[This story contains spoilers for Marvel's Infinity Wars Prime]

Fans who left Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War wanting revenge for the apparent deaths of a number of Marvel characters — among them Black Panther, Spider-Man and the Winter Soldier — have a pleasant surprise waiting for them at the end of Infinity Wars Prime, a new comic book release released Wednesday: The apparent death of Thanos.

Taking place in Marvel's comic book continuity rather than the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the issue features the villain meeting his seeming end — he’s both stabbed through the chest and then beheaded (perhaps a nod to Josh Brolin's Thanos telling Chris Hemsworth's Thor he should have gone for the head). This would definitely seem to mean that he’s dead, were this not comics (Thanos has apparently died more than once before, after all). The death all comes at the hands of a new mystery character called Requiem, seemingly recognized by Thanos before the Titan's demise. Requiem will be at the center of the Infinity Wars comic book series as it continues through the summer.

Complicating the matter of Thanos’ death is the September release of Thanos Legacy No. 1, which will reportedly not only explain the connection between Requiem and Thanos, but also connect the events of Infinity Wars Prime with the popular “Thanos Wins” storyline — which features Thanos in the future, still alive.

A sign of a potential resurrection to come, a glimpse of a parallel future or something altogether different? That’ll remain to be seen in September; until then, fans can rest assured that, for now, Thanos — like Tom Holland’s Peter Parker — doesn’t feel too good.
