  1. Actor Rick Rossovich has revealed that he included references to genre star Arnold Shwarzenegger in the iconic volleyball scene from action classic Top Gun. Tom Cruise stars in the film as a hotshot fighter pilot accepted into the titular Navy Fighter Weapons School in San Diego, California. Cruise led an ensemble roster that included Anthony Edwards, Tom Skerritt, Val Kilmer and Kelly McGillis. Inspired by the similarly titled articles in California magazine, the film was co-written by writing partners Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr., directed by Tony Scott and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson. Top Gun received generally mixed reviews from critics upon release, but was a box office smash, grossing over $356 million against its $15 million budget and brought home an Academy Award for Best Original Song for Berlin's "Take My Breath Away." Despite the mixed reviews, the film has lived on as a fan-favorite and generally considered one of Cruise's most iconic films and spawned multiple spoofs and parodies, including 1991's Hot Shots, and the long-awaited sequel Top Gun: Maverick. While chatting with Screen Rant for the 35th anniversary re-release of Top Gun in Dolby theaters, Rossovich revealed he included a nod to action genre legend Schwarzenegger during the volleyball scene. Having worked with the 73-year-old actor on The Terminator, Rossovich expressed having a great admiration for Schwarzenegger and their shared past and wanted to use the sequence to pay homage to the star. See what Rossovich had to say below: "I was kind of a bodybuilder as a kid, and Arnold Schwarzenegger was my idol growing up. I got to do Terminator with him and, beyond that, we did a couple other projects. So, that was really my homage to Arnold, and a throwback to when bodybuilding was kind of a holistic and beautiful thing." If to look at Rossovich's character, seen above, there are certainly plenty of similarities between he and Schwarzenegger's T-800. While everyone in the film sports the Ray-Ban Aviator sunglasses popular at the time, the bigger physique Rossovich displays and Slider's hairstyle are very reminiscent of the James Cameron and Gale Ann Hurd-created character. Even if it seems a bit more obscure to some, it's a nice nod from Rossovich to not only a fellow collaborator but an idol as well. For those looking at taking back to the skies with Cruise's Maverick and crew, this week will mark the return of Top Gun to theaters in celebration of its 35th anniversary and Top Gun Day. But if not feeling ready to return to the public venues just yet, viewers can also pick up the recently-released 4K UHD copy of the action classic on shelves now. Whichever path audiences choose, it's a good time to revisit the blockbuster ahead of Maverick's release on November 19.
  2. Zack Snyder has revealed an actual look at what John Stewart’s Green Lantern looked like in his cut Justice League scene. The character was played by actor Wayne T. Carr in the Snyder Cut reshoots, but Warner Bros. pushed Snyder to remove the character from the final cut to save him for future DC film projects. As a result, John Stewart was replaced by the Martian Manhunter, who addresses Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne at the end of the movie in his stead. John Stewart is one of DC’s most famous and popular heroes, but he’s yet to get a proper live-action debut. The character didn’t appear in the 2011 Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern movie, he hasn’t been brought to the DCEU (despite Snyder’s efforts), and he’s made no appearance in the Arrowverse either. A new Green Lantern movie is reportedly on the way as part of the DCEU, which is rumored to include Stewart, but details on that project have been scarce. The upcoming HBO Max Green Lantern series will feature several different iterations of the character including Guy Gardner and Alan Scott, but there’s been no confirmation of John Stewart so far. RELATED: HBO Max's Green Lantern Casting Explained: Where You've Seen Finn Wittrock At a recent digital Q&A event with Cinemark Playa Vista, Zack Snyder revealed a look at Wayne T. Carr’s in his Justice League Green Lantern costume. The image has been reshared on Twitter by Ishaan Sangha. In it, Carr’s John Stewart can be seen sporting the heroes famous colors and brandishing his Green Lantern ring. It’s not the highest-quality image, possibly due to Snyder not being allowed to release the actual scene, but it’s still in interesting look at what almost was. The silver lining for fans disappointed at John Stewart’s Justice League removal is that he may finally be coming to the big screen in a future film. Snyder has said the reason Warner Bros. wanted the character removed was for that express purpose. However, that also doesn’t guarantee that a John Stewart movie is coming any time soon. The DCEU has had a lot of bumps, twists and shakeups of late, and there’s been very little official movement on the new Green Lantern movie. It’s also possible that John Stewart could appear in the HBO Max Green Lantern show. He isn’t among the officially announced characters yet, but Warner Bros. has teased a lot more familiar faces joining the series who’ve yet to be named. If John Stewart is among them, that could help make up for his Justice League absence.
  3. Kevin Smith has been hard at work with his upcoming Netflix series, Masters of the Universe: Revelation, for which he recently got to see the first teaser trailer. The series is a reboot of the classic animated show, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, which focuses on He-Man and his cohorts fighting against the evil Skeletor. Smith is working as an executive producer on the new series, and it features the voices of Sarah Michelle Gellar, Mark Hamill, Lean Headey, Justin Long, and Kevin Conroy. The original series ran from 1983 to 1985 with 130 episodes, inspiring a generation of young kids while simultaneously promoting their toys. Now, fans of the original series, like Smith, are working to reintroduce the characters they loved to a whole new generation of fans. The show is slated to premiere later this year, and Smith has already been dropping details to entice fans. START NOW RELATED: Every New Show Releasing On Netflix In 2021 On one of Smith's recent podcasts, Fatman Beyond, he mentioned that he saw the first teaser trailer for the show and could not hold back his enthusiasm calling it, "phenomenal." He complimented Netflix's marketing department for their amazing work, as it inspired him to start watching the show again. While Smith was unsure of when fans would get a chance to see the trailer for themselves, he did mention that it was likely "fairly soon." Read what Smith said about seeing the first trailer below: But in other news, I saw the teaser trailer…which is f**king phenomenal. It’s about a minute and a half. They found a piece of music that is absolute [Chef’s kiss]… It’s wonderful. Like I know this f**king series in and out, and it made me go back and start watching it again. I was like ‘holy sh*t.’ That Netflix marketing department, they know what the fuck they're doing, man. [… ] It’s a great spot. So I can’t say when you’re going to see it, but if I’m seeing it now, then it’s coming fairly soon. Smith has already dropped several tidbits about the show, but no footage has been seen by the general public. With the tease of an impending first trailer, fans can hope to finally get a sense of the style and tone of the new series. While the show's synopsis is a bit vague on plot details, it promises the show is "focusing on unresolved stories of the iconic characters, picking up where they left off decades ago." Netflix's Masters of the Universe: Revelation isn't the only He-Man project in the works either. Noah Centineo recently departed the role in the live-action film that is currently in development. The film will be the first live-action He-Man project since Dolph Lundgren's portrayal in 1987's Masters of the Universe. While the film has been in a bit of development hell for years, fans can rest assured that Smith's Netflix series is not facing those same hurdles. Masters of the Universe: Revelation is nearing completion, and whether it will tie into Netflix's She-Ra and the Princess of Power is still unclear, but fans will find out when the show debuts later this year.
  4. Director James Gunn has confirmed that the soundtrack for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has already been finished. The first Guardians of the Galaxy movie hit theaters in August 2014, with the second installment, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 following along in May 2017. Both movies, headed by Gunn, were huge hits for the MCU. The rag-tag group of misfits redeeming themselves as the Guardians of the Galaxy made for a first film that had just the right amount of action, humor, great music, and emotion. The second movie doubled the laughs with the increased emphasis on the comedic side of Dave Bautista's character, Drax, and baby Groot captured the hearts of the MCU fan base, while Peter Quill's discovery of his father was the perfect follow-up for the questions raised in the first film. Continue Scrolling To Keep ReadingClick the button below to start this article in quick view. START NOW Now, Gunn and the rest of the crew are gearing up for the third installment of the movie to premiere in May 2023. Originally, the movie was slated to release in 2020, but Gunn's firing (and subsequent rehiring) from the franchise, as well as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, led to the film's delay. Now, it will be released 6-years after the second movie premiered. While two more years of waiting may seem like a lifetime to Marvel fans, Gunn thinks Guardians of the Galaxy 3's release date is cutting it close. There are worlds to create, sets to build, takes to film, and, of course, awesome music to be chosen. RELATED: Every Upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe Movie Gunn confirmed on Twitter that the soundtrack is already finished for Guardians of the Galaxy 3. A follower commented on one of his Tweets, and inquired if he had started the soundtrack for the movie yet. Gunn responded and revealed that, not only has he started the soundtrack, but he has already finished it, while shooting of the film is slated to begin at the end of the year. Check out Gunn's Tweet below: Fans of the first movie will recall that the soundtrack was one of the highlights of the film. The soundtrack, dubbed Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1, features the songs on Quill's mixtape. It is a mixture of '60s and '70s hits that keep Quill grounded to Earth and embodies the memories of the mother he lost and the world he left behind. The tunes such as "Hooked on a Feeling," "I Want You Back," and "O-o-h Child," resonate with the viewers as well, fostering nostalgia for the past plus a feeling of connection and oneness with Quill. The soundtrack was the second best-selling soundtrack album in the US for 2014, right behind the soundtrack for Frozen, and was certified Platinum by the RIAA. When Guardians of the Galaxy 2 came around, it carried on the '60s and '70s groove of the first film, complimenting the movie beautifully and nabbing a certification of Gold from the RIAA. The announcement that Gunn has finished the soundtrack for Guardians of the Galaxy 3, will have fans in anticipation of which hits will make it to the movie. What made the soundtrack of Guardians of the Galaxy so special was that it was something different. Very few movies put that much effort into the music and manage to so perfectly meld the script and soundtrack into one to propel the movie forward. Gunn's musical direction was certainly something of a masterpiece, charging the movie full of emotion, nostalgia, and cultural reference, which only intensifies the anticipation for the third movie and the 'awesome mix' that will accompany it.
  5. Director Zack Snyder reveals that Warner Bros. only saw his finished cut of Justice League in 2019. The Snyder Cut premiered this March to largely positive reviews from critics and fans. Introduced as a narrative redo of the original Justice League film, many viewers appreciated Snyder’s deeper emotional exploration of the ensemble cast. It also received a significantly warmer welcome than the prior adaptation, which garnered a critical backlash for its under-baked plot and rushed storyline. Upon its initial release in 2017, DCEU fans quickly launched a Twitter campaign calling for Snyder to share his version of the film. Continue Scrolling To Keep ReadingClick the button below to start this article in quick view. START NOW The much-maligned 2017 Justice League underwent multiple production issues during its shoot. Midway through filming, Snyder had to leave the project due to a family tragedy and was soon replaced by Joss Whedon. He heavily modified much of the script and called for a series of reshoots that lightened the overall tone of the movie. The significant retooling of the film left many fans dismayed and impatient to find out what could have been under Snyder’s direction. During this time, the cast and crew joined the petition urging Warner Bros. to release the Snyder Cut. The online fervor gained slow but steady traction and, eventually, the production company agreed to finance Snyder’s vision. RELATED:Why The Zack Snyder's Justice League Reviews Are So Positive While speaking to Vanity Fair, Snyder described the overall process of meeting with Warner Bros. He broke down how his first few conversations went with them. Read what Snyder recalled below: I said, ‘Well, can I at least come in and tell you what I think the best version of this would be?’ And so I went in and just kind of pitched them on finishing the movie correctly and ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ and how we could market it and what it would mean to the fans and all that. And then they came over to my house and watched it—no one had ever seen this version of the movie. They were like, ‘Okay, we’re inclined to do it.’ While Snyder’s conception of the film ultimately reached fruition, he revealed that there was some back-and-forth about how to proceed. Initially, Warner Bros. suggested releasing a raw, unfinished cut of the film on HBO Max for fans. Snyder quickly rejected the idea, because he knew that it would disappoint viewers hoping for an authentic adaptation of his original script. He also acknowledged that, without VFX or color grading, much of the footage would look “horrible.” As a result, he pitched Warner Bros. his own proposal for the new cut. Overall, Snyder’s journey to showcase his artistic rendering of the beloved group of DCEU superheroes was, in the end, a success story. Although boasting a four-hour runtime, Zack Snyder’s Justice League remains a worthy and acclaimed event for DC fans. The stars of the film similarly thanked Snyder for returning to set with a thoughtful and nuanced narrative for their individual characters. With passion, hard work, and a heavy dose of luck, Snyder achieved the kind of cinematic redemption that many storytellers in Hollywood dream of accomplishing.
  6. The first look at Camila Cabello and Nicholas Galitzine in the new revival of Cinderella has just been released. The film, which was directed by Pitch Perfect director, Kay Cannon, will premiere on Amazon Prime in September. The film also stars Billy Porter, Idina Menzel, Pierce Brosnan, and Minnie Driver. Cannon’s Cinderella, a remake of the classic fairytale, is the second modern straightforward Cinderella remake of the past few years, following the 2015 Disney adaptation. This version, which gives story credit to James Corden who was also a producer on the film, promises to be a more refreshed telling of the tale audiences have come to know and love. The film, which was made by Sony’s Columbia Pictures, was originally scheduled to release in February of this year, but due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it was delayed. Weeks ago, it was announced that the film had been bought by Amazon Studios. Continue Scrolling To Keep ReadingClick the button below to start this article in quick view. START NOW RELATED:How Cinderella Broke A Common Disney Princess Trope In a press release from Amazon, which was accompanied by some stills of the film, it was announced that Cinderella will launch worldwide in September, exclusively on Amazon. In one photo, Cabello can be seen as Cinderella before her transformation. The other still, a first look at Camila Cabello and Nicholas Galitzine (who portrays Prince Robert) together, shows the two likely dancing at the ball. The press release also promised a more contemporary retelling—partially evidenced by Billy Porter’s "fairy godmother” role becoming that of “Fab G”— imbued with a new and more empowering perspective. Read the statement from Amazon Studios Head, Jennifer Salke, and check out the new photos below: Cinderella is a classic we all know and love, but this time with a modern unique twist and starring the sensational Camila Cabello and an all-star cast. Producer James Corden and the filmmaking team have taken this beloved fairytale and revamped it with a fresh, empowering perspective that will resonate with audiences and families around the world. We couldn't be more excited for our global customers to sing and dance along to director Kay Cannon's reimagination of this classic story," said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios. The press release also provided insight into the music of the film. Seeing as though the film is not a Disney remake of the popular 1950 animated film, the classic songs associated with Cinderella were, of course, not included. Instead, the announcement revealed that the stars will be covering hit songs by “some of the top-selling musical artists of all time.” Additionally, the film will feature original songs by Broadway starlet, Idina Menzel, and Cabello, a Grammy nominated singer-songwriter. A fresh take on classic tales is something of a trend in today’s television and film world, and not to everyone’s enjoyment. However, when redone to provide more diversity (though perhaps not as diverse as the 1997 adaptation of Roger and Hammerstein’s Cinderella) and re-contextualize some of the more traditional tropes, these new and updated films can be very important. While not all fans are excited for their favorites to potentially be spoiled or flooded with superfluous canon content, it is best to keep in mind that these films are often not for the original fans as much as they are for a new generation. And the new generation could definitely do with a Latina Cinderella, a Black and LGBT role model, and more empowering themes.
  7. Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins producer admits the Hasbro Cinematic Universe writers room didn't work out. In the wake of the success of 2007's Transformers, Hasbro started developing a number of their properties into feature films, including Battleship, Jem and the Holograms, and notably, G.I. Joe with two feature films released in 2009 and 2013. Yet development on a third film stalled and the studio opted to go with a film based on a single character in an attempt to do a prequel and reboot of the franchise similar to Bumblebee in 2018. In 2015, in the midst of the growing success of the MCU, the early stages of the DCEU, Legendary Pictures announcing they were building a MonsterVerse, and Universal's plans to start The Dark Universe, Hasbro decided they wanted to build a universe of their own. They made a deal with Paramount Pictures to develop a universe based on five of their properties; G.I. Joe, Micronauts, Rom, M.A.S.K., and Visionaries. Then in 2016, Hasbro assembled a writer's room to create a shared universe that included many in-demand talents like Captain Marvel's Nicole Perlmann, Black Panther's Joe Robert Cole, Star Trek Picard's Michael Chabon, and Spider-Man: Homecoming's John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, just to name a few. Continue Scrolling To Keep ReadingClick the button below to start this article in quick view. START NOW RELATED: Why G.I. Joe Needs The Transformers However, it appears the work the writers room came up with didn't pan out well, and the state of a potential Hasbro Cinematic Universe might be over. In an interview with EW, covering the first look at Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, Lorenzo di Bonaventura who has been a producer on all the G.I. Joe and Transformers films, spoke about how the room seemed like a good idea but didn't generate much for them. So much so, that the upcoming Snake Eyes film didn't even come from the writer's room. Bonaventure said, "Really didn't generate much for us...My opinion of that room was that never really worked very well unfortunately. It was a good idea." While the five properties were announced to be in development, outside of G.I. Joe, none of the other properties have made much headway. Dean DeBlois, director of the How To Train Your Dragon trilogy, was hired to direct Micronauts but the film was removed from Paramount's release schedule. M.A.S.K. secured Straight Outta Compton director, F. Gary Gray, back in 2018 and Bad Boy's For Life writer, Chris Bremner, was hired to write the script in 2020. No word has been made on Rom or Visionaries. In fact, Hasbro and Paramount have done more work for other standalone properties like the Transformers franchise and the upcoming Dungeons and Dragons film directed by the writers room's own John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein. There was a certain amount of sense on Hasbro's part to combine their various properties together, making them stronger together to deepen their respective mythologies. The cinematic universe landscape has changed quite a bit since 2016. While the MCU is still going strong, the many others have had to readjust plans. The DCEU is a vastly different place, moving away from director Zack Snyder and more towards a multiverse platform. The Mummy killed Universal's plans for the Dark Universe, instead opting for a smaller budget and non-connected reimagining of their various characters, like 2020's Invisible Man. The MonsterVerse seemed to be on its way out after the disappointing box-office of Godzilla: King of the Monsters but now may get a second shot of life due to the success of Godzilla vs. Kong. Hasbro has now focused on strengthening their core brands by reimagining them in a variety of ways, including a new Transformers film and Snake Eyes: G.I Joe Origins
  8. Slider actor, Rick Rossovich, shares what happened to his character after the events of Top Gun. The long-awaited sequel to the classic film would have been released already if it wasn’t due to various delays, some COVID-related and some due to the complexity of the flight sequences. Top Gun: Maverick, set to debut this fall, will see the return of a few characters from the original, though a Slider cameo is currently up in the air. Released in 1986, the classic flight film starred Tom Cruise as the young and cocky, yet likable naval aviator, Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. While Top Gun debuted to a mixed response from critics, it was universally praised for its intense aerial action and performances. The film also had an emotional through-line that saw the death of Maverick’s partner, Goose (Anthony Edwards), for which he felt responsible. Top Gun also starred Val Kilmer as the antagonist, Iceman, and Rick Rossovich as his co-pilot, Slider, both of whom appear in the film’s memorable shirtless beach volleyball scene. START NOW RELATED:Top Gun: Why Maverick Needs Iceman Now, Rossovich is sharing what happened to Slider after the events of Top Gun. While the long-awaited sequel will see the return of Cruise as Maverick and Kilmer as Iceman, it is unclear whether or not Slider will make an appearance in Top Gun: Maverick. In an interview with Screen Rant ahead of Top Gun's 35th-anniversary rerelease in Dolby theaters, Rossovich revealed where Slider’s aviation career took him after Top Gun: He became a commercial pilot, and he was flying LAX to Heathrow on a 747 for most of the time. Then he went to the Dreamliners. I think he's had a great life, and he's really enjoyed the memories. Though Slider’s time as a commercial pilot will unlikely be explored in the sequel, Rossovich could appear in a brief cameo as Slider. He recently played coy when asked about a possible appearance in Top Gun: Maverick, saying that Slider “might show up in the sequel.” Since Rossovich would neither confirm nor deny a Slider cameo, fans will have to wait and see. Since Iceman will be returning, it isn't a stretch to think his former co-pilot will as well. Regarding Ron "Slider" Kerner’s life after Top Gun, it is nice to hear the character is likely living a relatively peaceful life as a commercial pilot. It will be also interesting to see if Rossovich shows up for a Top Gun: Maverick cameo or if Slider’s storyline will be mentioned. Or maybe Rossovich is just having a little fun with his character's backstory.
  9. Bong Joon-ho is set to direct one of his next projects, which will be a Korean animated film. The three time Oscar-winning writer and director has become a hot commodity after releasing his dark comedy thriller, Parasite, which became the first film not in the English language to win Best Picture, while also winning Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film. Since then, he has been working on multiple projects, including an HBO six-part limited series that is based on the Best Picture winner, also titled Parasite, with Adam McKay, and two upcoming features. One will be in English and one in Korean. Deadline now reports from the Yonhap News Agency, that the filmmaker's upcoming project will be a Korean adventure animation about humans and deep-sea creatures. It has been reported that Bong Joon-ho had completed the script a few months prior and that the movie would contain elements of action and horror taking place in Seoul. Bong has been working on the development of the animated film since 2018, when Parasite was in pre-production. RELATED: Parasite's Black & White Version Is Like Watching A Different Movie The animated film will be a first for Bong, but the director has jumped into similar terrains with his monster film, The Host, back in 2006, that also explored the relationship between humans and a sea creature in a vicious and adversarial way. After the massive success of Parasite, fans have been patiently waiting for more details about Bong's next projects and this announcement is certainly a change in genre, which has been a trademark for the director. Plot details about the animated film have yet to be released, but Bong's next directorial work is very intriguing and will be much anticipated.
  10. Army of the Dead star Dave Bautista has revealed that he turned down an offer to star in the Fast & Furious franchise in an effort to pitch a Gears of War film adaptation. The Fast & Furious franchise began in 2001 with the Vin Diesel and Paul Walker-led box office hit that has since gone on to spawn eight sequels and one spin-off with multiple other titles in the works. The franchise has grossed nearly $6 billion at the box office. The next film in the series, F9: The Fast Saga, is set to finally hit theaters on June 25 after numerous relay delays due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The story takes place on the Earth-like planet of Sera and centers on the Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG) as they take on various threats to humanity on the planet, namely the alien race known as the Locust Horde. The original trilogy centered on Marcus Fenix and his squad in their battles while the fourth and fifth installments shifted the focus to Marcus' son J.D. and Outsider Kate Diaz. RELATED: Summer Movies 2021: Everything Coming To Theaters (When They're Open) In an interview with Collider for the Zack Snyder zombie heist thriller, Bautista reflected back to his journey attempting to get the role of Bane in a Warner Bros. Batman film. Noting the studio wasn't interested in discussing the prospect, Bautista looked back to the time a similar situation happened with him and Universal Pictures for the Fast & Furious franchise. Read what Bautista had to say below: "I don’t make any pretense about it. I had a chance to get a meeting at WB, they were talking to me about this and that and I said 'hey, let’s talk about Bane.' That happened to me one other time in my career. They wanted to talk to me about Fast and the Furious, and I said 'I’m not interested, let’s talk about [Gears of War character] Marcus Fenix'..." A film adaptation of Gears of War has been long in the works across multiple studios, with the rights currently sitting at Universal and the last word coming in summer 2019 when it was confirmed the story wouldn't be set in the same universe as the games. If you look at the timeline of its arrival at Universal, it would seem the studio was looking to the Guardians of the Galaxy star for a role in either the eighth or ninth mainline Fast & Furious installments or the Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham-led spinoff Hobbs & Shaw. With roles such as Dom's brother in F9 and a whole family of Hobbs' in the spinoff, there was certainly a range of strong characters fans could've seen Bautista take on in the franchise. That being said, a Gears of War film seems even better suited to have Bautista lead the way. With a bigger build reminiscent of Marcus, an ability to tap into some serious dramatic territory, action hero aesthetics, and sly comedic delivery, the Drax actor is the right fit to bring Epic Games' franchise to life on the screen. Even if he may be absent from the film, audiences can look forward to the return of the Fast & Furious franchise with the impending theatrical arrival of F9.
  11. The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard director Patrick Hughes has teased one of the new action sequences from the upcoming sequel. After forming an uneasy bond with the notorious hitman Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson) in the 2017 predecessor, Michael Bryce (Ryan Reynolds) finds his path crossed again by Darius and his wife, Sonia Kincaid (Salma Hayek), who enlists his help to rescue Darius and stop Antonio Banderas' mobster villain. The ensemble cast for the film will also include Richard E. Grant, Frank Grillo, Morgan Freeman, and Tom Hopper. Though looking to capitalize on the box office success of its predecessor, Lionsgate saw Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard run into a few speed bumps in both its production and road to release due to the global pandemic. While post-production was nearly complete when the quarantine was put into effect, the shutdown saw it slightly hampered as the crew had to work from home to finish the film up. On top of that, the film was initially delayed by a full year from its original August 2020 release date as theaters remained closed, though was bumped up by two months as vaccines rolled out and theatrical releases became more viable options for studios. START NOW RELATED: Every 2020 Comedy Movie That Should Have Released By Now In an interview with Collider to discuss the action-comedy sequel, Hughes was asked about the set pieces audiences can expect in the film and which he's looking forward to most. Though keeping mum on exact details of the sequence, the director teased a pulse-pounding moment in which Jackson and Reynolds' characters are caught up in a speedboat chase. Read what Hughes had to say below: "There's an action sequence where Ryan Reynolds recruits two mysterious figures Gary and Johann for a dangerous speedboat chase. That’s the one I am most excited for audiences to see. To say any more would spoil it." Of the multiple action sequences teased in the first two trailers for the sequel, the speedboat chase does look like one of its biggest and most explosive. It would also mark the second time the filmmaker has taken his heroes to the water after Samuel L. Jackson's brief race through the canals of The Hague. Where that sequence saw Bryce on land and Darius on water, it should be interesting to see what chaos they can cause together out in the water, especially when paired with two law enforcement-type figures. One of the biggest rules for sequels in the action genre is to always try and go bigger and bolder than what came before. With large boats exploding, cyberterrorists waging large-scale attacks on Europe, and the future of the Kincaid bloodline at risk, it's safe to say Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard is certainly trying its best to clear the entertaining bar set by its predecessor. For now, audiences will have to wait until the film arrives in theaters on June 16 to see if it can live up to the original.
  12. Margot Robbie gives a frank update about the status of Birds of Prey 2. After the actresses' take on Harley Quinn became one of the most popular aspects of 2016's Suicide Squad, Warner Bros. put a number of different Harley Quinn-centric projects in development. Birds of Prey, released last year, was the one that ultimately won out. Directed by Cathy Yan, the film saw Harley team up with other DC female characters Huntress, Black Canary, Renee Montoya, and Cassandra Cain as they came to blows with Roman Sionis. Birds of Prey earned positive reviews upon its release, with critics praising its performances, action, and gleefully chaotic take on the genre. However, that word-of-mouth didn't translate into strong ticket sales (and Birds of Prey came out a month before the pandemic started). The R-rated film grossed just $33 million in its opening weekend and ended its theatrical run with $201.8 million worldwide against an $84.5 million production budget. That performance led to some considering it to be a misfire, which could be why Birds of Prey 2 never entered development. And based on Robbie's latest comments, it doesn't sound like a sequel is in the works. Continue Scrolling To Keep ReadingClick the button below to start this article in quick view. START NOW RELATED:The Suicide Squad: Every Change To Harley Quinn From 2016 & Birds Of Prey Speaking with Den of Geek to promote The Suicide Squad, Robbie was asked about the future of Birds of Prey. She reiterated previous comments she made last year, stating there's no Birds of Prey 2 in the pipeline: “I don’t know if that is on the horizon anytime soon. I don’t think it’s a no. But no, there’s no sequel in the works that I’m aware of at this stage.” Robbie was a producer on Birds of Prey, so it stands reason to believe if WB was moving forward on a sequel, she'd be privy to the conversations. Actors in big franchises can typically be the last to know about upcoming projects, but Robbie's level of involvement in Birds of Prey means she'd probably be actively involved in putting it together. WB does have a full slate of DC films coming out through 2023, including sequels to hits Aquaman and Shazam, as well as Matt Reeves' The Batman. In the immediate future, there isn't really room for Birds of Prey 2 in the DC lineup, but perhaps it will be revisited at some point down the line. Harley Quinn is a very popular character and she should be a scene-stealer in The Suicide Squad. Given how beloved Robbie's performances are, the studio should want to keep her around. Even though Birds of Prey wasn't a massive box office hit, its budget was far more moderate than a typical comic book adaptation. That might make it easier for a sequel to get the green light, as it wouldn't need to break the bank in order to turn a profit. Compared to other DC titles, Birds of Prey may not have as much widespread appeal (with the R rating limiting its potential audience), but the movie still has a loyal fan base that would like to see Harley's adventures with her friends continue. Especially if The Suicide Squad is well-received, there might be a resurgence in Birds of Prey 2 interest.
  13. A The Conjuring 3 image from IMAX shows the Warrens dealing with a demonically possessed child. The franchise began in 2013 with The Conjuring, which starred Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga in their first appearances as paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren. Directed by James Wan, the horror film was met with widespread critical acclaim, enjoyed considerable commercial success, and even spawned a franchise. Annabelle was released a year later and then followed up with two sequels in 2017 and 2019. Spinoffs, The Nun and The Curse of La Llorona, are also set in The Conjuring universe. START NOW Wan returned for a sequel to The Conjuring in 2016, which centered on the 1977 Enfield poltergeist case in London, while also briefly touching on the Amityville murders. The third film in the series, subtitled The Devil Made Me Do It, will chronicle the Warrens’ darkest case yet. Though Wan bowed out of the franchise in favor of Michael Chaves, Wilson and Farmiga will both return for the threequel. The Conjuring 3 will find the duo investigating the case of a man who killed his landlord and is claiming demonic possession as a defense (based on the actual trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson in 1981 who was the first suspect ever to use such a defense). RELATED:Michael Chaves Interview: The Conjuring 3 During the Warrens’ investigation, they will also have to contend with another demonic possession, which an image from the film provides a look at. The boy’s name is David Glatzel (Julian Hilliard), who first plays host to the demon that is then passed onto Arne (Ruairi O'Connor). Demonologists Ed and Lorraine look on as the demonically possessed child bends backward. Check out the exclusive image from IMAX below: While The Conjuring 3 trailer hinted at this being the Warrens’ most sinister case yet, this image gives a better idea of just what they will be dealing with. Lorraine seems to be increasingly affected by each case, and with the possibility of a demonic possession looming, The Devil Made Me Do It may change her, and The Conjuring franchise overall, for good. Thus far, The Conjuring universe has been tremendously successful, currently sitting at the second highest-grossing horror franchise ever, behind Godzilla. While James Wan not directing the third film may cause some trepidation for fans, he did have a hand in crafting the story and oversaw the project as a producer. After numerous delays, The Conjuring 3 will see a simultaneous release in theaters and on HBO Max on June 4.
  14. Upcoming Disney releases Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Free Guy will have exclusive theatrical runs, and then arrive on streaming 45 days later. Both Shang-Chi and Free Guy are among the many movies that have struggled to find a foothold amid the coronavirus pandemic, each suffering multiple release date delays since last year. Shang-Chi will be the second movie in the MCU's Phase 4 and introduces its first lead Asian hero on the big screen. Free Guy, meanwhile, is an original sci-fi adventure starring Ryan Reynolds as an NPC in a video game. With the pandemic still leaving the safety of movie theaters up in the air, studios have been forced to adopt some creative solutions when it comes to their biggest releases. In most cases, this involves some kind of streaming release. Disney has continued to utilize its Premier Access program on Disney+ by giving movies like Raya and the Last Dragon and Black Widow day and date releases in theaters and on streaming. It has also sent the likes of Soul and Luca to Disney+ without the Premier Access banner. As we look further in the year, though, the question then becomes: How long will streaming be necessary? Continue Scrolling To Keep ReadingClick the button below to start this article in quick view. START NOW RELATED: When Is Shang-Chi Set In The MCU Timeline? During Thursday's second quarter earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Chapek confirmed both Shang-Chi and Free Guy will have exclusive theatrical releases later this year. Those will last for 45 days, and then they can become available on streaming. Neither film was given a concrete streaming date. Free Guy will debut in theaters on August 13, while Shang-Chi premieres on September 3. Earlier on Thursday, Disney announced Jungle Cruise will be available via Disney+'s Premier Access in July. That Free Guy will avoid that fate while releasing only a few weeks later indicates Disney is feeling optimistic about the state of moviegoing later in the year. As more people get vaccinated and certain areas lift their restrictions, theaters have begun to make a gradual comeback. However, most are still operating at a lower capacity, and Disney is hardly the only studio to fall back on streaming to combat potential losses. Paramount is adopting a similar strategy, with big movies like A Quiet Place Part II and Mission: Impossible 7 getting 45-day exclusive theatrical runs. There was a time when movies were expected to play in theaters for months before they could become available at home, but the pandemic has led to a drastic shortening of that window. As strange as it all seems, it's at least comforting to know Shang-Chi and Free Guy will get the theatrical releases they deserve. Both promise to be big screen spectacles, and they should be treated as such. Whether audiences will be ready for them remains to be seen, but Disney appears to feel optimistic about their chances.
  15. Peacock confirms Psych 3: This Is Gus is officially happening and reveals the first story details. Though beloved USA series Psych came to an end in 2014, it's still enjoying a longer lifespan courtesy of multiple television movies. The show itself followed best friends Shawn Spencer (James Roday Rodriguez) and Burton "Gus" Guster (DulĂŠ Hill) as they solved numerous mysteries on behalf of the Santa Barbara Police Department. Shawn used his incredible observation skills to pass himself off as a psychic, which allowed him to get involved with cases despite the constant irritation of those on the force. Psych 2: Lassie Come Home continued Shawn and Gus' story and featured the triumphant return of Timothy Omundson's Carlton Lassiter, who suffered a stroke just ahead of the first movie's production. At the time of Psych 2's premiere, there was some talk of a third movie. Up until now, however, there was no guarantee that it would ever happen. RELATED: Psych 3 Can Resolve A Season 8 Mystery By Bringing Back Pierre Despereaux According to TVLine, Peacock has officially given the greenlight to Psych 3: This Is Gus. Much like how the second film put Lassie in the title and gave him a special focus, the threequel looks to do the same with Hill's Gus. Psych 3: This Is Gus will pick up on the eve of "Groomzilla" Gus' shotgun wedding to fiancĂŠe Selene (Jazmyn Simon) and the birth of their child, with Shawn and Gus embarking on a mission to find Selene's estranged husband. Peacock confirmed the news on social media with a video spotlighting fans' requests to see a third Psych movie, which you can see down below. Production on Psych 3: This Is Gus is expected to begin this summer in Vancouver. Aside from Shawn and Gus' newest escapades, the film will see Lassie grappling with the future of his career, meaning Omundson will be back alongside Rodriguez and Hill. Additionally, Maggie Lawson (Juliet O'Hara), Kirsten Nelson (Karen Vick), and Corbin Bernsen (Henry Spencer) will return for Psych 3: This Is Gus. With filming slated to take place later this year, Psych 3: This Is Gus could premiere on Peacock early next year. That Psych has managed to return for not one but three movies shows just how beloved the series is. Shawn and Gus are such an entertaining pair that it's hard to resist tuning in for more adventures with them, and it's nice to know the rest of the main cast will still be involved. Whether other figures from the show's past could return, but fans should perhaps brace for surprises After all, Psych 2: Lassie Come Home had plenty of cameos, so it stands to reason the third movie will as well. 16. Norman Lloyd, known for his collaborations with directors like Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles, and Charlie Chaplin, passed away in his Los Angeles home at the age of 106. Lloyd got his big start in cinema after being hand-picked by Alfred Hitchcock to play Frank Fry in the 1942 film Saboteur, in which a man goes on the run after being falsely accused of sabotage. Before that, Lloyd had been working as a cast member with the theater company Mercury Theater, which was co-run by Welles. Lloyd would go on to appear in multiple films and TV shows, including Dead Poet's Society, Age of Innocence, and TV medical drama St. Elsewhere, which ran from 1982-1988. Over the course of his multi-decade career, Lloyd not only acted in film, TV, and theater, but also went on to become a prolific television producer and director. Between the years 1960 and 1985, he accumulated 39 producing credits for TV series and movies such as The Alfred Hitchcock Hour and Journey to the Unknown. Lloyd worked in film as late as 2015, when at the age of 100 he played Norman in the romantic comedy Trainwreck, starring Amy Schumer and Bill Hader. RELATED: Mank: Why Orson Welles Shares Credit On Citizen Kane Lloyd's son, Michael Lloyd, announced that in the early morning of Tuesday, May 11, Lloyd died peacefully in his sleep. This was also confirmed to Variety by Lloyd's friend, producer Dean Hargrove, though neither gave a cause of death. In confirming Lloyd's death, Hargrove said of his later years: "His third act was really the best time of his life." Lloyd became lovingly known as a sort of living history of old Hollywood, traveling the country for speaking engagements and historical Hollywood Retrospectives to speak about his experiences with the many household names with which he brushed elbows over the course of his career. Lloyd was born in 1914 and grew up in New York. By the age of 9, he became a professional performer, appearing in vaudeville acts and at women's clubs. After graduating high school at the age of 15, Lloyd attended New York University. At 17, he became an apprentice at Civic Repertory Theatre in New York City before eventually working for Mercury Theater. Lloyd was then given the chance to have a role in Citizen Kane, which would go on to become one of the most famous films of all time, but turned it down for financial reasons as the film was not a sure success. Despite the fact that Lloyd would never go on to be a household name like some of his counterparts, he had an extremely illustrious career. This theme was explored in the documentary Who is Norman Lloyd, which premiered in 2007 to favorable reviews. Additionally, Lloyd will be remembered each day on his birthday, November 8, in Los Angeles, as in 2015 the Los Angeles City Council proclaimed that the day would be known as "Norman Lloyd Day."
  17. The director of Killer Klowns From Outer Space, Stephen Chiodo, says he has ideas for three new films in the franchise. The Chiodo Brothers' Killer Klowns From Outer Space was released in 1988 and has gained a cult following in the past 30+ years. Grant Cramer and Suzanne Snyder star in the horror movie as Mike Tobacco and Debbie Stone, two residents of Crescent Cove who are forced to fight off aliens who appear as terrifying clowns. Killer Klowns From Outer Space 2, once called The Return of the Killer Klowns from Outer Space in 3D, has been stuck in development hell for years. Charles, Stephen, and Edward Chiodo have remained optimistic to continue the franchise, with Killer Klowns From Outer Space almost being turned into a TV show at one point and a sequel almost happening at Syfy. Neither ended up happening after Disney acquired 20th Century Fox and squashed potential plans for a sequel. Continue Scrolling To Keep ReadingClick the button below to start this article in quick view. START NOW RELATED:Killer Klowns From Outer Space: How Alien Xmas Could Contain A Sequel Clue Despite the odds of Killer Klowns from Outer Space 2 being made look grim, Chiodo has a lot of ideas if Disney were to ever move forward on the sequel. While speaking on the Slasher Radio Podcast (via MovieWeb), Stephen Chiodo gave a few story details about the potential trilogy he had planned, saying that it would focus on the previous characters dealing with the aftermath of the alien invasion. Chiodo also revealed that when the sequel was in development at Syfy, they were only offering a budget of $2 million, which was the same amount they had for the original in the ‘80s. Chiodo’s comments on Killer Klowns From Outer Space 2 can be read below. "There was a deal... MGM controls the rights... and they went to SYFY. They did Critters, and you saw what that turned out to be like. But they wanted to do Klowns for like two million [dollars]. And we don't want to do that... we did it for two million back in the '80s. So we didn't want to do it. And even MGM didn't want to do it... they said it was a more valuable property than just signing off for that little money." "We have this whole long trilogy - something we call a trilogy in four parts because we include the original - a TV series for cable [or] streaming. And it follows the adventures of all the characters as they go through their lives, crushed after the first invasion. It would make a great mini-series. So we're constantly selling that for people who are interested." With Hollywood reviving multiple nostalgic horror movies like 2018’s Halloween, now seems like the perfect time for a sequel. A lot of horror movies today rely on CGI to shock audiences, while Killer Klowns From Outer Space has been praised for its use of wacky practical effects. Given the Chiodos’ involvement, the sequel would no doubt use practical effects again, which would please long-time fans and add something fresh to the horror genre. Releasing Killer Klowns in Outer Space 2 in theaters would be a risk, especially now with the industry recovering from the coronavirus pandemic, but it could be a hit on streaming. Unfortunately, that seems unlikely to happen with Disney in control of the franchise. Disney+ is planning to release 100+ titles a year and Disney+’s Star has been rolled out in a few countries with more mature content, but Killer Klowns From Outer Space 2 seems like too much of a risk for Disney. As Chiodo mentioned in the podcast, Hollywood doesn’t bother with cult films, especially if the original didn’t do well at the box office. If Disney were to green-light a sequel, they would more than likely wait to see how Killer Klowns From Outer Space 2 performs before they started developing Parts 3 and 4. Regardless, Chiodo clearly has plenty of ideas for the Killer Klowns From Outer Space franchise and is keeping hope alive for a sequel.
  18. Star Henry Czerny has opened up about where his character Eugene Kittridge has been and what he's been doing in the 25 years between the original Mission: Impossible and the in-production Mission: Impossible 7. Plot details are currently unknown on the next Tom Cruise-led outing, though it has been revealed that Esai Morales will be Mission: Impossible 7's villain opposite IMF legend Ethan Hunt. Alongside Cruise, Czerny, and Morales, the ensemble cast for the film will include returning actors Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, and Angela Bassett. Production on the film was originally announced to be back-to-back with the eighth installment in the series, with Christopher McQuarrie returning to write and direct both entries. However, due to changing release schedules stemming from the global pandemic, Paramount elected to halt Mission: Impossible 7 and 8's back-to-back plans and instead focus on the current chapter before pressing on with the next. After assembling an all-star cast of franchise newcomers including Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, Rob Delaney, Charles Parnell, Indira Varma, Mark Gatiss, and Cary Elwes, filming has gone on from February 2020 to this April. Continue Scrolling To Keep ReadingClick the button below to start this article in quick view. START NOW RELATED: Mission: Impossible 7 - What Ethan's Old IMF Boss Returning Means While chatting with /Film for the upcoming 25th anniversary of the franchise's inaugural outing, Czerny revealed that when McQuarrie called him up to return to the role of Kittridge, the filmmaker didn't have an exact plan of what to do with the character. Wanting to have those details to help better shape his performance, Czerny was largely left to his own devices on putting the backstory together for the time gap. He also teased the new relationship between Kittridge and Ethan after the events of the first Mission: Impossible film. I decided that he’d been to all the agencies on some level or other, had a good idea now of how the game is played and what his place is in this mechanism of national intelligence. I figured he’d been through all of them at this point, and he’d been schooled by Ethan 25 years ago. He’s known Ethan, he’s known he’s done these things, and he knows that Ethan is someone to go to, but he also feels that it’s not ever good to have one person controlling anything...There’s a respect, but at the same time, it’s like fire. We need fire because we’ve got to cook, but you got to be careful with it. If you let fire do what it wants, you’re in trouble. The relationship that they had in the first one, Ethan schooling Kittridge on who the mole really was and catching the mole, was the springboard to 25 years of Kittridge going through different agencies so he wouldn’t be schooled again. With 25 years between Mission: Impossible 7 and the debut installment in the action franchise, there's certainly been a number of shifts in the universe's government. The position of IMF director and secretary has changed hands countless times across the films from Kittridge to Anthony Hopkins' Swanbeck to Laurence Fishburne's Brassel and Alec Baldwin's Hunley. Given the latter had made his jump from the CIA to the IMF after Rogue Nation, it makes total sense for Kittridge to have elected to move away from his original agency in order to start afresh after being made to look like a fool by Ethan in the original film. As McQuarrie is now acting as the narrative mastermind behind the M:I franchise, it might seem a little hard to believe he wouldn't have a better plan for Kittridge's return to the Mission: Impossible series. But with him originally developing back-to-back sequels and assembling a large ensemble cast for the first sequel, it either points to the discussions for Czerny's return happening early in the film's development or suggests his role will be a smaller part of the larger puzzle. For now, audiences will have to wait to see what comes when Mission: Impossible 7 hits theaters on May 27, 2022.
  19. Tom Cruise shares a Top Gun: Maverick behind-the-scenes image honoring the original movie. The long-awaited sequel to the classic 1986 film was originally scheduled for a release about two years ago. It was initially postponed to give production more time to choreograph the film's complex flight sequences. But then, COVID-19 hit and the film faced further delays due to the pandemic. The blockbuster is currently scheduled for a November 19th release with the option to stream on Paramount+ 45 days after its theatrical debut. Inspired by a magazine article titled "Top Guns," the classic flight film debuted in 1986 to a mixed critical response, though there was plenty of praise to go around for its aerial stunts and performance from Cruise. Top Gun quickly became a box office phenomenon and eventually the highest-grossing film of the year, raking in $353 million against a measly $15 million production budget. Starring as the cocky yet likable protagonist Pete Mitchell with the now-iconic call sign Maverick, Top Gun helped elevate Cruise into the exemplary action star he is known as today. This is, of course, aside from the film’s epic aerial stunts and jaw-dropping flight sequences, which are wholly expected. Top Gun was released in the United States on May 16, 1986, which begs the question of why the official day commemorating the film is held three days earlier on May 13th. Well, according to the website, it was intended for Top Gun Day to be observed on the day the film was released, but an error in a graphic read May 13 and it was too late to correct the mistake since word was already out. Regardless of when this special day is held, fans are likely excited to have a peek behind the scenes of Top Gun: Maverick.
  20. About a year and a half has passed between Venom: Let There Be Carnage and the first movie, says director Andy Serkis. In 2018, Sony once again tried its hand at creating its own Marvel universe comprised of Spider-Man characters with Venom. The Ruben Fleischer-directed film starred Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, a journalist who becomes an unwitting host to a symbiote named Venom. Though receiving mixed-to-negative reviews from critics, Venom was a bona fide hit, winning over audiences with the odd couple pairing of Eddie and Venom, as well as Hardy's go for broke performance. The sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, is eagerly anticipated by those who loved the first installment, but it has suffered some setbacks over the past year. Once scheduled for release in October 2020, Venom: Let There Be Carnage became one of the many movies delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic. It has shuffled premiere dates a few times and currently remains scheduled for September 24. In perhaps a sign of Sony fully committing to that date, the first trailer for Venom: Let There Be Carnage finally debuted on Monday morning. START NOW RELATED: Venom 2 Is Ignoring Carnage's Perfect Tie-In To MCU Spider-Man's Story Following the trailer's premiere, Serkis spoke with IGN and broke down the different plot developments glimpsed in the clip. The opening moments of the Venom 2 trailer confirm Eddie and his symbiotic pal have been together for a while, and Serkis revealed the amount of time that has passed since the first movie. "They've been together for... a year and a half, say, since the last story," Serkis said. At the start of Let There Be Carnage, they're still trying to figure out how to cohabitate. The longer gap between the two Venom movies sounds smart. While the first film tracked their meeting and early days of being together, Venom: Let There Be Carnage can move ahead to a time when they've already spent a decent period inhabiting the same space. This doesn't mean they've perfected the art of being paired up, as the breakfast scene from trailer confirmed, but it can deepen their relationship without actively showing every single beat of their lives. Venom: Let There Be Carnage will find Eddie and the symbiote in an interesting place, and their off-screen experiences from the past year or so can color their actions in a meaningful way. Eddie and Venom will still be experiencing some growing pains, but they will need to get over those quickly if they want to survive Let There Be Carnage. There are two major villains on the way: Shriek (Naomi Harris) and the titular Carnage (Woody Harrelson), who was teased in Venom's end-credits scene. It remains to be seen if Venom and Eddie have battled any bad guys since Riz Ahmed's Riot from the first film, but they might suffer a bit of an adjustment period. Either way, they've had some time to get used to each other by the start of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and it'll be interesting to see how they've grown.
  21. Patton Oswalt, the star of Hulu's upcoming stop-motion animated show Marvel's MODOK, has stated that he would love to bring the character into the live-action realm of the MCU. Oswalt is no stranger to the MCU as he portrayed quadruplets, the Koenig brothers, on several episodes of Agents of SHIELD. Similarly, MODOK has a long history within Marvel Comics as his origins date back to the 60s with appearances in comics, TV shows, and even video games. The show, which is slated to premiere on May 21, centers around the supervillain MODOK trying to balance family and work with a comedic tone. It's also one of Marvel's rare forays into Mature-rated content. MODOK boasts a stellar cast with Nathan Fillion, Whoopi Goldberg, Bill Hader, and Jon Hamm as Iron Man. The show was created by Jordan Blum and Oswalt, and Marvel Studios produced it. A MODOK trailer has been released, which gives eager fans a taste of the humorous tone and the unique style. With a clear passion for the character, Oswalt even discussed how it could be done with a mix of practical and digital effects, showing the level of depth he's already put into the idea. However, being a talented comedian, Oswalt wasn't shy in joking about an acting gig that would require sitting the whole time. "Are you kidding? That'd be freaking awesome if we played MODOK live action. Oh my God. I would love it. Plus, it's an acting job where I get to sit down the whole time. Are you kidding? I'd love that." While Marvel's intentions for the character are unclear past the show, they are unlikely to rule out anything the fans would love to see onscreen. Oswalt himself is a lifelong comic book fan, and with his eagerness, Marvel may just consider it if the show is a hit as they have an ever-growing universe on their hands that shows no signs of stopping. Marvel has six films slated to release in the next year alone, including Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. While the success of MODOK could potentially bring the character into the live-action projects, it actually may carry more weight in what happens with other mature Marvel projects like the long-in-development Deadpool 3. The MCU has stayed prominently in PG-13 territory to astounding success, but with mature comic-based content finding its own hold in the market with the first two Deadpool films and Logan, something like MODOK being a hit could ease Marvel's trepidation with future projects. Whatever Marvel decides for the future of the MCU, they can rest assured that Oswalt is ready and willing to help.
  22. The director of The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It says that the film won't introduce the next big ghoul of the horror franchise. The Conjuring films began as an adaptation of the case files of Ed and Lorraine Warren, tackling instances of demonic possession. The original 2013 and 2016 films were praised for their haunted house stories and both The Conjuring and its sequel became two of the most successful horror films of the 21st century. This prompted the franchise to go in new directions, branching off from the story of the Warren's to tell other ghostly tales. The interconnected Conjuring universe includes movies centered around various paranormal entities that the Warren's have encounter during their casework. Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation, and Annabelle Comes Home are all about the titular doll that was featured in the first film. The Nun features the character Valak from The Conjuring 2, while The Curse of La Llorona nods to the universe by featuring a character from the Annabelle films. The most recent spinoff, Annabelle Comes Home, was released in 2019 and with a new Conjuring film on the way, some hoped that The Devil Made Me Do It would introduce the next ghoulish spinoff. START NOW RELATED:How Annabelle Comes Home's Ending Connects To The Conjuring Movies In an interview with Screen Rant, director Michael Chaves says that this is not the case, though. The director did say that even he thought this would be possible, asking producer James Wan what kind of demon The Devil Made Me Do It would introduce into the universe. Chaves says that Wan told him they would be doing something unique this time around, though, crafting a different adversary for the Warren's, the likes of which has never been seen in The Conjuring universe. The Conjuring movies have introduced other ghouls that The Conjuring universe has been built around. Are we going to see the next Annabelle in this movie? Michael Chaves: It's funny, that was the first thing [I asked]. When James talked to me about it, I was like, "What's the new iconic monster? What are we going to do? Is it going to be a demon priest? Or is it going to be an evil mannequin?" I was just joking with him, but I was honestly so excited. James is not only the master of horror, but a master monster maker. And from the very beginning, he was like, "That's what everyone's expecting. We're gonna do something different." And I think that this is a movie that is intentionally a different Warren adventure and a different experience. We definitely have an adversary that we've never faced before; that you've never seen before. And I think that in itself is going to be kind of unique and surprising. I'm excited for you guys to see it. The decision not to introduce another movie-hopping ghost is probably for the best. When The Devil Made Me Do It hits theaters and HBO Max this summer, it will have been five years since the Warren's have taken center stage in a film of their own. While the first two Conjuring films found balance in introducing spinoff films and focusing on the Warren's, The Conjuring 3 will have a lot on its plate. The story of Arne Johnson is a complicated one - after murdering his landlord, he pleads not guilty, using demonic possession as a reason behind the murder. On top of that, though, is the spirit behind the possession and its involvement in both Johnson's life and a young child's, played by Julian Hilliard. Taking time to focus on those stories as well as the Warren's own demons is more than enough for one film and there's still plenty of opportunities to come for the paranormal investigators. The Conjuring universe will also introduce another spinoff with The Crooked Man, so there will be no shortage of ghoulish entries. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is clearly set to begin a new chapter in the franchise and focusing on the Warren's is the right way to do it.

START NOW RELATED: The Martian: How Scientifically Accurate The Matt Damon Movie Really Is It was certainly a success, but there was a time when The Martian could've looked a lot different. Weir recently spoke to CinemaBlend to promote his newest novel Project Hail Mary, but he still found time to talk about his breakout (and originally self-published) book. When asked if there had been a competition for the role of Mark Watney, Weir revealed Fox initially pushed for Channing Tatum instead of Damon. He said: "Well, when Matt Damon threw his hat in the ring, we were like, ‘Oh hell yeah.’ Bear in mind, in The Martian I had no say whatsoever. My only job was to cash the check. The producers and Ridley were like, ‘Oh hell yeah. That works.’ But the studio was really pushing to have Channing Tatum play the lead. And I was like, ‘I don’t see that. He’s an absolutely gorgeous man, but I don’t see him being this really really smart guy.’ I’m sure the real Channing Tatum is plenty intelligent, but that’s not the kind of character he usually plays. He usually plays either a guy who’s gorgeous, or a guy who’s a badass, or both. But yeah, we got Matt, and Matt did such a fantastic job. He nailed it." Tatum is best known for his roles in 21 and 22 Jump Street and the Magic Mike franchise, both instances where he puts on excellent performances. There's no question that Tatum is a talented actor, but at this point it's hard to imagine someone other than Damon portraying Watney's dry humor and determined survival instinct. Weir's reasoning for backing Damon over Tatum could perhaps inspire some outraged reactions from the latter's fanbase, but he had a right to push for the actor he thought could best inhabit his character. It's safe to say in this case, The Martian turned out really well with Damon in the lead. In fact, by allowing Damon to star in The Martian, Fox caused the continuation of a new genre of films: Matt Damon Is Lost In Space. This happened in Interstellar, and some might say his cameo in Thor: Ragnarok contributes to this as well. Of course, Fox really just chose the right actor for the role of Mark Watney. Tatum could've been good in the part, but now this just feels like Damon's role through and through
  24. Mission: Impossible 7 will feature the most dangerous stunt that Tom Cruise has ever filmed and he's giving a preview with what to expect from it. The actor has made a name for himself for not only doing his own action sequences but also pushing for them to be more thrilling every time. While he's had this mentality in his other blockbusters, it's something that he's fully able to do in the Mission: Impossible films where he plays IMF agent, Ethan Hunt. Cruise re-teams with director Christopher McQuarrie who returns for the third time to helm an installment since joining the franchise in 2015 via Mission: Impossible- Rogue Nation. Plot details are still scant at the moment, but the Mission: Impossible 7 cast will be a mix of new and familiar faces. Returning actors include Rebecca Ferguson (Ilsa Faust), Ving Rhames (Luther), Simon Pegg (Benji), and Vanessa Kirby (White Widow). Meanwhile, Hayley Atwell, Esai Morales, Shea Whigham, Pom Klementieff, Rob Delaney, Indira Varma, and Cary Elwes are joining the series in yet-to-be-disclosed roles. Aside from the actual story of the upcoming spy thriller, there's also anticipation for what ridiculously dangerous action set-piece Cruise the blockbuster will have. START NOW RELATED: Why Tom Cruise Needs Top Gun 2 To Succeed More Than Mission: Impossible 7 With just a little bit over a year before it hits theaters, marketing for Mission: Impossible 7 is already beginning with a new feature from Empire where the actor provides details for potentially the most dangerous stunt he's ever done. In the interview, Cruise reveals the specifics of the action scene where he rides a motorcycle over the edge of the cliff. “If the wind was too strong, it would blow me off the ramp. The helicopter [filming the stunt] was a problem, because I didn’t want to be hammering down that ramp at top speed and get hit by a stone. Or if I departed in a weird way, we didn’t know what was going to happen with the bike. I had about six seconds once I departed the ramp to pull the chute and I don’t want to get tangled in the bike. If I do, that’s not going to end well.” Initially, the Mission: Impossible 7 stunt sounds tame compared to what Cruise has done before in the franchise. He had hung off of a skyscraper, dangled from a helicopter, and clung to the side of a flying plane among others over the years. It's also worth noting that this won't be the first time that he'll be riding a motorcycle as Ethan almost always finds himself on one. However, as the actor pointed out, there were so many exterior factors that could've made the sequence a deadly disaster. Furthermore, the seamless transition from the bike to the parachute adds a significant layer of complexity. Filming for the spy thriller has always been difficult due to its elaborate action sets, but production for Mission: Impossible 7 was much trickier as it was the height of the coronavirus pandemic. Principal photography has to shut down in accordance with health protocols and everyone needed to be more extra careful so as not to have an outbreak. So aside from Cruise's stunts, it's also interesting how they're able to pull shooting a film off.
  25. S piral: From The Book of Saw, which is the ninth film in the Saw franchise, could get a sequel, according to the star and producer, Chris Rock. The Saw franchise debuted in 2004 when James Wan and Leigh Whannell’s story revived the horror genre and led to many successful sequels. Eventually, the gory horror films became repetitive and uneventful, and many thought the franchise had come to an end after 2017’s underwhelming Jigsaw. In 2019, however, a surprising announcement came out that the franchise was not only returning with a spinoff film but was being spearheaded by comedy star Chris Rock. A reboot that will incorporate some humor without taking away from it being a Saw film. Continue Scrolling To Keep ReadingClick the button below to start this article in quick view. START NOW After being delayed a year due to the coronavirus pandemic, Spiral will hit theatres this Friday, and it will tell the story of Detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks (Rock) and his partner William Schenk (Max Minghella) as they investigate a series of mysterious murders committed by a Jigsaw copycat. A TV spot highlighted how the new killer’s motivation differs from John Kramer (Jigsaw), as the targets are now dirty cops. Also, while gore and blood are still present, the film appears to follow a more suspenseful/thriller route. Lionsgate and co. are hoping the changes, alongside some familiar Saw elements, will rejuvenate the franchise, and according to the film’s star, a sequel could already be in the works. RELATED: Spiral: Everything We Know About Jigsaw's Replacement Killer As the release of Spiral inches closer, Rock has been doing some media rounds promoting the film, and in a recent interview with ComicBook, the star hinted that a Spiral: From The Book of Saw 2 could happen. During the interview, the star was asked if this project is a one and done for him or if he will “stick around for a while, even if it’s just behind the scenes?” Rock replied with a subtle, “We’re talking,” before going on to say they want this film to do “well,” and don’t want to get “too ahead of ourselves.” However, according to Rock, “another one wouldn’t be out of the question.” "We're talking. We want this one to do well, so we don't want to get too ahead of ourselves, but, if this one does well, I could see myself doing this again. I could see ... I mean, I don't want to spoil the movie, but it's open ... another one wouldn't be out of the question." Considering the history of Saw and the fact this appears to follow a brand new killer that draws inspiration from Jigsaw, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that “another one” is possible. If the film does well, it will be interesting to see if Rock’s character will once again be at the center of the possible sequel. Spiral’s story seems to have a big focus on Rock’s character and his father (Samuel L. Jackson), and Saw has a history of finding ways to keep characters around even if they die (E.g. Jigsaw). There has also already been talks of a Saw X and a possible TV show, so it appears that Lionsgate are confident in their latest Saw project. Judging by the various trailers and comments from Rock and director Darren Lynn Bousmann, Spiral looks to have found a great balance between finding a fresh approach while maintaining the traditional elements of Saw audiences will expect. The dirty cops angle gives the film quite a current real-life message, and moments like Zeke holding a saw are clearly an homage to one of the most iconic scenes in the franchise’s long history. Whether Spiral succeeds or not remains to be seen, but if it does, it appears fans should expect a Spiral: From The Book of Saw 2
