Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ running Android 8.0 Oreo

Last month, when Samsung’s Android 9 Pie software leaked out almost entirely, it was presumed that a much earlier release than usual would happen. According to a post on the Samsung+ app, however, it seems the benefits of Project Treble will actually have almost no impact on Samsung’s release schedule.

Despite the fact that the Android 9 Pie beta for the Galaxy S9 and S9+ is expected to commence in the near future, Samsung has announced that the final software version isn’t expected to reach Galaxy smartphones until “early next year.” Thus, the new schedule coincides more or less perfectly with the release of Android 8.0 Oreo, which reached Galaxy S8 units in early February and the Galaxy Note 8 in mid-March.

Alongside the newly-announced release date, Samsung also confirmed a few features that would make their way to the new software. These include 157 new emojis that range from a bagel with cream cheese and a mooncake, to a llama and a teddy bear. Also, users can expect the Adaptive Battery feature and support for App Actions and Slices.

While the wait for the official release may be pretty long, the support page for the Android 9 Pie beta went live a few days ago, suggesting that it will be released soon. It should be available to a limited number of Galaxy S9 and S9+ users across the US, UK, and South Korea.
