Cleveland Indians right-hander Mike Clevinger is in some hot water with Major League Baseball for a fairly strange reason.

Clevinger tweeted a picture Friday of an official warning letter that he received from the league. The letter read that he had “violated Major League Baseball’s Uniform Regulations” during a start earlier this month because “various illustrations were visible” on his cleats. They also warned that Clevinger would be subject to a fine if he continued to wear “non-conforming shoes.”

The 27-year-old Clevinger, who is 2-0 with a 2.76 ERA in seven starts this season, may be content with accepting the fine however — just an hour after tweeting the warning letter, he posted another tweet showing off some cleats that he was apparently planning to wear for his Mother’s Day weekend start.

It’s an odd development given that we have seen a number of ornate cleats in the sport over the years. But Clevinger, who is pre-arbitration, is only making $558,500 this season, so he may unfortunately have to conform eventually.
