  1. It's not uncommon for your browser to crash or close without warning. This could be due to a variety of errors, but nowadays, most modern browsers can help you restore your last browsing session. This way, you can pick up from where you left off. In this article, we'll go over how to reopen closed tabs in Google Chrome and Firefox, as well as how to make Chrome and Firefox restore your previous sessions upon launch. How to Restore Your Previous Session on Startup in Chrome Want Chrome to reopen your closed tabs every time you launch Chrome? Follow these steps to get started: Open Chrome. Click on the three dots menu in the top right corner of the browser, and then click on Settings. On the left panel, scroll down and click On startup. Select Continue where you left off. Close or exit the page. Your changes will be automatically saved. How to Restore Closed Tabs in Chrome If you accidentally closed a tab in Chrome, here's how to quickly reopen it: Open Chrome. Click on the triple dots menu in the top right corner of the screen. Scroll down to History and hover over it. A submenu will appear, showing you Recently Closed Tabs, including tabs from other synced devices. Click on the individual tabs to restore them. Note, however, that in Incognito Mode (private browsing mode), Chrome will not restore recently closed tabs because it does not save your browsing history in this mode. How to Restore Your Previous Session on Startup in Firefox Here's how to configure Firefox to always show your tabs and windows from the previous session upon launch: Open Firefox. Click on the hamburger menu in the top right corner of the screen, and click on Options. The General panel will open by default. Under the "Startup" heading, check the Restore previous session box. Close the window, and your changes will be automatically saved. Note that restoring your previous session can keep you logged in to sites you were visiting before the crash. If you were using private browsing mode, however, Firefox will clear your search and browsing history when you close your private browsing tabs and windows. How to Manually Restore Your Previous Session in Firefox If you accidentally close your browser, you can recover tabs and windows from a previous session by doing the following: Open Firefox, and click on the hamburger menu to your top right. From here, click on Restore Previous Session. This option will be grayed out if you have already used it. If you're restoring your session after an unexpected crash, you should see the screen shown below. To reopen your previous session, follow these steps: Click on Restore Session to pick up from where you left off. This works even in a system crash. You can also click on the View Previous Tabs dropdown menu to restore individual tabs. How to Access Recently Closed Tabs in Firefox To reopen closed tabs in Firefox, simply do the following: Open Firefox. Click the Library button, and click on History. Click on Recently Closed Tabs to restore tabs individually. You can also scroll down, and click on Reopen All Tabs to restore your entire session. In addition, you can also select Recently Closed Windows to browse through and reopen any closed windows. RELATED:How To Block Or Allow Autoplay In Firefox Alternatively, you can also restore closed tabs by accessing your browsing history: Open Firefox. Press Ctrl + H (or Command + Y on a Mac). You can click on Today, Yesterday, Last 7 days, This month, or Older than 6 months to attempt to recover your previous browsing sessions from that period. Click on the links to restore your previous tabs. Never Lose a Browsing Session Again The ability to restore your previous sessions and tabs can save you the hassle of having to start over each time your session is interrupted. However, remember to sign out of sensitive accounts if sharing a computer. This is because restoring a previous session can keep you logged in to sites you previously visited
  2. It doesn't matter where in the world you live; there are times when you're going to come across blocked sites and a restricted internet. If you come across an internet block, don't panic. Keep reading to find out more how to bypass barred sites and internet restrictions. Why Do Blocked Sites Exist? The possible reasons for the blocks are numerous. Firstly, lots of services use geo-blocking tools to restrict access to their content in certain countries. The issue is perhaps most commonly associated with Netflix's catalog. However, it can also apply to videos on social media (such as sports clips), news articles, and even entire services which are not available outside of their country of origin (like Hulu). Secondly, governments often block access to sites to suit their agenda. The Twitter block in China is perhaps the most famous example, but we've also seen Turkey block access to social media in an attempt to quell protests in 2016 and Sri Lanka stop access to Facebook in the aftermath of the April 2019 terrorist attacks, supposedly to prevent the spread of fake news. Thirdly, employers often block sites on their internal networks. Heaven forbid that you waste a few minutes of their time checking Facebook… Lastly, some countries have odd laws that can restrict access to certain types of material. The UK's controversial porn ban, which required users to verify their age, and Germany's crusade against YouTube are two of the most notable cases. How to Bypass Blocked Sites If you run into a restricted site, what can you do? Here are the best ways to bypass blocked sites. 1. Use a VPN The most popular way of accessing blocked internet sites is to use a high-quality paid Virtual Private Network (VPN). VPNs have many benefits, but from a blocked sites standpoint, it's the technology's ability to provide you with an IP address in another country that's the most important. The foreign IP address makes it appear as though you are based in a different location. Thus, you won't trigger a site's geo-blocks and can circumnavigate restrictions. Some services theoretically block access from VPN IP addresses. In practice, this has resulted in a massive game of cat and mouse, in which the VPN providers are generally victorious. VPNs are incredibly easy to use: download the app onto your phone or computer, enter your login credentials, and choose the network that you want to connect to. Need a VPN? You can score discounted plans with CyberGhost and ExpressVPN if you sign up using these links. Both are reputable, performant, and mindful of your privacy. 2. Use a Smart DNS The recent clampdown on VPNs by services like Netflix and BBC iPlayer has resulted in a growth of smart DNS providers. Smart DNS services have some pros and cons when considered in contrast to VPNs. One of the most significant advantages of using a smart DNS to get around a website block is internet speed. Unlike VPNs, which route all your web traffic through a different network, smart DNS providers only need to reroute information about your location. This process results in a faster browsing experience. On the downside, DNS services do not offer any of the same privacy benefits as VPNs. They do not encrypt your traffic, nor do they change your IP. If authorities in your location are likely to prosecute based on the sites you visit, a smart DNS provider is not right for you. One of the best smart DNS providers is Getflix. 3. Use a Free Proxy If you need to quickly access a blocked website on a one-time basis, a free proxy might be the way to go. A proxy will hide your IP address, thus helping to disguise your location. It will not, however, encrypt your traffic. The lack of encryption means proxies are not as secure as VPNs; they are an excellent option to get around blocks on work and school networks but are not suitable for browsing which requires anonymity. Proxies are typically much slower than VPNs. You'll also find they often have issues with page formatting and images. Both of these problems preclude them from being a reliable long-term solution. Check out our guide to some of the best proxies for geo-blocked content if you'd like to learn more. 4. Use a Site's IP Address When you think of web addresses, you probably think of the domain name (e.g. www.makeuseof.com) that you type into your browser's address bar. In practice, the domain name is like a veneer for the IP address. It's the IP address that points at a server and directs your traffic. DNS servers are responsible for converting domain names into their associated IP addresses. However, if you know a site's IP address, you can enter it directly into your browser, and you will still end up viewing the site. Because many networks only block domain name URLs and not their underlying IP addresses, this trick is often a great way to circumvent internet restrictions. The same principle applies to short URLs. It's unlikely that a small employer or school has blocked all the short URLs that point to a site. You'll often enjoy some success in bypassing school-blocked sites if you try to use them. You can find the IP address of a site by opening Command Prompt as an admin, then typing tracert followed by the domain name; for example, tracert bbc.com. 5. Use Tor When you use the Tor network to browse the web, your traffic is taken on a long journey through thousands of nodes all around the world. This process makes it almost impossible for a regular website to know where the request originated, so it's unlikely to get caught in any blocking filters. Be aware that Tor and the dark web is not completely anonymous. Government authorities can, and do, monitor persons of interest on the network. Learn More About How to Get Past Blocked Sites Our preferred method for accessing blocked sites and bypassing internet restrictions on a regular basis is to use a VPN. If you would like to learn more about using VPNs (along with some of the other methods for getting round online blocks), you should learn more about how to bypass Wi-Fi and internet restrictions.

  4. Websites use cookies to personalize your browsing experience and serve you more relevant content. However, they can also be used to monitor your online activity and give you targeted ads. This raises serious privacy concerns. To address them, most modern browsers now provide private browsing windows to allow you to browse with less or no tracking. Furthermore, you can customize how your browser and websites use cookies either by blocking cookies completely or by adjusting your preferences. However, it can also cause site components to break, as well as prevent your browser from keeping you signed in to sites you visit often. The items you added to your shopping cart while online shopping will also not be saved, neither will you receive relevant ads that may in fact be helpful. Rather than disabling all cookies for all sites, you can set site cookie preferences to customize how your browsers use cookies and save data.
  5. Recording audio from a website on a Mac is tricky because there is usually no download option available. You can use your Mac's internal microphone and speakers, but they're prone to capturing the noise around you as well. Instead, we suggest you use a virtual audio driver along with a native audio recording app, like QuickTime Player. We'll show you how to record the audio from any browser on your Mac below. Set Up the BlackHole Audio Driver for Your Mac First Before we get into using the native apps to record audio from websites, you first need to install a virtual audio driver. Using a virtual audio driver, like BlackHole, allows you to capture the sound from internet browsers and other apps on your Mac. It creates a virtual link between the audio output heading to your speakers and your Mac's audio input. This allows you to route the audio from a browser directly into a recording app on your Mac. RELATED:How To Record System Audio On Any Platform Once you register on the BlackHole site, you'll get an email with a download link giving your two app option: a two-channel or a 16-channel version. Choose to install the two-channel package, since it'll be enough. Once you install it, you might have to restart your Mac. After rebooting your Mac, you'll be able to select the BlackHole audio driver as the sound input and output whenever you want to record audio from a website site. Here's how to go about it: Click the Apple icon in the top-left corner of the menu bar and select System Preferences. Click Sound. Click on the Output tab and select BlackHole from the list that appears. Lastly, click on the Input tab and choose BlackHole. Since this is a virtual audio driver, you don't have to worry about any external sound getting recorded. While the BlackHole audio driver usually works flawlessly, you should take note of these quirks: Every time you want to record audio, you have to select the BlackHole audio driver as the sound input and output. You won't get to hear any audio while recording it. Switching to the BlackHole audio driver is a hassle. To make it easier, create an Automator workflow or write an AppleScript and automate the process with a keyboard shortcut. After installing BlackHole, use either of these two apps to record audio from web browsers on your Mac 1. QuickTime Player As well as playing media files on your Mac, QuickTime Player can record audio, video, and even your Mac's screen. For recording audio, you get the basic options: a record button, a volume control, and a file size counter. To use QuickTime Player to record audio from websites, you need to select the BlackHole audio driver to route audio from input to your output first. Then follow these steps to use the QuickTime Player to capture audio from a website in any browser: Open QuickTime Player. Click File in the menu bar and select New Audio Recording. Press the Record button when you're ready to capture audio from a browser. Hit the Stop button when you're done. You can see a timer and file size counter for the recording in QuickTime Player. After you finish recording, you can preview it in QuickTime Player as well. If you want to trim the recording, go to Edit > Trim or press Cmd + T. Then drag the yellow handles on the trimming bar to highlight the portion you want to keep. QuickTime Player lets you record audio for as long as you want. And you can save the final clip on your Mac or on an external drive. 2. Voice Memos Voice Memos is the best native Mac app to record, play, and manage audio files in a single place. It's available for all Macs running macOS Mojave and later. Before you begin, select the Blackhole audio driver as your sound input and output, as shown above. Then follow these steps to use the Voice Memo app to record audio: Open Voice Memos. Press the Record button when you want the app to start recording the browser's audio. Hit the Done button when you want to stop recording. Once you record an audio clip, click on the recording to give it any name you want. Voice Memos app also lets you pause and resume the recording whenever you like. To edit the audio file, click on the Edit button in the top-right corner of the app's window to launch the editing options. This allows you to trim the beginning or end of the recording. You can also use the Enhance button in the top-right corner to suppress any background noise captured in the recording. The Voice Memos app puts no limit on the recording time and saves the recorded audio in the app. After that, you can share those recordings with any other apps. If you want to access and move the recorded files on your Mac, you need to launch Finder and press Shift + Cmd + G to open the Go to Folder window. Then type the following folder path: ~/Library/Application Support/com.apple.voicememos/Recordings Once the Finder opens the Recordings folder, you'll find your recordings arranged in date order. Easily Record Audio From Browsers on Your Mac Now you know how to record audio from websites using the QuickTime Player or the Voice Memos app on your Mac. You can test out both apps before recording any audio for real. Both apps let you record audio from browsers and edit them. The Enhance option in the Voice Memos app is useful for cleaning up background noise. Meanwhile, QuickTime Player gives you the flexibility to save your clips directly to an external drive. Since the edit feature in both the apps is pretty basic, you may want to check out the best audio editors for macOS to get more options.
  6. When you have autoplay enabled, videos and audio will automatically play as you browse. For instance, when scrolling through your Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter feeds, media will automatically play. By default, Firefox blocks all media with sound from playing automatically. While some hate autoplay, others may not. Thankfully, you can manage your media autoplay settings when using Firefox. In this article, you will learn about the different autoplay options in Firefox. You'll also find out how to enable or disable autoplay for all websites or on specific websites. What Autoplay Options Does Firefox Give You? Firefox gives you four options when it comes to adjusting your autoplay settings. Here's a rundown of each: Block audio: Firefox will prevent autoplay for all media with sound, just like Chrome mutes autoplay videos by default. Block audio and video: Firefox will prevent autoplay for all media, including video and audio. Block audio and video on mobile data only: When browsing on the Firefox app, Firefox will prevent media from autoplaying when you're not using Wi-Fi. Allow audio and video: Firefox will allow all media to play automatically. How to Block or Allow Autoplay in Firefox on Desktop Firefox blocks audio autoplay by default. However, if you want to block more than just audio, follow these steps: Open Firefox. Click on the hamburger menu to your top right. Scroll down and click on Options. For this example, we will be blocking autoplay on Facebook. Visit Facebook on your desktop computer. Click on the padlock to the left of the URL in the address bar. Click on the arrow icon (>). Click More Information. Inside the Page Info dialog box, click on Permissions. Scroll down to Autoplay and uncheck Use Default (all sites are set to Block Audio by default). Select your preferred setting and exit. In this example, we selected Block Audio and Video. This will be reflected in the Autoplay Settings dialog box. You should now see the Autoplay Blocked icon (represented by a "play" button with a cross through it) next to the HTTPS portion of the URL. This shows that Firefox is actively blocking media from autoplaying on Facebook. If you return to the Autoplay Settings dialog box, you should now be able to view the list of websites you added to your blocklist and their respective autoplay statuses as shown below. You can manage individual autoplay settings from here, or return to the Page Info dialog box to change your preferences. You can also take one (or more) website off of your list by selecting Remove Website or Remove All Websites. READ MORE: Mozilla Apps That Every Firefox Fan Should Check Out How to Change Autoplay Settings Directly on a Website Assuming you change your mind and now want to allow autoplay on Facebook, you can also adjust your autoplay settings when you're on Facebook. Here's how to do this: Go to the site you want to change the settings for. Click on the Autoplay Blocked icon. Click on the dropdown menu to the right of Autoplay to reveal other options. Select Allow Audio and Video, and then exit. Customize Your Autoplay Settings in Firefox Now that you can manage your autoplay settings in Firefox, you will be able to choose whether your favorite websites autoplay media. It can also help you prevent autoplay ads from playing automatically when you load a website. This can help reduce your data consumption, as well as increase overall page load speed.
  7. Microsoft’s all-new Edge browser has managed to give Microsoft an "edge" among other Chromium-based browsers. If downloading Chrome or Firefox is the first thing you do on your new computer, we’re going to give you a few reasons why you might just want to stick with Microsoft Edge. The latest update brings a slew of features, some of which you may have never realized were there. These features can enrich your browsing in many ways. Let’s walk through Microsoft Edge’s top hidden features. Get the Latest Update Before we talk about the features, let’s ensure you’re running the latest version. If you’re on Windows 10, you’ll be automatically upgraded to the Chromium-based Edge. If you’re still running the legacy version, you’ll need to download the new Edge from the Microsoft website. To check if you’re running the latest version of Edge, move your cursor over to the top-right corner on your Edge browser and click on the ellipsis icon. From the dropdown menu, select Help and Feedback > About Microsoft Edge. 1. Sidebar Search Mac users love Safari’s Search with Google option, and so they should; it’s a handy feature. This eliminates the hassle of having to paste the copied text into a new tab and helps perform a quick search. Edge came up with an even more brilliant feature by introducing a sidebar that allows a quick search without having to open a new tab. By default, Edge will perform the search on Bing. To give this feature a go, select text on a webpage and right-click on it. Select Search Bing in sidebar for… or you could also use the keyboard shortcut to perform a sidebar search by pressing Ctrl + Shift + E. You can also learn more handy keyboard shortcuts for Edge. 2. Install Websites as Apps This Microsoft Edge feature makes it simple to manage frequently used websites by installing them as apps. You may choose to pin the website to your Start Menu or desktop. To install a website as an app, start by navigating to the website. Click the ellipsis icon at the top-left of your browser and select Settings > Apps > Install this site as an app. Save this app with your preferred name and this will open a new window for that website. For managing the websites you’ve installed as an app, navigate to Settings > Apps > Manage Apps. Here, you can uninstall the app, pin it to your Start Menu or Desktop, or view site permissions. 3. Built-In Coupon and Promo Codes Microsoft Edge now comes with a feature that will alert you if it has a coupon or promo for the shopping website you’re browsing. An alert that reads “This site has coupons!” will slide in from the right of the address bar, and you’ll also see a blue price tag icon. To use a code, click on the price tag icon, bring your pointer over a code and click Copy code. Edge will also help you find the best deal so you can maximize your savings and suggest a coupon code accordingly. 4. Web Capture The Web Capture tool replaces the Web Notes tool and improves on it. With Web Capture, you can not only capture the visible portion of the webpage, but you can scroll further down the page to include as much content from the webpage as you want. To capture contents from a webpage, go to “…” > Web Capture, or use the shortcut Ctrl + Shift + S. Once you’ve captured the content, you’ll have an option to Copy or Add Notes. This will open a dialog box where you can draw on the capture, share, copy, or save it on your computer. If you want to easily access the Web Capture tool, right-click on it in the “…” menu and select Show in Toolbar. 5. Pin Tabs to Edge and Pin Websites to Taskbar If you need to keep one or more websites permanently open while you’re browsing the web, Edge allows you to pin them. To pin a tab, right-click on the tab and select Pin tab. The pinned tabs will now appear at the left of all the other open tabs. Pinned tabs are smaller, so they’ll also save you some real estate allowing you to keep more tabs open at a time. You may also have a few go-to websites that you open as soon as you launch your browser. You can reduce a step in this process by pinning the websites to the taskbar. To do this, go to the website you want to pin and click on the ellipsis icon. Next, select More Tools > Pin to taskbar. A dialog box will appear where you’ll see the website’s name, which you may change based on your preference. When you’re done, click Pin. 6. Put Tabs to Sleep After introducing vertical tabs, Edge has added one more tab-related feature. Regardless of whether you’re browsing for work or personal purposes, you’ll need to open multiple tabs so you can quickly switch among them as needed. This can, however, hog a good portion of your memory and processor. To remedy this, Microsoft Edge allows you to put tabs to sleep. This frees up your computer’s resources, makes it run faster, and reduces battery consumption. Microsoft illustrates the benefits of putting tabs to sleep and claims that it mitigates memory usage by 32% on average and uses 37% less CPU on average. To put tabs to sleep, click on the ellipsis icon at the top-right of your browser and go to Settings > System. Under the head Save resources, make sure the slider next to Save resources with sleeping tabs is turned on. Below you’ll see an option to choose the duration of inactivity after which you’d like Edge to put tabs to sleep. The final option in the Save resources section allows you to add exceptions for websites that you’d never like to be put to sleep. When you want to awaken a tab, just click on it and it will revert to its normal status. 7. Choose a Non-ISP DNS Provider Edge defaults to using the DNS provider that your ISP has set up. If you’re looking for improved privacy and security, you may want to switch to a different DNS provider like Cloudflare or OpenDNS. RELATED:How To Prevent Microsoft Edge From Spying On Your Webcam And Microphone To choose a different DNS provider, go to “…” > Settings > Privacy, Search, and Services. Look for the section for Security and ensure that the Use secure DNS to specify how to lookup the network address for websites slider is turned on. Under this section, you have two options. 8. Tab Groups from Google Chrome are changing the way you organize and use the browser. The new feature can help you find your tabs easily and only takes seconds to set up. Here is how you can create and use tab groups for a more efficient browsing experience. What Are Tab Groups? Instead of having a large number of individual tabs open in your browser, Tab Groups in Google Chrome allows you to organize them into groups. Tab Groups function how bookmarks work when creating folders for the different websites you visit. You can group different tabs you don't want to close together with a specific label. Beta users have been labeling groups in several different ways. The first is to label them by the project. For example, if you are seeking out a new rug, you can group everything associated with your search into one group. The other way is to label your groups by urgency like "ASAP" or "Today." It's almost like a different kind of to-do list, but for your browser tabs. This will cut down the amount of time it takes to sort through all of your tabs for the right website. It can also help you identify which tabs are causing your computer to slow down. You can even close out several tabs at once or recover your tabs if Chrome accidentally deleted a group. Grouping your tabs will organize your entire browsing experience. It will only take you a few minutes to get used to the new setup. How to Use Tab Groups in Google Chrome You can set up as many groups as you want but just be careful you aren't falling into the same disorganized trap as your tabs. Right-click on the tab. Select Add tab to group. Select New Group. Name the group. Once you add a new group, you'll see a colored line that underlines all the tabs belonging to this group. To get the most out of your grouped tabs, learn how to easily add or delete new tabs, change colors, recover old tabs, and more. Managing Tab Groups in Google Chrome Once you've created your group, only the tab you originally selected will be underlined with the color for the group. To add a new tab to the group, click and drag your new tab towards the group name till the tab becomes outlined by the color. If the tab is being displayed in your browser, it will be outlined by the group color. Otherwise, the tab will only be underlined. To remove a tab from the group, click and drag the tab further away from the group name till the color is no longer attached. You could also right-click the tab > Remove from group. Note that you cannot click a tab away from the group if there is already an open tab visible on the group. Right-clicking your group name will pull up a list of options to edit your group's name, change the color, ungroup all tabs, close the entire group, or move the group to a new window. You can't recover an entire group if it has been closed, but you can access the old tabs that were closed the same way you would recover a lost site on Chrome. Go to History > Recently Closed. RELATED:Custom Google Chrome Profiles You Should Start Using Maximizing and Minimizing Tab Groups What makes tab groups so powerful in Google Chrome is the ability to minimize your tab groups all at once. You can only do this if there is an open tab that is not grouped together with the others. Click on the group name, and all of your current tabs will condense into the group, showing only the name. Click the group name again to maximize your tabs. You can also click and drag the group name to move all of the associated tabs into a new window. Before the update, you would have had to move all the tabs individually. A New Way to Browse Google Chrome's tab groups allow you to collect similar tabs into one group, so you can navigate and find the tabs you need more easily. Although Chrome's new feature is great, it's not the only way to manage all your tabs. You can also use other approaches that provide similar functions.
  9. Firefox introduced a multiple Picture-in-Picture mode in version 86 of the browser. Thanks to this little feature, you can open multiple videos and play them simultaneously. This article explains how to use multiple picture-in-picture mode in Firefox and its uses. How to Start Multiple Videos in Picture-in-Picture Mode The Picture-in-Picture mode isn’t obvious at first. It is represented by a tiny icon that appears as an overlay on top of any video playing within a Firefox tab. Here’s how to activate it: Open any website with a video in the Firefox web browser. Play the video. Move the mouse over the video to display the Picture-in-Picture icon on the video. Tap on the icon to activate the Picture-in-Picture mode. The video moves to the side of the webpage. To open multiple videos, repeat the above steps on the same website or open another site on a new tab. Firefox plays the new video on top of the first one. Drag and drop it to any location to view both. The videos play simultaneously on the screen. The main Firefox window shows a "playing" icon for all tabs with open videos. Even if you minimize Firefox, the multiple videos will continue to play on top of any other program or the desktop. You can use the other video controls as usual to manage their playback. Click the tiny Picture-in-Picture icon (with the inward arrow) to close the Picture-in-Picture mode for a specific video. Multiple picture-in-picture mode is available on Firefox for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Disable Picture-in-Picture in Firefox Firefox enables Picture-in-Picture (and by its nature, multiple picture-in-picture as well) by default. There is no reason to disable Picture-in-Picture, but you can do it from settings. Open the Firefox menu by selecting the three horizontal bars on the top-right. Go to Options and scroll down to the Browsing Uncheck Enable picture-in-picture video controls. The single screen Picture-in-Picture mode is useful on its own. A multiple Picture-in-Picture mode is a wonderful option for multitaskers. Try it when you want to keep an eye on news from different sources or lean back for live gameplay streams. Add it to the methods you already use to improve your browsing with Firefox.
  10. Internet provider RCN accused the RIAA and Rightscorp of sending "fraudulent" piracy notices based on flimsy evidence. The anti-piracy outfits recently asked the court to dismiss the allegations, arguing that these are fatally flawed. This includes the finding that Rightscorp operates without a private investigator's license. Under US copyright law, Internet providers must terminate the accounts of repeat infringers “in appropriate circumstances.” In the past such drastic action was rare but, backed by several court orders, ISPs are increasingly being held to this standard. Music Companies sued RCN Internet provider RCN is also under legal pressure. Two years ago, the company was sued by several major music industry companies including Arista Records, Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music, and Warner Records. The music companies alleged that RCN wasn’t doing enough to stop subscribers from pirating on its network. Instead of terminating accounts of persistent pirates, the Internet provider looked away, they argued. The stakes of these liability lawsuits are high. Internet providers face hundreds of millions of dollars in damages claims, while tens of thousands of Internet subscribers are at risk of having their accounts terminated. “False and Fraudulent Notices” To avoid trouble, several ISPs have launched counterattacks in court. This includes RCN, which accused the RIAA and its anti-piracy partner of sending ‘false and fraudulent’ DMCA notices. These notices shouldn’t serve as evidence for disconnections. This countersuit initially failed. A New Jersey federal concluded that RCN failed to show that it was financially hurt as a direct result of any incorrect notices. However, the court left the door open for more detailed allegations. Amended Countersuit A month later, the ISP filed updated complaints against the RIAA and Rightscorp. As requested, these included more details on how the alleged false and fraudulent notices required the company to make additional costs. For example, RCN mentioned that it has to hire outside attorneys to analyze Rightscorp’s complaints. This includes Rightscorp’s refusal to add a digital signature to its DMCA notices. In addition, the ISP argued that it had to spend extra resources on modifying and maintaining its DMCA takedown system, so it could handle Rightscorp’s “non-compliant” piracy notices. To state a proper claim under the California Unfair Competition Law (UCL), there has to be some form of injury that can be directly linked to the alleged fraud. While the updated allegations are indeed more detailed, both the RIAA and Rightscorp believe that they’re still lacking. RIAA Denies Involvement In a new filing to the court, RIAA stresses that the new claims still fail to show any direct and substantial injury. In addition, the organization notes that, even if that was the case, it’s not responsible. The contested notices were sent by Rightscorp who acted on behalf of record labels, not the RIAA. ‘[I]t is beyond dispute that Rightscorp never sent infringement notices on behalf of Movants. Indeed, RCN concedes that Movants have never hired Rightscorp to monitor BitTorrent or send notices on their behalf. “Thus, Movants did not personally participate in Rightscorp’s practices and plainly lacked unbridled control over them as a matter of law,” the RIAA adds. Rightscorp Says RCN is Responsible for Extra Costs Rightscorp can’t possibly deny its involvement but the anti-piracy group also asks the court to dismiss the allegations. Among other things, the company argues that RCN fails to show that it made extra costs that are directly related to the contested notices. While RCN may have hired an attorney to review Rightscorp’s notices, that wouldn’t be any different than analyzing copyright infringement complaints from other parties, Rightscorp argues. Also, any extra costs that were made in relation to Rightscorp’s refusal to digitally sign its piracy notices are RCN’s own responsibility, since the ISP itself came up with this requirement. “[T]his purported injury is the result of RCN’s decision to impose its own formatting requirement, which is not required or even suggested by the DMCA,” Rightscorp writes. No Private Investigator’s License RCN also alleged that Rightscorp doesn’t have a private investigator’s license, even though it acts like one. Tracking alleged pirates without a license violates California and New Jersey law, the Internet provider said. In its motion to dismiss Rightscorp admits that it operates without a license. However, the company doesn’t believe it needs one and it characterizes RCN’s claim as a “pretextual jab.” Even if a license would be required, Rightscorp fails to see how this caused financial damage to RCN. “Assuming for the sake of argument that Rightscorp needed a private investigator license, RCN’s amended countercomplaint has failed to allege an economic injury caused by Rightscorp’s declination to obtain one,” Rightscorp counter. The above is just a small selection of the arguments and claims made by all parties. After all sides were heard, it is now up to the court to determine whether RCN’s amended complaint can move forward or will be dismissed.
  11. YouTube-ripping service Yout.com sued the RIAA in 2020, hoping to have its platform declared legal. As time went on the case became more complex. As a result, it was dismissed last month to allow Yout time to revise its arguments. Yout has now done just that via a focused amended complaint, providing precise detail on why the court should rule in its favor. In 2020, the RIAA attempted to have YouTube-ripping tool youtube-dl removed from Github and in the wake of that, YouTube-ripping service Yout filed a preemptive lawsuit against the RIAA. Yout said that the RIAA’s earlier efforts to have its homepage delisted by Google, on the basis that Yout circumvented YouTube’s ‘rolling cipher’ technology, were wrongful and damaging to its business. Yout asked the court to declare its service legal on the basis that, contrary to the RIAA’s allegations, its software platform is not designed to “descramble, decrypt, avoid, bypass, remove, deactivate, or impair” YouTube’s so-called ‘rolling cipher technology’. Over time the case became increasingly complex, with the RIAA seeking to have the lawsuit dismissed, Yout fighting back, and the RIAA countering. As a result, last month the presiding judge took the decision to dismiss the case without prejudice after both Yout and the RIAA brought up additional facts about how YouTube works. This gave Yout the opportunity to go back to the drawing board to file its second amended complaint. it has now done just that. Second Amended Complaint Yout’s new filing still seeks declaratory relief relating to 17 U.S.C. § 1201 – the anti-circumvention provisions of the DMCA. It also claims that the RIAA made misrepresentations that Yout is infringing under U.S.C. § 512(f) resulting in business disparagement and defamation. In many other respects the claims against the RIAA remain unchanged but, what stands out in particular, is the characterization of the Yout service, the explanation of how it operates, and the nature of YouTube’s ‘rolling cipher’. “This lawsuit involves Internet content that can be accessed using a web browser (‘Web Content’) using a unique hyperlink, uniform resource locator (commonly referred to as ‘url’), or ‘web address’ that directs computing devices to such content, respectively, on the Internet,” the second amended complaint (SAC) reads. “Some Web Content exists behind a pay-wall such that a person can only access the content after paying for the specific content or a broader subscription (eg iTunes). This lawsuit does not involve Web Content behind a pay-wall. Rather, this lawsuit involves content publicly accessible to anyone with a web browser and Internet connection.” The SAC attempts to draw a line in the sand between services that are designed to grant access to content protected and/or encrypted to prevent unauthorized access and those that simply enable access to content that is already available to anyone. “[T]his lawsuit does not involve any Web Content that has been hidden from view by use of a cipher or other means of concealing content or meaning. Again, quite simply, this lawsuit involves Web Content publicly accessible by anyone with an Internet connection and a web browser,” it notes. In keeping with the original complaint, Yout characterizes itself as a time-shifting service, in that it allows users to access content from YouTube, make a copy of that content on their local machines, and then access that content at a time and place of their choosing, without needing an Internet connection. Content owned by Yout’s law firm is used as an example. Yout then moves on to the heart of the complaint – the RIAA’s allegations that Yout decrypts, descrambles or otherwise circumvents protections put in place by YouTube. “YouTube Does Not Implement DRM Mechanisms” According to the SAC, YouTube does not implement Digital Rights Management (DRM) mechanisms used on protected media such as DVDs, for example. Instead, YouTube content plays on any HTTP user agent with a JavaScript interpreter, not simply on players that are specifically authorized to access the platform. Yout says that when YouTube plays content, it merely checks that the accessing browser has a JavaScript interpreter, such as those deployed by Yout, youtube-dl, and other tools that have no relationship with YouTube or the record labels. “By way of comparison, a DVD player has a secret key embedded in it that must be obtained from the rightsholders pursuant to a license, but a browser does not. YouTube doesn’t license browsers to play YouTube. Therefore, even if the YouTube player source code is ‘a process or a treatment,’ it doesn’t require ‘the authority of the copyright owner’ as required by the statute because it’s already been provided to everyone in the world,” the SAC notes. From here, Yout explains in detail how anyone with a web browser such as Chrome can download audio files from YouTube. In summary, Yout says that all it does is automate these steps, making life easier for the regular user who may want to download and store content for time-shifted consumption. YouTube’s ‘Rolling Cipher’ Referencing the DMCA anti-circumvention notices sent by the RIAA in order to have Yout delisted from Google search, the ripping service says that if protection measures are put in place, it cannot help users download that content. “Contrary to [RIAA’s] allegations, Yout’s software platform is not designed to descramble, decrypt, avoid, bypass, remove, deactivate, or impair any technical protection measure or any technological measure that effectively controls access to a work protected by the Copyright Act. In fact, any digital mechanism in place designed as anti-circumvention technology stops Yout users from recording and saving that protected work, thereby demonstrating Yout’s compliance with any anti-circumvention protections in place,” Yout notes. “Yout does not violate Section 1201 of the DMCA because it does not circumvent any technological measure on YouTube videos. Similarly, the ‘rolling cipher’ mechanism that the RIAA argues is employed by YouTube does not prevent copying of videos or other digital media. The term ‘rolling cipher’ is a misnomer and a term likely coined and relied upon by Defendants to argue that services like Yout are somehow breaching a protection that doesn’t exist.” Yout also suggests that in respect of YouTube, ‘rolling cipher’ is a term being promoted by the RIAA but in practice, it’s not a DRM or technological measure that effectively controls access to a work protected by the Copyright Act. Alleged Damage to Yout’s Reputation Yout says that prior to the RIAA’s campaign to have YouTube-ripping platforms delisted from Google using the anti-circumvention provisions of the DMCA, public perception was that these services were legal. Thanks to the RIAA, however, third parties now believe that Yout is an illegal platform. The ripping service raises the analogy of a VHS tape that can be used to record MTV or an educational broadcast from PBS, noting that the technology used by Yout does not in itself constitute a violation of the DMCA. In summary, Yout wants its platform declared legal by the court, specifically under the anti-circumvention provisions of the DMCA. Yout also wants the court to hold the RIAA liable for knowingly misrepresenting infringement in its DMCA notices to Google and seeks compensation for the RIAA’s allegedly false statements relating to the Yout platform and the nature of its business.
  12. Laos has authorized a series of cryptocurrency mining and trading projects in the country, looking for another source of income to supplement the losses caused by the drop in tourism due to COVID-19 related measures. Six companies have been authorized to start cryptocurrency trading and mining operations in the country, according to the office of the prime minister. Laos Embraces Digital Currencies Laos has authorized mining and trading operations in its territory, contradicting policies from its central bank that issued warnings against crypto just a month before. The move comes as the small Asian nation tries to find alternative income sources to deal with the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic. The office of the prime minister stated that six companies were now authorized to conduct cryptocurrency-related activities in the country. Now, according to reports, the government will start work to regulate these activities. Laos could also be trying to attract some of the miners ousted from China, by being a close substitute that can also offer plenty of cheap, hydroelectric power currently not being used at its full potential. Green Mining Potential and Money Laundering Concerns The origin of this clean energy could also be a big attraction now that people are more aware of the mining industry’s heavy energy consumption. This push for green energy and renewables for mining was, in part, introduced by Elon Musk, who commented that the Bitcoin network energy consumption was “insane,” and suspended bitcoin payments for cars at Tesla. This might be a lifesaver for Laos, as its own energy consumption is orders of magnitudes lower than what the country produces, making it easy to introduce a mining industry without disrupting the national electrical grid. However, regulators have concerns. Laos sits in an area that is very famous for the volume of narcotics produced there. Many are worried that the rise in these industries might translate to cryptocurrencies being used for money laundering purposes. Zachary Abuza, a professor at the National War College in Washington, declared to news outlet FT that: You should always be concerned when countries with poor regulatory records start to get involved in things like cryptocurrency. To say that the Laotian financial system is immature would be a brutal understatement, and we have to be concerned if they are rushing into this.
  13. Binance, the leading cryptocurrency exchange, has announced it is preparing changes to be able to work with regulators more closely. Its CEO, Changpeng Zhao, stated the company is ready to apply the needed revisions to transform the exchange into a regulated financial institution in the future. This is Binance’s answer to a series of regulatory issues it has been facing with regulators from all over the world. Binance Readies Regulator-Friendly Changes Binance, the world’s biggest cryptocurrency exchange by trade volume, has announced it is preparing changes to better fit the requirements of regulators. The statements were made by Binance’s CEO, Changpeng Zhao, in an interview with the South China Morning Post published on September 16, where he hinted at a change in how the institution will treat regulatory matters. He stated: As we run a centralized exchange, we have come to realize that we need to have a centralized entity to work well with regulators. This is a clear departure from the policy that Binance had applied before, stating it wasn’t headquartered anywhere in the world because Bitcoin wasn’t either. However, it was this same policy that created problems for Binance with regulators, that have complained about the lack of registration for operation in several countries. Undoing the Damage From the interview, it’s clear the recent regulatory problems the exchange has been facing have completely changed Zhao’s vision about how things must be done for compliance purposes. He seemed to toss away his previous beliefs, stating: We need to have clear records of stakeholders’ ownership, transparency, and risk controls. As the largest player in the industry, we need to prepare ourselves for the shift. We are making changes to make it easier to work with regulators. This pivot towards compliance is not just empty talk, either. Binance has been actively hiring human resources to step up its compliance game and tighten control over the funds exchanged on its platform. Just yesterday, Binance announced the hiring of Nils Andersen-Röed, a former Europol Dark Web specialist, to further strengthen their investigations and audits team. Also, last month, Greg Monahan, who was a U.S. Treasury criminal investigator, was appointed as Binance’s Global Money Laundering Reporting Officer, to improve AML policies inside of the exchange.
  14. According to reports stemming from the Salvadoran Court of Accounts, the regulatory body is planning to investigate the government’s bitcoin automated teller machine (ATM) purchases and Chivo kiosk construction. The investigation follows the recent protest in El Salvador against the adoption of bitcoin as the crowd set fire to a bitcoin ATM. Human Rights Group Cristosal Files Complaint Against Nayib Bukele’s Regime On September 15, a large group of protestors took to the streets in San Salvador to protest the new bitcoin law implemented by Salvadoran president Nayib Bukele. It’s not the first time protests against the law have happened, but this time around a bitcoin ATM was set ablaze. Following the protest, El Salvador’s Court of Accounts is looking into a complaint about the Bukele regime’s bitcoin ATM buys and kiosk construction. A document was witnessed by Reuters staff and the complaint was filed by a human rights and transparency organization called Cristosal. The complaint Cristosal filed with the Salvadoran Court of Accounts is against six Board of Directors members of the Bitcóin Trust. Furthermore, the complaint is also against the Salvadoran secretariat of Commerce and Investments and members of the Finance and Economy ministries. The Human Rights Foundation’s (HRF) chief strategy officer Alex Gladstein discusses the pros and cons tied to the new bitcoin legal tender law. The HRF representative Gladstein’s entire Twitter thread on the subject can be read here. The Court of Accounts (CoA) says the complaint was received on September 10, five days before the protest and torched ATM. The CoA can impose sanctions against Salvadoran government officials. Salvadoran president Nayib Bukele has been called a dictator and has been investigated before. Cristosal Says CoA Complaint Has Been Accepted For instance, in May Bukele’s New Ideas Party fired several Supreme Court members and the attorney general. Twenty government institutions linked to the Bukele administration were under investigation for manipulation and corruption. He then fired all those who were involved in the investigation. The news publication El Faro also accused Bukele of secretly negotiating a deal with Mara Salvatrucha, the most powerful gang in El Salvador. The latest investigation stemming from the CoA and Cristosal notes that an analysis of the bitcoin situation will take place. Salvadoran president Nayib Bukele is considered a “dictator” and has been referred to in that way by many global leaders and news outlets. Bukele has been accused of being friendly with the largest Salvadoran gang Mara Salvatrucha and members of Bukele’s family were recently accused of planning to launch a stablecoin. “Having admitted the complaint, it will proceed to carry out the legal analysis report and, in a timely manner, forward such report to the General Audit Coordination,” the CoA document reviewed by Reuters notes. The news outlet detailed that an unnamed source from Cristosal says that the complaint written to the CoA “has been accepted.” Moreover, the CoA has the power to start criminal proceedings if the investigation into the bitcoin ATM purchases and kiosk construction uncovers suspicious elements.
