  1. Some Internet piracy groups decided to implement some new regulations and standards last week. Instead of releasing TV shows in the Xvid/avi format, groups responsible for putting major TV shows online switched to MP4/x264. Outraged by the lack of democracy, some BitTorrent users are directing their anger at bewildered torrent sites and even threatening to boycott releases. For those who understand, the whole thing is pretty amusing. SAD PIRATE Every now and again, the world’s most famous piracy release groups get together and have a big old meeting to decide how they’ll carry out their future activities. At the top of the agenda is an item of utmost importance – how to change things around to ensure the highest levels of annoyance and inconvenience for BitTorrent downloaders. Ok, so the last sentence isn’t true, but nevertheless that appears to be the current assessment of events according to some BitTorrent users. Worryingly, the interpretation from others is even more wide of the mark. The problem stems back to a new document which details a set of standards TV show release groups such as LOL and MOMENTUM will have to live up to in order to comply with so-called ‘Scene rules’. Not complying with the format means that a release group’s work risks being ‘nuked’ – a term which means something has been rated second-class by their pirating peers. The document – ‘The SD x264 TV Releasing Standards 2012′ – is extremely detailed and covers all sorts of technical issues, but the main controversy stems from the adoption of the x264 codec. “x264 has become the most advanced video codec over the past few years. Compared to Xvid, it is able to provide higher quality and compression at greater SD resolutions,” the rule document begins. “This standard aims to bring quality control back to SD releases. There are many standalone players/streamers such as TviX, Popcorn Hour, WDTV HD Media Player, Boxee, Xtreamer, PS3, XBOX 360, iPad, & HDTVs that can playback H264 and AAC encapsulated in MP4,” the doc adds. From February 22nd and earlier in some cases, release groups including ASAP, BAJSKORV, C4TV, D2V, DiVERGE, FTP, KYR, LMAO, LOL, MOMENTUM, SYS, TLA and YesTV began releasing TV shows in the new format. Out went Xvid and avi, in came x264 and MP4. However, while the release groups want to move with the times, there are many people consuming their content who either don’t or can’t. In the main, people seem disappointed because their standalone Xvid compatible DVD players won’t play the new releases. Some of the reactions are polite enough, but show a misunderstanding of how the system works. “LOL, why are all your new uploads MP4 format? How do we get hold of you? We need the AVI format back, really frustrating as most DVD players don’t play MP4 format which means we are back to converting format to AVI – how 3rd world LOL,” begins one user on popular torrent site EZTV. “Hi there, I agree too please can you revert back to AVI as most DVD players cannot recognize MP4 format and this means I need to do conversion to AVI all the time for my grand mother and its quite painful,” says another. At worst, some of the comments show an embarrassing sense of entitlement and an attitude that those downloading for free are actually “customers” of these release groups and as such deserve to be treated better. “F@#k LOL and their mp4′s,” is just one example of the aggression directed towards them. But there are another set of users who don’t understand where the releases come from at all and are instead directing their anger at the torrent sites – the equivalent of blaming Google for not listing the pictures people had hoped for in their image search. “MP4 SUCKS AND IS A BULL SHIT FORMAT. AVI WILL ALWAYS BE KING. MORE TROUBLE THAN IS WORTH. TIME TO GET MY DOWNLOADS FROM A BETTER SITE THAT OFFERS AVI AND I KNOW A MAJORITY OF THE DOWN LOADERS WILL DO THE SAME,” shouts an EZTV user. “SO I THINK EZTV HAS A LIMITED LIFE SPAN LEFT IF THEY DO NOT TELL DOWN LOADERS TO GO BACK TO AVI IT IS PROBABLY ALL OVER FOR THIS SITE.” First off, these release groups aren’t deliberately releasing TV shows to please the masses. They do it for their own entertainment and it’s only when they leak out do the wider world get access to them. They are certainly not being put online to satisfy the needs of ALL CAPS MAN. Second, the torrent sites index other people’s content, they tend not to be the originators of it. Sure, some of the more friendly but bewildered comments of upset downloaders are pretty amusing to read, but the more aggressive ones highlight a more worrying trend. Somewhere along the line a consumer appeared who not only wants everything super quickly and for free, but also believes that the same should be offered with Class A service. Should these things not be delivered, he feels it is his right to take his “business” elsewhere. Could this become the new consumer standard for service on the Internet? At the moment this toughest breed of consumer appears to be in the minority but thanks to the law of supply and demand, even he will find his needs served. Already people are ‘pirating’ the MP4 releases and re-uploading them in the Xvid format to satisfy his needs. In the meantime, no doubt LOL and LMAO will be doing what their acronyms suggest.

  7. Yes, The Pirate Bay is down at the moment. No, there’s no reason to panic. Every time The Pirate Bay suffers a few minutes for downtime, thousands of people start to worry that something awful has happened to their beloved site. Luckily, this is usually not the case. When the site’s not responding someone probably tripped over a cable, they’re working on software upgrades, replacing hardware or facing another technical difficulty. And indeed, the current downtime also has a technical nature. The Pirate Bay team told TorrentFreak that they’re working on a problem that arose after a software upgrade this morning. Everything should be back to normal soon. Update: The site’s back after a few hours of downtime.

  10. Swepiracy was a large BitTorrent tracker site, launched back in 2006. In Sweden, it ranked as one of the most popular file-sharing services for the last several years. The site has been recently raided and brought down as a result of a coordinated operation of authorities from both Sweden and the Netherlands. Last week, the police of eastern Sweden have raided the house of a 20-year-old guy suspected of operating the online service in question. At the same time, the Netherlands’ authorities have seized Swepiracy’s servers located in that country. Swedish anti-piracy bureau Antipiratbyran announced that Swepiracy was trying to protect its operations by moving servers abroad, to the Netherlands. However, Swedish and Dutch police have coordinated their efforts and carried out raids in order to secure evidence of copyright violation. Besides, the anti-piracy outfit claimed that Swepiracy was known as one of the largest promoters of copyright violation content and before the start of this operation it had been warned to cease its unauthorized operations. Instead, the site’s operator tried to protect himself by moving the servers of the tracker into the Netherlands. Unfortunately, this didn’t help. Prosecutor Henrik Rasmusson has made a statement during the interview to the local newspaper. He explained that the young man was suspected of operating Swepiracy BitTorrent tracker. Rasmusson also pointed out that the founder of the website has made plenty of money by charging the tracker’s users in exchange to providing them access to illegal films. The police evaluated the amount he has earned equal to $150,000. After answering a number of questions to the police, the guy behind the BitTorrent tracker was released. However, he still remains under criminal suspicion of copyright violation. The police explained to the press that though the young man admitted that he had run the operations, he didn’t believe doing so had been a criminal act. Swepiracy wasn’t the first and only service targeted by Antipiratbyran: for example, SceneAccess, Theinternationals and Sparvar were also scoped by the anti-piracy outfit, which promises to take actions against them in the nearest future. Seems like today is a hard time for torrent trackers in Sweden…

  14. No more torrents=no changes anyhow Today marks the end of an era. Sort of. TPB will no longer give out links to .torrent files. The reason is simple: They're just a waste of space and our time. Instead we're giving you Magnet links. It's simpler for us and no more hassle for you. It's more resilient than .torrent files and it uses much less bandwidth for those who wants to mirror. Also, since the magnet links are just a hash, it's on every single torrent detail page - so noone knows that you actually downloaded a file or not. This means that noone can block torrent files without blocking data within a webpage. So far, few countries have implemented such harsh censorship tactics. Countries, particularily in EU, seems to moving towards total censorship so we do all we can to avoid our users ending up with less freedom. A lot of media has hyped that we're stopping with the torrent files. It's like saying that Ferrari is no longer sellings cars - they're just selling BETTER cars. As are we, we're giving you the best links there are! And to kinda-quote a bible, "Spilling seed is more severe then all sins, since he defiles his soul in this world and the world to come and he does not see the glory of the sharing." PS. you _can_ download individual files using magnets - just wait until the metadata is fetched from the network. It is worth it.

  16. Over the years you guys have asked us repeatedly to make t-shirts available but it has never quite seemed feasible. Until now. A dedicated user, Ramones77, has come forward to help make PTP t-shirts a reality! While Ramones77 and his company will be selling the shirts, all of the proceeds will be donated back to Pass the Popcorn. The design, seen above, comes courtesy of our very own trza. You can pre-order shirts from the first run now. The more pre-orders there are, the lower the production costs will be. That means more money will be able to go back into the site. So please, if you want a shirt order it during pre-ordering. This may be your only opportunity to get this incarnation of the shirt. Shirts will be available in sizes Medium through 2XL. The shirts will cost $20, shipping included, for any orders to the United States. It's an additional $5 to ship to Canada or Mexico and $10 to anywhere else in the world (bringing the prices to $25 and $30 respectively). A big thanks to Ramones77 for stepping up and dedicating his time and resources to run this, to trza for coming up with the design, and to all of you who support the site through these purchases. For instructions on ordering and discussion about the shirts, check out this thread. As always, if you'd like to donate but don't want a t-shirt you can find more information here.

We have a limited number of tv shows atm because, in this phase, we want to concentrate on fixing any bugs that you encounter and maximize your viewing experience.
  19. Spread the word - Posted 2012-02-28 We're very sorry for putting up a shutdown notice a few days ago. Our apologies to our entire crew of members who were saddened (and angry) at the sudden news, as well as the staff that were caught unawares. At this moment in time we can't give any details about what happened, but something got us rattled last week. We made a snap decision to shutdown. The wording of the shutdown message was poorly thought out. In retrospect, we should have waited a few days and put up this notice of a temporary downtime. We all felt really bad about it the day after. Now the hard work is over and we're ready to announce our plans: The Bibliotik.org website is secure and intact. We are searching for a new datacenter. If you have experience with good (or bad) datacenters, we would very much appreciate any suggestions. Send an email to [email protected]. For secure communication, you can encrypt using our public GPG key at the bottom of this page. Additionally, our coding staff have some modifications to attend to. Feel free to stop by our IRC chat channel (#bibliotik) at irc.brokensphere.net and express your support for their hard work.

  21. Where would we be without censorship? Last year we ran a piece on a mistake by the US authorities, which shut down 84,000 websites for alleged child pornography crimes. Ironically enough, this article is now censored by a porn outfit. Paper Street Cash, LLC, the proud owners of teamskeet.com included the piece in a list of 555 URLs that are allegedly infringing on their rights. The list was sent to Google and all URLs are now de-indexed by Google. A mistake of course, since the article in question is totally unrelated to teamskeet.com. We assume that some automated keyword searcher picked up our article, and that it was indeed a mistake, but conspiracy theories are not excluded. Luckily we’re in good company as a key SOPA/PIPA post from Techdirt was taken down as well (not to forget this exciting post from the Independent). Long live the DMCA!
  22. PWN is completing a major hardware upgrade. If you are reading this you are on the new server. We are now hosted on an i7 2600 server with 16GB DDR3. Please be patient if there are issues as we move the site to the new server. Known Issues: torrents.php is not listing torrents, ETA few hours - 1 day. Thanks PWN Staff
