Stewart, three young Cats sign AFL deals

Recommended Posts

Boom Geelong defender Tom Stewart has gone from the coach's doghouse to penning a new AFL deal in the space of a week.

The 25-year-old has signed a new contract taking him through to the end of the 2021 campaign.

It comes on the heels of Saturday night's scrappy win over Carlton at Kardinia Park.

Chris Scott bemoaned several undisciplined acts during the uninspiring win, which included a free kick given away by Stewart after he threw the ball at an opponent.

"We had a chat earlier in the week and I apologised," Stewart told reporters on Friday.

"He said 'Apologise once and don't do it again'.

"It's as simple as that and we move forward."

In just his second season at the top level, Stewart has been spoken of as a possible All-Australian in 2018.

His leadership and strong form have been a godsend for Geelong with key defenders Harry Taylor (three games) and Lachie Henderson (none) barely sighted.

"It's been fun ... we're all pretty similar ages down there and we're just trying to learn off each other and gel as a group," Stewart said.

"I'm just trying to help out as much as I can and impact as many contests as I can.

"Being a bit older I have had leadership roles in the past, so I suppose it's sort of a natural progression for me."

Youngsters Lachie Fogarty, Charlie Constable and Mark O'Connor have also agreed to new deals.

The Cats will look to improve on their 6-4 record when they take on Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium on Saturday.
