'Sopranos,' 'Goodfellas' Scribes Team for Mob Drama at Showtime

Terence Winter will write the project based on the 'Wiseguy' author's history of organized crime in America.

The Sopranos Emmy winner Terence Winter and Goodfellas screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi are coming together for a mob drama at Showtime.

Winter will write the untitled project, which is based on Pileggi's in-depth chronology of organized crime in America, which is also the history of corruption in the United States, as seen through the eyes of the Mafia's first family. Showtime and Imagine Television are producing.

Winter will executive produce with Pileggi and Imagine's Brian Grazer and Samie Kim Falvey. 

Both Winter and Pileggi are well versed in portraying mobsters on screen. In addition to The Sopranos, where he was an executive producer and credited writer on more than a quarter of its episodes, Winter also created and executive produced HBO's Boardwalk Empire.

Pileggi earned an Oscar nomination for the Goodfellas screenplay (co-written with director Martin Scorsese), which was based on his book Wiseguy. He and Scorsese also wrote the script for Casino, based on another of Pileggi's books, and co-created CBS' 2012-13 series Vegas.

Imagine TV's current output includes Wu-Tang: An American Saga at Hulu, National Geographic's Genius anthology and Paramount Network's 68 Whiskey. It's also developing a scripted series based on Tiger King subject Joe Exotic, with Nicolas Cage attached to star.

The mob drama will seek to join a roster of dramas at Showtime that also includes Billions, City on a Hill, The Chi, The L Word: Generation Q, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels and the soon-to-end Shameless.

This seems to be a wise choice. Getting two of the best scribes behind two of the best tales of the mob to be realized on screen, large or small, to do a definitive history of the mob, well, that's a match made in heaven.
