uTorrent, BitTorrent Mainline for Mac Get Stable Versions

Recommended Posts

Mac users finally get to enjoy the some of the same functions and features that their PC counterparts have for years.
A stable uTorrent for Mac BitTorrent client has been more than three years making. An alpha version was leaked back in 2008 and a beta version was officially released this past Spring. Now, at long last BitTorrent Inc. has announced the release of stable versions of uTorrent for Mac along with its BitTorrent Mainline client.

Up until BitTorrent users on Macs were more inclined to use stable versions of other BitTorrent clients for Mac like Transmission (the most popular) or XTorrent.

It was the growing usage of Apple products by BitTorrent users that helped spur their progress.

“In the BitTorrent community, the number of users with at least one Apple product is growing at a pretty quick pace,” writes Brett Nishi, BitTorrent Inc.’s Director of Product Management, in a blog post. “And we hear you loud and clear with your requests for a little more love.”

The new Mac features include:

RSS Feeds and Smart Feed Subscriptions: Subscribe to torrent RSS feeds inside µTorrent and BitTorrent Mainline. Set up Smart Feeds to auto-magically fetch torrents and start downloads.
Scheduler: Pre-schedule start, limit and stop activity for downloads at regular intervals throughout the week. A valuable feature if you’re stymied by metered and shared networks.
Remote + Mobile: Simple, secure access to µTorrent and BitTorrent Mainline clients from anywhere. No complicated network configuration required. Add and manage torrents from any browser, mobile browser (iPad and more), and even a native Android app.
Advanced controls and info: More control and information about what’s happening behind the scenes. Upgraded logging features too. And, now access double-secret-super-advanced preferences (they’re hidden behind CMD+OPT+,). Use wisely.
One of the main features uTorrent for Mac users have been clamoring for is a speed scheduler. With today’s growing trend of bandwidth throttling and data consumption fees it’s important that users are able to automatically start, stop, or limit their BitTorrent activity as necessary.

So it would seem that BitTorrent Inc. has indeed filled Mac users’ requests for a “little more love.”

No word yet on when or if Mac users will see a uTorrent Plus versionthat was rolled out to PC users earlier this month. The subscription-only version of the BitTorrent client adds features like integrated virus protection, remote file transfer, and seamless format conversion for transfer to smartphones and gaming consoles.
