A Lucasfilm executive shares a thread of reshot scenes from the original Star Wars trilogy and the prequels, reminding/informing fans just how many famous shots weren’t acquired during principal photography. George Lucas’ Star Wars: A New Hope (then known only as Star Wars) and his galaxy far, far away set a new precedent for story, spectacle, visuals, and box office gross. The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi raised the bar even more before making the fandom wait 16 years for The Phantom Menace. While they were box office successes, the prequels have faced criticism. However, many have warmed up towards them following the lackluster sequel trilogy.

Despite the adoration of the original trilogy, Lucas has repeatedly felt that some things could be improved as technology continued to catch up with his vision. The original trilogy has various versions that added, tweaked, cut, or even replaced details and/or characters. Lucas’ reputation as a revisionist wouldn’t become widely apparent until the 1997 Star Wars Special Edition releases, which made clear replacements to the special effects. Similar changes have been applied to the prequels as they moved to home video. While Lucas has continued to alter his films long after production, all filmmakers engage in the process of reshoots, where productions schedule additional photography to perfect the overall product.

Lucasfilm’s Pablo Hidalgo recently compiled several iconic shots from both trilogies that were captured during reshoots. The cool Twitter thread helps to de-stigmatize the general perception of this stage of production, showcasing several insights into how much time passed behind the scenes from one shot to the next. Some shots were filmed after sets had been torn down months before the theatrical release. Check out the beginning of the thread below:

Casual moviegoers tend to interpret reshoots as meaning the studio wants to fix what was originally filmed. Hidalgo's is proof that this is an inaccurate assumption. It’s unfortunate that leaked images that permeate social media not only result in spoilers and wild speculation, but comparisons made between principal photography and additional lead to the misguided deconstruction of an enigmatic creative process. Recent Star Wars-related examples of films that admittedly underwent major changes during reshoots include Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Solo: A Star Wars Story—the latter being an example of the more stereotypical reshoots that occur when a new director comes aboard.

In popular culture, no film has become more synonymous with reshoots as 2017’s Justice League. The recent release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League on HBO Max showed just how far a film can stray from a creative’s original vision if reshoots are provoked by things like studio interference. In 1976, Lucas invested well over $400,000 of his own money into Star Wars and, given the success of American Graffiti, the filmmaker had a lot of leverage with Fox at the time. Lucas went on to establish Lucasfilm, giving him complete creative freedom until selling the company to Disney in 2012. Regardless, Hidalgo's breakdown of shots is a reminder of how much revision went into the beloved films.
