  1. Warner Bros. has just released the first two posters for "Jupiter Ascending," the newest movie from the Wachowskis ("The Matrix"), each of which features one of the attractive leads in front of very stylized, sci-fi and fantasy heavy backdrops. The film takes place in the future, and stars Channing Tatum as Caine, an ex-military bounty hunter sent to find Mila Kunis' Jupiter Jones, a normal girl with a special secret that makes her a target for some very powerful people. Tatum's poster is most striking, as we see the movie star tatted up — if "Cloud Atlas" and this are any indications, the Wachowskis love their tattoos — holding a big gun in a black leather outfit that is one part Han Solo and one part, well, "Magic Mike." Behind Tatum in a number of golden spheres are enough sci-fi staples to make fans of "The Matrix" blush. On the upper left-hand corner is what looks to be a sinister alien, while the bottom right features some kind of robotic armored suit, similar to the suits from the Wachowskis' own "Matrix Revolutions." Clearly, the Wachowskis are promising some big-time sci-fi action. Kunis, meanwhile, has the more grounded poster. While Tatum looks like someone out of an old sci-fi serial, Kunis' character is dressed very simply, in a blue and white plaid shirt and black jeans. Kunis too stands in front of golden spheres, which depict a sprawling metropolitan landscape, an old ballroom and what looks like a Queen out of a fantasy movie standing on a ledge above her people. And does her costume seem vaguely reminiscent of a certain other regular girl taken to a strange, magical land of Oz? Hmmm... If the movie delivers on the promise of the posters, it'll be one heck of a spectacle. Check back with MTV News at 7:30 p.m. E.T. for a look at the brand new "Jupiter Ascending" trailer. source:mtv
  2. All it takes is just 15 seconds of a new Justin Bieber song to get everyone talking. Last week, the Biebs dropped a snippet of a new track on Instagram, and though we couldn't hear much, we did hear DJ Mustard's signature drop at the top of the bassy tune. "I haven't heard the full record yet, but I think it's dope. I think Justin Bieber should let me executive produce his album," Mustard told MTV News before letting out a hearty laugh. DJ Mustard Wants To Produce Justin Bieber's Album On Tuesday, YG and his production partner DJ Mustard visited MTV News to record a track-by-track breakdown of My Krazy Life, which will air on Wednesday's (March 26) episode of "RapFix Live" at 4 p.m. on MTV.com and MTV Jams. Mustard says he was just as surprised as the fans when JB teased the track last week. The unnamed song starts with the producer's famous "Mustard on the beat, ho" signature drop before JB starts singing: "It's crazy when you're in the club/ And hear your song/ And ready to turn up." The Los Angeles producer has amassed a number of hits since 2010. Mustard broke through with Tyga's double-platinum standout "Rack City" and since delivered winning tracks to 2 Chainz ("I'm Different"), Young Jeezy ("R.I.P.") and Trey Songz ("Na Na"). In January, Mustard revealed that he is going to be working on Rihanna's new album as well. : Most recently, Mustard produced eight of the 14 tracks on YG's My Krazy Life. He tells MTV News that these days, he's more into producing entire albums than hit singles. If given the chance to be more involved with Bieber, he has big plans. "I wouldn't really even know what to expect, but I just know the sound that we create would be crazy. You remember when Justin Timberlake and Timbaland got together? Similar to that," he said. "I'm not trying to compare us or nothing like that, but it could be similar to that. source:mtv
  3. Rixton were almost left with two problems on their hands: a broken heart and an empty wallet. In their latest music video for "Me and My Broken Heart," the foursome — Jake Roche, Danny Wilkin, Lewi Morgan and Charley Bagnall — take fans on a wild ride filled with a sneaky con artist and a shady poker match, all while teaching a valuable lesson: Don't ever trust someone you just met with a bag full of $10,000 in cash. Rixton - "Me And My Broken Heart (Official)" Each of the guys gets played by a different con artist (the same attractive woman wearing different wigs) as she makes it seem she's interested in them — but, really, she's just in it for the money. The woman lures the boys individually to a shady boxing ring where a poker game is set up. In the middle of trying to get the best hand, the sneaky scammer switches the bag of cash for a bag filled with paper. "This girl kind of sets us up, and we invest our own money in a poker game, and we get set up, ripped off," lead singer Roche told MTV News on the set of "Me and My Broken Heart." "We wanted to make a Guy Ritchie-type film and get our acting heads on." While his bandmates fall for her trick, Roche saves the day, catching the thief in action and returning their loot. Do Rixton Get Naked In Their Video For 'Me And My Broken Heart'? The song, which takes on a Maroon 5 vibe, is the first official single from the U.K. MTV Artist to Watch, who recently released their first EP. The song and video certainly take on a more mature feel than their previous effort, "Make Out," which is exactly why they released it. "It's just totally the opposite of 'Make Out': I am not naked and swinging on a wrecking ball. That would be weird," Roche said. Morgan added, "I don't think we wanted to ever step away from that ['Make Out' video]. We more wanted to show everybody a different side of us. We are still a lot of fun." source:mtv
  4. Chief Keef is in police custody once again, though it is unclear whether the Chicago rapper will actually be charged with a crime. The "I Don't Like" spitter was reportedly present during a shooting in a home on Happ Road in Northfield, Illinois that landed someone in the hospital on Wednesday morning (March 26). Keef's lawyer confirmed with TMZ.com that he was present during the shooting, but maintains CK wasn't the shooter. The rapper was taken into police custody however according to a report on Complex.com. MTV News reached out to the Northfield Police department, who told us that a special task force was currently investigating the crime. Details are still sketchy, but WGN in Chicago is reporting that the house where the shooting occurred is believed to be the home of Keef's manager. Following the incident, police set up a blockade for as many as six blocks. The unidentified victim is said to be in intensive care. On Tuesday, just a day before the shooting, Keef posed on his Instagram page holding a firearm. Keef was recently released from a drug rehab center and, according to TMZ, was arrested while on March 5 and charged with a DUI, driving with a suspended license and having no proof of insurance. source:mtv
  5. Today Sony published a master list of the 100+ PlayStation 4 games that will be available on the platform by the end of the year. The list includes previously released titles like Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes and Thief, as well as much-anticipated upcoming games like Destiny and Assassin's Creed Unity. Notably, Evolution Studios' racing game Driveclub is listed as "TBA." The last we heard, Sony took the game "back to the drawing board." The list also does not include this year's Call of Duty title from Sledgehammer Games, but that's probably because Activision has yet to announce platforms for the new game. Keep in mind that the release dates for upcoming games is subject to change. But with that caveat out of the way, check out the full list below. Out Now: Awesomenauts Assemble! 6. A Facebook spokesperson has denied yesterday's New York Times report that claimed the social networking company was planning to redesign the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset to feature the Facebook interface and logo. Facebook has "no plans" to rebrand the device, the spokesperson told re/code. Right now, the only version of Oculus Rift available is the development kit; the consumer version will come sometime in the future. Mark Zuckerberg's social networking company bought Oculus VR yesterday in a surprise deal worth an estimated $2 billion. According to executives at Oculus VR, the deal was completed in just three days. In the wake of the deal, Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson canceled a VR version of the sandbox game and Kickstarter backers raged against the sale. Oculus Rift creator Luckey says he's hearing more positive feedback than negative and believes coming together with Facebook is the right move to help VR go mainstream. source:gamespot
  7. Despite losing its game director and layoffs at developer Evolution Studios, PlayStation 4 racing game Driveclub is making "spectacular progress," Sony has confirmed. A Sony Computer Entertainment Europe spokesperson told Videogamer that development on the game is "going from strength to strength" and that recent staff changes do not affect development. "We have full confidence that the game will deliver on its PS4 promise to be the first truly socially connected racing title and we are very pleased and excited by the calibre of work from Evolution Studios," the Sony representative said. "The progress being made on the game is spectacular," the representative added. "So we're looking forward to sharing an update on development, release date, and videos of the game in action in the weeks to come. We thank you for your patience and assure you, it will be worth the wait." Driveclub was originally a PS4 launch title, but Sony later delayed the game...but not because of experimentation with virtual reality headset Project Morpheus. Though game director Col Rodgers has left Sony, a new director for the game will be announced "soon," Sony said source:gamespot
  8. You'll have to wait until April 6 to watch the first episode in the fourth season of HBO's Game of Thrones series, but starting today, you can play Game of Thrones Ascent. Developed by Disruptor Beam and originally released on Facebook, Kongregate, and other online platforms last year, the social game is now available for iPad through iTunes. Based on HBO's show and the works of George R.R. Martin, Game of Thrones Ascent lets players lead the life of a noble of Westeros. You can play with (or against) other players in a "persistent, authentic world." In-game content from the show's new season will be available every Monday following each new episode. Game of Thrones Ascent features "thousands" of story-based quests, and players can also partake in Alliance challenges that task players with working alongside others to accomplish "great tasks" and rise to the top of leaderboards. The game has been optimized for the iPad's Retina display, and also includes Game Center and iOS 7 compatibility and support. Game of Thrones Ascent also features an updated user interface and "improved user flow." More than 2 million people have already played Game of Thrones Ascent, Disruptor Beam CEO and founder Jon Radoff said in a statement. “We recognize that tablets are actually where so many Game of Thrones fans are either reading the books or watching the TV show,” he said. Game of Thrones Ascent will be available on Android "in the near future." The Walking Dead developer Telltale Games is also working on a Game of Thrones title, though it's unclear when the first installment in this series will debut. source:gamespot
  9. Some tech industry deals take months to finalize, but Facebook's $2 billion purchase of Oculus VR was completed in just 72 hours, Oculus VR CEO Brendan Iribe said in a new interview. "We got the deal done with Facebook in three days. That's how accelerated it was. We locked ourselves up in the Facebook HQ and did the deal," Iribe told VentureBeat. "I have been through a few of these deals now and they usually take months. This was done in three days. That's incredible. That's their commitment to moving fast. We are moving fast and getting together to make the next computing platform." Facebook's buyout of Oculus VR breaks down to $400 million in cash and $1.6 billion worth of Facebook shares. Oculus VR is also eligible for another $300 million in performance-based bonuses. Though the deal to sell Oculus VR to Facebook was completed in three days, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg's interest in the virtual reality technology dates back quite a while. "At one point, we were introduced to Mark Zuckerberg. He was really interested in what we were doing. He was fascinated like other people in the geek community, or gaming community," Iribe said. "He was really excited about how we were making this thing work. He wanted me to show him the demo at Facebook. I told him there was a better demo down here in Irvine. He was able to hop on a flight down. He met the team. He saw the latest demos. We talked about the vision. The whole thing was about getting more comfortable with each other and the vision and becoming friends. He and I got to be really good friends, and Palmer met him, too. And then he asked, 'How can I help? How can Facebook help you?'" Iribe recalled that he described the company's vision for what Oculus Rift could become, and then Zuckerberg brought up the idea of a partnership. "'What if we partner with you? You stay the same. Stay who you are. You expand that vision and focus on other things also. Gaming is core. But how can we help and invest significantly into the platform, the hardware, and bring down the cost of it. We could make it more optimized, do custom silicon, make this even better. What if we also invest in the parts so you can sell the virtual reality platform at cost?,'" Iribe recalls Zuckerberg saying. "It would use the best components and build a superior technology platform. Then let’s sell it at cost." Also in the interview, 21-year-old Oculus Rift creator Palmer Luckey acknowledged that the partnership of Oculus VR and Facebook does not make as much sense, right now at least, as Facebook's other recent acquisitions of WhatsApp and Instagram. However, Luckey said he expects people to better understand the role Facebook will play in the future of virtual reality as time progresses and certain announcements are made. "We're going to have more good news about what we will be able to do now. We are working with Facebook, and we can't announce it yet," Luckey said. "Every developer we are working with has had a very positive reaction. My inbox is flooded by email. A huge number of developers. Some people are upset. But the vast majority who are actually software developers see why this is a good thing." One prominent developer who is upset over the Facebook buyout of Oculus VR is Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson, who canceled a VR version of Minecraft after the deal was announced. Luckey says he hopes Notch will return once the dust settles. "Notch is an exception to the rule. After he sees everything we are able to do, I hope he will change his mind," Luckey said. Since the acquisition was announced yesterday, many backers of the Oculus Rift's original Kickstarter campaign have spoken out to criticize the sale. For his part, Luckey responded to many of these claims in a series of posts on Reddit yesterday and continuing today. source:gamespot
  10. Ever since Braid twisted the damsel-in-distress trope almost six years ago, puzzle platformers have been churned out by more small-scale studios than I can count. We've seen Limbo, Closure, Vessel, The Swapper, Stealth Inc, Fez, Lost in Shadows, Thomas Was Alone, and Dokuro. The list goes on and on and on. And if that list of recently released games doesn't seem long enough, I played two more upcoming entries last week. Metrico is an inventive delight as I showcased in my video preview, and Monochroma kept me riveted during the hour I spent exploring its enticing world. What's fascinating to me is how developers keep shaking up familiar themes to deliver something I have never seen before. My colleagues glimpsed Monochroma before I did and relayed that it was similar to Limbo. And, in a way, this is a good comparison. By utilizing a black-and-white aesthetic, it echoes the lonely and dreary journey of Limbo, and because you also embody a young boy in it, it reexamines the feeling of being a weak person in a hostile land. Even the way you move through the industrial environments mirrors what Limbo first achieved. You run in a clumsy, deliberate manner that's atypical within the power fantasies that dominate the gaming landscape. Plus, you can only jump, push boxes, and flip switches as you try to wind your way through the dangerous world without being captured by opposing forces or caught within a deadly trap. Sounds exactly like Limbo, right? Well, not quite. In Monochroma, not only must you protect your own health, but you're in charge of your brother's survival as well. And he's not like the younger part of the team in Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, either, who walks past dying giants and explores a castle high up in the clouds without making a mess in his pants. Your sibling in Monochroma is completely helpless, which makes the adventure a giant escort mission. Don't worry, though. You won't be frustrated like you were in the notorious Goldeneye 007 mission when you were forced to protect Natalya from the Russian soldiers. And there aren't shadow monsters to fend off like we saw in Ico, either. Escorting in Monochroma is closer to traveling alongside Ellie in The Last of Us, only you have to put just a little more thought into the living baggage you carry with you. What's fascinating to me is how developers keep shaking up familiar themes to deliver something I have never seen before. Your brother cannot walk and is terribly frightened of the dark. So you venture forth with him on your back, and you set him down in the safe glow of streetlights when he becomes too heavy. Once he's out of the way, you can jump much higher than you could before, which lets you leap unhindered from boxes or clamber up unreachable paths while your flesh and blood waits for you to return. This system doesn't add much to the puzzle-solving foundation. You need only keep your eyes peeled for the lone light source within an area and remember to return when you've cleared a path. What carrying your brother does do is strengthen the bond between these two characters. Because he was in my charge, I automatically felt like a protector, and that added responsibility gave more weight to my cause. Narrative is the area where Monochroma establishes its most obvious separation from Limbo. Whereas Limbo had a setting though no story to speak of, Monochroma does have a tale to tell, albeit one without dialogue. It's a game that takes a look at the pervasive consumerism that has infected our culture. What happens when a corporation gains too much power? Yes, it's ironic that another thing that you have to buy is examining our obsession with material goods, but it still adds another layer of interest to your plight. And that's the beauty of this diverse genre. Although so many puzzle platformers are 2D adventures in which modest movesets are explored through various puzzling traps, the manner in which these objectives are experienced is remarkably different. Monochroma has a different appeal than Limbo. It fosters a serious relationship and has something to say about the world at large. Instead of venturing through an abstract nightmare, you inhabit reality, and that not only ties in to the narrative themes but differentiates the action as well. Physics determine your every action, and because objects and people act as they would in our everyday life, it furthers the argument that this is a real situation you must respect. When I climbed upon a box held up by a rope, I was shocked when the box plunged through a wooden plank into the icy water below. I had expected its behavior to be more forgiving, so when the box instead exhibited real gravity, I was too slow to react. Monochroma substitutes the fantasy that's so dominant in this space with a grounded, relatable reality. Monochroma offers a delicious twists to what we've seen before through its marriage of narrative and mechanics, which raises it above the mere clone that it could be labeled as. It builds on Limbo in such interesting ways that the comparison left my mind soon after I manned the keyboard. It proves that games provide much more than their basic mechanics reveal, and that interesting stories can unfold without even a word being uttered. I look forward to seeing what other unique aspects Monochroma has in store when it comes out in the next month or so. source:gamespot
  11. Financial results published by anti-piracy group Rightscorp shows that while turning piracy into profit is a nice idea, it's not lucrative for everyone. A loss of $2.04m in 2013 means that for every single dollar of settlement revenue sent back to companies like Warner Bros., Rightscorp lost close to $13. rightscorpFor the past six years or so the idea that piracy can be turned into profit has been gaining traction. After Internet users sharing copyrighted material without permission are identified, they can be contacted and pressured into settling what might otherwise be an expensive lawsuit. Discovering the real-life identities of pirates is not cheap, and that’s where US-based Rightscorp spotted a gap in the market. By attaching settlement demands to DMCA notices that ISPs are compelled to forward to alleged pirates, Rightscorp can reach alleged infringers without even knowing who they are. Once a warning letter enters the email inbox of an account holder, he or she is invited to visit the Rightscorp website to settle for around $20.00. Some people simply ignore the warnings and nothing else happens. Others choose to pay $20 for say, a single music track, but sometimes discover that Rightscorp has more demands for the rest of the tracks in the album lined up at $20 a pop. But while collecting $20 for sending an email might sound like a winner, financial results for 2013 just published by Rightscorp paint a pretty miserable picture. For the year ending December 31, 2013, Rightscorp reports total revenue of just $324,016. So, presuming all of that revenue came from $20.00 settlements, around 16,200 infringement notices were paid during the 12 month period, or around 311 per week. While this might seem like a decent return for just sending emails, they don’t just appear out of thin air. Rightscorp has costs, lots of them in fact. When an Internet user settles with Rightscorp some of this money goes back to companies such as Warner Bros., who give permission for the anti-piracy company to exploit their content to generate revenue. According to Rightscorp, during 2013 it paid a total of $161,868 to these companies. When we compare that amount with total revenue of $324,016, we can see that Rightscorp gives away $10 from every $20 settlement. On paper it’s money for nothing for the copyright holders, but Rightscorp’s $10 cut just isn’t balancing the books due to the large costs of running the business. Under ‘General and administrative expenses’ the company says it burnt through $1,663,921 in 2013, with ‘sales and marketing’ and ‘depreciation and amortization’ coming in at $275,616 and $33,438 respectively. Add those all together and Rightscorp cost $2,134,843 to run in 2013, yet it brought in just $324,016, a shortfall of more than $1.8 million. After other adjustments the bottom line shows a loss of $2,042,779 for the anti-piracy company, an amount that would take their share of another 204,278 settlements to balance, providing no other costs increased. While the company has expansion plans for Canada and has filed for patents to extend its monitoring services to Europe, China, Israel, Japan, Brazil, and India, the elusive aim of turning piracy into profit is still some way off. source:torrentfreak

  15. Josh Duhamel, known for playing the good guy, had a blast filming "Lost in the Sun," getting to switch things up as an "S.O.B." "I can safely say probably the best time I've had shooting a movie, because I get to play such a son of a bitch," Duhamel told MTV News' Josh Horowitz during our exclusive visit to the set, all the way down in (metaphorically) hot Texas. Duhamel plays a small-time crook who kidnaps an orphaned teenager (Josh Wiggins) — it's no more Mr. Nice Guy for the actor. On The Set Of 'Lost In The Sun' Starring Josh Duhamel "It comes very natural, which I'm not sure is a good thing or a bad thing," Duhamel said. With his rugged, intimidating appearance, it seems he must have kicked a few asses for the role — however, in reality, Duhamel explains, "I get my ass kicked once or twice in this movie." Duhamel shares most of his screen time with another Josh, Josh Wiggins, the young actor who plays the boy he kidnaps. "He's looking for a connection," Wiggins explained, "which John is absolutely not. He's looking for a sense of normalcy." It's only Wiggins' second big-screen role, but he more than held his own with the veteran actor. Duhamel was already granting Wiggins diva status, joking, "He's like, 'I got a big movie coming out at South by Southwest. I won't even remember this tomorrow.'" Despite all the joking, the two clearly had some great chemistry, and said they will miss each other and the blistering Texas sun. "I am sad that it's ending," Wiggins said. "It's bitter that it's ending, but it has been a lot of fun." You can see the two Joshes in "Lost in the Sun" when it's released later this year. source:mtv
  16. Jay Z's not the only rapper following new rules. Mekka Don, an up-and-coming MC from Columbus, Ohio, instituted a new rule of his own when he used the crowdfunding site IndieGoGo to help bankroll his debut album, The Dream Goes On. "As an independent artist, it's difficult to compete in the market without funding," the mtvU Freshman alum told MTV News. "We had no investors and no major label backing, so we decided to crowdfund. We wanted to compete. It's something I had been looking into for awhile and eventually said, 'F--k it, what do we have to lose?'" Mekka Don - "Dirty" The rapper born Chukwuemeka Onyejekwe raised an impressive $21,000 in 30 days from 300 supporters, well over his initial goal of $12,500. Fans that helped fund TDGO were offered a number of perks, including autographed pictures, CDs and merchandise like pieces from the Don's own clothing line, Pilot Boys. "We've been able to do a lot of our own promo, a lot of our own P.R., our own marketing, so it's a blessing," Don said during an interview on Shade 45's "Sway in the Morning." "It's really a testament to the fans." The Dream Goes On is out now on iTunes and Amazon. With standout songs like the percussion-driven "Adrian Peterson" and the inspirational "Your Day Will Come," the 10-track project centers on the NYU School of Law grad's desire to leave his high-paying job as an attorney to chase his hip-hop dreams. "I've built a fanbase off of my mixtapes, EPs and videos, but this is my first album," said Don, who was previously a corporate litigation attorney at Weil, Gotshal & Manges in New York City. "It tells my story: what it took to get here and what I've gone through in the process. I think it represents the story of anyone who is chasing a dream." Dream-chasers like Mekka Don are unusual in that he's found innovative ways to advance his career and make money. The former Ohio State University wide receiver explored revenue streams outside of those typically employed by indie artists making their way through the rap ranks, including licensing his music to ESPN and, of course, his alma matter. "Music licensing is something we looked into fairly early in my career as an alternative way to get exposure but also generate revenue," Don explained. "We were able to connect with ESPN and license music to them for college football in 2008 and we built on that and leveraged that into multiple other licensing situations. "Then Ohio State University got word of this and asked me to create music for them as well. So now we have an official licensing agreement with OSU and my songs "Juice," "Let's Go (O-H-I-O)" and "Go Nuts" are official university anthems that play at the football games and basketball games," he continued. "We believe this deal is the first of its kind with a major university and a rapper. Licensing is a great way to create revenue and exposure; it's a big part of our business model." Mekka Don's decision to forgo the courtroom for the studio is finally paying off, even though many still wonder why he made the leap. "Passion over pension," he said. "Passion over pension." source:mtv
  17. Ever since Kristen Stewart scored a haute new gig as the face of Chanel's Spring 2014 Paris/Dallas collection, fans and fashionistas alike have been waiting anxiously for a peek at the campaign. And thanks to a teensy, unscheduled sneak preview from someone at Chanel, we've finally gotten our first look! The photos, which briefly appeared on this Instagram account yesterday, have since been removed — but they were up for long enough to be grabbed by several enterprising newshounds, and for everyone to feast their eyes on K-Stew in the couture frontier fashions of the collection. The eclectic campaign features cowboy boots, cropped jackets and cool textures, including a pair of giant fur sleeves that look like they were made from a yeti, with its leading lady sporting a cornrow-accented updo and a heavily-eyelined 100-yard stare. But is this just for fashion's sake? Or could Kristen be savvily, secretly playing dress-up in preparation to make a new film? Because in looks like these, she could totally be making... A contemporary Western mafia flick In that knotted tee and cow-hide boots, with a toothpick dangling casually from her mouth, K-Stew would be right at home as the villainous young minion of a Las Vegas-based crime family. Picture a lady Luca Brasi, lurking around a casino looking for things to enforce. A Pirates of the Caribbean reboot in a frontier setting If Captain Jack Sparrow had a little sister, and said sister traded in her high seas destiny to become a cowboy, baby, she might look an awful lot like Kristen in that bolo tie and pair of fur batwings. An occult thriller about the Donner Party In a long, dark dress decorated with embroidered stars, and a fringed shawl draped over her shoulders, Kristen looks ready to lead a group of hapless pioneers westward toward their destiny... or like she's about to retreat to her covered wagon for a sumptuous bowl of Human Stew. source:mtv
  18. In a blog post on the Xbox Wire today, Microsoft program manager Michael Dunn announced that notifications for the Xbox One Reputation system--originally outlined last summer--will begin to show up this month. Players can fall into three categories of reputation score: "Green = Good Player," "Yellow = Needs Work," and "Red = Avoid Me." When you look at someone's Gamercard, you'll be able to see their reputation at a quick glance. The longer you play online without being reported as "abusive" by other players, the better your reputation score will be. This is decided by a Microsoft algorithm that monitors disruptive behavior. Dunn said the "vast majority" of players never receive any feedback from other players and will maintain their "Good Player" status without issue. Over time, Microsoft will introduce rewards for good behavior on Xbox Live, but there was nothing to share on this front today. For "Needs Work" players, you'll begin to receive reputation warnings this month. The purpose of these warnings, Dunn said, is to remind players about the effect their behavior has on the community and to encourage them to have "more positive interactions." Finally, Microsoft is also now beginning to roll out penalties for "Avoid Me" players. If you do not heed warnings and continue to have a "negative impact" on other players and the Xbox Live platform itself, you're going to get in trouble. "Avoid Me" players will have "reduced matchmaking pairings" and can even have their access to Twitch broadcasting revoked. "Remember, we designed the algorithm so it won’t penalize you for bad reports over a few weeks of play," Dunn said. "The system also adjusts for false reports from people that might intentionally report someone of greater skill or for other griefing purposes." Microsoft's overarching ambition for its Xbox One reputation system is to "create the best gaming community online" and match players with other gamers that you'll enjoy. source:gamespot
  19. Tera developer En Masse Entertainment today announced that its free-to-play PC shooter Mercenary Ops 2 will be released in North America this summer as Zombies Monsters Robots (ZMR). The game launched in China in 2012 and has attracted 30 million players so far. In development at Yingpei Games (formerly known as Epic Games China), ZMR is a third-person shooter set in an alternate world in which Earth finds itself under attack. Players will use "guns, guts, and gear" to fight their enemies in the multiplayer games. "We are excited because ZMR brings a fresh and thrilling experience to PC shooters. Playing the huge variety of co-op missions, facing crazy monsters and boss battles, and the intense PvP is going to keep gamers coming back for more,” En Masse Entertainment CEO Chris Lee said in a statement. ZMR features a variety of game modes, including a co-op campaign and wave-based survival missions, as well as a head-to-head competitive mode. The game's co-op mode supports up to eight players, while the competitive mode lets up to sixteen players duke it out. New content will be released for the game on a monthly basis, the company said. An alpha test for the game will be available in April before ZMR's full launch "early" this summer. source:gamespot
  20. One of the first games to publicly announce support for Sony's freshly unveiled virtual reality headset Project Morpheus is Slightly Mad Studios' racer Project Cars. The studio announced today that it will be supporting the device, adding that players will be "blown away" once they get hold of Sony's new kit. Project Cars will also support head tracking via the PlayStation Camera, Slightly Mad Studios says. "We’re proud to announce today that Project Cars will be supporting Project Morpheus," said the studio, "giving players a totally fresh and exhilarating new perspective on what it feels like to sit in the cockpit of a high-performance machine screaming around a beautiful location." "Virtual reality is a perfect fit for racing games since the game world literally comes rushing towards you from the distance and the increased sense of depth and speed that stereoscopic vision affords you makes this incredibly real and tangible. So when you’re racing you get a much better perception of distances and position and you feel far more enveloped by that world rather than just looking through a window at it." "Project Morpheus also allows you to see detail you might have otherwise missed… Via our interior cameras not only can you look around the cockpit and see everything from a first-person perspective, but using head-tracking via the PlayStation Camera you can also now move around the cockpit too--peer closer at some intricate detail or turn around and look out of the back window." Sony unveiled Project Morpheus last week at GDC 2014, where Sony executive Shuhei Yoshida said that the company had experimented with delayed racer Driveclub but that the results had made him feel motion sickness. Project Cars will be released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Wii U in November 2014. source:gamespot

  22. New data revealed by the MPAA shows that frequent moviegoers own more smartphones and other technological devices. The MPAA notes that the movie industry should therefore explore fresh options to use these devices to drive new visitors to theaters. At the same time, however, the movie group is warning theater owners over the piracy-enabling capabilities of smartphones. The MPAA just released their latest box-office statistics. Despite the continuing threat of online piracy the numbers once again show an increase in revenue worldwide, up to a record-breaking $35.9 billion in 2013. In addition to the revenue increase, the movie group emphasizes the importance of new technology in expanding its audience. The MPAA stresses that frequent moviegoers are also technology fanatics, with nearly three-quarters owning at least four new devices. Smartphones are particularly popular among movie fans, and the MPAA notes that the movie industry can do more to use this technology to boost theater attendance even further. “We need to keep exploring fresh ways of leveraging our new technology to drive traffic to your theaters,” MPAA CEO Chris Dodd said at The Colosseum inside Caesar’s Palace where the findings were presented. “We can embrace technology, and use it to complement our offerings….A smartphone can make more content available, but it will never be able to surpass the shared experience that you deliver to every person who sits in your theaters,” he added. Moviegoers own more tech devices (source: mpaa.org) technology-mpaa With the release of these statistics the MPAA wants to show that technology is not just a threat to the movie industry, but also an opportunity. While this is certainly true, the statements are not without conflict. Using smartphones to drive more people to the movies also presents a problem, as the MPAA doesn’t want them to be used inside the theater. The MPAA has previously published a set of anti-piracy practices movie theater owners should adhere to. This includes a very skeptical stance against any device that can be used to capture video, including smartphones. “The MPAA recommends that theaters adopt a Zero Tolerance policy that prohibits the video or audio recording and the taking of photographs of any portion of a movie,” MPAA states. “Theater managers should immediately alert law enforcement authorities whenever they suspect prohibited activity is taking place. Do not assume that a cell phone or digital camera is being used to take still photographs and not a full-length video recording,” the group adds. mobile-mpaa Past anecdotes show that theaters take these recommendations very seriously. A few years ago a girl was arrested for recording a 20 second clip from the movie Transformers on her phone, and more recently a Google Glass wearer was handed over to the authorities, without recording anything. The above is a classical example of the dual role technology plays for the entertainment industries. Nearly every new invention poses both threats and opportunities, and the challenge is to find the right balance between them. http://torrentfreak.com/mpaa-moviegoers-use-piracy-enabling-smartphones-140326/
  23. Spider-Man's super-powers are fairly self-explanatory. He can sense when danger is coming. He can scale walls. He can swing around from rooftop to rooftop thanks to those homemade web-shooters. But there's more to the story than all that. "He obviously has great strength," director Marc Webb told us in part two of "MTV's Secrets Revealed: The Amazing Spider-Man 2," our series of in-depth interviews with the superhero sequel's cast and crew. "But what's really great about Spider-Man are a few things that make him different from other superheroes." What are those different things, you ask? Watch and read on: 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2:' Peter Parker's Powers Revealed The Empathetic Spider-Man One of Parker's most important gifts is his ability to empathize with his enemies. Trailers and clips for "Amazing Spider-Man 2" have featured the masked hero trying to talk down Electro before resorting to violence. To hear Webb tell it, compassion is one of Spider-Man's greatest traits. "There's an emotional component to the superhero," said Webb. "It's not even super-heroism. It's something we all can have, something we all have the capacity to have." The Rescuing Spider-Man Last summer's "Man of Steel" came under fire for the way the film depicted Metropolis' violent destruction, without allowing Superman to actually stop down and save the city's imperiled civilians. That's not a criticism that can be leveled at "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," according to Webb. "Superman and Thor have great strength and they use that to great affect," he said. "But Spider-Man saves people." See All Of MTV's Exclusive 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' Reveals The Helpful Spider-Man Peter Parker doesn't just save lives. He's helpful in other, every day, lower-stakes ways. "If he has the time during a car chase, he'll help an old lady across the street," said Andrew Garfield, the man underneath the Spider-Man mask. "He'll tell someone to stop texting and driving, if he has a moment. He'll give a donut to a homeless guy." The Wise-Cracking Spider-Man Of course, there's an edgier side to Spider-Man, too. Humor is a big part of why people have connected with Spider-Man for decades upon decades. "He's not just saving people. He messes with the villains," said Garfield. "He's enjoying himself." Even Emma Stone, the actress who plays Parker's girlfriend Gwen Stacy, loves Parker's sense of humor. "They really pump it up in this movie, too," she said. The Inspirational Spider-Man Beyond his quick quips, there's something more basic about Spider-Man that empowers the character's fans. There's an inherent relatability to the idea of a flawed youth channeling his inner conflict by going out and saving the day with a bright, beaming attitude. "He's a teenage boy and he's so flawed," said Stone. "He's been through so much in his life that he kind of instantly becomes the most relatable superhero I can think of. So many people, men and women, have been inspired by him, because they can understand his pain and his wit." The Conflicted Spider-Man Even the most powerful superhero has weaknesses. Superman has Kryptonite. Iron Man has his ego. And Spider-Man has his scatterbrained, tormented personal life at constant odds with his superhero identity. "There are unresolved issues with Gwen, with his dad, with how to be Spider-Man and how to be Peter," said Garfield. "Can you be both? And being left with a single mother, really, in Aunt May. He's under a lot of pressure. And he always will be — otherwise we wouldn't tune in anymore." "MTV's Secrets Revealed: The Amazing Spider-Man 2" will continue in the coming weeks featuring interviews with more of the stars, exclusive art, behind the scenes footage and massive reveals about the upcoming movie — and beyond. Keep tuned to MTV News, as we'll be launching the following episodes soon: Episode 3: Electro Episode 4: The Sinister Six Episode 5: Peter And Gwen: The Promise source:mtv
  24. A week after her suicide, fashion designer L'Wren Scott was laid to rest at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery on Tuesday in a small, private affair attended by only close friends and family, including longtime love Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger. Scott, 49, who was found in her New York apartment
on March 17, was eulogized by Jagger, 70, during the hour-long ceremony, according to the Los Angeles Times. The stylist's brother, Randy Bambrough, also spoke, as did Jagger's daughter, Karis, and Scott's friend actress Ellen Barkin, who both read poems. Another one of Jagger's daughters, Jade, read a psalm, as did his grandchildren, Mazie and Zak. Longtime Rolling Stones backing vocalist Bernard Fowler performed the gospel standard "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" with accompaniment on guitar by former Eurythmics member Dave Stewart. The Stones postponed a series of shows in Australia and New Zealand in the wake of Scott's death, which Jagger said in a statement he was "still struggling to understand."
