After revealing that Shadow of the Tomb Raider is set to arrive later this year for home consoles and PC, Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix decided to tease gamers with the very first look at the upcoming action-platformer.

Over on the official Tomb Raider Twitter account, the team posted up a short gif image that has several pieces of an image that comes together to form a collage. After all of the pieces are neatly fitted into place, it creates an image of Lara Croft, the titular character from the Tomb Raider series.

The image features a concept rendering of Lara posing on a vine-riddled tree branch in the lush jungle of a forgotten Mayan civilization. The bruised and battered heroine is detailed enough that we can see she has on her combat gloves, cargo pants, tank top and a rugged looking knife.

The climbing ax hangs from her utility belt, while a gun is strapped to a holster on her thigh. She's also coming back with her trusty bow and arrow kit, which have now become a staple for the character, much like the bow and arrow for Katniss in the Hunger Games. In the background, a temple can be seen, with a brief orange glow coming from the entrance.

The most striking visual detail about this real look at Lara Croft is the fact that it appears to fit in line with the theme of some sort of eclipse, which casts an ominous shadow of Lara across the land. It obviously fits in line with the name of the game, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, where many of the promotional posters feature Lara standing on a mountaintop overlooking temple ruins while an eclipse appears to be taking place.

Given the physical scrapes and bruises that Lara has endured in the image above, it's safe to say that Crystal Dynamics are sticking with the rough-and-tumble, ultra-violent approach that was taken in the previous two games, the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot and the follow-up, Rise of the Tomb Raider.

The Twitter account also appears to intimate that the game will be rated 'M' for Mature, so expect the same level gore and violence that happened to be present in the previous two outings.

The first major promotional image for Shadow of the Tomb Raider is quite striking, and a lot of gamers are definitely entranced with its visual presentation.

Crystal Dynamics to take one step further by allowing gamers to download a full version of the image from over on Flickr, where you can use an HD version as a desktop background.

You can look for Shadow of the Tomb Raider to launch for the Xbox One, the PlayStation 4 and on Steam for PC starting September 14th, 2018 later this year. A major gameplay trailer reveal is also expected to arrive on April 27th at the end of the month.
