  1. The Universal action franchise has been tearing up asphalt for almost 20 years now on the big screen and now it will be driving to the small screen in an upcoming animated Fast & Furious series on Netflix. The show will be the first part of an expansion of the multi-year deal that Netflix has with DreamWorks Animation Television for original animated kids and family programs, with the expansion allowing the streaming service and studio to explore Universal’s film library for properties to adapt following the Comcast-NBCUniversal acquisition of DreamWorks. The current deal has been ongoing for five years, with 14 series having already been released, including DreamWorks Trollhunters created by Guillermo del Toro, DreamWorks Spirit Riding Free and All Hail King Julien, with the studio having garnered 17 Emmy awards and 21 Daytime Emmy nominations. The animated series will follow Tony Toretto, Dom (Vin Diesel)’s teenage cousin, as he and his friends are recruited by the government to infiltrate an elite racing league that is a front for a crime organization bent on world domination. Film producers Diesel, Neil Moritz and Chris Morgan are attached to the series as executive producers, while Tim Hedrick (DreamWorks Voltron Legendary Defender) and Bret Haaland (Julien) will serve as both executive producers and showrunners. “We are thrilled to take our fantastic partnership with DreamWorks Animation to the next level with new opportunities from the vast library of Universal Pictures,” said Melissa Cobb, Vice President of Kids and Family. “The Fast & Furious franchise is a global phenomenon beloved by audiences of all ages, and we can’t wait to get started on the new animated series that will capture the action, heart, humor and global appeal of the feature films.” “We are excited to extend and expand our successful relationship with Netflix by not only delivering more high-quality DreamWorks programming, but connecting fans of Universal films with fascinating new stories,” said Margie Cohn, President of DreamWorks Animation Television. “Our new home at Universal marks an exciting new chapter for storytelling at our studio, and Fast & Furious is only the beginning.” While the series is currently in development, fans of the franchise can look forward to the next installment, Hobbs & Shaw, following Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham’s characters working together, which is set to hit theaters July 26, 2019.
  2. Blackfilm.com has learned that Paula Patton (Traffik, Somewhere Between) has been cast in Stephenie Meyer’s (The Twilight Saga, Down A Dark Hall, Austenland) supernatural spy thriller series The Rook at Starz. The project is executive produced by Meyer with Stephen Garrett (The Night Manager) serving as showrunning Executive Producer. The Rook is a riveting supernatural thriller about a young woman pursued by shadowy paranormal adversaries while grappling with extraordinary abilities of her own. The woman wakes up in a London park suffering from total amnesia — surrounded by dead bodies, all wearing latex gloves. She must fight to uncover her past and resume her position at the head of Britain’s most secret (supernatural) service before the traitors who stole her memory can finish what they started. “I’m going to London to shoot a pilot for Starz called The Rook. I’m playing a villain and I’m excited about that,” Patton said about her role in the project. The Rook is adapted and co-produced by award-winning playwrights and screenwriters Sam Holcroft (Rules for Living) and Al Muriel (Precious & Rich), based on the novel by Daniel O’Malley. The series will air on the Starz platform in the U.S. beginning next year, while Liberty Global will also feature the series exclusively on demand across its footprint in Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Lionsgate will distribute the series worldwide.

  5. Variety is reporting that Amazon has picked up US rights to Zero Zero Zero, the new eight-part TV series from the creators of the 2014 hit Gomorrah. Andrea Riseborough (Waco), Dane DeHaan (Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets), Gabriel Byrne (Hereditary) and Harold Torres (Sin Nombre) have all signed on to star in the series from Italy-based production company Cattleya. The series has already begun production. Zero Zero Zero centers around the power struggle over the cocaine trade by following a shipment of coke from the Americas to Europe. Mexican cartels, the Calabrian mafia and corrupt businessmen all battle each other for power over the drugs. Adapted from Roberto Saviano’s book, Zero Zero Zero will be directed by Stefano Sollima (Gomorrah), Pablo Trapero (The Clan) and Janus Metz (True Detective). “We are going to do it by following a container ship and its load from its point of departure in Mexico to its final destination in Calabria, describing how the international trafficking of this special ‘commodity’ is affecting the market, the world economy and even our lives,” Sollima said. “This special good is cocaine, and its journey is our own.
  6. Amazon, Netflix and major studios sue Set TV alleging ‘mass infringement’ of content Oft-rivals Amazon and Netflix are teaming up with major movie and TV studios to go after streaming service Set TV, alleging in a lawsuit that the company is disguising piracy and “inducing mass infringement” of copyrighted material within an interface that looks just like any other online content provider. The suit was filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Central California, and the all-star list of plaintiffs includes Amazon, Netflix, Disney, 20th Century Fox, Sony Pictures, Columbia Pictures, Universal and Warner Bros. The defendant, Set TV aka setvnow, bills itself as a means to cut the cord from cable with more than 500 live channels and access to a big library of on-demand programming for $20 a month. The lawsuit also mentioned an $89 set-top box, but a link to it on Set TV’s website is broken. It’s rare to see what amounts to an entire industry coming together to sue a single company. But the proliferation of third-party streaming networks and associated set-top boxes promising access to nearly endless content is making it harder to tell what is legitimate and what is piracy. In this case, the streaming services and studios allege that Set TV connects customers to unauthorized streams of live and on-demand content and disguises them as legitimate. “For the customers who use Setvnow, the service provides hallmarks of using authorized streaming services — a user-friendly interface and reliable access to popular content — but with a notable exception: the customers only pay money to Defendants, not to Plaintiffs and other content creators upon whose copyrighted works Defendants’ business depends.” We’ve reached out to Set TV and will update this post if we hear back. The studios came together last year under the banner of the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment in part to stop online piracy. In October, they filed what was called a “first-of-its-kind” copyright lawsuit against streaming media player maker TickBox TV, making similar allegations to the Set TV lawsuit filed today. In February, a judge issued an injunction against TickBox, ordering it to stop facilitating access to pirated material, something the company had already started doing. Here’s how Set TV gets its content, according to the lawsuit: When a user selects any of the menu links above, Setvnow begins streaming the selected content from third-party sources. These sources capture live transmissions of the above-listed television channels, convert the copies of the television programs into streaming-friendly formats, and then retransmit the entirety of the live broadcasts over the Internet
For its on-demand options, Setvnow relies on third-party sources that illicitly reproduce copyrighted works and then provide streams of popular content such as movies still exclusively in theaters and television shows. The studios are asking for an injunction to stop the allegedly pirated material from streaming. The group also argues it is entitled to “$150,000 per work infringed by virtue of Defendants’ willful, knowing, and material contribution to infringement.” Read the full lawsuit below: Sorry i click 2x Close thread please

  19. Pirate Site-Blocking? Music Biz Wants App Blocking Too With thousands of websites blocked all around the world on copyright grounds, pirates are continuing to innovate. The rise of apps designed to provide free content represents a fairly recent development but one the entertainment industries are keen to stem. The CEO of Warner Music Russia now says his company has infringing apps firmly on the anti-piracy agenda. In some way, shape or form, Internet piracy has always been carried out through some kind of application. Whether that’s a peer-to-peer client utilizing BitTorrent or eD2K, or a Usenet or FTP tool taking things back to their roots, software has always played a crucial role. Of course, the nature of the Internet beast means that software usage is unavoidable but in recent years piracy has swung more towards the regular web browser, meaning that sites and services offering pirated content are largely easy to locate, identify and block, if authorities so choose. As revealed this week by the MPA, thousands of platforms around the world are now targeted for blocking, with 1,800 sites and 5,300 domains blocked in Europe alone. However, as the Kodi phenomenon has shown, web-based content doesn’t always have to be accessed via a standard web browser. Clever but potentially illegal addons and third-party apps are able to scrape web-based resources and present links to content on a wide range of devices, from mobile phones and tablets to set-top boxes. While it’s still possible to block the resources upon which these addons rely, the scattered nature of the content makes the process much more difficult. One can’t simply block a whole platform because a few movies are illegally hosted there and even Google has found itself hosting thousands of infringing titles, a situation that’s ruthlessly exploited by addon and app developers alike. Needless to say, the situation hasn’t gone unnoticed. The Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment has spent the last year (1,2,3) targeting many people involved in the addon and app scene, hoping they’ll take their tools and run, rather than further develop a rapidly involving piracy ecosystem. Over in Russia, a country that will happily block hundreds or millions of IP addresses if it suits them, the topic of infringing apps was raised this week. It happened during the International Strategic Forum on Intellectual Property, a gathering of 500 experts from more than 30 countries. There were strong calls for yet more tools and measures to deal with films and music being made available via ‘pirate’ apps. The forum heard that in response to widespread website blocking, people behind pirate sites have begun creating applications for mobile devices to achieve the same ends – the provision of illegal content. This, key players in the music industry say, means that the law needs to be further tightened to tackle the rising threat. “Consumption of content is now going into the mobile sector and due to this we plan to prevent mass migration of ‘pirates’ to the mobile sector,” said Leonid Agronov, general director of the National Federation of the Music Industry. The same concerns were echoed by Alexander Blinov, CEO of Warner Music Russia. According to TASS, the powerful industry player said that while recent revenues had been positively affected by site-blocking, it’s now time to start taking more action against apps. “I agree with all speakers that we can not stop at what has been achieved so far. The music industry has a fight against illegal content in mobile applications on the agenda,” Blinov said. And if Blinov is to be believed, music in Russia is doing particularly well at the moment. Attributing successes to efforts by parliament, the Ministry of Communications, and copyright holders, Blinov said the local music market has doubled in the past two years. “We are now in the top three fastest growing markets in the world, behind only China and South Korea,” Blinov said. While some apps can work in the same manner as a basic web interface, others rely on more complex mechanisms, ‘scraping’ content from diverse sources that can be easily and readily changed if mitigation measures kick in. It will be very interesting to see how Russia deals with this threat and whether it will opt for highly technical solutions or the nuclear options demonstrated recently. Source: Torrentfreak.com
