  1. Some of our old-school Linux users are aware of the fact that the Debian GNU/Linux operating system and several of its derivatives are shipping by default with a web browser called Iceweasel. Iceweasel is a fork of the well-known Mozilla Firefox web browser, and the story of Debian using Iceweasel started a long time ago, around February 2006, when the Debian developers were forced to rebrand Mozilla Firefox to Iceweasel because of some trademark issues with the Firefox logos. We've already reported news last month on the matter of Debian developers being able to switch the Iceweasel name back to Firefox for their internal web browser used on all the supported Debian GNU/Linux operating system, and now it was officially announced that the Firefox packages are making a comeback into the main repos. "This took longer than it should have, but a page is now officially turned. I uploaded Firefox and Firefox ESR to Debian unstable. They will have to go through the Debian NEW queue because they are new source packages, so won’t be immediately available, but they should arrive soon enough," Mike Hommey, Iceweasel maintainer, has explained. What about Mozilla Thunderbird? The replacement of Iceweasel in Debian GNU/Linux with the real Firefox web browser is a major change, so those using the fork as their main web browser in Debian Unstable should be aware of the fact the Iceweasel packages will be upgraded to the current Firefox ESR (Extended Support Release) version. In the same manner, those using Iceweasel in Debian Stable will also receive the current Firefox ESR build, but only after Iceweasel/Firefox ESR 38 reaches end of life, which should happen in about three months from today. One questions remains though: what about Mozilla Thunderbird and Icedove?
  2. X.Org Server, the open-source display server technology used by default in almost all Linux kernel-based operating systems received its second maintenance build for the 1.18 series. According to the announcement published earlier on the main X.Org Announce mailing list by Adam Jackson, X.Org Server 1.18.2 is here to add a big pile of updates to the stable branch of the software, as well as to fix many of the issues that have been reported since the first point release announced last month, on February 8, 2016. Release highlights X.Org Server 1.18.2 include several under-the-hood improvements to glamor, which can now use the OpenGL core profiles if they're available in the respective operating system, thus greatly improving the overall performance and memory usage on modern hardware. Glamor also received multiple performance improvements for the Raspberry Pi single-board computer, as well as for several other GLES (OpenGL ES) platforms. Moreover, the second point release of X.Org Server 1.18 adds correctness fixes for crashes, hangs, and other annoyances to the DRI2, DRI3, and Present components. Xwayland and Xwin received multiple updates Besides the glamor and Direct Rendering Infrastructure enhancements mentioned above, X.Org Server 1.18.2 also updates the Xwayland server to support the xf86vidmode and Xv extensions. Also, multiple issues reported by users with output hotplug got fixed, and there are a few pointer updates as well. Last but not least, the second maintenance release of the stable X.Org Server 1.18 display server adds some great clipboard and window management improvements, as well as a few new keyboard layouts to the Xwin X server for the Cygwin environment running on Microsoft Windows platforms. Download X.Org Server 1.18.2 right now from Softpedia.
  3. 343 Industries has already announced that it plans to offer the new major free content drop for Halo 5: Guardians in early April, and the team is ready to start slowly revealing the kind of new content that gamers will be able to play with. The studio wants to introduce more weapons, skins, armors, helmets, assassinations and emblems, but the core of the DLC is a new and engaging Warzone map called Skirmish at Darkstar, which allows Spartans to try and take back the destroyed world while moving among its abandoned buildings. At the moment 343 Industries is only offering access to concept images, with Josh Kao, the senior concept artist, adds, "For Skirmish at Darkstar, the team decided on having a derelict ship in the middle of the map on the mining planet of Meridian - which you can see to the left of the concept. I originally thought about having a space elevator in the concept, but we decided against it because there was already one in the campaign." Ghosts of Meridian will also feature the first appearance of the Hannibal Mantis, with more details about its capabilities set to be offered closer to the moment in April when the DLC will be launched. The next reveal about the content will be centered on the kinds of new REQ cards that players will be able to use. The Halo 5: Guardians Warzone mode will get improvements soon 343 Industries says that it is aware of the wide variety of reports on kill farming and that it is exploring a variety of possible adjustments to game systems and rewards that should alleviate the problem. Community-made maps for both Big Team Battle and Grifball are at the moment in testing at an internal team, and the studio plans to introduce them into future matchmaking updates. 343 Industries has also made playlists tweaks to the older Halo: The Master Chief Collection, consolidating game modes and expanding matchmaking criteria to make it easier for players to get into games. According to the developers, they will continue to offer a free update every month for Halo 5: Guardians and they will add the much-requested Warzone Firefight game mode, which focuses on Player versus Environment action, during the summer of this year. Microsoft is also using books and toys launched in 2016 to expand the universe of the Master Chief powered series, and a new video game announcement will probably take place at some point next year.
  4. Bungie continues to test the patience of its long-term fans by failing to reveal any new information about the major new content drop for Destiny that they are planning to deliver before the end of spring, choosing instead to show gamers how the core teams working on the social shooter work to deliver quality. Recently gamers got to see more details about the audio team, and the voice acting and the studio also announces a new partnership with Twitch that will allow it to improve the real world via the Bungie Foundation. On Monday, March 14 the team is launching a new Bungie Bounty event that will focus on Clan Resolute in the Rift mode, with the action taking place between 11 AM And 1 PM Pacific Standard Time on the PlayStation 4 from Sony. The official announcement adds, "Senior Designer Steve Dolan will join us from the Live Team to swap notes on Clan culture with one of the more notorious teams in the Destiny community. Cozmo will be our designated trigger-man from the Community Team. And me? I’ll be in the rear with the gear, mixing it up in chat." Bungie is also offering details on how daylight saving time will affect the start date for the various resets and events linked to Destiny. Matchmaking has been improved for all modes The most recent hotfix for Destiny was designed to improve matchmaking for all playlists, prioritizing connection quality over player skill when looking for opponents, and Bungie has also introduced the Damage Referee to make sure that the gameplay is improved for most gamers. It's unclear when the developers will use the new Twitch streams to talk about the new content that they are planning to launch or to offer information about the kinds of missions and events that they plan to introduce. The player community is getting a little restless, especially after the relatively small impact of the Crimson Days community event centered around Valentine's Day. Bungie has promised that the update will include a focus on player versus environment action and will enhance the options that Guardians have in combat. According to publisher Activision, there are plans to deliver another paid expansion for Destiny before the end of the year, and both companies are working on a sequel for the social shooter that they are set to offer in the first few months of 2017. https://youtu.be/D5-P9emLQrI
  5. Blizzard is confirming that the new expansion for Hearthstone is called Whispers of the Old Gods and is set to arrive in either late April or early May, introducing no less than 134 new cards to the game and offering gamers new ways to tweak their deck for improved performance. The official announcement explains that "the Old Gods’ voices are dread whispers that no mere mortal can hope to resist. It is said that for millennia uncounted the massive Old Gods lay dreaming in ageless sleep deep beneath the surface of Azeroth." Four special Old Gods cards will be introduced in the expansion, C’Thun, Yogg-Saron, Y’Shaarj, and N’Zoth, all of them designed to introduce entirely new ways for the gamer to take out his opponents. Blizzard is also offering a Legendary C’Thun card and two Beckoner of Evil cards to all players who open their first Whispers of the Old Gods pack for Hearthstone. There are some details about the cards that will be offered in the official site reveal, but a full list of the 134 new cards has not yet been provided, although it seems the focus will be on modifications and tweaks associated with the already existing mechanics and powers. On March 14, gamers will be able to get access to a 50 pack bundle of Whispers of the Old Gods card packs for 49.99 dollars or Euro, with a new card back offered as a bonus. After launch, new packs will be offered for the same price as those for previous expansions. Whispers of the Old Gods comes to Arena on launch day All the cards associated with the expansion will be active in all modes when launch takes place. Blizzard also says it will use the delivery of Whispers of the Old Gods to significantly revamp the multiplayer side of Hearthstone by adding Standard and Wild Play formats. The first of them is designed to keep competitive action interesting and balanced by allowing gamers to use the core set of cards as well as Blackrock Mountain, The Grand Tournament, The League of Explorers and Whispers of the Old Gods. According to Blizzard it plans to deliver more balancing tweaks to the cards that will be featured in Standard. Meanwhile Wild Play is designed to allow gamers to show off their collection of cards and will introduce crafting for players who are interested in getting access to everything Hearthstone has to offer. https://youtu.be/cKjUgLrDEbI

  13. This is just a very short note from me, the owner. This site has become so much more than I ever anticipated, due only to the unfailing and selfless help from our wonderful staff, people that most of you never even see or hear from, yet they work and give sooo much and all for free, so that you can have a site like RNS to come and get your books. Remember next time you buy yourself a beer or a coffee, that the book you are going to read now was free ... and maybe go without that ONE beer or coffee and help us survive next year. I hope everyone has a really awesome year though, we certainly will here in sunny South Africa although we probably have the dumbestass President ever in world history, but lol beggars can't be choosers eh. Maybe a bus hits the egghead soon .... May all your endeavors succeed beyond your wildest dreams ... HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!!
  14. Our recent downtime and current situation Dear TVC members, Those of you who have not been following our Facebook page will be wondering what the hell has been going on so we thought that it was time to fill you in..... On Boxing Day we were once again hit by massive and sustained DDoS attacks and our server hosts immediately took us offline in order to limit the damage. Obviously the pathetic individual responsible for these attacks has no respect for the season of goodwill and has nothing better to do than cause misery for others. Since then we have been very busy moving things around and installing better defences against this sort of attack. As you can see the site is now up, however the tracker is not yet functional, meaning that downloading and seeding is not possible. We hope that the work will be finished within the next 48 hours, hopefully sooner, and things will then return to normal. We would like to take the opportunity to thank you all for your patience and also for the many, many messages that we have received. The response to the Facebook postings was quite simply overwhelming and we are very touched by your support. TVC is a real community and it is fantastic to know how many of you feel the same way about it as we do. Many sites would have (and have) folded under such pressure, but we refuse to give in and will continue to fight for your site! A huge thank you also to those of you who have made donations today. With the site only semi-functional this is an amazing show of loyalty and support and is very very much appreciated. We will be applying the upgrades to your accounts once the tracker is back online and all current VIPs will have extra days added to their accounts to make up for the time lost. With any new changes there are inevitably teething issues, especially as we can't test some things until the site is live. We will be aware of any glitches as soon as they arise , so could I just ask you to avoid sending non urgent staff messages whilst things settle down? A thread will be created in the Help section so that you can report any glitches there, leaving the message section free for other problems. Happy New Year everyone!
  15. site issues in consequence of our recent downtime update news So the site is back and hobbling along for now. We are aware of three issues that have sprung up that are a consequence of how we got the site back up. These are: 1) uploads are now working. Get to work, uploaders! 2) The invite page doesn't display sent invites, which means you can't cancel a sent invite. Invites are going out as normal, it's just the invite page that is not displaying properly. 3) The announce bot in IRC is working again. 2 of 3 fixed. Things are moving! Happy New Year, all.

  20. The people responsible for posting more than a dozen leaked DVD-screeners over the past several days have stopped their dump. Various sources cite a security breach as the reason for the sudden change, which likely means that many of the 40 promised leaks might never reach the public at large. Over the past several days more than a dozen high quality screeners of Hollywood films have appeared online, including The Hateful Eight, The Revenant and Steve Jobs. Devastated Hollywood studios are now working with the FBI to catch the perpetrators, with some success. Last week they traced The Hateful Eight leak back to a Hollywood executive and the feds are currently looking into additional leads. The main targets in this case are individuals connected to the release group Hive-CM8. They’ve released the majority of the DVD screeners that are out at the moment and earlier promised to leak a total of 40. However, it now appears that their releasing spree has come to an end. Comments made by an insider on a private torrent site claim that a recent “expose” of a torrent uploader has something to do with it. This information was posted on various sites including KAT and in the TF comment section. The person responsible for the expose, who uses the screen name Sup3rman, contacted TorrentFreak to provide his side of the story. After reading an article about how easy it can sometimes be for law enforcement to catch movie pirates, he decided to test this theory on someone who uploaded many Hive-CM8 releases. To do this, he looked at the source of the movie screenshots and found that they were linked to an image sharing account with thousands of images. All this info was (and is) rather public as the screenshots were posted with the torrent uploads. Also, everyone could see where they were hosted and figure out that the account name in question matched that of the torrent uploader. However, not everyone close to the release group appreciated the “exposure” and as a result the public Hive-CM8 releases were halted. Hive-CM8 has not commented on the break but on a separate site he wrote that he won’t be available for some time. On first sight the ‘leaked’ information doesn’t appear to be anything new or particularly private. However, it certainly appears that something spooked the group or uploader into halting the releases. The reported break is confirmed by the lack of new releases over the past day or two, which is the longest gap since the first DVD screener was posted. Interestingly, however, The Big Short and Anomalisa have been published in private, or ‘internally’ as it’s known. At the end of the day many questions remain. Could it really be that the exposed image account is the sole reason for stopping the public releases? Or is something else going on behind the scenes? There’s no point in speculating any further at this point or drawing connections that may be totally irrelevant, but one has to wonder.
  21. Most of the UK's biggest retailers are currently running sales but those looking for Amazon's Fire TV Stick will go home disappointed. After massive sales this festive period the product is currently out of stock at all of the largest stores. While Netflix and Amazon Prime are partially to blame, piracy has been a big driver. Amazon’s Fire TV stick is a great little device. Plugging nicely into an available HDMI port on most TVs, the device ‘smartens up’ the dumbest of devices and makes available the growing world of IPTV services. The one currently plugged into my TV in the bedroom has mainly been used for the ‘free’ video streaming services bundled with Amazon Prime but the stick is equally at home streaming video from Netflix or any of the many services available from Amazon’s store. However, Amazon’s little device has a trick up its sleeve. Being Android based, Fire TV Stick can run a much wider array of apps and services than Amazon offers through its regular on-screen interface. Of particular interest is Kodi, which together with a vast array of plugins offers access to all the latest movies, TV shows and live sports most people could ever need. And news of just how special the Fire TV Stick/Kodi combo can be has been traveling fast in the past few weeks, particularly in the UK. The first signs that something might be going on came very early December when even for Prime customers Amazon started advising that delivery for Fire TV Sticks was not the usual ‘next day’, but was actually nearer two weeks. For someone looking to buy two units as gifts, that was unacceptable. Other stores weren’t much help either. After checking stock at nearly two dozen Argos and Currys retailers (both huge operations in the UK), just two units were found at the former 12 miles away. But the bizarre thing was that when I collected the items the lady behind the counter asked smilingly: “Are these for Kodi?” Of course, I know about Kodi. We all know about Kodi. But for it to be mentioned without any prompting at the point of sale in a retailer was quite a surprise to say the least. And for a worker at a non-specialist retailer to know so much about it hints at the scale of the issue. In case you missed it, Amazon banned Kodi from its store in the summer over piracy concerns but with the official APK plus adbFire and a loader like FireStarter, the software runs like a dream on Amazon Fire TV Stick. “Everybody is buying these for Kodi, you can get everything on it. But that’s it now, we’re out of stock,” I was told while handing over the cash. Interesting
.. Intrigued, in the weeks that followed I monitored stock at Argos, Currys/PC World, Amazon themselves and several other big retailers including John Lewis and the nation’s biggest supermarket, Tesco. After an initial delay Amazon appeared to do the best in having stock available but all the rest really struggled. Now, just days after Christmas, Currys/PC World have zero stock for home delivery and its the same situation at Tesco, John Lewis and Argos. Checking for local stock at the latter in the London, Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow regions reveals not a single unit available. Only Amazon themselves can offer anything (correct, 28 Dec). Granted, it’s more than likely that Fire TV Stick has proven popular with consumers due to it working with Netflix and iPlayer, but Chromecast does that too and anyone can buy one of those devices at any of the above retailers anywhere in the next hour. Admittedly, it’s a possibility that Amazon screwed up and didn’t make enough Fire TV Sticks. But if that’s the case, why is eBay awash with (ahem) ‘fully loaded’ Amazon Fire TV Sticks for immediate delivery? Also, Google Trends can sometimes offer an insight into what people are interested in during a given period. So, we locked into December, did searches for both Kodi and Fire TV, and restricted results to the UK. As can be seen from the image below, not only is Kodi even more popular than Amazon’s device, but the interest in both the software and the hardware follows similar waves. There can be little doubt that interest in both Kodi and Fire TV are now at a high, not only in the UK, but also elsewhere. It’s also a further sign that piracy has really migrated out of the bedroom and onto the living room TV, something that Hollywood and other interested parties really wanted to avoid.
  22. The Pirate Bay lost all of its active "Hydra" domain names this morning. ThePirateBay.LA, .GD, .MN and .VG were suspended by their registrar, alongside several other TPB related domains. The domain troubles make the site hard to reach through the usual channels, but The Pirate Bay still has some backups in reserve. Last May the Stockholm District Court ordered the Pirate Bay’s .SE domains to be handed over to the Swedish state, a decision which is currently being appealed. In a response The Pirate Bay decided to quickly redirect its visitors to a ‘Hydra’ of six new domain names in case the .SE domains were lost for good. The notorious torrent site decided to use more than one domain name, anticipating that not all would survive pressure from copyright holders. This was no unnecessary precaution as the first domain name was quickly suspended following an intervention from the associated registry, which soon chopped off the first head. Today, the Hydra lost its remaining heads after TPB’s domain registrar took over all remaining domain names. This morning ThePirateBay.la, ThePirateBay.gd, ThePirateBay.mn and ThePirateBay.vg were all listed as “clienthold” by the registry and the same is true for several other official TPB domains including those using the .FM, .SH, .MU and .TW extensions. This means they are no longer accessible, once all DNS entries are updates. All affected domain names are linked to the same service and registered to Pirate Bay co-founder Fredrik Neij. According to ICANN the clienthold status is uncommon and “usually enacted during legal disputes, non-payment, or when your domain is subject to deletion.” Pirate Bay’s .LA Whois As a result of the domain troubles The Pirate Bay is currently not reachable (cached DNS entries aside, but these will expire soon) through the usual ThePirateBay.se domain, which redirects to the domains listed above. However, the .org domain remains operational and the same is true for the .onion address. At this point there is no official statement on the reason for the seizures/suspensions. The responsible registrar appears to be Idotz.net, which is a U.S. based 1api/Hexonet reseller. TorrentFreak has asked Idotz for a comment but we were informed that they are unable to respond to third-party queries regarding domain names due to customer privacy reasons. Not all domain registrars and registries are equally responsive to copyright complaints. Some suspend a domain name after a single complaint, while others require a local court order before taking action. The Mongolian registry, which is behind TPB’s .MN domain name, previously informed TF that they will process potential complaints through ICANN’s Dispute Resolution Policy, suggesting that they will not take any voluntary action. Still, that didn’t prevent the registrar from putting the .MN domain name on hold today. Considering Pirate Bay’s defiant stance it’s likely that a copyright holder complaint triggered the current actions, but that hasn’t been confirmed. The TPB team has yet to make an official statement on the problems. We will update this article should more information become available. Update: The existing .se redirects were removed. TPB is operating exclusively from the .se domain for the time being.
