Samsung Galaxy S Light Luxury official with Snapdragon 660, 16MP camera

The Samsung Galaxy S Light Luxury is now official in China - the handset that was previously rumored to be called “Galaxy S8 lite”. It packs a 5.8” Infinity Display inside a body the same size as the Galaxy S8.

It's a Super AMOLED panel with 1,080 x 2,220 px resolution (18.5:9). The phone has a single camera on the back - 16 MP sensor and an f/1.7 aperture. It can record 4K video at 30 fps, but lacks OIS. The selfie camera has an 8 MP sensor and f/1.7 aperture.

The Snapdragon 660 chipset inside the Galaxy S Light Luxury should offer similar CPU performance to the Galaxy S8, though it is behind on GPU power. It does have 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage, so Samsung cut no corners there.

Given the Galaxy S Light Luxury's size, it shouldn’t be a surprise that there’s a 3,000 mAh battery – the same capacity as the Galaxy S8. There’s support for fast wireless and wired charging, the latter of which goes over the USB-C port. The phone is IP68 waterproof as expected.

It has a 3.5 mm headphone jack and comes bundled with an AKG in-ear headset. FM radio is enabled out of the box. There’s a fingerprint reader on its back, but Samsung did not take the opportunity to correct its position. Iris scanning is also on board. As is Bixby with its dedicated button.

The Samsung Galaxy Light Luxury is available only in China for now and it comes preloaded with the apps necessary to replace the Google apps (e.g. Golder Map). It’s currently available in Burgundy Red, though a Black Night version should launch later on.

The price is CNY 4,000 – that’s $625/€530 in western currency. So, no, we’re not quite sure what’s the point of this phone when a Galaxy S9 costs about the same.
