  1. Unlike previous entries in the Fallout franchise, this November's Fallout 76 is a multiplayer-focused, always-online game. Bethesda plans to release free DLC to keep people coming back as part of the game's larger games-as-a-service model. But how long will the game last? According to Bethesda marketing executive Pete Hines, until the end of time. "Forever," he told Metro when asked how long he envisions Fallout 76 lasting. "I'm not being ironic. Like, forever." Part of the reason Hines said he believes this is possible is because other Bethesda games like Fallout 4 and Skyrim have remained incredibly popular years after launch, and those titles didn't have as much of an online focus as Fallout 76. "Other people have said, 'Is your timeline [for Fallout 76] two years or five years?' And I said, 'Well, they're still playing Morrowind and you go online and look at how many people are playing Fallout 4 and Skyrim," Hines said. "Those games have been out for four and seven years, and there are literally hundreds of thousands of people playing those games every single day, every single month." He added: "So Fallout 76, our timeline is in perpetuity." While Hines said he believes Fallout 76 will have an incredibly long tail, he said he doesn't know for sure what the future content will look like. How future content shapes up will depend on how the community reacts. "Part of our thing is we need to get people in the game and see how they respond," he said. "We've even taken this approach for past DLC. I don't know if you remember Fallout 3? The big consumer reaction when we launched that game was that they were all upset that it had an ending. And we were like, 'All the previous games had an ending! We thought we were sticking to what that franchise is…' But they didn't want an ending and we had a couple of DLCs in the works but the third one we did we were like, 'Well, we need a DLC that removes the ending of the game and allows you to continue on.' So 76 is going to be like that. We have some ideas for this and that, but let's see what people want more of. Let's see what they respond to and support that." Fallout 76 launches in November for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC; the beta begins in October, and it'll be available first on Xbox One. Alongside the Power Armor edition, Microsoft will bundle the game with a white Xbox One X.
  2. Breaking with tradition, this year's Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 does not feature a traditional campaign. But why? Treyarch design director David Vonderhaar and studio head Dan Bunting answer that question in a new video from Game Informer. "Development is a journey," co studio head Dan Bunting said. "We try a lot of different ideas and a lot of different things. The game that we are making has evolved over time, and that's just a part of development. I can't remember a single game that we've made that hasn't had a dramatic change in the prototyping stage. That's what prototyping is for. You prototype ideas; some of them work out great, some of them don't work out great and you pivot. You find a new idea [and] focus on that. We follow the fun." Vonderhaar pointed out that Black Ops 4's battle royale mode, Blackout, also changed a lot during the development process. "It's normal," Vonderhaar said about how video games can change substantially and significantly in the development process. Bunting added that Treyarch had a huge ambition for Black Ops 4 when development started. He stressed that the studio was always planning to have Black Ops 4--across all modes--being an entirely social experience. Vonderhaar went on to say that Black Ops 4 never had a campaign in the traditional sense. "It wasn't a campaign as people usually refer to it anyways," he said. "How can you say what happened to this thing that wasn't. It was a multiplayer game." The interviewer went on to point out that it's interesting that the prototyping process led to a traditional campaign falling by the wayside the same year the team greenlit a battle royale mode for the game. Fans might wonder if the campaign was scaled back so the team could allocate its resources to a battle royale mode, a notion that--true or not, or somewhere in between--might rub some the wrong way. Bunting didn't answer the question directly, but said adapting is critical to Treyarch's success. "Everything tends to work together for a reason," Bunting said. "Internally, we have built a culture of adaptation. The most important aspect of game development is being able to adapt. If you can't look at something that you're doing honestly and say, 'This thing isn't good enough,' or, 'This isn't what we want,' and 'We need to make a change.' If you can't do that yourself, then you're not adapting. You're not going to evolve in a way that's going to constantly deliver exciting experiences for your fans." While Black Ops 4 doesn't have a traditional campaign, the game will deliver story and narrative elements through other means. Call of Duty executive VP and GM Robert Kostich said earlier this year about the lack of a campaign, "Look, it's not a dedicated campaign like it was in the past. We're telling stories differently this year. We think our community is going to love this game from end to end, because it has so much to offer." "I don't think that's going to be a problem really. I think what our community is going to love at the end of the day comes down to the gameplay and the fun you have with it. And I think that's what this game is going to have in spades. This is a little different from what we've done in the past." Black Ops 4 launches on October 12 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. A beta for the game's battle royale mode, Blackout, just concluded after a slightly longer-than-expected run.
  3. As the weather starts to turn chilly, Hearthstone is offering a special bundle and in-game events to match. Next week Blizzard will kick off the "Days of the Frozen Throne" event, featuring a new Tavern Brawl, new quests and loot, and a specially priced bundle. The event celebrates the Knights of the Frozen Throne expansion, which launched in August 2017. That expansion was the first to introduce the new Hero card type, in the form of nine distinct Death Knights. If you're still missing some Death Knights, you can pick up a "Bundle Up Bundle" next week that will offer 30 Frozen Throne packs for $20. That's roughly double the usual packs at that price, but keep in mind that those cards will rotate out of Standard play next spring when the new year launches. The week will also mark a special Tavern Brawl, which has both players begin the game as one of the Death Knights. You can also score a free Golden Happy Ghoul card just for logging in, and two special Legendary quests will offer a whopping 300 gold apiece. The event kicks off on September 19 and lasts through September 24. Knights of the Frozen Throne was one of the most impactful expansions in recent Hearthstone play, and many of the Death Knights still see regular competitive play. Since then Blizzard has been releasing new Hero cards as central characters of the stories in later expansions: Hagatha the Witch in The Witchwood expansion, and Dr. Boom, Mad Genius in The Boomsday Project expansion. One more expansion is planned for this Standard rotation year, which is likely to fall in this calendar year.
  4. Rockstar Games is selling a Red Dead Redemption 2 blanket and it's available for purchase right now. The blanket costs $200, and only ships to U.S. addresses. Rockstar has a few RDR2-themed candles for sale too if you want to create a bit more ambience when you're playing the game this October. The RDR2 blanket is 68 x 39 inches, which is about the size of a single bed mattress. The blanket is felt bound and made from 82% pure virgin wool and 18% cotton. It depicts the game's Van der Linde gang riding against a red background. You can pre-order the blanket right now from GameStop, and it will ship out the same day as RDR2's release. You can also pre-order the candles from GameStop, and they'll ship the same day. If you want one, you've got three options. The Black Glass, Dynamite, and Barrel candles are each appropriately shaped like the item they're named after, and cost $50, $80, and $100 respectfully. Every candle is labeled with the RDR2 logo, and smells like a mixture of blood orange, incense, amber, rockrose, smoked cedar, sandalwood, violet leaf, and juniper. Rockstar has plenty of other physical goodies on the way, if you want to buy even more merchandise.
  5. Bungie has announced details regarding the return of Iron Banner in Destiny 2. The multiplayer mode starts September 18 at 10 AM PDT / 1 PM ET / 6 PM BST and resets with new challenges and rewards on September 25. There are a few changes this time around you'll have to watch out for. The biggest change in Iron Banner is that Power level now matters. On Bungie's website, this new Iron Banner is described as "an arms race" between you and the other players you'll be facing off against, so you'll need to equip your most powerful weapons and gear to hold your own and earn the new rewards. Iron Banner will also offer seven weekly bounties from now on, with each mission having a chance of yielding an Iron Banner-themed reward. Each week, two of the bounties will have a chance of dropping Powerful rewards to improve your Power level if you're struggling with the competitive multiplayer component. Lord Saladin is also back with five new pieces of armor and two new weapons for purchase, which reset with each new Iron Banner event. Each of the seven items that Lord Saladin sells are associated to one of the seven bounties, and you'll have to complete an item's corresponding bounty mission to unlock its availability for purchase. This way, if the item you want doesn't drop, you can just buy it after the mission is over.
  6. If you're not a fan of the white spider logo costume you've probably seen Spidey rock in most of the pre-release videos and images of Marvel's Spider-Man for PS4, then never fear. Not only does the game feature more than 20 alternate suits, but it also features the webslinger's popular Tony Stark-created suit featured in recent big screen films like Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming. The Stark Suit--as it's referred to in the game--is actually one of the first ones you'll have access to. That's a huge plus, as not only is this suit one of the most aesthetically awesome costumes Spidey's worn in either the comics or in movies, it also unlocks what is probably one of the most useful powers in the game: Spider-Bro. Initiating Spider-Bro releases a small drone that flies around Spider-Man and zaps enemies with electricity, rendering them temporarily paralyzed and making them easy pickings. The effect lasts for a decent amount of time as well, meaning Spider-Bro can easily become your favorite crowd control move in the entire game. Unlocking the Stark Suit is pretty straightforward. If you've just started the game and are looking at a mainly empty list of boxes in your suits menu, the Stark Suit is actually eighth on the list. You'll need to be level 10 to get the chance to unlock it, but once you're there, you'll also need a few of the tokens you've likely already been collecting around New York--specifically, one base token, one research token, and three crime tokens. And the high tech Stark Suit isn't the only one from the Homecoming movie featured in the game. If you recall, the Peter Parker in that movie started his crime fighting wearing a simple red hoodie and blue pants, and that simple homemade suit can also eventually be unlocked and worn in this PS4 Spidey title. This suit doesn't have a specific power that it comes with, and will probably take you a while to achieve, as you'll need to find every backpack hidden throughout the game.
  7. Nintendo's online subscription service for Switch launches on September 18, meaning you'll need to pay to play Switch games like Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe online after that date. Naturally, you'll be able to purchase a subscription either through the Eshop or at retailers, but you also have another option for paying for the membership: My Nintendo points. As is the case with many digital Switch games and DLC, you'll be able to use your My Nintendo Gold points toward the purchase of a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. However, as detailed on Nintendo's support website, the points cannot be used for automatic renewals. You also have the option to pay for a subscription using a PayPal account. Gold points are one of two point tiers you can earn using the My Nintendo rewards program. These are accumulated as you purchase Switch games, but the amount you'll receive varies depending on if you buy the titles at retail or digitally through the Eshop. You can read the precise breakdown on My Nintendo. Nintendo is offering Switch Online subscriptions in three increments: one month (US $4 / ÂŁ3.49 / AU $6), three months (US $8 / ÂŁ7 / AU $12), and 12 months (US $20 / ÂŁ18 / AU $30). You'll also have the option to sign up for a 12-month Family Plan, which costs US $35 / ÂŁ31.49 / AU $55 a year and covers up to eight Nintendo Account holders, even on different consoles. When the service launches, you'll be able to sign up for a free seven-day trial, but that will turn into a one-month subscription if you don't cancelbefore the free period ends. In addition to online play, signing up for the Nintendo Switch Online service grants you access to a library of NES games, special member-exclusive offers, and the ability to back up most Switch game save data via the cloud--although there are some restrictions. You can read more about the service in our roundup of everything we know about Nintendo Switch Online.
  8. The next free Sea of Thieves expansion, Forsaken Shores, is not going to launch on time. In a blog post, developer Rare said the expansion will now launch on September 27, which is about one week later than its previously announced September 19 date. Rare did not reveal a specific reason for the delay, but the UK studio said in its blog post that the extra time will help the team deliver a "stable, polished, and bug-free experience." "This was not a decision that was taken lightly, and we know this may disappoint fans who were looking to play the update this week," Rare said. "The who team appreciates the community's understanding for this change in our release plan." Forsaken Shores adds what players have been asking for: more stuff to do. It introduces a new volcanic region that players can explore and complete challenges. You can watch a teaser trailer for the Forsaken Shores update in the video above. The Forsaken Shores expansion follows the Hungering Deep and Cursed Sails add-on that launched earlier this year. Rare is planning more content in the future, while a battle royale mode has not been ruled out.
  9. During Nintendo's September Direct, the company announced a new Joy-Con controller for Switch. These new Joy-Cons are shaped like NES controllers, and you'll only be able to buy them if you're an online subscriber. The new controllers have the same Joy-Con bluetooth connection, so you'll be able to play wirelessly and charge your controller by connecting them to your Switch or a Nintendo charge station. That being said, you can't use the controllers while they're plugged into your Switch, so you can't use them in handheld mode. Two controllers, a right and a left Joy-Con, are sold in each box for $60. Shipments of the controller begin in mid-December 2018.
  10. Insomniac Games has announced that PS4's Spider-Man is getting a New Game Plus mode. The developer revealed that a team is currently working on the mode via a tweet. New Game Plus will allow you to replay through Spider-Man with all of the wall crawlers' abilities and skills that have been unlocked in a previous save. Although it hasn't been confirmed for this game, most New Game Plus modes also increase enemies' health and damage output. A few, like the one in Batman: Arkham Knight, even make minor changes to certain cutscenes and add late-game enemies to the earlier fights. Insomniac doesn't have an estimate for the New Game Plus mode's release date yet. New Game Plus isn't the only post-launch addition coming to Spider-Man. Insomniac has also revealed a three-part DLC expansion for the game titled The City That Never Sleeps. The first part, called The Heist, releases on October 23. The Heist focuses on the return of one of Peter Parker's former flames, Felicia Hardy. Also known as the Black Cat, Felicia is an ex-jewel thief who abandons a life of crime in an attempt to be worthy of Spider-Man's affection. Felicia is referenced throughout the main game in one of the side-quests, promising "her Spider" that she'll see him again soon.
  11. Ubisoft has announced a remaster for Assassin's Creed III. The 2012 entry into Ubisoft's franchise concluded the storyline of modern day protagonist Desmond Miles, and started what would become known as the Kenway Saga. Assassin's Creed III: Remastered can be bought as a standalone title but it also comes included in the season pass for Assassin's Creed Odyssey. Regardless of how you buy it, the game launches for Xbox One, PS4, and PC in March 2019. In our Assassin's Creed III review, Kevin VanOrd gave the game an 8.5/10, writing, "Assassin's Creed 3 is a big game that gives you a lot to do, some of which is fleshed out relatively well, and some of which isn't. It is not, however, content to rest on the series' laurels. It takes chances with its opening, with its story, and with its characters. It expands the series' gameplay in enjoyable and sensible ways. As with many ambitious games, not every arrow fired hits the bull's-eye, yet this big, narratively rich sequel is easy to get invested in. Other games stimulate emotion with manipulative music and teary monologues; Assassin's Creed III rouses your mind and your heart by giving you a glimpse into its characters' souls and letting you judge them on their own merits." The remaster of Assassin's Creed III isn't the only piece of content that comes included in Odyssey's season pass. You'll get the 2014 HD remaster of Assassin's Creed III: Liberation--which we gave a 6/10 in our review--as well. You'll also get two story add-ons that are each divided into three episodes: Legacy of the First Blade and The Fate of Atlantis. Legacy of the First Blade sees Kassandra or Alexios meeting the first individual to use the hidden blade--which Assassin's Creed II tells us is the Persian assassin Darius--and The Fate of Atlantis delves into the history behind the famed underwater city.
  12. Avalanche Studios released the newest video for Just Cause 4, their upcoming open-world action game. It’s the first in their newly started Spotlight series of videos in which the developer will display aspects of Just Cause 4 in greater detail. Today’s video is entirely focusing on the game world, its four distinct biomes and the unique environmental weather threats they pose.
  13. We're in the waning days of Fortnite Season 5, but developer Epic still has some new content in store for the popular battle royale game before Season 6 officially arrives. We've gotten our first glimpse at one upcoming item courtesy of Fortnite's in-game news feed, and it looks like it could shake the game up fairly dramatically. [Update: As teased, the Port-a-Fortress has arrived in Fortnite as part of the 5.41 update, along with a new item for Playground and another limited-time mode, Soaring Solos.] A listing has appeared in Fortnite's News section for an item called the Port-a-Fortress. According to the feed, the item is "coming soon" to the game, presumably as part of this week's update. Based on its name, it sounds like an enhanced version of the Port-a-Fort, a portable item introduced earlier this spring that can spawn a fort a few seconds after being thrown. Based on the Port-a-Fortress's accompanying description, it sounds like it works similarly to the Port-a-Fort. "Toss down the Port-a-Fortress and take defense to new heights," the description reads. You can get a glimpse of the item below.

  15. The next installment in Ubisoft's stealth-action series, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, launches for PS4, Xbox One, and PC in only a few weeks. Ahead of its release, the publisher has announced its DLC plans for the game, and they include an extensive amount of free and paid content set to arrive later this year and into the next. With no new Assassin's Creed game coming in 2019, Ubisoft will support Odyssey with a regular stream of post-launch content. First, the publisher will roll out additional story missions called The Lost Tales of Greece to all players for free. These missions will be released "regularly" between the game's paid DLC episodes and "will feature familiar faces and new characters from the world of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey," according to Ubisoft. In addition to that, all players will be able to take part in daily and weekly contracts, and a new epic ship or mercenary will appear each week. Ubisoft will also release a free Discovery Tour mode like the one added to last year's title, Assassin's Creed Origins, which will allow players to explore the game world and learn more about Ancient Greece without taking on any enemies or quests. A New Game Plus mode and other content drops, like new mythical creatures to battle, are also in the works. Those who purchase the Assassin's Creed Odyssey Season Pass, meanwhile, will receive even more content. First, Season Pass owners will have access to two "major" storylines broken up into three episodes apiece. The first arc, called Legacy of the First Blade, will begin this December and "will introduce players to the first hero to wield the iconic hidden blade." The second story arc, The Fate of Atlantis, kicks off Spring 2019 and is centered around the fabled sunken city. On top of that, players who purchase the Season Pass will receive two remastered Assassin's Creed games: Assassin's Creed III and its previously Vita-exclusive spin-off, Assassin's Creed III: Liberation. The Season Pass costs $40 and is also included in the game's Gold, Ultimate, Spartan and Pantheon Editions. You can read more about each in our Assassin's Creed Odyssey pre-order guide. Assassin's Creed Odyssey releases for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on October 5. Ubisoft recently shared the game's minimum and recommended specs for PC. Unlike previous installments in the series, Assassin's Creed Odyssey places a much greater emphasis on player choice--for both better and worseas we learned in our recent hands-on time with the game.
  16. Blizzard has announced a release date for the recently announced Nintendo Switch version of Diablo III: Eternal Collection. The acclaimed dungeon crawler arrives on Nintendo's hybrid console in North America and Europe on November 2, and it retails for $60 / ÂŁ50. The game is available now for pre-order from various retailers and the Switch Eshop; if you pre-purchase it from the latter, you'll receive up to 300 Gold Points. As its name implies, the Eternal Collection packs in all of the updates and post-release content Blizzard has released for Diablo III to date. Along with the base game, the package includes the Reaper of Souls expansion as well as Challenge Rifts, Kanai's Cube, and the Rise of the Necromancer pack, which introduced the Necromancer class to the game. Adventure Mode is also unlocked from the start. On top of that, the Switch edition of Diablo III: Eternal Collection comes with a handful of exclusive Legend of Zelda-themed crossover items, including a Cucco pet, a Triforce portrait, and a set of Majora's Mask-inspired wings. Players will also be able to customize their gear to look like the King of Evil using a Ganondorf transmog.
  17. Nintendo's online subscription service for Switch is almost here, and one of the benefits you get for subscribing is access to a library of NES games. Each of these classic titles supports some form of online play, whether that be competing directly against another player in Balloon Fight or taking turns controlling the action in a traditionally single-player title, but up until now, it has been unclear whether or not the NES games could be played offline. It turns out they can, but there's a slight caveat. According to the FAQ page on Nintendo's website, the NES games included in the Nintendo Switch Online service can be played offline for up to seven days. That means you'll periodically need to "check in" online every week in order to verify that you still have an active subscription and maintain your access to the games. 20 NES titles will be available once the Nintendo Switch Online service launches on September 18, including some of the console's most iconic games, with additional titles coming each month. As previously mentioned, each NES game supports online multiplayer; in single-player titles, you'll be able to switch between who's controlling the game, or the second player can use a hand-shaped cursor to point out hints and applaud certain actions. You can take a look at the complete launch lineup below: Balloon Fight Baseball Donkey Kong Double Dragon Dr. Mario Excitebike Ghosts'n Goblins Gradius Ice Climber Ice Hockey The Legend of Zelda Mario Bros. Pro Wrestling River City Ransom Soccer Super Mario. Bros. Super Mario Bros. 3 Tecmo Bowl Tennis Yoshi In addition to the NES library, Nintendo Switch Online subscribers will be able to back up their Switch data via cloud saves; however, not all Switch games will support the feature, and you'll need to have an active membership in order to keep your cloud saves. There will also be "special offers" exclusive to Switch Online subscribers, such as a pair of NES-shaped Joy-Cons for use with the aforementioned NES titles. Nintendo will offer Switch Online subscriptions in three increments; you'll also have the option to purchase an annual family plan, which will extend the service's benefits to up to eight Nintendo Accounts across multiple consoles. When the service launches, you'll be able to sign up for a seven-day free trial, but if you don't cancel before the trial period ends, it will automatically turn into a one-month subscription. You can read more about the service in our roundup of everything we know about Nintendo Switch Online.
  18. NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 was supposed to arrive on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC this May, but it's now officially launching on October 16. You can see the arcade sports game in action in the trailer above. As it turns out, that delay was due to developer Saber Interactive finalizing a publishing deal with 2K--hence the "2K" now in the game's name. It's a deal which Saber CEO Matthew Karch says has been very positive for the game. "The most fundamental change is that it's just been improved in every aspect and every facet," he told GameSpot. "Overall, thanks to our collaboration with 2K, this is the game we would have wanted to make had we been able to pull this off in round one. This would have been an ideal way to launch the franchise." The partnership has allowed Saber Interactive to make use of 2K's licenses, including music tracks and former NBA player likenesses that otherwise wouldn't appear in the game. It's also put the team in close contact with Visual Concepts, the 2K studio currently developing NBA 2K19. This has given Saber the opportunity to receive critical feedback while developing Playgrounds 2.
  19. Nintendo is rolling out its paid online service for Switch very soon, and once it's live, you'll need to have a subscription in order to continue playing most Switch games, such as Splatoon 2 and the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, online with others. However, a handful of games will be exempt from this requirement, including Epic's massively popular battle royale game, Fortnite. Just as on PS4 and Xbox One, you won't be required to have an online membership to play Fortnite online on Switch, even after the system's paid service launches. As Nintendo clarified in an FAQ on its support website, Fortnite is one of the few online multiplayer titles that can be played without a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. Nintendo didn't specify what other games will be playable without a Nintendo Switch Online membership, although this will presumably extend to other free-to-play titles as well, such as Paladins and the upcoming Warframe. On its website, the company has been adding disclaimers at the bottom of pages for games that require a subscription to help you see if you'll need to pay to continue playing that title online. If you've yet to pick up a Switch, Nintendo recently announced a new Fortnite: Double Helix Switch bundle. It retails for the same price as standard Switch--$300--and comes with the console, a game download of Fortnite, and a Double Helix Set, which includes a unique outfit, back bling, glider, pickaxe, and 1,000 V-bucks. The bundle goes on sale beginning October 5. The Nintendo Switch Online service, meanwhile, launches on September 18, following the release of Switch's 6.0 update. On top of the ability to play online, subscribers will get access to a library of NES games and other perks, such as cloud saves and special offers. You can find more information about the service in our roundup of everything we know about Nintendo Switch Online.
