Vampyr Story Trailer Is Dark And Grim

Focus Home Interactive and Dontnod Entertainment released the story trailer for the upcoming action-RPG Vampyr. The game is gearing up for release this June for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC, and the story trailer gives gamers a small piece of insight into the dark and grim world of Vampyr.

 

The near three minute trailer for Vampyr has been posted on various channels, including the PlayStation channel on YouTube. It starts with a look at the main character in a pit of bodies... a dumping field for the dead. The main protagonist, Dr. Jonathan Reid, wakes up from the pit of bodies and climbs out.

The undead Dr. Reid journeys out of a building only to be met by a wary police officer who knows that the Doc should be dead but isn't. The officer, in panic, shoots Dr. Reid again.

Through the trailer we learn that the Doc is referred to as an "echo," after he confirms that he's a vampire. There are two things happening at once in the trailer -- Dr. Reid is dealing with a bad case of vampirism while London is dealing with the Spanish flu outbreak.

Lots of people are dropping dead in the streets, or suffering and dying while bed-ridden. While this is taking place there are also grizzly murders happening as well, creating a murder-mystery atmosphere within the action-RPG guise of Vampyr.

During the trailer we learn that the killings happening with the epidemic seem to tie into one another, and that something "primitive" is killing people suffering from the Spanish flu.

Meanwhile, Dr. Reid also has to deal with his own vampirism... and this is where the gameplay forces players to make some difficult decisions. In order to keep Dr. Reid alive they will need to feed on other NPCs, whether it's people close to Dr. Reid or random people on the street. Every death comes with a consequence, though.

In Vampyr, Dr. Reid will need to kill to stay alive (or rather, undead) and this draws the attention of a secret society of vampires, who attempt to recruit the Doctor into their fold. This also has the unintended consequence of getting the Church involved, who sends out hunters to dispatch of the vampires located around the London area.

Players will have to upgrade and improve the Doc's skills while also mastering his combat abilities. Much like Legacy of Kain and Vampire The Masquerade, there are various supernatural abilities that can help you in a number of ways, from traversal to combat. You'll need the abilities to not only fight against the hunters but also to fight against other monsters.

The Unreal Engine 4-powered Vampyr is due out on June 5th for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC. I don't know if this will attract the Life Is Strange crowd that Dontnod managed to appeal to a couple of years ago, but fans of historical fiction and Gothic-storytelling might be intrigued.
