  1. After Batman: The Long Halloween, the next DC animated movie is Injustice. Since the release of Superman: Doomsday in 2007, DC has consistently been releasing animated features based on its iconic properties. Coming up, the company will be releasing a two-part adaptation of The Long Halloween, one of the most acclaimed Batman stories. In 2013, Injustice: Gods Among Us released on video game consoles. The gameplay was developed by Mortal Kombat's NetherRealm Studios, so it is a memorable competitive fighter. However, arguably the most notable aspect of the title is its original plot. The story takes place on an Earth when Superman became dictator after the Joker tricked him into killing Lois Lane. In the backstory, Superman kills Joker in revenge, setting the Man of Steel on his path to global leadership. The Batman of this world summons the Justice League from the main universe to combat Superman and his followers. The comic book prequel details the events leading up to the game. START NOW RELATED: Why The Arrowverse’s Next Crossover Event Should Be Injustice DC is releasing an Injustice animated feature. One of the special features on the Batman: The Long Halloween, Part Two release will contain a sneak peak at the film. There is no word yet on a release date. However, it is teased as the next DC animated film after the two-part Batman: The Long Halloween. It's also not known what the Injustice animated film will adapt specifically. If it adapts the game, it will feature the Justice League of the main universe fighting to take down Superman. However, it could also go the comic book route and adapt the beginning of the saga, showing Superman's downfall into world dictator, and Batman leading a resistance. There are certainly enough comics for more than one movie adaption. Injustice: Gods Among Us received a sequel game in 2017, continuing the storyline. There are definitely different ways the animated film can go. The storyline of Injustice, which pits many of DC's characters against each other, is very interesting to watch unfold. The comics feature plenty of great character moments, such as Alfred beating up Superman. If the movie adapts the comics or game faithfully, fans are in for a treat. However, it's possible the film could be a loose adaption as well, grabbing elements from the plot, and doing its own thing. If so, it could be an interesting take on the story. Fans will know more when they can see the sneak peek when Batman: The Long Halloween, Part Two releases on July 27.
  2. Zack Snyder's New Vegas-set zombie movie Army of the Dead is receiving mostly positive reviews, making it the second of Snyder's 2021 movies that's managed to please the critics. Army of the Dead and the Snyder Cut of Justice League, which was released in March on HBO Max, are neck-and-neck on Rotten Tomatoes, with Army of the Dead securing a higher overall score and Justice League reviews having a higher average rating. Of course, comparing these two movies is like comparing apples and oranges. Zack Snyder's Justice League is a four-hour epic that's substantially different to the version of the movie that was released in 2017 and was largely comprised of footage from reshoots by replacement director Joss Whedon. A years-long campaign by fans for the "Snyder Cut" of Justice League proved successful, with Warner Bros. investing an additional $70 million to complete Snyder's version of the film. While not all critics thought Snyder's cut of Justice League was good, the overwhelming consensus is that it's definitely better than the 2017 version. START NOW RELATED: Army Of The Dead: Zombie Apocalypse Backstory And Heist Timeline Explained Army of the Dead also had a difficult journey to the screen. It was first announced back in 2007, but then was left in development hell until being picked up by Netflix in 2019. Snyder's previous zombie movie, a remake of George Romero's Dawn of the Dead, is generally considered to be one of his best films. Therefore, while it may not have been driven by a fierce fan campaign like the Snyder Cut was, there was a lot of interest in seeing Snyder's return to the zombie genre (especially after the trailer revealed a zombie tiger). Army of the Dead currently holds a score of 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to the 71% critics score for Zack Snyder's Justice League. However, the Snyder Cut actually has a higher average rating - 6.7/10 compared to Army of the Dead's 6.3/10. Rotten Tomatoes' scoring system has been criticized for reducing reviews to a binary positive ("Fresh") or negative ("Rotten") score, which means that a mediocre but generally inoffensive film with mostly 3/5 reviews can end up with a higher score than a movie that gets rave reviews from some critics, while being panned by others. A closer look at the reviews for Army of the Dead and Zack Snyder's Justice League indicates that the Netflix zombie movie is more of a people-pleaser, with generally positive reviews that praise it for being enjoyable, if somewhat uneven, and the negative reviews saying it falls short of its ambitions and suffers from being overly long. Meanwhile, the Justice League Snyder Cut has attracted more passionate reviews on both ends of the spectrum. For example, Slant's review states that "The film could be taken as an intentional travesty of the superhero genre, if only it weren't so tortuously tedious," while Mashable's review acknowledges its flaws but applauds it for taking risks: "It's a movie that cares enough to swing big, even if that means it misses sometimes." Snyder's films have a reputation for being sharply divisive. This has only been compounded by the cult of personality surrounding the director, who has garnered the kind of fiercely devoted fandom that's usually reserved for actors and music artists rather than filmmakers. But in terms of wider public opinion, both Zack Snyder's Justice League and Army of the Dead seem to have won people over, and put him in a strong position for whatever project he moves on to next.
  3. Don't Breathe 2 will officially have an R rating for bloody violence and gruesome images. The original film also received an R rating, though for different reasons. The first film was rated R for "terror, violence, disturbing content, and language including sexual references." Don't Breathe follows a group of robbers, including a girl named Rocky (Jane Levy), who break into a home in the hopes of scoring a life changing fortune. Their plan falls apart when they discover that the blind homeowner isn't as helpless as they originally thought. Much has been kept under wraps about the sequel, but a vague synopsis promises a similar cat and mouse game between The Blind Man (Stephen Lang) and a group of criminals who misjudged who they were about to go up against. This time, The Blind Man will be out of his element as he leaves his safe haven to save an orphaned girl that he had been raising in his isolated cabin. Based on what the first film showed viewers, it's likely that there will be much more to this premise as the story unfolds. Continue Scrolling To Keep ReadingClick the button below to start this article in quick view. START NOW RELATED: Don’t Breathe 2 Without Original Director Is A Mistake As reported by Bloody Disgusting, now that Don't Breathe 2 is deep into post-production after wrapping filming in October 2020, the film has received its official rating from the MPAA. Like its predecessor, Don't Breathe 2 will have an R rating. This means that movie goers under the age of 17 will need a parent or guardian in order to get in. Like most R ratings from the MPAA, this one comes with specific warnings that give viewers a more specific idea of what to expect from the film. The warnings attached indicate the ways in which the film will be different from the first. "Violence" has been upgraded to "strong bloody violence" for example. Though the premise seems to veer off from the original film, the matching R rating serves as a promise that this film will follow the lead of its predecessor and will not be pulling any of its punches. This could work in favor of the film, as it can attract the same type of audience that the first film did, but it could also signal that Don't Breathe 2 is going to take a risk. While the first film received generally good reviews, its controversial and brutal final act was met with far less praise. While the whole film was filled with fabulous gore and genuine scares, it was the now infamous turkey baster scene that proved the film simply couldn't have done with a PG-13 rating. It was this commitment to take things just a step further that turned away some viewers from the first film. It should be noted, however that the sequel's rating is without the sexual content warning that the first film received. Even with the controversial ending and R rating, Don't Breathe became one of 2016's horror blockbusters. The film was made for just $10 million and grossed $157 worldwide, making it one of the highest grossing R-rated horror films of all time. With numbers like those and overall favorable reviews, it was almost no question that The Blind Man would be returning for a sequel at some point, it was just a matter of when. Now, fans can finally see Don't Breathe 2 when it hits theaters on August 13, 2021.
  4. Jason Momoa has confirmed that Aquaman 2 will begin shooting this summer. Momoa first rose to prominence in his role as Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones, but his debut as Arthur Curry in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice began a new era for the actor. Momoa reprised his role in the divisive 2017 film Justice League before starring in his first solo DCEU feature in 2018. Directed by James Wan, Aquaman became the most successful DCEU film thus far, going on to earn over $1.1 billion at the worldwide box office. Right now, Aquaman 2 is shrouded in mystery. Alongside Momoa, Amber Heard is returning as Meera, as is Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta. It is assumed that Randall Park will also be returning as Dr. Stephen Shin thanks to his appearance in the post-credits scene of the first film that saw him team up with Black Manta. Willem Dafoe is also likely to return as Vulko. Whether or not Patrick Wilson's Ocean Master returns is unclear, but he is currently in an Atlantean prison, so it's possible he, too, could pop up, even if he is not expected to be the film's big bad. START NOW RELATED:Every DC Movie Releasing In 2022 Luckily, some of the mystery surrounding the film will soon be cleared up. Momoa confirmed on The Drew Barrymore Show that Aquaman 2 begins filming this July. The actor also revealed that he had a hand in writing the story for the upcoming sequel, pitching it to the studio immediately after the first film. After we ended the first one I went in with my writing partner and we dreamed up the second one and we went in and pitched the idea. The best thing I can give you is that I love it so much that I participated in the writing of it. And so, we did the first treatment and then James and our original writer David finished it off. And all of our hearts are in it. Instead of just like getting a script and doing that, you are 100% being encouraged by your director and co-writers. So that’s exciting for me and I’m excited to go over there. I leave in July and we start filming. By all accounts, it sounds like the film is right on schedule. Heard revealed that she was training for Aquaman 2 back in April, indicating that shooting would be happening quite soon. With a release date currently set for December 2022, a summer shoot gives DC plenty of time to make sure the sequel goes off without a hitch. Seeing as WB has a lot riding on the film, this is a good sign. Aquaman may be one of the most promising solo arms of the DCEU alongside Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman films. Now that the franchise is moving past Zack Snyder's Justice League and the SnyderVerse in general, they've begun looking to the future. This will not include Wan's horror spinoff The Trench, which was cancelled earlier this year, but the studio does have plenty in store for fans regardless. Aquaman 2 will be a big part of that future, setting the tone for Arthur Curry's role in the franchise going forward as one of the DCEU's major heroes.
  5. Martin Freeman calls Jim Carrey's performance in Man on the Moon “selfish.” Released in 1999, Man on the Moon stars Jim Carrey as the legendary comedian, Andy Kaufman. While the film wasn’t very successful critically or commercially, it is remembered today because of Carrey’s transformative performance as Kaufman, a role which he won a Golden Globe for a year after he won the same award for The Truman Show. Carrey made multiple iconic comedies during the ‘90s, such as Ace Ventura, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber, but his dramatic performances near the latter end of the decade signaled a turning point in his career. His next dramatic role was Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which is commonly considered the best of his career. While his on-screen performance in Man on the Moon is memorable, it is also notable due to Carrey’s uncompromising method acting, as he stayed in character as Kaufman both on and offset for the entirety of the film’s production. The 2017 Netflix documentary, Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond, chronicles the unbelievable extent to which Carrey went to embody Kaufman. Continue Scrolling To Keep ReadingClick the button below to start this article in quick view. START NOW RELATED:Why Sequels To Jim Carrey Movies Never Work Without Him Now, appearing on the Off Menu podcast, Martin Freeman has some choice words regarding Carrey’s method acting antics on the set of Man on the Moon. Freeman, an actor known for Black Panther, The Office, and The Hobbit trilogy, believes Carrey’s behavior on set was unprofessional, amateurish, and a fireable offense. Read Freeman’s full comments below, per ET Canada: For me, and I’m genuinely sure Jim Carrey is a lovely and smart person, but it was the most self-aggrandizing, selfish, f**king narcissistic bollocks I have ever seen. The idea anything in our culture would celebrate that or support it is deranged, literally deranged. I am a very lapsed catholic but if you believe in transubstantiation, then you’re going somewhere along the line of “I became the character,” No, you didn’t, you’re not supposed to become the f***ing character because you’re supposed to be open to stuff that happens in real life because someone at some stage is going to say “Cut” and there’s no point going, "What does ‘cut’ mean because I’m Napoleon?" Shut up. Freeman’s rant raises some very interesting questions regarding the validity of method acting, a technique that was originally developed by Russian actor, Konstantin Stanislavski. Other method actors, most famously Daniel Day-Lewis, have fully immersed themselves in their roles without any accusations of unprofessionalism, though Marlon Brando was famously difficult to work with onset. The problem Freeman seems to take issue with is using method acting as a guise to behave unprofessionally on set, rather than method acting itself. Recent accusations of unprofessionalism against Joss Whedon along with allegations against Noel Clarke on the set of Doctor Who, have started a dialogue about inappropriate on-set behavior. Freeman’s choice words on Carrey's behavior on set of Man on the Moon are a welcome addition to the current discourse.
  6. Eternals star Salma Hayek never thought she would be considered for a Marvel movie. Hayek is set to star in Eternals from Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao. Hayek will play Ajak, the leader of the superhero team, and while Hayek is one of the most popular and recognizable stars in the world, this is her first foray into the superhero genre. 2021 is shaping up to be a big year for Hayek. She will be first seen in Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard alongside Ryan Reynolds and Samuel Jackson this summer after the film was delayed from 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She will also be seen in Ridley Scott's House of Gucci alongside Adam Driver and Lady Gaga. She recently signed on to develop a series about talking breasts for HBO Max. And, of course, she will also appear in Eternals, a highly anticipated piece of Marvel Studios Phase 4 plans. START NOW RELATED: MCU's Eternals Footage Suggests A Major Comic Book Story Change Hayek, however, didn't expect to get a role in a Marvel movie, she said during an interview with Variety. She explained that, as a Mexican woman in her 50s, she thought superhero roles were no longer in the cards for her. But when Hayek was cast, she was so excited to tell people that she had a hard time keeping it a secret. She said: "It never crossed my mind to be in a Marvel movie. I guess that I thought that boat had sailed, and it was an absolute shock. All of a sudden, I got a call: “They want to talk to you about a new franchise.” And I was like, “What?” And I said OK, but they don’t tell you any information until you’re on the call. It’s kind of hard to be an action hero if you’re Mexican. It’s really hard to be an action hero if you’re a Mexican and a woman. But to be an action hero, being Mexican, a woman, and my age, it felt like they were punking me. And then the worst part is that I was one of the first people they cast. I had to keep my mouth shut for so many months. I couldn’t tell a soul. And I couldn’t wait for the day that I could say it." News of Hayek's casting for Eternals surfaced around June 2019, meaning she may have met with Marvel much longer before then. Fans already knew that Angelina Jolie and Kumail Nanjiani had joined the cast and were given an insight into the type of diverse, talented cast Marvel was looking at for Eternals. In the comics, Ajak is a man, but Marvel Studios gender-flipped the character to able to cast a talented actress like Hayek. While Hayek is no stranger to action films like Desperado, Wild Wild West, and From Dusk till Dawn, she transitioned her career into a variety of roles including the Oscar-nominated Frida. Hayek may have found herself in a position that a lot of women in Hollywood do, where they appear to be too old for certain parts while their male counterparts can get the same roles into their 50s. Rene Russo was famously let go from Batman Forever after Michael Keaton was replaced with Val Kilmer as they thought she was too old for her co-star. Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, and Paul Rudd are all in their 50s and playing major Marvel heroes. Hayek's casting, along with more in Eternals, is a good sign that Marvel is looking to cast extremely talented actors in leading superhero parts regardless of age.
  7. The Fast & Furious franchise is breaking box office records once again, with its latest entry F9 already starting out strong as it debuts in international cinemas. With eight installments in the main arm of the franchise, and nine including spinoff Hobbs & Shaw, the Fast & Furious films have grossed nearly $6 billion. The franchise hit its peak with its seventh installment, Furious 7, that saw an all-time high of $1.5 billion worldwide. Although that peak has yet to be reached again, the eighth installment, The Fate of the Furious, proceeded to gross over $1.2 billion. Anticipation is high for the ninth installment in the franchise. As is typical for films that were set to release in 2020, F9 has bounced around the release schedule in search of a solid date. Between 2019 and 2021, the film had five total release dates before landing on its June 25 date stateside. F9 has already begun rolling out in international territories, though, and all signs point to another success for the long-running film series. Continue Scrolling To Keep ReadingClick the button below to start this article in quick view. START NOW RELATED:Every Franchise Movie Releasing In 2021 Deadline reports that F9 has already broken one franchise box office record, beating the series' opening day take in Korea. Bowing with $3.4 million, F9 had the best opening day ever in the Korean market. It is also the top grossing opening for a film during the pandemic in Korea. F9 already sold over $2 million in pre-sale tickets, setting it up for a stellar run throughout the rest of its opening weekend. Unfortunately, it seems all but guaranteed that F9 will be unable to reach the box office heights of its predecessors. This isn't for a lack of trying, either. The movie has arguably only grown in hype in the time it has sat on the release calendar in limbo. Still, the state of moviegoing is not at pre-pandemic levels. Theaters are still unable to operate at full capacity in some places, especially in all-important markets like New York and Los Angeles. Luckily, the international box office is a little bit of a different story. Although it varies from place to place, international territories have had a swifter return to the regular moviegoing schedule. Movies like Godzilla vs Kong have seen large international hauls thanks to this. It will still be an uphill battle for F9, especially in the United States, but it's safe to say that the return of the moviegoing experience is slowly happening. The latest Fast & Furious movie is likely to play a big part in that as one of the earliest blockbusters to hit theaters exclusively this summer ahead of what is absolutely stacked fall release calendar.
  8. F9: The Fast Saga star Sung Kang has opened up about the Fast and Furious franchise’s efforts for diversity and inclusivity in a new interview. The actor, who plays fan-favorite character Han in the films, is returning to the franchise in F9 after appearing to be killed at the start of Furious 7 (or the middle of Tokyo Drift…it’s all a bit confusing). Han’s return has been met with excitement from the Fast fanbase, and early critical reactions to the movie have been very positive so far. As a franchise, Fast and Furious has always succeeded on two main merits – the insanity of its stunts, and the strength of its ensemble. That ensemble has grown massive in size over the years, including a diverse group of stars. Fast and Furious is far from flawless when it comes to representation – especially when it comes to the writing of its female characters – but it has been a forerunner in expanding diversity in major Hollywood blockbusters. Continue Scrolling To Keep ReadingClick the button below to start this article in quick view. START NOW RELATED: Biggest Tokyo Drift Questions That Fast & Furious 9 Can Answer In a recent interview with People, Sung Kang discussed that legacy and the reputation of the franchise as “popcorn” movies. “It's a course correction of always respecting the fan base and the audience,” Kang said when asked about the resurrection of his Han character. “You can't just dismiss that inner tension, right? And fortunately, you have creative people that respect the fans enough to course-correct, create a story to give that explanation, do justice and pay respect.” He then went on to discuss the franchise’s broader efforts to tell a respectful story for its characters. “I think that's the challenge that Fast has had since its birth, that it's a popcorn movie about fast cars and a bunch of stunts. But I think it's the last movie to get any credit. It's been a movie that represented inclusiveness and diversity, and then it's proven that it's financially viable in Hollywood. That diversity, it works… Never dismiss and disrespect the audience. They are the reason why the movies exist, so you can't just ignore them. It's cool and great that a studio like Universal listens, they listen. That's a course correction. That's the justice.” Again, it would be negligent to talk about representation in Fast and Furious without acknowledging how the franchise has historically stumbled when it comes to its female characters and stars – a problem Michelle Rodriguez has spoken about publicly on many occasions. Fortunately, those issues have been somewhat mended in recent installments, both from the continued introduction of compelling female characters and improvements to how they’re written. According to Rodriguez, F9 has made significant strides forward in that regard. Fast and Furious has also broken ground for its representation behind the camera, with director Justin Lin having turned the franchise into one of the most commercially successful in history. Lin’s absence from Furious 7 and The Fate of the Furious saw the series drop off a bit in its critical success and it handled the death of Han in such poor fashion that fans started demanding justice for the character. Fortunately, both Lin and Han are back in full swing in F9: The Fast Saga.
  9. Airborne heist movie Money Plane has gotten a double dose of comedic critique in a new Honest Trailers/Pitch Meeting crossover video. The film, which stars Adam Copeland, Kelsey Grammar, Thomas Jane, and Denise Richards, released in July of 2020 on various video-on-demand platforms to an abysmal critical reception. Now Money Plane is getting both the Honest Trailers and Pitch Meeting treatment, all at once. The story of Money Plane follows master thief Jack Reese (Copeland), who agrees to execute a dangerous heist to pay his debt to criminal mogul Darius “The Rumble” Grouch (Grammar). The heist involves sneaking aboard the infamous Money Plane – an airborne haven where international ne’er-do-wells gamble on illegal and bizarre things – and robbing it of both its cash stores and cryptocurrency stock. The heist goes haywire, and the crew must fight through the Money Plane to get out with their money and lives. RELATED: Disaster Artist True Story: Tommy Wiseau's Life & The Room Explained Though the concept sounds fun on paper, Money Plane fails to deliver any effective execution. The movie currently holds a dismal 23 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and it’s become notorious in the year since its release for its glaring, if occasionally hilarious, faults. Now, Money Plane has gotten the complete Honest Trailers treatment, with a special crossover appearance from Screen Rant’s own Pitch Meeting series. It’s a total takedown of the film from start to finish, which should be fun for both those who’ve seen Money Plane and those who haven’t. Watch the video below. As shown in the video, there can still be merit in a universally terrible film. Famously bad movies like The Room have become cult-classics specifically because their flaws make them entertaining to watch, and Money Plane has built up a similar reputation since its release. Perhaps that backward legacy will keep Money Plane in the public consciousness for years to come. Or maybe the joke will die, and the film’s notoriety will fade along with it. At the very least, Money Plane delivers an incredibly cartoonish villain in Grammar’s Darius Grouch, brought hilariously to life by the Frasier star’s manic, shouty performance. Grammar is set to reprise his iconic role as Frasier Crane in the upcoming Paramount+ revival series, but it’s nice to see him having some fun with less mainstream roles as well. Money Plane is still available via video-on-demand for anyone interesting in seeing it for themselves. However, viewers might be better served by just watching the Honest Trailer and saving their money.
  10. A new Nano Gauntlet toy from Hasbro lets users act out Iron Man's snap from Avengers: Endgame. The 2019 movie brought the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Infinity Saga to a bittersweet conclusion thanks to the deaths of Iron Man and Black Widow, as well as Steve Rogers' retirement from being Captain America. However, the legacies of the three heroes continue to be a major part of the MCU. Black Widow has her long-awaited prequel solo film finally coming out in July, and Sam Wilson just took on the Captain America mantle for real in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Meanwhile, Peter Parker's grief over losing Tony Stark factored heavily into Spider-Man: Far From Home and will likely play a role in its sequel as well. It also made for one of the MCU's most iconic moments and allowed Tony's character arc to come full circle. Even now, two years after Avengers: Endgame released in theaters, people are still talking about the movie and that moment in particular. Now, they have a chance to recreate Iron Man's heroic snap thanks to a new toy. According to the product description, "At 18 inches tall, this electronic fist features flexible finger articulation, lights, and sounds, including movie-inspired Snap! and 6 removable light-up Infinity Stones." The pre-order price is listed at $124.99. Check out some images of the Avengers: Endgame toy below: This isn't the first wearable gauntlet from Hasbro: the company came out with a Power Gauntlet in 2019. However, the detail on the new product is especially impressive, and the finger articulation is neat as well. Considering the huge impact Iron Man's snap had on the trajectory of the MCU, there are likely many eager to pre-order the Nano Gauntlet so they can act out the moment themselves. The new toy shows the continued popularity of Avengers: Endgame and Iron Man as a character despite his departure from the MCU. As the original Avenger, his presence continues to be felt throughout the franchise by its heroes. Even as the MCU heads into Phase 4, that seems unlikely to change anytime soon. Products like the Marvel Legends Series Iron Man Nano Gauntlet allow people to continue celebrating the character and his unforgettable role in the Marvel universe.
  11. Simu Liu, star of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, detailed his exercise regimen for the upcoming MCU film and it sounds brutal. The Chinese-Canadian actor was cast in the role of Shang-Chi in 2019, making him the first Asian superhero in the Marvel franchise. Shang-Chi has faced a slew of delays on its way to theaters, first set to be released on February 12, 2021, the first day of the Chinese New Year. COVID-related schedule changes forced the film to shift to May and then July before finally landing on a September debut. Liu's excitement for Shang-Chi is clear - the actor has consistently talked about how emotional the experience of shooting the film was for him. The actor described the first time he tried on his superhero suit, nearly crying in the process. When the Shang-Chi trailer finally hit the internet on Liu's birthday, the actor took to Twitter to express his surprise and excitement at the clip. Liu would workout three times a day during the shoot in Australia last summer, lifting weights and working through fight choreography. The actor would also stretch his body to its limits in an effort to acclimate himself to the flexibility required by Kung-Fu. It is reported that Liu could barely walk after these sessions, but continued to pour in the work regardless. Liu already showed off his fighting skills in a video he posted to social media late last year, but nothing can compare to what Shang-Chi has in store. For the movie's action, director Destin Daniel Cretton drew inspiration from everything from the wushu fighting style seen in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon to the more "kinetic" fighting seen in modern action movies. All of this will make for one of the most unique and exciting Marvel movies in some time, breaking from the traditional superhero mold for something much different. Shang-Chi will release in theaters after July's Black Widow, a movie that seems more in line with the traditional Marvel format. Coupled with Eternals, though, Shang-Chi will bring action unseen before in the MCU and much of that is likely thanks, in part, to Liu's dedication to the role. Although Liu has made appearances in several popular television shows, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings could be a different kind of breakthrough for the actor, opening the door to a new franchise in the MCU and beyond.
  12. Marvel head Kevin Feige admits Doctor Strange's instance of white-washing was a mistake. The 2016 film was directed by Scott Derrickson and introduced Benedict Cumberbatch to the MCU. As Stephen Strange, an arrogant surgeon humbled by a devastating accident, Cumberbatch has since gone on to appear in multiple MCU installments, and he already has two more on the way: This year's Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Doctor Strange was generally well-received when it first premiered, but it was marred by one large controversy. Tilda Swinton was cast as the Ancient One, a character who is an Asian male in the comics. As it was only the latest instance in a series white-washing incidents within Hollywood at the time, it sparked intense public outcry. At the time, Derrickson and Feige defended the decision by explaining Swinton's casting was intended to avoid racist stereotypes that were often baked into older comics. This didn't do much to sway Doctor Strange's critics, but the movie continued as planned, and Swinton even reprised the role in Avengers: Endgame. In a cover story with Men's Health about Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Marvel's first Asian-led film, Feige admits there could have been a far better way to avoid poor stereotypes than to cast a white woman in a role that could've gone to an Asian performer. "We thought we were being so smart, and so cutting-edge," Feige said. He continued: “We’re not going to do the cliché of the wizened, old, wise Asian man. But it was a wake-up call to say, ‘Well, wait a minute, is there any other way to figure it out? Is there any other way to both not fall into the cliché and cast an Asian actor?’ And the answer to that, of course, is yes.” Marvel has made more positive steps forward in terms of diversity since then, but Doctor Strange's case of white-washing remains a check against the studio. Since Hollywood first began, white-washing has been an embarrassing practice, and Doctor Strange sadly isn't the only recent movie to get called out for it. It's good to know Feige has since learned from this mistake, as it shows he'll do better in the future. Granted, it came years after Doctor Strange debuted, but increased awareness of past mistakes is always a good thing. This year holds some of Marvel's most diverse blockbusters yet, with the aforementioned Shang-Chi (which has found better ways to circumvent racist stereotypes from the comics) and Eternals both scheduled for the fall. Even beyond 2021, the MCU is looking to feature heroes that go beyond typical white male heroes. The best way to show that the studio has learned from Doctor Strange, though, is to make sure it never white-washes a character again. Feige seems to have learned, but should there be another mi
  13. Netflix has announced that the Addams Family spin-off series Wednesday has found its lead with You star Jenna Ortega in the titular role. The eight-episode series will center on the eldest Addams daughter as she is sent to the peculiar Nevermore Academy. While attempting to master her emerging psychic ability, she must also end a monstrous killing spree in the local town and solve the supernatural mystery her parents were caught up in 25 years ago. The series is being directed by Tim Burton in his TV debut and hails from showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar. The modern king of gothic filmmaking has been attempting to get an Addams Family project off the ground for years. After initially having to pass on directing the first live-action film due to his duties on Batman Returns, Burton would return with a stop-motion film at Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures at the start of 2010. However, after two years of development, it was later revealed that the project had been canceled by the studio alongside adaptations of Where's Waldo? and Clifford the Big Red Dog, though no explanation was given. START NOW RELATED: Everything We Know About Tim Burton's Addams Family Reboot Announced via their Netflix Geeked account, the streaming platform decided to celebrate the mid-week day by announcing that Ortega had officially signed on to star in the titular role. Ortega also showed off a photo of herself with the script for the first episode, entitled "Chapter One." The photo can be viewed below: Though a spin-off series might not sound quite as appealing as Burton getting his hands on the entire family and their adventures, Wednesday is still one of the most exciting projects the filmmaker currently has in the works. Given Netflix's strong reputation for the creative freedom they allot, the streamer not only seems like the perfect home for Burton's eccentric directorial style but also for him to make his TV directorial debut. Plus, with word swirling that Christina Ricci, who previously played a live-action version of Wednesday, is being eyed to star as the family matriarch Morticia, he could very well have a few tricks up his sleeves for long-time fans of the franchise. Even with the eight-episode series seemingly done scripting and a director and star lined up, there's still a long road to go for Wednesday's arrival on Netflix. But given Ortega's frequent explorations of the terrifying and macabre in Insidious: Chapter 2, The Babysitter: Killer Queen, and her role in the upcoming Scream, she should deliver the exact brand of dark humor and menace fans expect from the titular role. In the meantime, audiences can at least look forward to Wednesday's animated return when The Addams Family 2 hits theaters on October 1 with Chloë Grace Moretz back voicing the character.
  14. Jason Momoa reveals he had a hand in writing Aquaman 2. The former Game of Thrones star transformed into a superhero for 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, where he made a quick cameo as Arthur Curry, aka Aquaman. He received a much bigger role in Justice League, but it was the 2018 solo project Aquaman that truly gave Momoa the chance to sink into the role. Directed by James Wan, Aquaman further explored Arthur's place as the half-human son of Atlantis, which put him in conflict with his brother Orm (Patrick Wilson). Both Momoa and Wilson are set to return for Aquaman 2, the long-awaited sequel. Wan will direct once more; additional returning faces include Amber Heard and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Despite the first Aquaman making over $1 billion worldwide, the sequel isn't scheduled for release until December of next year. As a result, little is known about the plot or new cast members. So far, only Pilou Asbaek (Game of Thrones) has joined Aquaman 2 as a newcomer to the DCEU. Several cast members have indicated production will begin in the coming months. START NOW RELATE: Aquaman 2: Manta's Return Should Introduce N.E.M.O As Villains Momoa recently appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show, where he shared some new information about Aquaman 2. Unfortunately, he couldn't reveal anything specific about the film itself. However, Momoa did share this particularly interesting bit of news: He had a hand in developing the story. Momoa explained: "After we ended the first one I went in with my writing partner and we dreamed up the second one and we went in and pitched the idea. The best thing I can give you is that I love it so much that I participated in the writing of it. And so, we did the first treatment and then James and our original writer David [Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick] finished it off. And all of our hearts are in it. Instead of just like getting a script and doing that, you are 100% being encouraged by your director and co-writers. So that’s exciting for me and I’m excited to go over there. I leave in July and we start filming." Momoa's enthusiasm for Aquaman 2's story certainly bodes well for the entire project. His performance as Aquaman has been praised by fans, and there's a chance his time playing the character could've helped him develop a truly compelling story. Without any concrete plot details, it's hard to say just where Momoa and his writing partner might've found inspiration. It could be the comic books, or it could even have a personal edge from Momoa's own life. The possibilities are endless. Momoa has hyped Aquaman 2 as a bigger movie than the first, and that movie went all the way to the depths of the ocean. Aquaman hails from a very rich world, so the sequel could perhaps explore it on a deeper level. As Momoa said in his above comments, filming is expected to begin this July so new information about Aquaman 2 could emerge within the next few months. Exactly when the story of the film will be released remains to be seen, but Momoa's excitement certainly helps ease the wait. After all, if he loves it so much he wanted to help write it, it must be pretty great.
  15. A website registration for a One Piece movie has some fans theorizing a new film adaptation is on the way. One Piece is a popular Japanese manga series that began in 1997. It follows Monkey D. Luffy, a kid who eats a Devil Fruit and becomes rubber-like as a result. He travels with the Straw Hat Pirates to seek out the title One Piece treasure, which will allow him to become the King of the Pirates. The manga is incredibly successful on its own and is currently the best-selling series of all time. However, it's also inspired a full-fledged media franchise made up of dozens of projects. Perhaps the best known of these is the long-running One Piece anime series that began in 1999 and now has close to a 1,000 episodes. Netflix began streaming some seasons of the show in June 2020, increasing its popularity in the United States. The streamer is also currently working on a live-action One Piece show, though many details about it remain a mystery. There have also been a total of 14 animated One Piece movies. The most recent, One Piece: Stampede, came out in August 2019. Now, a recent website registration has some thinking a new film adaptation could be on the way. It's important to note that this information is no guarantee a new One Piece movie is on the way. Even if the registration is legitimate, companies sometimes get domains well before projects are in development in case they need them later. However, it could very well be an indication another film adaptation is in the early stages. Even then, it will probably be awhile before any sort of official announcement is made. It's understandable fans are excited by the idea of a new One Piece movie. The live-action TV series has many hoping a non-animated film could happen at some point, too. Both manga and anime are particularly popular right now, as American audiences have shown an increased interest in recent years. It could be the perfect time for a live-action One Piece movie to be successful. Hopefully, the website registration does mean a new project is on the horizon.
  16. Netflix and RL Stine's Fear Street gets a new trailer, previewing the centuries spanning film trilogy coming to the streamer this summer. The iconic horror author Stine has plenty of novels ripe for adaptation, but Fear Street has been in development since 2015, originally intended to be one film. Now, Fear Street will be released as a three film trilogy that encompasses three different time periods - 1666, 1978, and 1994 - in the small Ohio town of Shadyside. In 1994, a group of teens will be ensnared in a series of terrifying events, the origins of which began centuries earlier. Their interest in these events will make them a target for a mysterious new killer with ties to the past. Fear Street has an expansive cast, including Stranger Things' Maya Hawke and Sadie Sink, Community's Gillian Jacobs, Olivia Welch, Kiana Madeira, Benjamin Flores Jr., Ashley Zukerman, and Jordana Spiro. RELATED:Every Netflix Horror Movie Releasing In 2021 Little was known about Fear Street up until now. Netflix has finally released a trailer for the trilogy of films, revealing the centuries-spanning events of the series and the day each entry will be coming to the streamer. The one-minute clip begins with the words, "We're all cursed. The witch is real," before diving into a montage of the horrifying events in Shadyside. Fear Street will release over three consecutive weeks, with Part 1 hitting the streamer on July 2, followed by Part 2 on July 9, and Part 3 on July 16. Check out the full clip below: Netflix is known for popularizing the binge model when it comes to some of their most popular series, but this will be the first time the streamer does this with a trio of films. The runtime of each part is not clear, but they will likely give horror fans plenty to sink their teeth into throughout the month of July. Stine has touted the films as heavily R-rated, meaning they won't shy away from the more gruesome aspect of his books, despite the fact that they were originally geared towards young adults. Fear Street is part of an exciting slate of Netflix originals coming to the streamer. Netflix will kick off the summer with Army of the Dead before releasing a slew of high-profile films in the following months. The streamer will also aim to enter the awards conversation this fall with films like Adam McKay's Don't Look Up and Blonde, a Marilyn Monroe biopic starring Ana de Armas. Fear Street will be the one to satisfy horror fans, though, and from the looks of the trailer, it will be just as terrifying as the nightmares the books inspired in many of the Stine's young fans.
  17. Charles Grodin, a prolific actor and comedian known for his roles in movies like Midnight Run and Beethoven, has passed away at the age of 86. BY REBECCA VANACKERPUBLISHED 1 DAY AGO Actor Charles Grodin, well known for his work in films like Beethoven and Midnight Run, has died at 86. Grodin got his start in Hollywood during the late 1950s, with his first credited appearance a 1958 episode of Decision. He worked primarily in TV for the next decade, guest-starring on several series and appearing as a regular on the daytime soap opera The Young Marrieds. In 1968, Grodin landed the role of Dr. C.C. Hill in Rosemary's Baby, a small part that led to bigger roles over the next several years, including the lead in 1972's The Heartbreak Kid. Throughout the '70s and '80s, Grodin starred in several iconic films, including King Kong (1976), Heaven Can Wait, and Midnight Run, the buddy comedy where he featured opposite Robert De Niro. One of Grodin's more memorable roles during that time came in 1981's The Great Muppet Caper, where he played a jewel thief named Nicky Holiday who falls in love with Miss Piggy. Grodin also became a well-known figure in late night TV, appearing frequently on both Johnny Carson and David Letterman's shows. In addition to his work in the '70s and '80s, Grodin will be remembered for his career over the last 30 years. In 1992, he played the patriarch of the family, George Newton, in the movie Beethoven opposite Bonnie Hunt. Grodin returned for the sequel, Beethoven's 2nd, the next year. The original film especially remains a beloved family classic, with Grodin's performance as an exasperated but caring father particularly memorable. In the late '90s and early 2000s, the actor pivoted to political commentating, working for 60 Minutes II and hosting his own talk show on CNBC. After taking some time off from movies, he appeared in the 2006 comedy The Ex with Zach Braff. Over the next 15 years, Grodin took on a series of supporting roles in movies like The Comedian and Noah Baumbach's While We're Young with Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts. He also put in guest-star appearances on Law and Order: Special Victims Unit and The Michael J. Fox Show. Grodin recurred on the FX series Louie as Dr. Bigelow in the final two seasons. His last on screen role is Arthur in the 2017 drama An Imperfect Murder, where he starred alongside Alec Baldwin and Sienna Miller. With so many iconic performances throughout his career, Grodin will be remembered for his fearlessness and commitment to the dozens of characters he portrayed.
  18. Top Gun producer Jerry Bruckheimer says he’s flattered by Quentin Tarantino’s famous monologue about the film’s gay subtext. The original Tom Cruise action movie was a smash hit in 1986, grossing $356 million worldwide. Later in 2021, Cruise will return as the iconic Navy pilot with a need for speed for the long-awaited sequel Top Gun: Maverick. Of course to many people the original Top Gun was more than just a blockbuster movie about macho men flying planes. A gay subtext was indeed being read into the movie almost from the very beginning, something that was easy to do given scenes like the famous shirtless beach volleyball game. Filmmaker Tarantino then took things to the next level when he performed a monologue for the 1994 indie movie Sleep With Me in which his character spells out in detail just how much of a secret gay film Top Gun really is. START NOW RELATED: Everything We Know About Top Gun: Maverick With Top Gun: Maverick set to bring Cruise back to the big screen along with a new generation of hot shot Navy pilots, the original movie is naturally being revisited (indeed it was recently given a 35th Anniversary re-release in theaters). Producer Bruckheimer was the latest to be asked for his recollections about Top Gun, and he in fact addressed the gay reading of the movie and specifically Tarantino’s monologue. “When you make a movie, people can interpret it in any way they want and see something in it that the filmmakers had no idea they were tapping,” he somewhat diplomatically told Vulture. He went on to talk about Tarantino’s connection to himself and Top Gun director Tony Scott: Tony and Quentin were very good friends. In fact, Quentin came in and helped Tony and myself on Crimson Tide. He came in and wrote a couple of scenes for us. So there was a great camaraderie and respect between Quentin and Tony. Coming from Quentin, it’s always a compliment. Tarantino’s “complimentary” Sleep With Me monologue is delivered by the character of Sid, played by Tarantino himself, during a party where he’s cornered the character of Duane played by Todd Field. Briefly, Sid’s argument is that the character of Maverick is conflicted about his sexuality, and that the entire story of Top Gun is a symbolic tug of war between Val Kilmer’s Iceman (who represents what Sid calls “the gay way”) and Kelly McGillis’ Charlie (who represents “heterosexuality”). Sid points out that at one point Maverick outright rejects Charlie’s sexual advances, and in order to win him, Charlie must dress like Iceman and bring Maverick “back from the gay way.” Sid then recalls that the movie ends with “the gay way” winning as Maverick and Iceman exchange double-entendres about “riding each other’s tails.” Tarantino of course is famous for peppering his movies with such offbeat pop culture breakdowns. Reservoir Dogs famously begins with a whole breakfast scene where the characters argue about the meaning of Madonna’s “Like a Virgin.” There’s another big monologue in Kill Bill Vol. 2 where Bill explains that nebbishy Clark Kent is actually Superman’s critique of humanity. In Inglourious Basterds, Tarantino jazzes up an already tense scene with a game of “Who Am I?” that includes a commentary on the racist subtext of King Kong. It’s of course not exactly revolutionary to suggest Top Gun is secretly a gay film, but Tarantino takes the argument all the way, which makes for an entertaining (if crudely-worded) monologue. It will be interesting to see if the director has any similar thoughts about the subtext lurking within Top Gun: Maverick when it finally arrives in theaters.
  19. The Riddler's creepy mask gets a detailed look in new images from The Batman 2022 calendar. Directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman already stands as one of the most anticipated movies of next year. This project follows in the steps of 2019's Joker, in that it will remain separate from the DCEU. Robert Pattinson plays Bruce Wayne, now within his second year as Gotham's famed Dark Knight. The Batman specifically follows him as a series of gruesome murders rock the city; Reeves has said this film will dig into Batman's skillset as a detective. The Batman also promises to hold an impressive slate of supporting characters, from Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz) to the Penguin (an unrecognizable Colin Farrell). Based on the one trailer that has debuted, the main villain appears to be the Riddler (Paul Dano). In The Batman's world, he goes by his traditional name of Edward Nashton and is the person responsible for the murders. He also wears a mask outfitted with goggles, thus preventing anyone from actually seeing his face. With The Batman still several months away, much of the Riddler's role remains a mystery. Check it out down below. By keeping the Riddler's mask on through all of his appearances so far, it's clear The Batman wishes to keep Dano's full look a secret in the lead-up to the film's premiere. Even if there isn't anything particularly shocking about his appearance without the mask, the mere sight of it is doing wonders to build up anticipation. The Riddler looks terrifying and ominous like this; it's hard not to feel deeply unsettled when looking at him. The Batman is already inching up the tension just with its villain's appearance. The Batman was once scheduled to come out later this year, but it has since been delayed to March 2022. This sadly means it'll likely still be some time before the latest trailer debuts online. It's a good thing, then, that merchandise is still rolling out, thus giving fans some kind of look at the highly-anticipated DC film. Though the promise of Pattinson as Batman is certainly exciting, much of the thrill of The Batman also stems from the Riddler's frightening role within it. Hopefully, new teases about what's to come will emerge soon.
  20. Various MCU enemies could join Baron Zemo’s team of villains, the Thunderbolts, after The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. In the comic books, Helmut Zemo is the founder of the Thunderbolts, as well as the leader of the 1980s incarnation of the Masters of Evil. Similar to his comic book counterpart, the MCU’s take on the classic Captain America villain could put together a group of super-powered criminals at some point in the future. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier ended with Baron Zemo (Daniel Brühl) being put behind bars, but this doesn’t mean his MCU story is over. After all, his impending imprisonment didn’t seem to change his attitude or disappoint him in the least. That could be because Zemo remains confident in his resources and abilities, and that his situation will soon change. If he does obtain his freedom, he could seek out like-minded allies and form a villain team, with the most likely option being the Thunderbolts. In the comics, he brought together Radioactive Man, Moonstone, Beetle, and a few more, and used them to fool the public into thinking that they were heroes. But in the end, his plan worked too well. They embraced their new heroic roles and turned their backs on Zemo. Continue Scrolling To Keep ReadingClick the button below to start this article in quick view. START NOW RELATED: The MCU Secretly Set Up How The Thunderbolts Could Exist If and when the MCU’s Zemo goes on the loose again, he could go a similar path. This direction was made possible when it was revealed that he possesses a great degree of wealth and the financial resources necessary for funding a team. As for who might be on his list of potential recruits, the MCU has no shortage of formidable villains he could turn to. Here are some of the characters who might become a part of Baron Zemo’s Thunderbolts lineup. Batroc Batroc the Leaper presumably died to a gunshot wound from Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp) in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier finale, but his death hasn’t been outright confirmed. If the MCU still has some use for him, it wouldn’t be difficult to engineer his return. As an experienced martial artist skilled enough in close combat to beat Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, the mercenary would be a solid choice for Zemo's Thunderbolts. Scorpion Spider-Man: Homecoming’s Mac Gargan never got to suit up as the Scorpion and fight Peter Parker in the MCU. Unless he appears in Spider-Man: No Way Home, that chance may not come. But, there’s no reason why Scorpion has to be a Spider-Man villain. That’s how he’s traditionally used in the comics, but he does have plenty of history with other heroes, such as Captain America and Daredevil. Also, during his days as the Venom, he operated as a member of the Thunderbolts. While a symbiote may not be in his future in the MCU, a spot on the Thunderbolts roster doesn’t seem impossible. If his freedom were to be secured, he could finally weaponize his Scorpion gear, which was teased in Homecoming. Swordsman A key member of the Thunderbolts in Marvel Comics is Andreas von Strucker aka the Swordsman. This particular version of the sword-wielding villain isn’t around in the MCU, but the original character is confirmed to be on his way to Phase 4 and could be a good fit for the group. As his name implies, Swordsman is one of the most skilled sword-fighters in the Marvel Universe. In the comic books, he was also Hawkeye’s mentor, a supervillain, and an Avenger. In Disney+’s Hawkeye series, he’ll be played by Tony Dalton. If he shares the same skillset as the comic book character, he could be a useful asset to Zemo’s Thunderbolts team. But of course, that would all depend on how his character is utilized and if he survives the events of the series. If Swordsman is still alive after the show ends, Marvel could find a new place for him in the MCU by moving him to a Thunderbolts project. RELATED: Every Upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe Movie Abomination Abomination (Tim Roth) has been off the radar since his first film appearance in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, but he’s expected to be making a long-awaited comeback in Marvel’s She-Hulk show. Whatever the series has planned for him could set up a potential role in the Thunderbolts. The one issue with him is the fact that he was created from a recreation of the super soldier serum. Baron Zemo has made no secret of how he feels about super soldiers, so it’s quite possible that he might pass on recruiting Emil Blonsky. That being said, Zemo might put his reservations aside and go after him anyway, especially if he’s in need of the muscle. Ghost Ghost, who happens to be a longtime Thunderbolt in Marvel Comics, could be linked to the MCU’s interpretation of the team. Hannah John-Kamen’s character has been the subject of numerous Thunderbolts theories in the past, and whether or not she would actually work could be determined by what Zemo plans to do with them. Ant-Man and the Wasp made it clear that Ghost isn’t evil, so there is a limit to what she may be willing to do. But if Zemo’s Thunderbolts are more like anti-heroes than real villains, she could be convinced to join up and use her phasing abilities to assist them in their missions. Loki Perhaps one of the most interesting candidates for the team would be Tom Hiddleston’s Loki. The main version is dead, but there’s a variant of him from a divergent timeline loose in the timestream somewhere. If his time travel exploits end after his Disney+ show, Marvel could strand him on present-day Earth and give him a group of fellow villains to fight alongside in the future. Loki may not be much of a team player, but that could be part of the fun. With his magical expertise, he’d certainly bring a lot to the table. That alone may be the reason why Baron Zemo would consider seeking him out. Taskmaster As a mercenary whose super power allows him to copy any move or skill he sees, Taskmaster would be a perfect addition to any villain team in the MCU. Reportedly, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s Val (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) was supposed to debut in Black Widow, so it could be that her intention is to enlist his aid in the same way that she did with John Walker (Wyatt Russell). But if Val doesn’t snatch up Taskmaster in Black Widow for the Dark Avengers or for some other nefarious purpose, he could be recruited by Zemo for the Thunderbolts instead

We'll have explanations in Fast 9. ... Everybody loves Jason, so why not, right? I've got to include him, right? Hey, if I can die 10 times, he can turn into a good guy from a bad guy. [laughs] It's not that big of a deal, but it's a course correction for the audience. Never dismiss and disrespect the audience. They are the reason why the movies exist, so you can't just ignore them. It's cool and great that a studio like Universal listens, they listen. That's a course correction. That's the justice. There was a backlash in the aftermath of Han's death, but it further intensified in Fate of the Furious when Dom seemingly forgave and accepted Deckard in his crew without so much of an apology for the murder of their long-time teammate. Granted that the older Shaw brother saved his secret son with Elena from Cipher, many thought that the movie should've at least properly discussed Han's car crash. Now that he's back, there's so much anticipation that the much-clamored Justice For Han will finally be achieved one way or another. After all, director Justin Lin admitted that delivering on this idea is one of the main reasons why he wanted to return to The Fast Saga. Whether or not Han finally got justice for what happened to him in Fast & Furious 9 is unknown. As far as official information is, Deckard is not appearing in the upcoming blockbuster, so it's quite difficult to properly hash out the matter without him involved. That said, with Lin still involved in the next two movies in The Fast Saga, it's possible that this plotline will play out throughout them. By then, perhaps Jason Statham can find himself back in the main narrative.
  22. Crawl 2 may tell a totally new story with new characters teases director Alexandre Aja. Starring Kaya Scodelario and Barry Pepper, 2019’s Crawl told the story of a swimming prodigy returning to her Florida home town in the middle of a category 5 hurricane only to find herself in a fight for survival when a trio of massive alligators invaded her father’s flooded house. On paper this may have seemed an unlikely film to score with audiences, given its old school and arguably quaintly simplistic human vs. nature plot. But classic Jaws-style monster movie thrills must have been exactly what audiences wanted in summer of 2019 as the movie grossed $92 million worldwide on a budget of just $13.5 million. Crawl hit such a cinematic sweet spot among fans of B-movie horror that even aficionado Quentin Tarantino himself spoke up to praise Aja’s effort. Continue Scrolling To Keep ReadingClick the button below to start this article in quick view. START NOW RELATED: Why Crawl's Darker Original Ending Was A Missed Opportunity With Aja back in movie fans’ sights again after the arrival of his twisty Netflix thriller Oxygen, the director recently had occasion to discuss plans for a possible Crawl sequel. Appearing on Bloody Disgusting’s Tales From the Boo Crew podcast, Aja confirmed that there have been talks about Crawl 2 and even gave some details on what the new movie might look like. Unfortunately for fans of Scodelario’s performance in the first movie, it doesn’t seem the character of Haley would be brought back for the sequel. Aja said (via ComicBook.com): "I think the story of Haley is a really strong one, but I believe that Crawl is about nature taking back its due, and kind of like… more hurricane driven, man versus animal. So maybe it will be another story altogether... We’re looking for that human story right now, that will be as strong as the one in the first one. To make the second one legit." Indeed it might be a stretch to bring back Scodelario’s Haley for another round of battle against hurricanes and alligators, just as it was a huge stretch to bring back the Brody family for multiple Jaws sequels. The sharks vs. Brodys premise of the Jaws series in fact became such a reach that by Jaws: The Revenge it had crossed the boundary into the utterly ridiculous and surreal. So, leaving Haley on the sidelines for Crawl 2 would seemingly be the prudent move to make. Aja’s reasoning for wanting to leave the main character of Crawl behind and start over with a totally new story tackling the same humans vs. nature theme of the original is sound enough. However, it must also be said that Scodelario’s presence added a lot to the first movie as she gave a strong and grounding performance amid all the insane chaos. If Aja wants to make Crawl 2 work with a new story, he must find a lead performer who can grab the audience as effectively as Scodelario did in the original. Of course Aja frequently has strong female characters at the center of his films, as he does again with the Melanie Laurent-led Oxygen. Indeed between Crawl and Oxygen, Aja has become something of a master of female-led survival stories. That being the case, there’s reason for horror fans to be excited for what Aja might do with Crawl 2.
  23. A new piece of The Batman tie-in merchandise reveals the best look at Robert Pattinson's Batsuit. Following a tumultuous production process due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Matt Reeves project eventually finished filming and is now in post-production. That also means that Warner Bros. is gearing up to properly begin marketing the project as evidenced by tie-in items popping out. Specific plot details for the movie are still under wraps, but Reeves has been more than generous in offering information about the overall setting of The Batman. The movie will see Bruce Wayne in his second year as the Caped Crusader. It's also been revealed that the blockbuster would explore the corruption in Gotham how the Waynes supposedly connect to all of this. It's worth noting, however, that the events of the movie will be separate from the main DCEU. Instead, it will reportedly be on Earth-2 despite initially being a project for Ben Affleck's Bat of Gotham. START NOW RELATED: The Batman: Everything We Know About Robert Pattinson's Batcave Shared by Reddit user with the handle u/TheLoganDickinson is an image for the tie-in The Batman calendar which features Pattinson's Caped Crusader on the cover. It offers the best look at his Batsuit (at least from the waist up) thus far, with the lighting highlighting the details in its chest piece all the way to the shoulder pads and cowl. Check it out below: Pattinson and Reeves' collaboration also boasts a star-studded ensemble that includes Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Colin Farrell as the Penguin, and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth. While it will be separate from the main DCEU continuity, it would allow The Batman to create its own shared universe, with its HBO Max spinoff Gotham P.D. already in development. Considering how early the film is set in the titular character's arc, chances are that Pattinson will inhabit the character for several years which would allow Warner Bros. to tell an overarching narrative. This is also the reason why this version of Bruce Wayne can eventually debut a brand new Batsuit at the end of The Batman. At this point in his personal journey as the Bat of Gotham, he supposedly feels helpless as his efforts are not nearly enough to instigate the change he wants to see in Gotham. As he goes through the trials and tribulations set on his path by the Riddler, who's tipped to be the primary villain of the story, chances are that he will emerge as a better version of the superhero he wants to be. In any case, considering his unlimited resources, it makes sense for the Bat of Gotham to keep on updating his armor.
  24. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It director Michael Chaves explains why this third installment needed to be different from the horror franchise's past movies. Ever since 2013, the Conjuring universe has been a mainstay of the horror genre. Initially focusing on the cases of real life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga), The Conjuring produced several spin-offs, from the Annabelle franchise to The Nun. While Wilson and Farmiga made appearances in 2019's Annabelle Comes Home, The Conjuring 3 will be their first proper franchise return since The Conjuring 2 in 2016. Continue Scrolling To Keep ReadingClick the button below to start this article in quick view. START NOW The first two Conjuring films largely focused on haunted house tales, but The Devil Made Me Do It is taking a different track. It is once again based on one of the Warrens' real life cases: The trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson (Ruairi O'Connor). Johnson was tried for murder, but pled guilty on the grounds that he was possessed by a demon. The Conjuring 3 will follow the Warrens as they are tasked with investigating the truth behind his claim. RELATED: The Conjuring 3 True Story: Every Change Confirmed So Far At a press conference for The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, Chaves discussed why this third film needed to branch out from the Warrens' previous big screen adventures. When it comes to The Conjuring proper, Chaves takes over from James Wan, who helmed the first two movies. However, that directing change isn't the only difference between installments, as Chaves explained why they decided to break out from the familiar Conjuring mold: "For any franchise to seem fresh or be fresh there needs to invention and reinvention, and we wanted to tell a Conjuring story but in a way we haven't seen before. This is in a lot of ways, y'know, more a supernatural thriller. We're taking the Warrens on the road, and you said it's "one of their darkest cases". Y'know, these are always marketed as 'the darkest Conjuring film', and I think in so many ways this really is. When you really look at the case, it's one of their most controversial cases and I think the whole thing is just so fascinating." Chaves' assertion that all franchises need to embrace reinvention is a correct one. Yes, audiences are drawn to a property because of something familiar, but that doesn't mean projects should stay the same forever. Franchises that take swings and try new things live longer than those that remain in the same place. Chaves previously explained why The Conjuring 3 would be moving away from haunted houses, and it's much of the same: The previous Conjuring movies have done the haunted house plot before. Now, The Devil Made Me Do It can inject fresh life into this beloved horror world. The Warrens embarked on several spine-tingling cases, and it remains to be seen if any more of them will be brought to the big screen beyond The Conjuring 3. Should this be the last one, it's fitting that the franchise will end with what is being described as the Conjuring's darkest installment yet. The tale of a murder suspect claiming demonic possession led to his crime is a compelling one, and it certainly takes the Warrens into new territory. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It promises to be a fresh take for this universe, and that's a thrilling thing.
  25. John Boyega will return as Moses, his breakout role from 2011's Attack the Block, in the upcoming sequel, Attack the Block 2, along with the original film's director, Joe Cornish. The 2011 film follows Boyega's Moses as he unites his South London neighborhood to defend their block from a group of alien invaders. The film underperformed at the box office during its initial release, however, it quickly achieved cult classic status following Boyega's rise to fame from the Star Wars trilogy. The British filmmaker previously worked as a co-writer on The Adventures of Tin-Tin before writing and directing Attack the Block. Cornish's direction received high praise at the time of the film's release, particularly for his ability to balance the blending genres of a science-fiction, action-comedy-horror-film. Additionally, the film was produced by Nira Park and James Wilson, while Cornish's friend and frequent collaborator, Edgar Wright, executively produced. RELATED: Every Upcoming John Boyega Movie & TV Show Boyega, Cornish, Park and Wilson will all be returning for Attack the Block 2, with Boyega joining the producing team under his company, UpperRoom Productions. While the film's plot is still very much under wraps, Boyega spoke with Deadline about his excitement to return as Moses, saying: It’s been a decade since Attack The Block was released and so much has changed since then. I’m excited to see this heightened story return to the streets of London. Moses has remained one of my favourite characters to play and bringing him back is a huge honour. Cornish, who most recently directed 2019's The Kid Who Would Be King, also spoke to Deadline about how special it is to be returning to such beloved material. He even teased that the second installment will be "even bigger" than the first. Read Cornish's full quote below: I’m thrilled we’re officially announcing our return to the world of Attack The Block on the tenth anniversary of the film’s release. I can’t wait to work alongside John again, bringing audiences an even bigger slice of inner-city alien action. Attack the Block 2 will be a highly anticipated sequel, especially after Boyega's acclaimed performance in Steve McQueen's 2020 anthology film series, Small Axe. The actor starred in the Red, White and Blue chapter of the film series where he portrayed Leroy Logan, the founder of the UK's Black Police Association. Boyega received numerous award nominations for his role in the film, including a win at the 78th Annual Golden Globes. Other than Boyega, there aren't any details as to who else may reprise their roles from the original film. Fans of the film will certainly plea for Nick Frost to make a return in Attack the Block 2. Frost played Ron, a local drug dealer and comedic relief who, alongside Boyega's Moses, is initially wrongly blamed for the deaths around the block. Frost is a long time friend of Cornish, so there is still hope that he will reprise his role in the upcoming Attack the Block 2.
