  1. In its Resident Evil Village showcase today, Capcom dropped the news that Mercenaries, the series' long-running arcadey action mode, is coming back. Mercenaries was especially popular in RE5 and RE6 thanks to co-op multiplayer support, but it wasn't included in Resident Evil 7 or the remakes of Resident Evil 2 or Resident Evil 3. "It's back, with a few Resident Evil Village twists," said director Morimasa Sato. There's now a shop, The Duke's Emporium, which you can access "between areas" to purchase and upgrade weapons. The Emporium has three menus: Supplies, Gunsmithy, and The Duke's Purse, which looks like where you'll go to sell things to get the funds for the other two. The Gunsmithy's upgrade system looks very much like the weapon upgrading introduced in RE4. Like in previous Mercenaries modes, Village's looks fast-paced. You have a time limit to kill a certain number of enemies, but combo-ing kills will grant you both bonus point and bonus time. The big difference this time is that, like the rest of Village, you'll be playing in first-person. Mercenaries mode now has a simple ability system to buff certain attributes, like pistol damage or movement speed or resistance to enemy hits. The one thing the demo didn't show was whether or not Mercenaries will support multiplayer. More on that when we know it.
  2. The first-person outing will be fully revealed next week. Resident Evil 4 VR will release for Oculus Quest 2 at some point in the future, Capcom and Oculus confirmed today. The port was announced during the Resident Evil Showcase, and while specific details are thin on the ground, we’re promised more at next week’s Oculus Gaming Showcase. A few things you can glean from the footage above: it’s played from a first-person perspective. It’s a collaboration between Capcom, Oculus Studios and Armature—the latter specialises in ports and have worked on the Bayonetta and Vanquish remasters, among others, and helped develop ReCore. It’s not the first time Resident Evil has gone VR: Resident Evil 7 had PSVR support but, annoyingly, that never came to PC. It’s unclear whether Resident Evil 4 VR will be an Oculus Quest 2 exclusive, but given how much noise Facebook is making about it, you can probably bet on it. The announcement accompanies a handful of other Resident Evil reveals, including the return of Mercenaries mode in Resident Evil Village, and the arrival of a demo on May 2.
  3. It features a multiplayer career mode, and will get free post-launch circuits. To nobody’s surprise, following last year’s excellent instalment, F1 2021 is happening. This year’s sim will be the first published by Electronic Arts, after its $1.2 billion acquisition of Codemasters last year. It’ll hit Steam on July 16. As always, F1 2021 will feature “the teams, drivers and circuits for the 2021 FIA Formula One World Championship,” but also expect a new story mode and some post-launch track additions in the form of Portimão, Imola, and Jeddah—all of which will come free. The Career mode will get new features too, including multiplayer support for two players and ‘Real-Season Start’, which lets you jump into a season at any point with “real-time driver and constructor standings.” As for the new ‘Braking Point’ story mode, it’s a rags-to-riches ascent from F2 obscurity to F1 fame, if you’re in the mood for some racing career escapism. The game is available to pre-order now on Steam, with a bunch of perks if you buy the Deluxe Edition. Codemasters has been pushing out some very good F1 games over the last handful of years, with 2020 being a particular standout. “The deep career mode is even better when managing your own team, and the racing is superbly tactical,” wrote Justin Towell in his review.

  12. Josh Grode, the CEO of Legendary Entertainment, says that the production company has more ideas for future films in the MonsterVerse. Josh Grode, the CEO of Legendary Entertainment, said that the production company has more ideas for future MonsterVerse films. The MonsterVerse is a cinematic universe that aims to crossover iconic giant movie monsters like Godzilla, Mothra, and King Kong. The universe got its start with 2014's Godzilla, the first American film to feature the king of the monsters since the controversial 1998 Godzilla film. Godzilla was followed up by three films: Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and the recently released Godzilla vs. Kong. Before the release of Godzilla vs. Kong, the future of the MonsterVerse was in question. Godzilla: King of the Monsters received a mixed critic and fan reception, and it fell below box office projections. Other than Godzilla vs. Kong, Legendary's only confirmed future MonsterVerse project was the anime-inspired Skull Island Netflix series. However, Godzilla vs. Kong ended up being a surprise hit, gaining higher praise from critics than its predecessors and having the highest domestic box office opening weekend since the COVID-19 pandemic started. Godzilla vs. Kong even managed to beat Godzilla: King of the Monsters' domestic opening weekend. In a report from Deadline, Grode confirmed that Legendary Entertainment is exploring future ideas set in the MonsterVerse. Grode spoke about the surprise box office success of Godzilla vs. Kong, which continues to perform spectacularly in theaters. Grode reassured MonsterVerse fans that there would likely be future installments in the cinematic universe, stating "we have a number of ideas for more movies." Godzilla vs. Kong's surprise success came despite two big hurdles: the COVID-19 pandemic and the film's simultaneous HBO Max release. But, the film seems to be winning against all odds, outperforming other blockbuster theatrical releases like Tenet and Wonder Woman: 1984. On the HBO Max side of things, Godzilla vs. Kong also managed to beat Zack Snyder's highly anticipated director's cut of Justice League, setting a new viewership record for the streaming platform. While Godzilla vs. Kong's box office success is good for the future of theatrical cinema in general, it has also generated a renewed interest for the MonsterVerse. Seeing how Toho, the Japanese company that created Godzilla, has only made one new live-action film in the franchise in over a decade, the MonsterVerse has basically been Kaiju fans' only way to get their live-action Godzilla fix. The future of the cinematic universe is looking better than ever, and Legendary has barely scratched the surface when it comes to featuring the full roaster of monsters Godzilla has faced over the years. Hopefully, we get to see the future of the MonsterVerse sooner rather than later.
  13. While we were reading up on Nvidia's Grace CPU and datacentre DGUs yesterday, Nvidia was hosting an investor day for its shareholders. During which the company's top brass spoke a little on the current GPU shortage—the bane of many PC builders' lives at current—and how long the company thinks this may go on for. Sadly it's not looking up for the entirety of 2021, as Nvidia revises its outlook once again. "Overall demand remains very strong and continues to exceed supply while our channel inventories remain quite lean," says Colette Kress, CFO of Nvidia in a blog post. "We expect demand to continue to exceed supply for much of this year. We believe we will have sufficient supply to support sequential growth beyond Q1." Kress had previously relayed a message of a lean channel inventory lasting throughout Q1, which by Nvidia's corporate calendar would have left us waiting around until May. Well, May isn't that far off now and a return to normalcy appears to be even less likely over the course of the coming months. Yet according to Nvidia's own figures from its Investors Day slides, Ampere's launch has been very successful. Nvidia reports that Ampere has more than doubled Turing's first six months across Steam, and has continued a strong ramp up in sales for the generation's first 18 weeks. That's perhaps not all that surprising, considering Nvidia is selling out of cards as quick as it can make them, but it does highlight how increasingly huge demand has become for GPUs in 2021. Demand not only from gamers but cryptocurrency miners and those looking to profit from the lack of availability by selling cards for profit, too. Acer recently spoke of component shortages easing up by the second half of 2021, which could signal a return to a stronger supply chain, following constraints in global supply largely due to the coronavirus. AMD is also struggling to meet demand for its new RDNA 2-based RX 6000-series GPUs, and has so far kept relatively quiet on when it believes supply will return. If Nvidia can at least maintain a steady supply throughout the year, then perhaps demand will naturally dip as the year progresses, in turn making it that little bit easier to pick up a graphics card without long waits or furious refreshing. That's my hopeful outlook, anyways, as clearly the official guidance is anything but optimistic.
  14. Ray Fisher is still hopeful his character Cyborg will appear in The Flash, saying it would be a "bummer" if they couldn't find a way to make it work. Despite his ongoing feud with Warner Bros., Ray Fisher is still hopeful his DCEU character Cyborg will appear in The Flash. Recent months have seen Fisher, who has appeared in both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League as Cyborg, engage in a public battle with Warner Bros. over what went down on the set of Justice League's reshoots. Fisher has alleged reshoots director Joss Whedon acted unprofessionally and abusively, and that he was enabled by those within DC Films like Geoff Johns and Jon Berg. This led to an internal investigation, though the "remedial action" taken afterward has yet to satisfy Fisher. There were once plans for Fisher's Cyborg to appear in future DCEU films, but right now things are very much uncertain. Aside from a solo Cyborg film, the character was slated to appear in the long-awaited Flash movie starring Ezra Miller. Fisher was certainly interested in an appearance, but his battle with Warner Bros. seemingly put an end to it. In January, it was reported Cyborg had been written out of The Flash, something Fisher himself then confirmed. Nevertheless, the actor is still holding out some hope for a resolution for The Flash. While talking to Empire, Fisher spoke of Flash director Andy Muschietti and the conversations they once had about the film. It was then that Fisher shared his hopes that things can work out. "Andy seems to have his head on straight and understood these characters by making it about the relationship more than just a display of superpowers," Fisher said. "We were on the same page about that, and it’ll be a bummer if there is no way to resolve the issue." Fisher previously stated there hasn't been a draft of The Flash that did not include Cyborg in some capacity. If that remains the case, then the film will need to do some major restructuring to erase Fisher's role. It would be a shame to lose out on having Cyborg suit up once more alongside the Flash, especially since he's hardly gotten his time to shine in the DCEU. Fisher's optimism will certainly give fans some hope. At the same time, there are numerous obstacles standing in his way. For one thing, Fisher has repeatedly stated he will not star in a film produced by current DC Films president Walter Hamada. For another, The Flash is set to begin filming fairly soon, so if the matter hasn't been resolved yet, it seems unlikely that it ever will be. As Fisher put it, it would be a bummer if this couldn't be worked out, but his fight with Warner Bros. as reached new heights in recent weeks. Fisher is determined to see accountability in the entertainment industry, which is a noble goal. Hopefully, it won't prevent him from appearing in The Flash, but for now, Cyborg remains separate from the 2022 film.
  15. Activision is targeting repeat offenders that create new accounts after a ban. Activision is continuing its campaign against Call of Duty: Warzone cheaters. In an anti-cheat progress report published today, the publisher announced that over 475,000 Warzone accounts have been permanently banned since the game's release in March 2020. That's an average of around 36,500 bans per month, or about 1,200 bans every day. Just yesterday, Raven Software completed another ban wave penalizing 30,000 Warzone more accounts. Activision says this was the "seventh high-volume set of bans" (which have ranged from 15,000, 30,000, and 60,000) issued since February. For reference, Warzone reached over 80 million total players across all platforms in October 2020. The progress report also clarifies that, in addition to daily individual bans and future waves, Activision is setting its sights on repeat offenders—those who get banned for cheating and quickly return to the game with a new account. Over 45,000 "fraudulent, black market accounts used by repeat offenders" were recently banned, though it's not clear if this number is included in the latest ban waves or part of a separate effort. "Removing cheaters and taking away their ability to move to alternate accounts is a key focus for the security teams." To keep habitual cheaters out of Warzone for good, Activision issues a hardware ban that targets the unique IDs associated with your PC's components. Hardware bans are harder to work around than a simple IP or account sanction, but according to one cheat distributor, the most popular cheating programs can bypass this hurdle by automatically spoofing your machine's hardware ID while the software is running. This makes it all the more important for Activision to go after the cheat developers and distributors in addition to players. Back in August 2020, the publisher successfully shut down one cheats site after threatening a lawsuit, though players looking for Warzone cheats and hacks don't have to look far. Short of a major crackdown on distribution or a comprehensive detection tool like Valve employs in CS:GO, Activision will seemingly continue this whack-a-mole war against cheaters indefinitely. "Delivering a fair and fun experience for all players is our top priority," Activision says. "We will not rest, and we appreciate your patience." 30,000 more bans today The fight against cheating in #Warzone continues. https://t.co/v1SxErsUzXApril 12, 2021
  16. Justin Bieber struggled through his first year of marriage to model Hailey Bieber because he couldn't let go of his trust issues. The Sorry hitmaker tied the knot with Hailey in a New York City courthouse in September 2018, just two months after they became engaged while on vacation. However, life as newlyweds didn't go quite as smoothly as they had hoped, as Justin's past mental health problems, relating to the pressures of life in the spotlight, caused him to walk "on eggshells" around Hailey. "The first year of marriage was really tough because there was a lot going back to the trauma. There was just a lack of trust," he confessed in the May 2021 issue of GQ magazine. "There was (sic) all these things that you don't want to admit to the person that you're with, because it's scary. You don't want to scare them off by saying, 'I'm scared.'" Yet, the singer credited Hailey's unwavering support and his faith in God with helping to pull the couple through the rough time, and now, the stars are enjoying "building these memories" and strengthening their bond before "eventually" having children. "It's beautiful that we have that to look forward to," Justin smiled. "Before, I didn't have that to look forward to in my life. My home life was unstable. I didn't have a significant other. I didn't have someone to love. I didn't have someone to pour into." And it was the lack of a supportive partner at the time that led the star to turn to drugs to cope with his mental health woes, which hit rock bottom in 2017. "There was a sense of still yearning for more," he mused. "It was like I had all this success and it was still like: I'm still sad, and I'm still in pain... And so, for me, the drugs were a numbing agent to just continue to get through." Elsewhere in the chat, the superstar revealed that his substance abuse became so bad at one point that members of his security team would sneak into his bedroom at night to check he was still alive. "I just lost control of my vision for my career," Justin shared. Now, by opening up about his dark times, the singer hopes to help others who may also be struggling, and after making peace with his own troubled youth, he finally feels free. "I have a wife who I adore, who I feel comforted by. I feel safe," the 27-year-old declared.
  17. DMX is in the hospital on life support after suffering a heart attack. The rapper's lawyer, Murray Richman, told The Associated Press on Saturday evening that DMX was admitted to New York's White Plains Hospital and that "he's quite ill." Murray did not confirm reports that the 50-year-old rapper and actor had overdosed on drugs. He did not say what caused the heart attack. DMX's agency did not respond to NPR's emailed request for comment. News of DMX's condition prompted an outpouring of prayer and support on social media from fans and celebrities, including rappers Missy Elliott, Rick Ross, Ja Rule, Ice T and Chance the Rapper. In a statement to TMZ, a representative for DMX — who was born Earl Simmons — said his family appreciated "the overwhelming outpouring of heartfelt love, encouragement, support and prayers for Earl. Earl is someone whose life and music have been a source of inspiration and strength to so many people around the world. It is reassuring to see his fans return that same passion and energy to him during his time of need." DMX, a fixture in the music world since the 1990s, has long been open about his past struggles with addiction, a fact that many Twitter users noted and praised. He most recently checked into rehab for substance abuse in 2019, after serving a yearlong jail sentence for tax fraud and evasion, according to Variety. His most recent performance was a Verzuz battle against Snoop Dogg in July 2020 that Billboard reports drew more than 500,000 viewers. He launched his rap career in the late 1990s with the release of his first album, It's Dark and Hell Is Hot, through Ruff Ryders and Def Jam. His second album, Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood, eventually went triple platinum, and ...And Then There Was X became his third consecutive album to debut at No. 1 on the charts. It also produced his biggest hit single, "Party Up (Up in Here)." In 2003, he became the first artist to have his first five albums enter the Billboard charts at No. 1. DMX has released a total of seven studio albums and earned three Grammy nominations, two for rap solo performance and one for rap album, Variety notes. He has also appeared in several movies, including action films Romeo Must Die and Exit Wounds.
  18. With the help of Viola Davis, Spike Lee, and many of Boseman's other collaborators, the upcoming Netflix special will pay tribute to the late actor. Netflix released the trailer for its upcoming special, Chadwick Boseman: Portrait of an Artist, which will commemorate the late actor's influential career in a documentary style tribute. Boseman, who's best known for portraying the titular hero in Black Panther, passed away in August of 2020 after filming roles in Spike Lee's Da 5 Bloods and George C. Wolfe's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. Despite Boseman's struggles with his health, his costars reported that he remained intensely committed to his work until the very end. He's now expected to win a posthumous Oscar for his emotional performance in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. The trailer for the Netflix special Chadwick Boseman: Portrait of an Artist includes snippets of Boseman's work as a troubled trumpet player in Wolfe's Oscar-nominated film as well as voiceover from the actor himself. It also features some of Boseman's collaborators including Viola Davis, Danai Gurira, and Spike Lee, who reflect on the late actor's dedication to his craft which fueled his many iconic performances. Davis says, “You know you have to step up when you’re in his presence," and Lee adds, "He just had this weight, this aura.” Check out the trailer Viewers have had the privilege of watching Boseman transform into many different characters on screen, but it looks as though the Netflix special will give audiences an inside look at what really set Boseman apart as an artist behind the scenes. Hopefully, audiences will walk away from the tribute with a deeper understanding and appreciation for Boseman's lasting impact on the entertainment industry. Chadwick Boseman: Portrait of an Artist will be available to stream on Netflix for 30 days starting April 17.
  19. Nintendo has announced a new color for its portable-only Switch Lite. The new hue is “blue,” which looks pretty close to the Game Boy’s “pocket blue” color variant. The new color could also be inspired by Pantone’s decision to name “classic blue” the Color of the Year for 2020. Blue joins the other four variants available in the Switch Lite lineup: gray, turquoise, yellow, and coral, the latter of which was the first color announced in the product’s release since the Switch Lite debuted in 2019. Unlike the regular Nintendo Switch, which is a hybrid console that can be played on the go or docked and paired with a larger screen, the Switch Lite is designed for handheld-only gameplay. The blue Switch Lite will be available on May 21st, the same day as Nintendo’s upcoming adventure game Miitopia launches on the Switch. And just like the other four colors in the Switch Lite portfolio, the blue Switch Lite will be priced at $199.99.
  20. The Mortal Kombat reboot will have plenty of the bloody, violent action fans are used to, but star Lewis Tan says the gore is still tasteful. The Mortal Kombat reboot is plenty gory, but in a tasteful way, according to star Lewis Tan. The MK video games are notorious for their copious amounts of blood and brutally violent fatality finishing moves, which have become even more ridiculous with each successive entry in the series. That gory style is alive and well in the new live-action movie, but the creative minds behind Mortal Kombat have tried to keep it from becoming too extreme. When the first Mortal Kombat game launched in arcades in 1992, it quickly became infamous for one main reason – the violence. The finishing moves featured in the game, known as fatalities by Mortal Kombat fans, are performed by executing a complex series of button-presses. This feature gained particular infamy for letting players brutalize their opponents after a victory by tearing their bodies to pieces or burning their carcass alive. Over the years, the Mortal Kombat franchise has upheld its reputation as one of the bloodiest series of games on the market. The more recent entries have taken the violence to bizarre, almost comical levels. It's pretty safe to say that any bloodless Mortal Kombat movie would feel more than incomplete. And the viscera is definitely there in the reboot, but according to actor Lewis Tan, who plays Cole Young, the new movie is keeping things tasteful. In a recent interview with Variety, Tan spoke about the film’s level of violence. While he says the movie stays true to the games with a "hard R" level of gore, it does stop short of being too extreme for viewers. Read Tan’s full quote below: “Hell yeah. That was one thing for sure that the director was adamant on. He was like, ‘This is going to be hard R. Try not to make it NC-17, but let’s take it all the way up until that point.’ And that’s what we did. But I think he did it really tastefully. He didn’t just try to be super gory and crazy. I’m not into all that, but I think if you’re going to do ‘Mortal Kombat’ correctly, you’ve got to have it.” While the idea of tasteful gore in Mortal Kombat may sound a bit paradoxical, it's certainly possible. Television has taken a visceral turn over the past decade with the bloody battles of Game of Thrones and the savage killings in The Walking Dead working as prime examples of how bloody fantasy/sci-fi violence can still feel grounded if it works in the interest of the story. It’s easy to write gruesome fights for the sake of being gruesome; it’s far more challenging to craft a narrative that justifies its brutality. Director Simon McQuoid has been outspoken throughout the leadup to Mortal Kombat’s release about his desire to tell a grounded, engaging story. The trailer footage that’s been released shows a movie that’s much more serious than the two ‘90s MK films, while still seeming to embrace the absurdity of the source material. Balancing the Mortal Kombat story and the violence may be its biggest challenge, but if the film handles it well, it could be one of the best video game movies to date. Mortal Kombat releases on April 23, simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max.
