their database is so rich that some movies aren't available in IMBD or on Google Search. Apart of English movies you can find foreign films as well. This is perfect place to explore abandoned world of abandoned movies. 14. The Pirate Bay was raided and taken offline over a month ago by Swedish officials. In that time, IsoHunt resurrected the site with backup data, as well as launched Open Bay to create hundreds of mirrors. The original Pirate Bay, however, remains inactive. Officials believe that it may be some time before the case is closed against the torrent site. Torrent Freak reported that Fredrik Ingblad, the prosecutor on the case against The Pirate Bay, believed the process would take many months to complete. It appears that they have a ton of evidence to comb through before they can proceed. The raid in December allowed the officials to seize a number of computers and servers, all related to the case. Each of these items will have to be combed through, one by one, for evidence against The Pirate Bay. A process which will take time to complete. A Wild Ship Appears! On The Pirate Bay Website Indicating More Movement Towards A Return As for the current movements on the site that signal a return, they authorities are watching. But since there's nothing there yet, there is nothing that they can do. However, it seems that if the Pirate Bay were to make a return, it may be considered to be the same entity as the former. Various signs point to the Pirate Bay returning even though there hasn't been any word from the operators in either direction. Similarly, aside from the admission that there is a lot of evidence to sort, the prosecution has remained quiet about the proceedings against the infamous torrent site. Currently, although The Pirate Bay has had some updates, it remains for the most part, totally inactive.

  16. The Pirate Bay looks to have confirmed that it will return, after a Reddit user cracked a mysterious code on its website. The Pirate Bay was taken offline in a police raid last month, but those behind it quickly said that it was likely to return. Now that looks confirmed after a Reddit user decoded mysterious messages posted on the site. A long string of code on the site was decoded by user dafky2000,he told TorrentFreak. “I love a challenge and that hit the spot,” he said. That pointed to a YouTube compilation of Arnold Schwarzenegger saying “I’ll be back” from the Terminator films. But mysteries still remain. There is another hint on the site called ‘pipe vi Makefile’. dafky2000 had actually been looking to understand that mystery — which could be used to make software — when he came across the Terminator message. He hopes that he or somebody else will be able to decode that puzzle, which could be more useful than the Schwarzenegger one.

BitMe is one of the most hard-to-get in trackers and even more hardest to survive in. They are (in)famous to disable the whole invite tree of even 50+ members with the mistake of only one guy. Earning an invite is difficult as only staff can give invites and that's it. Very hard to get and very difficult to maintain. And, at the end I strongly think it is overrated tracker.
