  1. I've long been a proponent of high refresh rate monitors. Sure, 4K sounds like a good time, but after spending big on a ROG Swift 165Hz monitor a few years ago, I'm not sure I could go back. Maybe I could go forward, though, as I'm definitely tempted by the ROG Swift PG259QN—the 360Hz younger cousin of my increasingly aging screen. Especially when a Black Friday deal on one of our best gaming monitors makes it available for its lowest ever price, on sale at Amazon for $490. This is the first time the price has dropped below the $500 mark—at the start of the year it was going for $700, so this is really nice saving on a monitor full of bells and whistles. It's a 24.5", 1080p IPS panel. Traditionally, IPS has meant better colours at the cost of lower response times, but Asus claims its "Fast IPS" tech means a 1ms response time. The real meat here is the G-Sync functionality, providing 360Hz refresh rates. Do you need a display that fast? Certainly not if your graphics card isn't up to the task—if you're already struggling to hit a stable 60fps in modern games, then you're not going to see the difference on screen. If you've managed to get hold of one of the newer RTX 30-series cards, though, you may well get the benefit. And if you haven't upgraded your monitor for a while, you'll be amazed at what a difference it can make. For me, I'd still be more tempted by the 32", 1440p variant—even though it's 'only' 175Hz, that's still more than fast enough for my mid-30s mental response time, and the extra resolution feels the ideal size for gaming at a desk. Alas, that one doesn't seem to be going cheap in this year's Black Friday deals. This, then, is a great alte
  2. If you're looking for an RTX 3080 gaming PC deal, this Absolute Battlestations pre-built machine is the whole package for $2,699. While 30-series Nvidia GPUs are still difficult to get your hands on, finding a full machine with the GPU you want is a good way to go. With this particular early Black Friday deal build, you'll be future-proofing your entire setup, not just snagging a new GPU. This build is on a $600 discount, with the headline component of course being that GeForce RTX 3080. Even without Cyberpunk 2077 looming over us like last year, it feels like everyone is still scrambling to get their hands on the 30-series GPUs this season. No surprise, as its still the best graphics card for your gaming PC. Going with a pre-built machine isn't a bad strategy if you've been considering multiple upgrades alongside a new graphics card. It is worth noting that ABS say the brand may vary on which 3080 GPU you get included with your system. Not a huge concern perhaps, but you should be aware that you won't know exactly which manufacturer's card will show up in your case. The nice thing about this particular pre-built deal is that you're getting several future-proof components alongside the GPU. You aren't getting yourself upside down in a system that still wants for better parts just to nab one of the 30-series cards. In particular, that 32GB of DDR4 RAM should keep primed to game for several years. Even if you're planning to play the new crafting survival game Icarus in December, which wildly recommends 32GB of RAM. Alongside that pile of RAM, the 1TB M.2 SSD is also a good get. It's a decent bit of space to work with for having your favorite big games installed. For a handy $600 off, this is a good all around system if you're looking to do a full upgrade this year.
  3. Popular photo-editing app Paint.Net is dropping support for Windows 7, and Windows 8.1. The app will be limited to 64-bit on Windows 10 and Windows 11 heading into the future, the developer announced recently. According to Rick Brewster, the developer of the app, Paint.Net v4.3.x will be the last release that works on Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or on any 32-bit or x86 version of Windows. This is because it has become more difficult and time-consuming to support these older versions of Windows. This move should not be too surprising. Microsoft has been pushing developers to build modern 64-bit-only apps, and the Windows 11 operating system is 64-bit only, without a 32-bit flavor. Even Apple dropped support for 32-bit apps starting with MacOS Catalina in 2019. Brewster says that interest in the 32-bit version of the app is low. “Not very many people are using them, and I can no longer justify the cost and frustration of keeping support for these afloat,” writes Rick Brewster, Paint.Net developer. Aside from the compatibility change, the rendering and startup performance of the application has also been improved in the latest release. The developer migrated the app over to .Net 6, which improved both rendering and startup performance. Other changes include improvements for dark mode and the removal of memory leaks. There are also three new translations and many bug fixes that impact the overall performance of the app. Paint.Net is a lot like Adobe Photoshop, but it has a more intuitive and innovative user interface with support for layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools. The app is also backed by an online community that often provides help, tutorials, and plug-ins. Many artists and illustrators frequently compare the apps to Paint Shop Pro, Microsoft Photo Editor, and even GIMP. It was originally intended as a replacement for the built-in paint tool in Windows but has now evolved into something much bigger. You can buy Paint.Net today for $7 from the Microsoft Store. The app is also available for free. All purchases made through the Microsoft Store help support development efforts.

  8. Windows 11 began its rollout to eligible devices on Oct. 5, meaning that Windows 10 is slowly on the way out. But, that doesn't mean Microsoft's older operating system is obsolete yet. In fact, Windows 10 November 2021 update is now available. And, "at least one version of" Windows 10 will run through Oct. 14, 2025, said John Cable, vice president of program management at Microsoft, in a November blog post. If you're wondering how long you actually have to make the switch to Windows 11 and how long you can safely wait before updating, you've come to the right place. I'll also explain how to download Windows 11, how to tell whether your computer is compatible and who gets the update for free. Read on for everything you need to know about the end of Windows 10 support and prepping for Windows 11. When is Microsoft ending support for Windows 10, and why? Support for Windows 10 will end on Oct. 14, 2025. That means Microsoft will no longer provide security patches or feature updates for the Home, Pro, Enterprise, Pro Education and Pro for Workstations editions at this time -- affecting virtually all Windows 10 users. (The only people who have until 2029 are the few Windows 10 Enterprise Long Term Support Channel users.) This doesn't come as a surprise: Microsoft has a long-established Fixed Lifestyle Policy for many of its products. For each version of its OS, the company offers a minimum of 10 years of support (at least five years of mainstream support like security updates and no-charge incident support, followed by five years of extended support like paid troubleshooting). Windows 10 was released in July 2015, so its 10-year life cycle will have come to a close by October 2025. Here's everything you need to know about the end of Windows 10 support. Do I have to make the switch to Windows 11? Will my Windows 10 computer stop working after Microsoft pulls support? You'll still be able to use your Windows 10 computer the same way you have been, just like a lot of people are still using Windows 7 or Windows 8, though Microsoft pulled support for both of those in recent years. However, once support ends, you won't get any security updates, which could leave your computer vulnerable -- many forms of malware target Windows devices. If you don't want to stop using your Windows 10 machine after support ends in 2025, there are certain steps you can take to better secure it. Will my computer be able to run Windows 11? It depends. If you recently bought a new PC, that computer should be able to run Windows 11. To see if your current Windows 10 PC is eligible for the free upgrade to Windows 11, go to Microsoft's website for a list of requirements. The easiest way to find out is to download the PC Health Check app to check if your machine is compatible. Alternatively, you can use another open-source app called WhyNotWin11 to see if your device is compatible. Plus, here's how to check some hardware compatibility with Windows 11 without either tool. How do I upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11? How much will it cost me? If you're already a Windows 10 user and have a compatible computer, Windows 11 will appear as a free upgrade for your machine once it becomes available for you. Microsoft's new OS is gradually rolling out between now and mid-2022. Once Windows 11 becomes available for you, you'll download it the same way you would any new version of Windows. Most users will go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and click Check for Updates. If available, you'll see Feature update to Windows 11. Click Download and install. (Here's more information on how to download Windows 11. If you haven't yet upgraded to Windows 10, you may still be able to download Windows 10 free, too -- here's how.) What's the difference between Windows 10 and Windows 11, anyway? Windows 11 gets a new visual design and several new features that aim to make navigating your computer easier, whether for personal use, work or both. Here are some of the biggest changes in Windows 11: A new, more Mac-like interface: Windows 11 features a clean design with rounded corners, pastel shades and a centered Start menu and Taskbar. Integrated Android apps: Android apps will be coming to Windows 11 and installable from within the new Microsoft Store via the Amazon Appstore. (There were a couple of ways to access Android apps on Windows 10, including if you had a Samsung Galaxy phone, but this will make it native.) Microsoft Teams integration: Teams is getting a face-lift and will be integrated directly into the Windows 11 Taskbar, making it easier to access (and a bit more like Apple's FaceTime). You'll be able to access Teams from Windows, Mac, Android or iOS. Better virtual desktop support: Windows 11 will let you set up virtual desktops in a way that's more similar to MacOS, toggling between multiple desktops for personal, work, school or gaming use. Easier transition from monitor to laptop, and better multitasking: The new OS includes features called Snap Groups and Snap Layouts -- collections of the apps you're using at once that sit in the Taskbar, and can come up or be minimized at the same time for easier task switching. They also let you plug and unplug from a monitor more easily without losing where your open windows are located. Widgets: While they've been around for a while (remember desktop gadgets on Windows Vista?), including in a recent Windows 10 update, you can now access widgets directly from the Taskbar and personalize what they show. Xbox tech for better gaming: Windows 11 will get certain features found in Xbox consoles, like Auto HDR and DirectStorage, to improve gaming on your Windows PC. We broke down all of the biggest differences between Windows 10 and Windows 11 here. We've also got a guide to all of the best new Windows 11 features and how you'll use them. For more details, check out every feature we wanted in Windows 11 but didn't get and how to use Android apps on Windows 10 right now.
  9. Sony has unlocked the extra M.2 SSD slot inside the PlayStation 5. The rules are tricky, but these specific drives should all work. Sony PlayStation 5 owners who are running out of storage space will now find it easier to add extra storage. That's because the PS5's extra internal M.2 SSD slot is now open for business, as long as you have a compatible drive. Previously, that was only available to those with the beta version of Sony's PlayStation OS. Before this, and before the beta, you could still add an external drive for PS4 games, but could only play PS4 games from it. PS5 games could be stored on an external drive, but not played. Read more: PS5 review: Exclusive games power Sony's sky-high space-age console These super fast M.2 drives are quite hard to find right now, especially ones with a built-in heatsink. That's required to prevent overheating, so if your drive doesn't have one, you'll have to add it manually. For those who already have an M.2 drive in hand, check out our how-to-install video below: Sony has listed some specific guidelines as to what types of drives the PS5 will support, but not specific model recommendations. Based on the published specs, however, the SSD drive options listed below should all work. We're in the process of testing some of them, including the 4TB Seagate FireCuda 530, which we installed in this how-to feature. Samsung 980 Pro with Heatsink M.2 SSD This is the configuration a lot of people have been waiting for. It's available in 1TB ($250) and 2TB capacities ($450).
  10. The best shot at getting a console this week is happening today, but only if you prepare ahead of time. Ready to get in on a PS5 restock? Walmart has what you need today. The website has broadcasted a PS5 restock for both the Digital and Standard edition of the consoles starting this afternoon, but there's a catch. You need to be a Walmart Plus subscriber to be able to make the purchase, and unlike other restocks from Walmart you can't just use the free trial of this subscription service to get access. As long as you're a paid Walmart Plus subscriber, you will be able to get in line to get a console starting at 4 p.m. ET (1 p.m. PT). Getting in on a PlayStation 5 restock can be messy and frustrating, especially if you've been through a couple and still not been able to get your hands on one. Over the last year, the biggest retailers have made a lot of changes to the checkout process in an effort to both offer peace of mind and keep bots from buying all of the consoles and selling them for more somewhere else. The most recent change we've seen in the PS5 restock game has been paid access, meaning you buy a subscription and one of the perks is you get in on the next PS5 restock either earlier than anyone else or exclusively for your club. After a few weeks of this new system rolling out across GameStop, Best Buy, Walmart and even Amazon in some cases, the one thing we can say for sure is it's still not guaranteed you will get a console through these systems. The queue fills up fast for all of them, and consoles remain in stock for only minutes in many cases. Every time a PS5 restock happens, social media fills with people describing how they experienced glitches in the process and the consoles ended up being gone entirely. It's unreasonable to sign up and pay for every service, but that's where we can help. We're constantly tracking the best way for you to get your hands on a PS5, and there are plenty of things you can do to increase your odds before the buy button lights up. Check it out below.
