  1. There was once a time when, Robbie Williams freely admits, he wandered about the planet, going from one existential crisis to the next. "You know - the archetypal bullshit pop-star stuff," Williams says. "Why is it like that, the stadium and all the people and the records and the houses and the cars, and why am I so sad?" But fatherhood quickly put paid to all that. The former Take That singer's children, five-year-old Teddy and three-year-old Charlie, have helped him approach pop superstardom in the same way as others approach their own jobs - just another way to feed his family. And that mission will take the Briton all the way south to New Zealand and Australia over the next three weeks as part of his latest global tour. "The kids come and it's like, okay, it's about them - Daddy goes to work, Daddy's got a great job and let's not worry about it too much," Williams says. "Let's just go and provide for them. "So yeah - everything has changed." The 44-year-old Williams will hold 11 concerts across the Antipodes in the coming weeks, just months after cancelling Russian tour dates due to various health issues, including a mystery illness and severe back pain. In part due to his health woes and in part due to his wish to stay healthy for Teddy and Charlie, he has since converted to a vegan lifestyle. He also does yoga and pilates each day. The Stoke-on-Trent native says he's now back to his concert-nailing best, and was looking forward to finishing off his tour on a high. He'd play tracks from the entirety of his 28-year career. "It's just time I look after myself a bit better - I love my job, I want to be able to do it for a long time," Williams says. "I have something in me that wants to f*** everything up and obliterate myself, it's inside me and (something) I'm working through on a day-to-day basis. "I can either feed that wolf or not feed that wolf, and I'm choosing not to feed that wolf right now and look after myself because I like life." Williams will hold his first concert in Auckland on Wednesday, followed by Dunedin on Saturday and then nine across Australia.

  4. PROLIFIC author and former pop musician Michael White has died in Perth aged 58. White’s first claim to fame was as a member of 1980s British pop band, Thompson Twins, best known for their 1983 hit, Hold Me Now. He went on to become a science lecturer, a bestselling author of 43 books and a screenwriter for the upcoming film, The Gateway. The biography on his website says he is the only person to appear in three Top 10 charts - as a musician, a novelist and a non-fiction writer. White has lived in Perth with his wife, Lisa, and their four children for many years. He has held writing courses in Perth under the moniker, The Book Guru. Mrs White delivered the sad news on Facebook, confirming her husband died on Tuesday last week. “I can't really put into words the grief and shock the children and I are feeling right now,” Mrs White said. “Twenty five years of being married to a writer has not resulted in any of his talents being passed on to me and I have deleted and rewritten this post countless time in order to do justice to my beloved husband and my children's beloved father.” Popular Cottesloe identity, the Cottesloe Barbie, worked alongside Mr White to run the local writing courses. She posted a heartfelt tribute to him on Facebook on Sunday. “Michael was an exceptionally talented and versatile individual but he also exemplified an even rarer gift: humility,” Cottesloe Barbie said to her 16,000 followers. “Michael was passionate about everything he did but the greatest passion of his life was his family. “He leaves a wife whom he loved and adored and four children of whom he was rightly proud. “Known as 'The Book Guru', Michael was just and fair, extremely funny and wonderful company. “He taught both at UWA and most recently, with me. He was a wonderful friend and it was a privilege to know him.”
  5. Subs Heroes is a just-released Italian documentary which tells the story of underground fan-made subtitling in a country which is "still paying the consequences of language barriers created by fascism." However, local anti-piracy groups and even the country's cinema industry are angry that the movie paints the volunteer translators on unauthorized subtitling sites as digital heroes. With many thousands of movies and TV shows being made available illegally online every year, a significant number will be enjoyed by speakers of languages other than that presented in the original production. When Hollywood blockbusters appear online, small armies of individuals around the world spring into action, translating the dialog into Chinese and Czech, Dutch and Danish, French and Farsi, Russian and Romanian, plus a dozen languages in between. TV shows, particularly those produced in the US, get the same immediate treatment. For many years, subtitling (‘fansubbing’) communities have provided an incredible service to citizens around the globe, from those seeking to experience new culture and languages to the hard of hearing and profoundly deaf. Now, following in the footsteps of movies like TPB:AFK and Kim Dotcom: Caught in the Web, a new movie has premiered in Italy which celebrates this extraordinary movement. Subs Heroes from writer and director Franco Dipietro hit cinemas at the end of January. It documents the contribution fansubbing has made to Italian culture in a country that under fascism in 1934 banned the use of foreign languages in films, books, newspapers and everyday speech. The movie centers on the large subtitle site ItalianSubs.net. Founded by a group of teenagers in 2006, it is now run by a team of men and women who maintain their identities as regular citizens during the day but transform into “superheroes of fansubbing” at night. Needless to say, not everyone is pleased with this depiction of the people behind the now-infamous 500,000 member site. For many years, fansubbing attracted very little heat but over time anti-piracy groups have been turning up the pressure, accusing subtitling teams of fueling piracy. This notion is shared by local anti-piracy outfit FAPAV (Federation for the Protection of Audiovisual and Multimedia Content), which has accused Dipietro’s movie of glamorizing criminal activity. In a statement following the release of Subs Heroes, FAPAV made its position crystal clear: sites like ItalianSubs do not contribute to the development of the audiovisual market in Italy. “It is necessary to clarify: when a protected work is subtitled and there is no right to do so, a crime is committed,” the anti-piracy group says. FAPAV General Secretary Federico Bagnoli Rossi says that the impact that fansubbers have on the market is significant, causing damage not only to companies distributing the content but also to those who invest in official translations. The fact that fansubbers often translate content that is not yet available in the region only compounds matters, Rossi says, noting that unofficial translations can also have “direct consequences” on those who have language dubbing as an occupation. “The audiovisual market today needs to be supported and the protection and fight against illicit behaviors are as fundamental as investments and creative ideas,” Rossi notes. “Everyone must do their part, respecting the rules and with a competitive and global cultural vision. There are no ‘superheroes’ or noble goals behind piracy, but only great damage to the audiovisual sector and all its workers.” Also piling on the criticism is the chief of the National Cinema Exhibitors’ Association, who wrote to all of the companies involved to remind them that unauthorized subtitling is a crime. According to local reports, there seems to be an underlying tone that people should avoid becoming associated with the movie. This did not please director Franco Dipietro who is defending his right to document the fansubbing movement, whether the industry likes it or not. “We invite those who perhaps think differently to deepen the discussion and maybe organize an event to talk about it together. The film is made to confront and talk about a phenomenon that, whether we like it or not, exists and we can not pretend that it is not there,” Dipietro concludes. “[Italiansubs] translates and makes available subtitles of audiovisual works (films and television series) in many cases not yet distributed on the Italian market. All this without having requested the consent of the rights holders. Ergo the Italiansubs community is illegal.”
  6. After hiring the services of a private investigations firm, Epic Games discovered they'd sued another minor for alleged cheating. The gaming company asked the court to keep the personal information of the kid under seal. A private investigator was also used to locate another minor defendant in a separate case, who is now risking a default judgment. Last fall, Epic Games released Fortnite’s free-to-play “Battle Royale” game mode for the PC and other platforms, generating massive interest among gamers. This also included thousands of cheaters, many of whom were subsequently banned. Epic Games then went a step further by taking several cheaters to court for copyright infringement. In the months that have passed several cases have been settled with undisclosed terms, but it appears that not all defendants are easy to track down. In at least two cases, Epic had to retain the services of private investigators to locate their targets. In a case filed in North Carolina, the games company was unable to serve the defendant (now identified as B.B) so they called in the help of Klatt Investigations, with success. “[A]fter having previously engaged two other process servers that were unable to locate and successfully serve B.B., Epic engaged Klatt Investigations, a Canadian firm that provides various services related to the private service of process in civil matters. “In this case, we engaged Klatt Investigations to locate and effect service of process by personal service on Defendant,” Epic informs the court. As Epic Games didn’t know the age of the defendant beforehand they chose to approach the person as a minor, which turned out to be a wise choice. The alleged cheater indeed appears to be a minor, so both the Defendant and Defendant’s mother were served. Based on this new information, Epic Games asked the court to redact any court documents that reveal personal information of the defendant, which includes his or her full name. This is not the first time Epic Games has used a private investigator to locate a defendant. It hired S&H Investigative Services in another widely reported case, where the defendant also turned out to be a minor. In that case, the mother of the alleged cheater wrote a letter to the court in her son’s defense, but after that, things went quiet. This lack of response prompted Epic Games to ask the court to enter a default in this case, which means that the defendant risks a default judgment for copyright infringement. — Epic’s declaration for the motion to seal the personal details of minor B.B. is available here (pdf). The request to enter a default in the separate C.R case can be found (here pdf). Source: Torrentfreak.com
  7. Google and one of Australia's leading movie companies are on a collision course over piracy. Village Roadshow's outspoken co-chief Graham Burke has twice this month accused Google of facilitating crime and is now inviting the company to sue him. Meanwhile, Google is fighting for new safe harbor protections that Village Roadshow insists should be denied. Wherever Google has a presence, rightsholders are around to accuse the search giant of not doing enough to deal with piracy. Over the past several years, the company has been attacked by both the music and movie industries but despite overtures from Google, criticism still floods in. In Australia, things are definitely heating up. Village Roadshow, one of the nation’s foremost movie companies, has been an extremely vocal Google critic since 2015 but now its co-chief, the outspoken Graham Burke, seems to want to take things to the next level. As part of yet another broadside against Google, Burke has for the second time in a month accused Google of playing a large part in online digital crime. “My view is they are complicit and they are facilitating crime,” Burke said, adding that if Google wants to sue him over his comments, they’re very welcome to do so. It’s highly unlikely that Google will take the bait. Burke’s attempt at pushing the issue further into the spotlight will have been spotted a mile off but in any event, legal battles with Google aren’t really something that Burke wants to get involved in. Australia is currently in the midst of a consultation process for the Copyright Amendment (Service Providers) Bill 2017 which would extend the country’s safe harbor provisions to a broader range of service providers including educational institutions, libraries, archives, key cultural institutions and organizations assisting people with disabilities. For its part, Village Roadshow is extremely concerned that these provisions may be extended to other providers – specifically Google – who might then use expanded safe harbor to deflect more liability in respect of piracy. “Village Roadshow….urges that there be no further amendments to safe harbor and in particular there is no advantage to Australia in extending safe harbor to Google,” Burke wrote in his company’s recent submission to the government. “It is very unlikely given their size and power that as content owners we would ever sue them but if we don’t have that right then we stand naked. Most importantly if Google do the right thing by Australia on the question of piracy then there will be no issues. However, they are very far from this position and demonstrably are facilitating crime.” Accusations of crime facilitation are nothing new for Google, with rightsholders in the US and Europe having accused the company of the same a number of times over the years. In response, Google always insists that it abides by relevant laws and actually goes much further in tackling piracy than legislation currently requires. On the safe harbor front, Google begins by saying that not expanding provisions to service providers will have a seriously detrimental effect on business development in the region. “[Excluding] online service providers falls far short of a balanced, pro-innovation environment for Australia. Further, it takes Australia out of step with other digital economies by creating regulatory uncertainty for [venture capital] investment and startup/entrepreneurial success,” Google’s submission reads. “[T]he Draft Bill’s narrow safe harbor scheme places Australian-based startups and online service providers — including individual bloggers, websites, small startups, video-hosting services, enterprise cloud companies, auction sites, online marketplaces, hosting providers for real-estate listings, photo hosting services, search engines, review sites, and online platforms —in a disadvantaged position compared with global startups in countries that have strong safe harbor frameworks, such as the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Singapore, South Korea, Japan, and other EU countries. “Under the new scheme, Australian-based startups and service providers, unlike their international counterparts, will not receive clear and consistent legal protection when they respond to complaints from rightsholders about alleged instances of online infringement by third-party users on their services,” Google notes. Interestingly, Google then delivers what appears to be a loosely veiled threat. One of the key anti-piracy strategies touted by the mainstream entertainment companies is collaboration between rightsholders and service providers, including the latter providing voluntary tools to police infringement online. Google says that if service providers are given a raw deal on safe harbor, the extent of future cooperation may be at risk. “If Australian-based service providers are carved out of the new safe harbor regime post-reform, they will operate from a lower incentive to build and test new voluntary tools to combat online piracy, potentially reducing their contributions to innovation in best practices in both Australia and international markets,” the company warns. But while Village Roadshow argue against safe harbors and warn that piracy could kill the movie industry, it is quietly optimistic that the tide is turning. In a presentation to investors last week, the company said that reducing piracy would have “only an upside” for its business but also added that new research indicates that “piracy growth [is] getting arrested.” As a result, the company says that it will build on the notion that “74% of people see piracy as ‘wrong/theft’” and will call on Australians to do the right thing. In the meantime, the pressure on Google will continue but lawsuits – in either direction – won’t provide an answer. Village Roadshow’s submission can be found here, Google’s here (pdf). 8. FilmSharks sells the adventure film, Maneglia-Schembori's follow-up to Paraguayan action thriller hit '7 Cajas' HBO Latino has picked up U.S. rights to Juan Carlos Maneglia and Tana Schembori’s adventure thriller “Los Buscadores” (“The Gold Seekers”), Paraguay’s foreign-language Oscar entry and a local box office hit. Deals in France, China, Japan, Australia, Italy and German-speaking territories are under discussion, said FilmSharks’ Guido Rud. In a previously announced agreement, Sony Pictures TV acquired all Latin American rights. Selling more than 160,000 admissions since it opened in Paraguay last year — a standout figure — “Gold Seekers” marks Maneglia and Schembori’s follow-up to 2012 box office, sales and festival breakout hit, action thriller “7 Cajas,” a Breaking Glass Pictures pickup for the U.S. “Gold Seekers” “has became an international sales sensation after it received an upbeat reaction and amazing reviews off its world premiere at the Palm Springs Festival,” according to Rud. Produced by Maneglia-Schembori Producciones, “Gold Seeker” is set in the neighborhood of Chacarita, right next to downtown Asunción, where Manu, a young paperboy, accidentally discovers an old map and photos in an ancient book given him by his grandfather. He teams with other paperboys in a hunt for buried treasure.
  9. Those in the market for a new game that won't cost them a penny are in luck, provided they have an Amazon Prime membership. The next free PC game to be offered through Twitch Prime--which is one of the perks of an Amazon Prime membership--is now available, and it's a good one. Civilization IV: The Complete Edition can currently be had for free on Twitch. It's available from now until February 21 and can be claimed from Civ IV's game page or by clicking the Prime Loot button from the Twitch website's top bar while logged into a Twitch Prime account. Bear in mind, you'll need to redeem this through the Twitch desktop app, rather than simply getting a code to redeem through Steam, but it's yours to keep even after this offer expires. Although the Civ series is now two numbered entries ahead, Civ IV remains an excellent game that you can easily lose hundreds of hours in. The Complete Edition, which normally retails for $30, packages the base game with its Beyond the Sword, Colonization, and Warlords expansion packs, introducing even more content to a game that already offered a tremendous amount of gameplay. Free games and DLC packs are periodically given out to members with Twitch Prime. Another is on the way shortly after this Civ IV offer concludes, as the original Devil May Cry will be free beginning on February 27. That precedes the PS4, Xbox One, and PC release of Devil May Cry HD Collection on March 13. PC owners can also nab another free game through EA's On the House promotion, which is currently giving away Dead Space.

  13. System Shock Reboot development has been put on hold while the team reassess how best to continue the project. Speaking in an update on the System Shock Reboot Kickstarter page, Nightdive Studios CEO Stephen Kick said as the game’s concept grew, the scope and budget followed. “As the budget grew, we began a long series of conversations with potential publishing partners,” said Kick. “The more that we worked on the game, the more that we wanted to do, and the further we got from the original concepts that made System Shock so great. “Ultimately the responsibility for the decisions rests with me. As the CEO and founder of Nightdive Studios, a company that was built on the restoration of the System Shock franchise. “I let things get out of control. I can tell you that I did it for all the right reasons, that I was totally committed to making a great game, but it has become clear to me that we took the wrong path, that we turned our backs on the very people who made this possible, our Kickstarter backers.” Back in June 2016, Nightdive Studios took its System Shock Remaster to Kickstarter. At this time, the game was no longer considered a remaster by the studio, but a reboot instead. The studio enlisted the help of Fallout: New Vegas team members such as Chris Avellone, Jessica Johnson, Kevin Manning, and Dan Rubalcaba to work on the title. Jason Fader, the project director on System Shock, also worked on New Vegas. The studio asked for $900,000 in funding, and by the end of the campaign, $1,350,700 had been raised by 21,625 backers. The team went from creating a remaster to a completely new game, and shifted development from Unity to Unreal Engine for System Shock Reboot. In his post today, Kick said this was a decision the team doesn’t regret, but along with the engine switch everyone began “envisioning doing more,” yet strayed from “the core concepts of the original title.” “I have put the team on a hiatus while we reassess our path so that we can return to our vision,” said Kick. “We are taking a break, but not ending the project. “Please accept my personal assurance that we will be back and stronger than ever. System Shock is going to be completed and all of our promises fulfilled.” Nightdive was responsible for the Enhanced Edition of the original title. The System Shock Reboot was originally slated for release on PC and Xbox One at the end of 2017 and PS4 in early 2018.
  14. 2018 has been an exciting year for the Warez scene so far. First, Italian group CPY circumvented Ubisoft's deadly triple protection (Uplay, Denuvo, and VMProtect) that was present in Assassin's Creed Origins. And now, the word on the street is that CODEX has successfully cracked Microsoft's Universal Windows Platform (UWP) protection found in Zoo Tycoon Ultimate Animal Collection. Unlike Denuvo's unimpressive track record for protecting games for a few months, UWP actually did a stellar job in keeping multiple Microsoft games safe for over a year. So, what's Microsoft's secret winning formula? Stick as many layers of DRM into the game as humanly possible. According to CODEX's NFO file, Zoo Tycoon Ultimate Animal Collection had as many as five different DRMs (MSStore, UWP, EAppX, XBLive, and Arxan) which made the game a pain in the neck to crack. At this moment, it's unknown whether other Microsoft titles like Forza Motorsport 7 or Gears of War 4 possess the same number of protection layers. But now that CODEX has initiated the domino effect, we'll find out soon enough.
  15. If you don't already have enough to play or are simply looking to mix things up, you've got some options right now on Xbox One. Three different games are hosting free-play weekends, two of which don't require Xbox Live Gold. The first two are NBA 2K18 and Rainbow Six Siege. 2K18 is the latest game in the basketball sim series, and while its Virtual Currency microtransactions are objectionable to some, the on-court action is quite good. Siege, meanwhile, is the continually evolving competitive shooter from Ubisoft. It's undergone a remarkable transformation since its launch in 2015, and it continues to go strong, with a big update coming up soon. Both of those games are playable even if you don't have an Xbox Live Gold membership, which is often a requirement to take part in these free-play events. You will, however, need an active Gold subscription to check out the third game, Blizzard's hero shooter, Overwatch. As with previous free trials, you'll be able to play the majority of the game, including all heroes and maps in Quick Play, Custom Games, and Arcade. As it happens, the game's Lunar New Year event is ongoing, giving you a chance to unlock some cool new Year of the Dog skins. Progress made during any of these trial periods will carry over to the full versions if you ever decide to purchase them. NBA 2K18 and Siege's free events run from now through February 18, and both games are on sale on the Xbox Store this week; the Overwatch free event runs through February 19.
  16. A classic franchise returned this week, powered by a brand new engine and supporting both the current-gen consoles and their mid-generation refresh equivalents. There are key enhancements here - a seamless open world with no loading, dynamic time of day and weather rendering plus a new system for dealing with animation and in-game physics. However, what's immediately clear from booting up the game is that Dynasty Warriors 9 has issues. Despite the inclusion of performance and image quality orientated modes (on all systems bar base Xbox One), frame-rate is sub-par, no matter which system you own or which mode you use. At best it's sub-optimal, at worst it's a mess. What's also curious is that the implementation of the 'action' and 'movie' modes varies across platforms. So, let's kick off with what we thought would be the most optimal way to play the game - action mode on PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. In both cases, frame-rate is unlocked and v-sync is disabled, meaning that the uneven action is accompanied by ever-present screen-tearing. Busy scenes drop to the low-20s here - not exactly the kind of performance level we'd expect from the enhanced consoles. Pro runs at 1080p resolution, but Xbox One X trumps it with a native 1440p framebuffer - albeit with some cutbacks to the visual feature set and an overall lower level of performance. Movie mode on both systems often drops performance to the 20fps level - sometimes dipping beneath - but the actual implementation varies here. Xbox One X appears to just turn v-sync on, effectively giving users a Hobson's choice of continual tearing or obvious judder. As the arrival of each new frame in movie mode is tied to the display refresh, frame-rate also drops noticeably. Aside from that, we could see no real difference between the two modes. The situation with movie mode is very different on PS4 Pro, however. It uses geometry rendering techniques to target native 4K. This technique uses 1080p render targets and shading, but the actual geometry itself should be native 4K - Gravity Rush 2 is an excellent example of this working well. Pro's efforts on Dynasty Warriors 9 result in an image quality upgrade - it is cleaner overall - but the geometry itself presents in a similar manner overall to nearest neighbour upscaling. It doesn't seem quite right, but the overall improvement still doesn't justify the hit to performance. Xbox One X's drops to draw distance and foliage detail (and seemingly reduced texture filtering too) are curious, but perhaps explained by the fact that in development, X titles are scaled up versions of the base Xbox code, as opposed to enhanced versions of PlayStation software. Regardless, it's not great, and PlayStation's advantage here extends into the feel of the game itself. Xbox One X also exhibits more stutter, even with v-sync turned off, leading to more uneven response. Performance is disappointing on all systems here, but PS4 Pro does have the edge - just steer clear of the movie mode. All of which begs the question: what happens to the base consoles? PS4 Pro's best-case scenario delivers only 1080p resolution, and does so with uneven, often very low frame-rates. Surprisingly, the performance profile remains much the same on the standard PlayStation 4, with just few instances of breaking the 30fps barrier. The developer's chosen path here is to strategically shave the Pro experience, downsizing it for the standard PS4. First of all, that means a resolution downgrade, bringing action mode down to 900p - a 30 per cent drop in pixel count. The visuals themselves are also pared back, with environment detail that's reduced compared to both PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. Update the PS4 version with the latest patch and users of standard hardware also get the option to run the game in either action or movie modes. The latter upgrades the pixel count to 1080p and turns v-sync on, but retains the same pared back settings. The boost to image quality comes at a cost though: frame-rate is once again consigned to 20fps territory and below in Dynasty Warriors 9's packed combat scenes, with gameplay veering into unplayable territory At the bottom end of the scale, things really don't look good for users of the standard Xbox One. The actual functionality of the action and movie modes on the other platforms is questionable, but at least it's there - there's no choice at all with the base Xbox game locked to what we assume is the action mode. The downgrades certainly come thick and fast though: PS4's 900p drops back to 720p on Xbox One, while foliage is more aggressively culled compared to all of the other systems. On top of that, shadow resolution takes a big hit, texture filtering is very noticeable pared back, depth of field is cut from some scenes and ambient occlusion appears to be absent or dialled back considerably. It's a poor state of affairs all-round, and remarkably, even with all of these reductions in place, Xbox One still has a measureable performance deficit against the PlayStation 4 release, while retaining the off-putting screen-tear. In conclusion, it's a disappointing turn-out for Dynasty Warriors 9 on all of the systems tested. Looking back to the franchise entries on PlayStation 2, the game targeted 60 frames per second. Yes, there was slow-down but it was fairly solid overall and the fluidity was a key part of the spectacle. Over time and across the generations, the focus has shifted more towards fidelity, with performance less of a priority. With this new release, action mode frame-rates range between 20-40fps, but the busiest scenes are when you need consistent performance most, and the results here are just not good enough for solid response and satisfying gameplay. It's interesting to note the developer's choices for the enhanced consoles. Yes, resolution is increased, but there's also a conscious effort to make the game prettier than the standard set by the base PS4 - the end result is the same depressed frame-rates, as opposed to the smoother performance we would have hoped for. Just a concerted push for a solid 30fps would have made Dynasty Warriors 9 a lot more enjoyable but as things stand, this is a disappointing to abject showing on PS4 and Xbox One, and the results on the enhanced consoles are indeed the lowest consistent levels of performance we've seen from these systems.
  17. In March of 2016, Nightdive Studios released our video of our vision of System Shock Remastered. Done in Unity it was an immediate hit with almost a half million views on YouTube. In June of 2016 we launched a Kickstarter campaign to make the vision into a reality. It was tremendously successful with over 21,000 backers contributing over $1.3 million to the campaign. We put together a development team and began working on the game. But along the way something happened. Maybe we were too successful. Maybe we lost our focus. The vision began to change. We moved from a Remaster to a completely new game. We shifted engines from Unity to Unreal, a choice that we don’t regret and one that has worked out for us. With the switch we began envisioning doing more, but straying from the core concepts of the original title. As our concept grew and as our team changed, so did the scope of what we were doing and with that the budget for the game. As the budget grew, we began a long series of conversations with potential publishing partners. The more that we worked on the game, the more that we wanted to do, and the further we got from the original concepts that made System Shock so great. Ultimately the responsibility for the decisions rests with me. As the CEO and founder of Nightdive Studios, a company that was built on the restoration of the System Shock franchise, I let things get out of control. I can tell you that I did it for all the right reasons, that I was totally committed to making a great game, but it has become clear to me that we took the wrong path, that we turned our backs on the very people who made this possible, our Kickstarter backers. I have put the team on a hiatus while we reassess our path so that we can return to our vision. We are taking a break, but NOT ending the project. Please accept my personal assurance that we will be back and stronger than ever. System Shock is going to be completed and all of our promises fulfilled. Stephen Kick
  18. 2018 has been an exciting year for the Warez scene so far.
  19. It appears Xbox One X and the Xbox One S users can look forward to 1440p support at some point in the near future. Kevin Gammill, program manager for Microsoft’s Xbox Platform Partner Group, said on Twitter earlier this week members of the Xbox Insider Program will soon see 1440p support added. According to Gammill (via Windows Central), folks part of the early preview ring should be “pleasantly surprised very soon.” Xbox Insiders test upcoming hardware and software additions to Xbox One consoles. Once testing is complete, an update is rolled out to the public. At present, Xbox One X makes use of supersampling on a 1080p television or monitor; however, due to downsampling on 1080p, those with a 1440p display have lower resolution. Xbox One S will also see support for 1440p displays, but only Xbox One X supports gaming in 1440p, according to Neowin. The update for Xbox Insiders is expected next week, if a tweet from Xbox Insider Program head Brad Rossetti is any indication.
  20. Is buffering getting in the way of your binging? Kids blaming laggy Internet for losing online games? Wish your iPad could connect while curling up with an ebook in bed? Good news: You have a few options to improve the speed, range, and overall performance of your wireless network. The following tips and tricks should also help if you have multiple Wi-Fi devices on your network at the same time — such as a computer, printer, smartphone, tablet, Smart TV, video game console, multi-room sound system, and smart home gadgets. It starts with your ISP You could have the fastest router in the world, but it won’t be useful if you aren’t getting fast speeds from your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Budget permitting, ensure you’re getting the fastest speeds offered by your ISP – especially if you like to stream video, play online games, and have multiple simultaneous devices on the network. Usually, the more you pay, the faster the download and upload speeds, and the more data you’re allowed to use per month (unlimited is the way to go if your ISP offers it). If it’s been a few years since you’ve upgraded the modem you rent or bought from your ISP, confirm with them it’s the best they got Location, location, location The next step is to ensure your router, which gives you your wireless Internet, is in an optimal spot in your home. Keep it on the main or top floor and close to the center of the house for optimum reach. Refrain from keeping your router in the basement, if you have one, as it’ll be tough for devices elsewhere in the home to communicate with it. On a related note, don’t shove the router in a corner of a home, or locked away in a cabinet, because you don’t like the way it looks. Instead, keep it out in the open for maximum reach in and around your home. Make sure it’s off the floor and on a desk or bookshelf. Also, keep your wireless router up to date with the latest downloadable firmware. Newer routers, consider MESH According to a recent IDC survey, nearly half the people surveyed use routers that are at least 12 years old. Yikes. If it’s been a few years since you’ve upgraded your router, consider picking up a new one – with 802.11ac speeds instead of the older 802.11n — as it’s not only faster but covers a wider area and supports more simultaneous devices. For maximum impact, your devices, such as a laptop, should also support the newer speeds. Often a number is associated with the router, such as an AC3200 router, which is faster than an AC1900 router, for example (the higher the number, the better). Those in a larger home (or older home, with, say, concrete walls) might consider a MESH network, which is a more advance router, and includes multiple “bases” or “hubs” – wireless extenders, if you will — to place around the home. These devices all wirelessly communicate back with the router to blanket a broader space, and with faster and more reliable Wi-Fi. Channel changer Today’s Wi-Fi routers broadcast in two different frequencies: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Figuring out the best one for your situation can improve your network’s reach, speed, and reliability. Devices on the 5 GHz frequency minimizes interference among devices also operating on the 2.4Hz frequency in the home, such as microwaves, baby monitors, and cordless phones. While the 2.4GHz frequency is able to reach farther distances than the 5GHz frequency, devices connected to the 5Hz frequency operate at faster speeds. When joining your devices to your router (required once), you can choose which frequency you prefer. Security, privacy Especially now that routers have a broader range than ever before, it’s critical to have a password on your home’s Wi-Fi connection. You don’t need a degree in computer engineering to add a good password. If unsure, contact your ISP for help. Neighbors who secretly use your wireless network get a free ride, which can also slow down your Internet performance. What’s more, you might be liable if nearby web surfers download illegal content, such as pirated movies, from your Internet connection. A password also minimizes the chances of someone hacking into your computer and access your personal Info.
  21. If you were upset about the recent removal of the “View Image” button on Google’s image search engine, you’ll be happy to know a workaround has recently popped up. Specifically, a new Chrome Extension can be installed to generate the same old button that allows you to find an image and view it directly. Getty Images, a large database company for high-quality photos, is the main reason the button was removed. Back in 2016, the company sued Google for allowing its search engine users for accessing images and downloading high-res versions without ever visiting the original source. Google and Getty Images reached an agreement that would let the tech giant continue to produce results from the smaller company’s database, but with some restrictions, including one where the “View Image” button was removed. In theory, this will force users to navigate to the original source to view an image, and possibly be required to access it via a subscription or purchase. The goal is supposed to protect copyrighted material from being pirated. https://twitter.com/searchliaison/st...26180776845312 What the “View Image” Chrome extension does is offer the same photos in their respective resolution simply with a click. It’s unclear if this extension violates any of Google’s policies or agreements with Getty Images, so if you use the Chrome browser (or Firefox), go grab the extension from below while you can. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/d...bdeclccemkghjk https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...on/view-image/
