James Gunn Confirms Mantis/Ego Easter Egg in Guardians 2

James Gunn confirms a recently surfaced Ego/Mantis Easter Egg in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. However, the filmmaker denies that it's the huge one that he's been teasing for quite some time now, which means fans' mission to find the seemingly non-existent reference will continue. The MCU is known for sneaking in small nuggets of information and callbacks in their films, providing additional entertainment for fans who are part of the geek culture. But while most Marvel directors have done a good job slipping these fun references in their flicks, Gunn is arguably the reigning king when it comes to hiding callbacks within his films, adding to their rewatchability factor.

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Mantis explained how she ended up as Peter Quill's dad's assistant saying "Ego found me in a larva state. Orphaned on my home world. He raised me by hand and kept me as his own." It was believable considering how useful she has been to the Celestial being, but a brand new theory postulates that she may not be a random pick as the theory suggests that she could be one of Ego's kids based on a newfound Easter Egg in the sequel.

Gunn took to his official Facebook account to address the rumor going around considering Mantis' real identity. While the filmmaker confirmed the Easter Egg featuring Ego embroiled in a love affair with a species similar to Guardians of the Galaxy's resident empath, he said that it's nothing more than that, effectively squashing claims that she and Quill are siblings. Nonetheless, Gunn lauded whoever found the reference.

While that's an interesting Easter Egg, Gunn also reiterated that it's not the big one that fans have been hunting for for about a year now. As it turns out, there's a bigger fun reference that remains undiscovered in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The filmmaker won't provide any clues about them, but he does quickly confirm or deny any theory fans may have regarding the hidden nods. With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 rumored to roll out in 2020, it's possible that by the time the threequel releases, fans will have yet to find the big Easter egg for its predecessor.

Despite the current state of Peter, Mantis and the rest of the team - save for Rocket Raccoon and Nebula - at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, Chris Pratt, Pom Klementieff and Dave Bautista have confirmed that they're returning to reprise their respective roles in Avengers 4 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. At least fans now know that the future of the Guardians of the Galaxy won't involve the reveal that Peter Quill and Mantis are siblings.
