AG-AFTRA is investigating several companies that may have been scamming members by falsely representing themselves as real employers in the advertising industry. The union, which represents about 160,000 performers, posted a message Tuesday on its official web site: “In an effort to protect our members from abuse and harm in the advertising industry, SAG-AFTRA has launched an investigation into several companies we believe have falsely represented themselves as real employers.” SAG-AFTRA later sent a message to members saying that the missive was based on “clear information” from members and their reps. It did not cite specific instances. It also said, “the union is increasingly concerned that performers’ earnings, safety, and rights are at serious risk when hired by companies that are not, in fact, real employers. This includes: payment delayed or never received, uncontrolled product conflicts, theft or unauthorized use of performances, and other abuses tied to compensation.” SAG-AFTRA members generate more than $1 billion in annual earnings under the union’s contract with the ad industry. But large portions of the industry produce commercials that are non-union. SAG-AFTRA members who perform non-union work can be subject to union discipline. Apple is shuffling showrunners on its much-anticipated morning show drama starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon. Drama veteran Kerry Ehrin (“Bates Motel”) is expected to take the helm of the series, produced by the startup Media Res. Jay Carson had been on board as creator and showrunner but he has parted ways with the project over creative differences. Apple is in the midst of closing an overall deal with Ehrin. The untitled morning show drama marks Apple’s first major swing in the premium drama arena. The Directors Guild of America has announced that the 71st annual DGA Awards will take place on Feb. 2, 2019, at the Hollywood & Highland Center’s Ray Dolby Ballroom. Guillermo del Toro won the DGA Award for outstanding directorial achievement for “The Shape of Water” this year. He went on to nab the Academy Award for best director and best picture. The DGA Award is one of the top indicators of Oscar sentiment, with all but seven of the DGA winners since 1948 going on to take the best director Oscar. The last divergence came in 2013 when Ben Affleck won the DGA Award for “Argo,” even though he did not receive an Oscar nomination. The “Handmaid’s Tale,” “Veep,” and “Big Little Lies” won the major TV awards at the ceremony on Feb. 3 at the Beverly Hilton. The SAG Awards has set the date for next year’s ceremony: Jan. 27 at its usual location at the Shrine Auditorium in Downtown Los Angeles. The 91st Academy Awards will be held on Feb. 24, 2019. Ads placed for the comedy had an estimated media value of $6.55 million through Sunday, April 1, for 1,074 national ad airings on 38 networks. (Spend figures are based on estimates generated from March 26-April 1. Estimates may be updated after the chart is posted as new information becomes available.) NBC, ESPN and Adult Swim were among the networks on which Universal spent heavily, while NBA basketball, “The Walking Dead” and “The Big Bang Theory” were among the specific programming the studio prioritized. The HFPA and Dick Clark Productions are now fielding offers from other parties. The Golden Globes are officially up for grabs, with NBC's exclusive renegotiation window closing without a new deal. Dick Clark Productions provided THR with the following statement earlier Monday afternoon: "The Hollywood Foreign Press Association and Dick Clark Productions value our 25-year relationship with NBC and will continue to have discussions with them about extending our television deal. However, as the exclusive negotiation period with NBC has ended, we are evaluating offers from other interested parties." NBC has had one of the longest-running awards show contracts with the Globes, airing the ceremony since 1993. Losing the event would leave it without a major awards effort, though the network will remain on the likely continuing rotation for the Emmy Awards and recently acquired the Billboard Music Awards. For the the Globes' part, sources say that DCP and the HFPA are pursuing all three broadcast networks and some streamers for potentially acquiring the show. The latter option would be a huge blow to linear TV, which has at least maintained a stranglehold on event programming as so much other content heads to alternative platforms. Before Ta-Nehisi Coates takes over the writing chores of Marvel’s Captain America comic book, the company is building an all-star team to close out the current run. Marvel on Monday revealed the addition of four artists to next month’s issues. Alongside the already announced team of writer Mark Waid and artist Leonardo Romero, the company revealed that Captain America No. 701 will feature sequences drawn by J.G. Jones — Waid’s partner on the miniseries Strange Fruit — and Adam Hughes, while No. 702, to be released two weeks later, will feature sequences drawn by Howard Chaykin and Chris Sprouse. The new additions will illustrate sequences outside of the primary narrative by Waid and Romero, which takes place in 2134 and focuses on the grandson of Steve Rogers — who, as can be seen in Michael Cho’s cover for No. 702 (above), happens to bear a striking resemblance to Chris Evans’ Captain America from this month’s Avengers: Infinity War movie. “For the ‘Promised Land’ storyline, because it takes advantage of the entire history and legend of Captain America, we deliberately constructed the issues to allow us to take advantage of contributions from special guest artists,” Marvel senior vp and executive editor Tom Brevoort said in a statement. Nicolas Cage would like to see Ghost Rider return to the big screen in an R-rated movie, but with someone other than himself in the lead role. The Marvel comics character Ghost Rider, who has gone through many iterations over the years, first appeared in his now-familiar supernatural form in 1972. Cage played the Johnny Blaze version of the character – a stunt cyclist who gives up his soul to become a flaming-skulled vigilante – in 2007’s Ghost Rider. The first Ghost Rider movie finished as a modest hit for Sony Pictures, grossing $228 million worldwide on a reported $110 million production budget. Cage returned for the 2012 sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, which only grossed about half as much as the original. Despite the extreme nature of the Ghost Rider character, both films came in with PG-13 ratings, disappointing those eager for a more adult take on the anti-hero. Spirit of Vengeance co-director Brian Taylor recently addressed the Robbie Reyes/Ghost Rider character on the TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and he didn’t have anything nice to say about that version. Taylor referred to the TV Ghost Rider as a “clean, vanilla, G-rated” character and said he has no interest in that kind of take. Taylor also echoed Cage’s comments about the need for a scary, R-rated Ghost Rider movie. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like there’s much momentum behind the idea of an R-rated Ghost Rider movie out there. It’s true that studios overall are more amenable these days to the idea of R-rated superhero movies thanks to the success of Logan and Deadpool. But with Ghost Rider now part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe due to his inclusion on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., audiences shouldn’t hold their breath for Nicolas Cage and Brian Taylor’s dream to come true. Unless things change drastically on the superhero landscape, the two PG-13 Ghost Rider movies with Cage will likely be the closest anyone ever comes to realizing a scary incarnation of the character. And if Ghost Rider ever did by some miracle make it back to the big screen in R-rated form, it doesn’t sound like Nicolas Cage is very optimistic about his chance to land the role. Cage seems resigned to the reality that his days playing comic book superheroes in franchise films have come to an end – at least for the most part. In the meantime, Cage keeps churning out his direct-to-video movies, including his latest opus The Humanity Bureau. At least Cage will finally get to play Superman, albeit only in voice form, in Teen Titans Go! To the Movies.
