Elton John said Saturday that the hardest thing to watch in "Rocketman", the biopic of his life that premiered at the Cannes film festival, were the parts about his family life. "It's hard to watch the family stuff. The drugs stuff I can handle because I did it, but the family stuff is touching," he told Variety in an interview on the warts-and-all movie about his wild rock 'n' roll years. The film won an extended standing ovation in Cannes, with critics hailing its honesty and the way it deals frankly with the British singer's struggles with drugs, alcohol and his own sexuality. "Part of the reason I became the addict that I was (was) because of my background," said the 72-year-old megastar. "I really value the fact that (my parents) stayed together for me when they were unhappy with each other.... I've come to understand the circumstances that they went through and I'm not angry or bitter about that whatsoever," he said. "But it did leave a scar and that scar took a long time to heal, and maybe it will never heal totally." John had a much-publicised eight-year feud with his formidable mother Shelia Farebrother, who he accused of trying to interfere in his life, but they buried the hatchet just before her death at the age of 92 in 2017. An only child, John was raised by his grandparents until he was six before moving in with his parents. They divorced when he was 14. The movie also explores the singer's long and successful songwriting partnership with lyricist Bernie Taupin, which produced seven consecutive US number one albums between 1972 and 1975. "The wonderful thing is the relationship I have with Bernie, which is the glue of the movie," the singer said. "We've been together for over 50 years and to have this relationship being so strong... means a lot in this kind of business that we work in."

Amazon Studios has acquired the U.S. rights to âLes MisĂ©rables,â the new film from writer and director Ladj Ly, Variety has learned. The sale comes following the movieâs world premiere in competition at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday evening, where it earned sterling reviews from critics who were dazzled by Lyâs look at a life in the projects. Netflix was also believed to be pursuing the film, with insiders pegging the final price for the pic at $1.5 million. Itâs a major sale for a small French-language movie, an achievement thatâs all the more remarkable, given that it marks Lyâs feature-length narrative film debut. In a largely favorable review, Varietyâs Guy Lodge wrote that the film âsimmers with urgent anger over police brutalityâ and compared Lyâs work to that of Spike Lee. Giordano Gederlini and Alexis Manenti co-wrote the film alongside Ly, with Toufik Ayadi and Christophe Barral of SRAB films producing. Wild Bunch is handling international sales. CAA Media Finance represented the U.S. rights and also reps Ly. Ly is a native of Montfermeil, a suburb of France best known as the location of ThĂ©nardiersâ inn in Victor Hugoâs classic novel âLes MisĂ©rables.â The director became well known for his web documentaries showing the often brutal realities of living in a downtrodden community. âLes MisĂ©rablesâ is inspired by the 2005 French riots, a three-week period of civil unrest characterized by violence, looting and car burnings. The film examines the tensions between neighborhood residents and police that helped inflame the rioting. It centers on StĂ©phane (Damien Bonnard), who has recently joined the anti-crime brigade in Montfermeil and his two partners. The men find themselves overrun during the course of an arrest. Amazon was one of the biggest buyers at this yearâs Sundance Film Festival, shelling out tens of millions for films such as the Mindy Kaling comedy âLate Nightâ and the Adam Driver political thriller âThe Report.â

Heâs going from sex symbol to bat symbol. Sources tell Variety that Robert Pattinson is in negotiations to play âThe Batmanâ in Matt Reevesâ forthcoming superhero film, which hits theaters June 25, 2021. While sources say itâs not yet a done deal, Pattinson is the top choice and itâs expected to close shortly. Warner Bros. had no comment. Pre-production on the Warner Bros.-DC Comics pic is expected to start this summer. Reeves, the filmmaker behind the last two âPlanet of the Apesâ sequels, assumed âBatmanâ directing duties from Ben Affleck in January 2017 and has been developing the elusive project ever since. Affleck and Warner Bros. began discussing the actor-director leaving the Caped Crusader behind following âJustice League,â allowing Reeves to pick his own Bruce Wayne. Reeves will produce âThe Batmanâ with his âPlanet of the Apesâ collaborator Dylan Clark. Pattinson was cast even as Reeves continues to polish a final version of the script.

Earthâs Mightiest Heroes have finally met their match. The debut of Lionsgate and Summit Entertainmentâs âJohn Wick: Chapter 3 â Parabellumâ should end âAvengers: Endgameâsâ reign at No. 1 with an estimated $56 million from 3,850 North American locations. The threequel took in $22.67 million on Friday. âJohn Wick: Chapter Two,â the previous installment of the franchise, opened to $30.4 million in February of 2017. Keanu Reeves stars in âJohn Wick 3,â alongside franchise returnees Lawrence Fishburne and Ian McShane and newcomers Halle Berry, Anjelica Huston, Asia Kate Dillon, and Lance Reddick. Chad Stahelski returned to helm the neo-noir thriller, with a script from Derek Kolstad, Shay Hatten, Chris Colllins, and Marc Abrams. âJohn Wick 3â holds an A- CinemaScore and 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. âAvengers: Endgame,â on the other hand, should notch around $29 million in its fourth weekend in theaters for the second place spot. âEndgameâ is currently sitting at around $2.5 billion worldwide â the second highest-grossing film of all time, behind âAvatarâ with $2.78 billion. Another new offering for the weekend, âA Dogâs Journey,â is debuting to about $8 million and No. 4 from 3,267 domestic sites. The follow-up to 2017âs âA Dogâs Purposeâ sees the return of Dennis Quaid and Josh Gad, and was directed by Gail Mancuso from W. The teen drama stars âGrown-ishâsâ Yara Shahidi and Charles Melton and follows a young couple that falls in love despite one of their families facing deportation. Tracy Oliver wrote the screenplay with Ry Russo-Young directing. The second frame of Warner Bros.â âDetective Pikachuâ will likely take third with about $22 million. Itâs taken in $69 million domestically in its first week of release, in addition to another $112 million from overseas markets. By the standards of long-running series, âGame of Thronesâ maps onto its decade unusually well. This is a very small thing. That the fantasy show, which ran with a sort of mathematically pleasing symmetry from 2011 to 2019, is more authentically of the 2010s than, say, âMad Menâ (2007-2015) or âKilling Eveâ (2018-the future) is of interest only to media scholars or to those who take pleasure in number games. But itâs also not nothing. That âThronesâ so thoroughly dominated effectively an entire one of the ten-year spans by which we measure history feels proper. As it approaches its final episode, to air May 19, the show is evincing reactions that both prove the hold it has over viewers over its decade run, and that do something more. The general consensus on the seriesâ endgame â that its portrayal of putative heroine Daenerys slipping into the behavior of a thuggish war criminal is a betrayal of the universe viewers thought they knew â feels like the general public metabolizing one more parting blow from a historical moment that has already eroded the sense of secure and predictable political reality. One aspect of the âThronesâ reign that has gone a bit underexamined is the artistic context in which it emerged â an Obama-era ferment that made use of a quiet moment in political history to imagine a counter-universe of petty feuds and of endless, thrilling villainy. In 2011, âThronesâ narrowly preceded âHomeland.â The Showtime Emmy-winner was the first in a wave of shows of various genres and degrees of quality that used federal-level American politics to stage similar stories, in which canny operators manipulating the levers of power took advantage of a climate of chaos and of their opponentsâ weakness to amass power. On âHomeland,â Claire Danesâ Carrie Mathison was entangled in a struggle with one such operator, in the form of Damian Lewisâ Nicholas Brody; on âScandalâ and âVeepâ (which began in 2012) and on âHouse of Cardsâ (2013), corruption was so endemic that those whoâd elsewhere be the villains were our protagonists. âThronesâ fit into this wave of shows, and did not. Like them, it was a critically-regarded awards magnet and a near-instant zeitgeist hit. Also like them, it provided the thrill of political transgression during an unusually staid moment, dreaming up a government awash in the messiness so pleasantly unavailable in waking life. Unlike them, though, it did not literally â or, in any purposeful sense, allegorically â depict American politics. And it featured easily rootable moral centers, from the supporting cast (dogged, stoic Arya; wise, soulful Tyrion) to the two leads, duty-bound Jon Snow and visionary Daenerys Targaryen. From its start, âThronesâ had a sourer vision than any of its near-peers, but also seemed, to some eyes, to bear far more sweetness. Both glimmered with something other than perfect virtue at times, with Jon often a bit feckless and Daenerys driven by a politics that centered her righteousness, but both, too, were the photogenic protagonists of a series on which they were as often shown to be, comparatively, in the right, and deeply sympathetic besides. Their flaws, not so deep to make them villains, were what made them human. âScandal,â âHouse of Cards,â and âVeepâ had no such characters falling so well short of outright villainy (Olivia Pope was sympathetically lovelorn, but she was also horrifically complicit in high crimes; Claire Underwood wanted to help people, but her ambition had a body count). And they also have nothing more to accomplish: All have wrapped up in the past thirteen months, to the end more or less honoring the pact they made with their audience to depict a world shot through with moral compromise. All three (âHomelandâ has a season left) also ended serene in the understanding that they can be said to have somehow âpredictedâ the political world of today, unimaginable when the decade began. (That âVeepâ lost its balance in the Trump era is a matter of degrees of villainy and not of fundamental sensibility.) As âThronesâ concludes, it inverts the formula of shows it is like-but-not: A vocal segment of its audience feels as though a compact theyâd entered has been violated precisely because the show so perfectly suits its moment. Which is not to say that âThronesâ has been trying to make statements about the particular world we inhabited in the years it aired â addressing the manner by which politics are practiced throughout history, it has matters more sweeping, or at least less specific, on its mind. But its vision of a state of affairs in which entropy rules, one in which chaos is so endemic that even would-be heroes are sucked into incompetence or derangement, came preposterously on time. Daenerysâ coming to be governed by a vengeful streak that had always been present doesnât rhyme with any one political figure precisely, but evokes a tone of cruelty that thrives at our moment; vastly less-commented-upon but similarly striking is Jonâs shirking of seeming responsibility, a choice that has come to seem irresponsible and perhaps even weak. That this, too, could be an intentional reversal of tropes â that the heroic conqueror can be more vicious than her rivals and that the glamorously glowering prince can be saddled with insecurities as a way of examining the stories we tell ourselves about those who lead us â has been somewhat lost in the reaction to the showâs final season. If âThronesââ final season met its political moment with astounding clarity â falling, just as the world did from Brexit to Orban to Duterte to Trump, into an all-out melee of hatreds before the decade closed â it was actually an imperfect fit for its cultural moment. It began as a peer of âScandalâ and âHouse of Cardsâ but ended, having enraptured an audience without parallel on TV, a peer of nothing but the âStar Warsâ and Marvel universes. A viewership that large will necessarily have a flattening effect. As the audience passes understandings of characters back and forth like trading cards, âStar Warsââ Rey becomes an icon of discovering oneâs power, while Marvelâs Captain America stands in for rectitude and sacrifice. Those franchises, part of a shared heritage that spans back decades and that are ultimately rooted in the joys of predictability, can bear their characters becoming memes. âThrones,â which sought a massive audience through its staggering investment in visual grandeur and its sweeping story, probably could not have. It, for instance, put forward a central figure was both motivated by a compelling liberation theology and by less laudable impulses â and saw her read, in manners the show sometimes played into, as a meme-ready figure who was an easy analogue for Hillary Clinton, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Elizabeth Warren at various moments. Standing unscathed after emerging from flames or being passed around on the shoulders of her loving subjects, Daenerys was power, potency, freedom, with the swell of the music eliding just how much she needed her subjectsâ fealty. Who cared? We at home loved her too. Like Rey or Captain America, Daenerys came to stand for one powerful thing, even when the story George R. R. Martin had written poked out from behind the epic David Benioff and D. B. Weiss shot to try to tell us otherwise. And whatâs more 2010s than that? One wants to resist making the story of a ten-year-span all about Trump, but the concept of an arc-bending-towards-justice narrative growing so compelling that one is convinced a dark subtext isnât there â only to be gracelessly jerked back at a pivotal, painful moment â recurs again and again in the story of our time. Watching the streets of Kingâs Landing burn beneath Daenerys, invisible in the sky and finally unknowable even as an icon, viewers were pulled, so viscerally as to provoke nightmares, into the chaos their queen had emptily promised to resolve. Even those who thought the moment tracked could understand why fans were angry; so many people had felt some version of this narrative hairpin in the preceding years. The comfort âThronesâ provides even its disillusioned fans is that it will end â and that even if that ending is unspeakably dark, that it can exist as a closed-ended story to be debated, and re-evaluated, and shifted off the coming âBest of the Decadeâ lists if need be. Offscreen, the pain of heroes unable to meaningfully fight back, and of the flames of madness coming to govern the world wonât end with this series, or even with the ten-year period it so perfectly encapsulated. âGame of Thronesâ was the show of its moment â and that moment threatens to continue after âThrones,â and after the âThronesâ decade.

The early Champions League eliminations of Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid are disappointing in a sporting sense and also in a financial sense. The losses in the last 16 could see the two capital city sides miss out on up to 45 million euros. Last year, for example, Real Madrid earned 85.5m euros from their triumph in the tournament, while they took in 86m euros the season previously. In that same 2016/17 season, Atletico Madrid collected around 67m euros for reaching the semi-finals, where they lost to Los Blancos. The economic situation has changed this year and the prize money has gone up, with the amount for the winner up to around 115m euros. Having gone out so early, Real Madrid are set to earn around 70m euros for this season's efforts, while Atletico Madrid are to earn around 67m euros. The exact figures won't be known until later as there are a number of variables involved, but it's likely that the two Spanish sides will take in around 45m euros less than the winning team.

As Liverpool prepare for their latest Champions League adventure in Munich tonight, the troubled career of their former goalkeeper Loris Karius shows no sign of improvement. A year ago, Karius was part of the Liverpool line-up easing past Porto in the last 16 of Europeâs premier competition. Now it has emerged the keeper is in dispute with his current team Besiktas, his agent contacting FIFA claiming he has four months worth of unpaid wages outstanding by the Turkish club. Karius signed a two-year loan deal with the Turks last summer, hoping to revive his career after the calamitous Champions League final when he made two extraordinary errors in Liverpoolâs 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid. Unfortunately, his form has not been good. He has been heavily criticised by supporters, and last week his manager Senol Gunes said he was only picking him because there is no alternative, claiming Karius âlacks motivationâ. Now it has emerged Kariusâ agent contacted FIFA last month to complain the 25-year-old is owed around ÂŁ1 million in wages. There is anticipation the world governing body will intervene. The goalkeeper finds himself isolated in Turkey, Liverpool aware of his predicament but with no plans to cut short his loan spell, hoping matters will be resolved. Besiktasâ coach, however, has not held back in his criticism. "Karius has gone a bit stagnant, something is wrong with his electricity, motivation, enthusiasm for the game,â said Gunes. "He does not really feel a part of the team. "It's something we haven't been able to work out and, of course, I am partly to blame for this.â A FIFA spokesman confirmed they are investigating the complaint from Karius. âWe can confirm that we have received a claim from the player Loris Karius against the club Besiktas,â said a FIFA spokesman. âThe matter is currently being investigated and consequently we cannot provide any further comments.â Telegraph Sport approached Besiktas for comment but did not reply.

Iâm not trying to open up the impossible debate about Messi vs Ronaldo, but for those that do love to compare the two, would Ronaldo winning the Champions League with Juventus be the thing that would swing voters in his favour? Long way to go etc, but it would be a bit bananas. For what itâs worth I think they represent the two wonderful types footballers. Messi is born with it and plays like heâs five years old (seriously, watch his childhood videos on YouTube, the moves are the same). Heâs got a smile on his face and loves it. Ronaldo is at the limits of every aspect physically and is a product of amazing dedication and hard work. He obviously had talent too but he wasnât born to be this Ronaldo, his sheer bloody mindedness turned him into the man he wanted to be. Tonight I think he can take a f**king bow. Marvellous footballer.

Real Madridâs 4-1 win at Real Valladolid on Sunday was a welcome return to winning ways for the outgoing European champions, but it was never likely to save Santi Solariâs job. The Argentineâs cards were marked after three disastrous home defeats in the space of six days ensured there would be no additions to Los Blancosâ well-stocked trophy room this season. Losing twice at home to eternal rivals Barcelona was bad enough, but the 4-1 capitulation against Ajax that brought Madridâs recent European domination to an end was the final straw. Decisive action was required from the clubâs hierarchy to appease the mutinous fans, and Solari â who continued to have the air of an interim manager despite being on a permanent contract â was always going to be first in line to take the fall. While it was expected that a certain former manager would return to take the reins at the BernabĂ©u, it was a surprise when it turned out to be Zinedine Zidane and not JosĂ© Mourinho. Not even ten months have passed since Zidane shocked Madrid president Florentino PĂ©rez by walking out just days after delivering the clubâs third consecutive Champions League title. Though he has not been away long, an awful lot has gone down at the BernabĂ©u in his absence, including the controversial appointment and ignominious departure of Julen Lopetegui, and the sale of record goalscorer Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus. Given his record of success at the club and his standing among the fans and players, it is easy to see why PĂ©rez wanted Zidane back. But it is less obvious to see the appeal for Zidane. Having gone out on a high, why would he want to go back and potentially tarnish his near-perfect record? This will be the first season of his managerial career that wonât end with him lifting the Champions League trophy. The Frenchman said that he came back because the call for help came from the club he loves, and he felt compelled to answer. But that probably doesnât paint the full picture. There must have been a greater motivation for him to go back and risk his flawless reputation. Perhaps there is a feeling of unfinished business. Throughout his time in charge, Zidane was given very little backing by PĂ©rez in the transfer market. His hugely talented squad was inherited from previous managers. Maybe now, with the squad ripe for an overhaul, he fancies the opportunity to build his own group of players? It is unlikely he would have returned to the club without the promise of money being spent in the transfer market. At his unveiling, Zidane denied that PĂ©rez had given him any promises of investment in the squad, but he did repeatedly emphasise the need for changes at the club ahead of next season. The squad has been in need of renovation for some time, and PĂ©rez may have belatedly woken up to that fact. In recent years he seemed more concerned with refurbishing the stadium than the squad, but dwindling attendances and poor performances in all competitions may have refocused his mind. Some big names will surely leave this summer. Gareth Bale, Luka ModriÄ and Karim Benzema are all likely to depart, and the futures of Isco and Marcelo are far from secure. Anyone who leaves will need to be replaced, and the marquee signing that failed to materialise in the wake of Ronaldoâs departure cannot be postponed any longer. Being charged with rebuilding the squad is a great opportunity for Zidane, but it is also a huge challenge, and one that he hasnât experienced before. In his previous successful spell in charge, he took a group of players who already knew each other and the club, and got the best out of them by instilling confidence and fostering a great team spirit. Integrating new players and getting a squad to gel is different art altogether, which can take time to bear fruit â and Madridâs fans and board are not famed for their patience. When he took over from Rafa BenĂtez in January 2016, he found a squad in far better shape than the one he has now. He had a raft of world-class talent at the peak of their powers. Now, those powers are on the wane for much of the squad, and the greatest talent of all is no longer at the club. This is a problem for Zidane. He was not the most flexible tactician in his last spell at the BernabĂ©u, and his set-up was designed to get the best out of Ronaldo. With Ronaldo gone, he will have to devise a new way of playing to get the best out of his team. Securing Zidaneâs return is a coup for PĂ©rez, and the return of a legend has brought some much-needed positivity back to a club that has endured an uncharacteristically muddled time of late. But Zidaneâs return doesnât guarantee a return to success. There is still a huge amount of work to be done to bring Madrid back to the top of the tree. Appointing Zidane last time round was a gamble that paid off massively for PĂ©rez. Now he is gambling on lightning striking twice â and the odds on that happening are far longer.

Philippe Coutinho has fuelled speculation that he could leave Barcelona in the summer by admitting âyou never know what the future holds.â Rumours were rife in the January transfer window that Manchester United were interested in taking Coutinho to Old Trafford following the Brazilianâs mixed start to life at the Camp Nou. That speculation has persisted since with Sunday Mirror claiming that the 26-year-old âhas issued a come-and-get-me plea to Manchester Unitedâ. However, the Independent reported only a couple of days later that United will âpress aheadâ with an ÂŁ80million move for England international Sancho as the winger âfits the profileâ of player they are looking for. It is believed that the club are not looking to âprioritiseâ Coutinhoâs position and want to focus their efforts on players that can play further up the pitch, like Sancho. The Brazilian scored in Barcaâs 5-1 victory over Lyon on Wednesday night, which was his first goal since January. Coutinho, though, seemed to refuse to rule out a summer move despite receiving the backing of several of his Barcelona team-mates after being jeered over the weekend. âIn the last few weeks, months even, Iâve not been playing well,â Coutinho said. âBut I still want to improve. âI came to Barcelona to give my best. I live for the moment. You never know what the future holds. I am happy with my performance today.â

Robert Lewandowski has criticised Bayern Munichâs tactics during their 3-1 loss to Liverpool at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday. Sadio Maneâs brilliant opener was cancelled out by Joel Matipâs own goal before half-time but Virgil Van Dijkâs first Champions League goal for the club meant Bayern then had to score two more. Mane converted a far-post diving header late on. The result means Liverpool progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League after the first leg at Anfield ended goalless. âOf course, we knew it would be a tough game,â Lewandowski told Viasport. âBut in both games I think we played too defensive. âWe didnât try to push forward to create situations â in the first game and today. âWe didnât risk much, we were playing at home it was our game but thatâs why I think Liverpool beat us. âWe were playing too deep, we didnât take risks, I donât know why. âWe tried to push Liverpool but offensively sometimes it was two against four players and thatâs why we didnât do much. âI have a lot of duels today, it was very difficult because I was alone. âIf you are alone against two or three good players itâs very difficult to play.â

Gareth Southgate says there is âno wayâ he would walk away from the England job before Euro 2020. Handed the reins â initially on a temporary basis â after Sam Allardyceâs abrupt exit in September 2016, the 48-year-old has flourished as manager of the Three Lions. Southgate led England to the World Cup semi-finals last year and has another crack at silverware to look forward to this summer in the inaugural Nations League finals â success that led to links to Manchester United at the start of the year. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is now set to take that job but the former defender says he would not have moved to Old Trafford anyway with such an exciting year or so on the horizon and having signed a deal until 2022 in October. âWell, first and foremost, I love the job Iâm in,â Southgate said when that link to United was mentioned. âIâm proud to be England manager. Weâve got a second semi-final coming this summer and a Euros at home â well, I say at home, the group stage is at home â so there is no way Iâd be walking away from this. âAfter those Euros, people might want me or might not want me, here or somewhere else. âYou canât look too far ahead in football. Youâre quite right, Iâm contracted to 2022 â or whenever that World Cup will finish! I donât look any further than that. âIâm sure at some point in my life, Iâll want to go back to club football because people will say, âoh well he did OK as an international manager, but he didnât work as a club managerâ. âHow could you when you step out the dressing room? What do you know, really, two years into your coaching career? âI think at this point, at some stage in the distant future, I would want to do that, but I actually donât know, because there might be something else more important in my life and I might be doing something completely different, I think itâs too hard. âIâve never quite understood in this game, people who have a coaching plan or a plan of where they want to go because I didnât expect to be manager of Middlesbrough two days before I got offered it. âI didnât expect to be England senior manager six hours before I was offered it. âHow do you ever plot and predict where you stand and where you sit in the pecking order of jobs that might or might not be available? âI think I just enjoy the role Iâm in and try and fulfil that to the best of my ability.â

Real Madrid have agreed to sign defender Eder Militao from Porto at the end of the season for his buy-out clause of 50m euros (ÂŁ42.7m). Both clubs announced the move on Thursday and the Spanish club say the 21-year-old Brazil international will sign a contract until 2025 with them. The centre-back is Real Madrid's first signing following the return of Zinedine Zidane as manager. Militao was signed by Porto from Sao Paulo in August 2018. He has made 34 appearances this season and helped Portuguese champions into the Champions League quarter-finals.

Birmingham City and Aston Villa have both been charged by the Football Association for failing to control their players during Sunday's Championship match. A melee involving players from both teams occurred in the fifth minute after Blues midfielder Maikel Kieftenbeld fouled Jack Grealish. Villa captain Grealish was attacked by a Birmingham fan in the 10th minute before scoring the game's only goal. The clubs have until Monday to respond. Dutchman Kieftenbeld was booked for his late challenge on Grealish, which set the tone for a heated derby match at St Andrew's. Grealish was subsequently attacked by Paul Mitchell, who ran on to the pitch and hit the Villa midfielder from behind. Mitchell, of Rubery, Worcestershire, was jailed for 14 weeks on Mondayafter admitting assault and encroachment on to the pitch. He was also ordered to pay ÂŁ350 in fines and costs and has been banned from attending any football matches in the UK for 10 years.

For the first time in 10 seasons, four teams from one country will compete in the last eight of the Champions League. Liverpool's victory over Bayern Munich in the last 16 means England will now provide 50% of the quarter-final teams in Europe's top club competition, with Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham the other Premier League sides present. It evokes memories of the 2000s and the two successive seasons that England provided four quarter-finalists (along with six finalists in five years and two winners - Liverpool in 2005 and Manchester United in 2008). But is this season's repeat a sign of England's resurgence on the biggest stage?

Last year's finalists eased into the quarter-finals courtesy of two goals from forward Sadio Mane and another from defender Virgil van Dijk. "The second half was very mature," said German manager Klopp. "In the moments we did play football we immediately destroyed the organisation of Bayern. It's absolutely deserved." Liverpool's win means there are now four Premier League sides in the last eight, following victories for Tottenham, Manchester United and Manchester City. Barcelona, Juventus, Porto and Ajax make up the rest of the quarter-finalists. The draw takes place on Friday. Klopp added: "Whoever we get as an opponent we will take. The boys love the competition, they really dig in in these moments. "The attitude was outstanding. The front three were outstanding, the boys who came on helped a lot. "We've laid down a marker tonight that LFC is back on the top level of European football."
