Want to send someone a message? You can do that through your Amazon Echo. The Alexa assistant supports sending and receiving voice and in-app messages on Android and iOS and SMS messages on Android.

Just ask Alexa to send a message, tell her what you want to say, and she sends it. If you receive a message, you'll hear a chime, and a yellow light ring displays on your device. You're also notified in the Alexa app. You can even message people who don't have an Echo as long as they're running the Alexa app. Here's how it's done.

1. 'Alexa, Send a Message'

Messaging is available with all Echo devices as well as the Alexa app. Your first step is to sign up for Alexa-to-Alexa Calling and Messaging if you haven't already done so.

You'll need an iPhone with iOS 9.0 or higher or an Android phone with Android 5.0 or higher. Open the Alexa app on your phone and tap on the Conversations icon (the dialogue balloon icon). If you haven't yet registered, you're asked to confirm your name, allow access to your contacts, and verify your phone number. Alexa uses your contact list to find people you know who have an Echo device or the Alexa app and have also registered for the calling and texting feature. To receive messages through the Alexa app on your phone, make sure you've enabled notifications for the app.

To send a message through your Echo, say: "Alexa, send a message." Alexa asks for the name of the recipient. Choose a name from your contact list in the Alexa app. Alexa then asks for the text of the message. Dictate your message. Alternatively, you can tell Alexa to send a message to [name of contact], and Alexa asks you for the message. After you've finished dictating the message, Alexa sends it.

You can also send a message through the Alexa app. Open the app and tap on the Conversations icon. Tap on the New Conversation icon in the upper-right corner. Then tap on the name of the contact you wish to message. Hold down the microphone icon and dictate your message, or tap on the keyboard icon and type your message. When you're done, Alexa sends it.

2. 'Alexa, Play Message'

Contacts who own an Echo will be notified of the message on their device and in the Alexa app. Those who only have the Alexa app and are signed up for Alexa-to-Alexa Calling and Messaging will be notified of messages in the app.

If you receive a message from another Alexa contact, the yellow light ring flashes on your Echo device. To hear the message, say: "Alexa, play message." Alexa tells you who the message is for and asks if you want to hear it. Say: "Yes," and Alexa plays the message.

Your phone also displays a notification that you've received a message through the Alexa app. Tap on the message or open the Alexa app to view it. You can then tap on the Play button to hear it read aloud. You can even respond to an existing message in the Alexa app. With the message displayed on the screen, hold down the microphone icon and dictate your response.

3. 'Alexa, Send a Text Message'

If you have an Android phone, you can now send SMS messages in the US using your Echo. First, activate SMS on Alexa by tapping the Conversations bubble in the Alexa app and selecting Contacts > My Profile. Toggle Send SMS to on. Then, all you need to do is talk to your Echo by saying "Alexa, send a text message to [someone in your contacts]." Alexa asks what you want to say. Speak your message, and away it goes.

You can also send an SMS message to someone not in your contact list by specifying the phone number, as in “Alexa, send a text message to 555-555-5555.” Give Alexa the message, and it's sent.

There's no option to send SMS messages from the iPhone at the moment, unfortunately, because Apple does not provide third parties with access to its API.
