Would you rather start your own small business or work for someone else?

I like both. I am an Electrical Engineer and while I have tried to operate a small business, I find it very difficult to find clients with small enough projects in my line of work. I am currently looking for work where I can find it and will be happy to work for someone, while trying to continue finding additional work to fill up my spare time. The dream is to one day establish a small/medium size consulting company helping others perform more effectively using a combination of industry knowledge and automation techniques making every day work more efficient.

A well-run small business is one of the best things you can have in life. However when things turn sour and it's your own business it's not as easy as working for someone else. So it's a double edged sword imo.

I find owning a small business is better than working for someone else, at least in my field - which I bill by the hour.  Any time I'm doing something for a client, I'm billing.  I get to control my own hours, I work when I want, and where I want.

Those employed in my field on average make less than me and have less control / freedom; however, those that make and equivalent or more than me work 7 days a week, almost 20h / day.

I think in today's age, it's wise to diversify your income streams - so that one does not solely rely on only one source of income.

Starting your own small business comes with a lot of risk, so it would largely depend on the work that is available.
