Well over a decade’s worth of whispers and rumblings surrounding the possibility of a live-action Star Wars TV series have finally been turned into reality.

Lucasfilm has formally announced the hiring of Jon Favreau to executive produce and write the new series. It will be Favreau’s responsibility to assemble what Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy calls “a diverse group of writers and directors” to shape new stories in the Star Wars expanded universe.

As expected and anticipated, the new series will air exclusively on Disney’s upcoming and as-of-yet named direct-to-consumer streaming platform. It could be used as a launch title or come much later down the road.

Favreau is no stranger to Star Wars having professed his love for the Original Trilogy as a child. He’s also lent his voice to Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and has a small role in the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story film.

First, Favreau has to wrap up post-production on Disney’s ambitious live-action The Lion King film that he’s directing. That film won’t be released until 2019.
