David Ayer, director of 2016's Suicide Squad, recently took to Twitter to express his gratitude over fans' support of the #ReleaseTheAyerCut movement. Ayer's Suicide Squad film – which marked the first appearance of Margot Robbie's now iconic Harley Quinn –  faced criticism from critics and audiences upon its release for a myriad of reasons, both from a technical and narrative standpoint. Despite the pushback, the film was enough of a box-office success for the studio to greenlight a follow-up directed by James Gunn this year, although Gunn's The Suicide Squad is more of a soft reboot rather than a direct sequel to Ayer's film.

Fan-led campaigns for studios to release director's cuts of their negatively received films have become a common trend in recent years. The #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement was the originator of this trend, becoming a viral phenomenon following the critical and commercial failure of 2017's Justice League. Warner Bros. finally capitulated to fans' demands last year, going as far as allowing Snyder to reshoot and update entire stretches of the film to finally realize his vision into a four hour-long cut. Since then, fans have campaigned for the studio to give 2016's Suicide Squad a similar treatment, adopting the #ReleaseTheAyerCut hashtag for their movement.

Ayer himself recently shared his appreciation for fans' support of the #ReleaseTheAyerCut movement after the hashtag began trending on Friday. The director tweeted that "It's humbling to have so many people pulling for me." Check out the director's full tweet below:

Since its release, Ayer's Suicide Squad has become a notorious case-study for how studio meddling can negatively impact a film's development. The director's original cut of the film was supposedly much darker and less comedic than the final theatrical cut ended up being. Indeed, Warner Bros. allegedly hired the same trailer company responsible for editing Suicide Squad's trailers (which were received well by audiences) to edit the final cut of the entire film, without giving Ayer much say. The resulting product was a tonal mess of conflicting visions that failed to convey Ayer's original idea for the film.

As #ReleaseTheAyerCut moves forward, it's important for fans to temper their expectations. Studios typically have little financial incentive to allow such expansive (and expensive) director's cuts to come to fruition. This is especially true of the Suicide Squad as an IP, considering the disappointing performance of Gunn's highly-anticipated and highly-publicized entry in the franchise. That said, if fans continue to show their unwavering support for #ReleaseTheAyerCut, they may have a shot at persuading Warner Bros. otherwise.
